Catalogue cover for Twilight 2012

Twilight is an exhibition based on a wide region from the upper Derwent valley to the central highlands and down to the southern midlands of Tasmania.

Landscape artists often develop an affinity with specific areas and these districts comprise some of my favorites- parts of which resonate deeply to my own rural background, but etched with a uniquely Tasmanian perspective.

Looking at the good pastures now it’s hard to reconcile memories of the same country at the height of the recent drought. The impression of impending prosperity is however tinged with a sense of anxiety, as often is the case ‘on the land’- peeling paint, and old ponies in house paddocks, their riders long since outgrown them.

The country seems to get its share of both light and dark, not necessarily always in equal amounts- but one generally follows the other in a relentless pursuit.

Twilight is comprised of 16 paintings, almost all undertaken in the last 12 months. It is my exploration of a contemporary landscape, with a few twists and turns along the way.

COLLECT on the Fly

Tasmanian art is reaching for the sky with Hobart Airport and arts@work joining forces to help promote Tasmanian artists.
The Hobart Airport and arts@work recently launched the COLLECT on the Fly program that will see a changing exhibition program of Tasmanian art from galleries participating in the COLLECT Art Purchase Scheme.
The Hobart Airport has over 1.8 million travellers that pass through the terminal every year and the exhibition space provides an opportunity to present Tasmanian artwork outside of a traditional gallery environment.
The exhibition space is on either side of the check-in area and will be seen by thousands of travellers every week.
The first exhibition includes works by Tasmanian artists Stephanie Tabram and Paul Snell, who are represented by the Colville Gallery.
The exhibitions also offer an opportunity to promote the COLLECT scheme which has been offering interest-free loans to Australian residents for nearly four years and has assisted in the purchase of over 1 000 artworks by Tasmanian artists. Currently about 27 per cent of the artwork purchased through the COLLECT scheme is to interstate travellers providing an economic boost to the local arts industry.
The Hobart Airport’s decision to showcase Tasmania’s creative community in such a high profile way is welcomed.
The exhibitions will last approximately eight weeks each and will rotate between Colville Gallery, Bett Gallery, Gallery Salamanca and Despard Gallery.

John Glover (1767-1849) is considered the father of Australian landscape painting, and spent the last 19 years of his life in Tasmania. Deeth's book looks at the different ways landscape can be expressed and understood by examining not only Glover's work, but many of the artists who have entered the Glover Prize for landscape painting."

I've been selected as a finalist in the Eutick Memorial Still Life Award run by the Coffs Harbour Regional Gallery. The winner will be announced on 18 November 2011 and the exhibition runs from 19 November 2011 to 14 January 2012.

Ranelagh Twilight

The following is extracted from an article in today's Launceston Examiner:

Kingston Beach artist Stephanie Tabram has won the $3000 Greg Waddle People's Choice Award at this year's Glover Prize landscape art competition.
Votes from visitors to the nation's richest landscape painting prize exhibition over the past five days identified her large-scale painting titled Ranelagh Twilight as the winner.
Tabram has been painting for 25 years and trained at the College of Fine Arts in Sydney. She was elated to have won this, her first art prize.
``The people's choice to me is more of an emotional vote, so I've been able to meet my audience somewhere,'' she said.
On Friday night competition judges declared Hobart artist Matthew Armstrong's oil painting of an urban Hobart streetscape entitled Transformed At Night winner of the $30,000 Glover Art Prize for 2009.
Judges were Sydney Morning Herald art critic John McDonald, artist and 2007 Archibald Prize winner John Beard and National Gallery of Victoria senior contemporary art curator Alex Baker.
