Unicorn Craze

2018-09-24T12:31:00.001-07:00

We had a baby shower for one of my friends at church. The theme for the shower was unicorns. So, they wanted me to make one of the unicorn cakes that is so popular right now.

Here is my take on the unicorn cake in the colors of the shower.

The ears and horn are made from marshmallow fondant. The horn is fondant that was spiraled around a kebob stick.

The cake was a strawberry cake with buttercream icing.

Hope you like it.

80s Vibe

2018-09-18T08:08:00.002-07:00

Sorry about being non-existent for a while.

Hope you enjoy this cake. It was for my son's 8th birthday. He was into all the old games after watching Pixels. So, I made him a Old School game cake.

For this cake a made two square chocolate cakes with chocolate frosting.

I then covered it in Marshmallow Fondant.

Each side of the cake featured a different game.

There was Pac-Man.

There was Asteroids.

And there was Centapede.

The front of the cake had Happy Birthday in Pac-Man font.

Each character on the top of the cake is made completely out of Fondant.

Hope you enjoyed a little bit of nostalgia.

One for the Books

2017-12-15T14:00:00.000-08:00

I have done several cakes based on books that the birthday boy/girl have liked.

One of those cakes was based off the Warriors series on cat clans. It was for my niece. I can't remember the flavor of this particular cake, but it was covered in marshmallow fondant and colored with food gel to recreate the book cover. My niece loved it, so that's what matters.

Another one that I did was for my son who was all into the Percy Jackson book series at the time.

This is a round blue velvet cake decorated with crusting buttercream to represent the three head Gods, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon.

Hope you liked them. Come back for more later.

This force is strong with this one

2017-12-11T08:57:00.000-08:00

For a sister/brother birthday party, the mother wanted cakes that were Star Wars themed.

She got her inspiration on pinterest.

I made a girly Darth Vader cake that was pink buttercream with a black and white Vader. I printed out a Vader and used it to make an outline on my cake. I then filled it in and smoothed it out with the Viva smoothing method. The inside was a homemade sprinkle cake.

I made a Boba Fett cake using blue buttercream. I then used an image from online and my pattern. I filled in my pattern with green, red, and black icing. The inside was a homemade buttermilk sprinkle cake.

Don't Let the Muggle get you Down

2017-11-28T09:30:00.000-08:00

For my daughter's birthday, I planned a Harry Potter birthday complete with wands and Bert's Ever Flavored bean.

The girls had fun, and the cake was a hit.

The cake was chocolate with chocolate buttercream. I shaped it like a spell book and covered it in fondant.

I made a rice krispy owl and covered it in fondant. The birthday girl helped me on the face.

Superhero Sweets

2017-11-16T09:20:00.000-08:00

I have done several superhero cakes in the last year.

The first one is a Superman baby onesie for sweet baby Finn. It was white cake with my crusting buttercream. To get the emblem just right, I printed out a copy and traced it onto the cake.

The second one was for sweet Sophia's birthday. It was a Spiderman cake made from white cake and my crusting buttercream. I traced an image of Spidey on the cake and filled it in.

I put a certificate in the silent auction at the scout Blue and Gold banquet, and the recipient wanted a Punisher/Deadpool cake. This was a white cake with my crusting buttercream. I traced the image on the cake and filled it in like the other two cakes.

For another Blue and Gold silent auction winner, I made a Flash cake. This one was chocolate with my crusting buttercream icing.

Hope you enjoyed all the Superhero Sweets from today.

Slither'n Snake

2017-11-15T12:49:00.000-08:00

I know, I know. It's been way too long. Thought I would post a cake from last year. I definitely need to play catch up.

For my Dad's birthday a couple of years ago I decided to make a copperhead. The reason I did this is because we went camping that summer, and I almost stepped on a copperhead. My Dad ended up killing it.

I made the cake using 2 round yellow cakes. I iced the cake and then covered it in fondant. I airbrushed the cake a light orange color and used thinned food color gel to color on the stripes.

The head is made from Rice Krispy treats.

Hope you enjoy my skin crawling snake.

May the Force Be With You

2016-01-18T13:38:00.000-08:00

I have made two Star Wars cakes so far.

This first one was made last year for my niece. It depicts Ezra from Star Wars Rebels.

I made a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream. I then covered it in a white mixture of half marshmallow fondant/half molding chocolate. I airbrushed it to have an ombre effect from yellow to orange. I cut out a panel of black fondant and cut out the birthday girls name from the half and half mixture. I airbrushed her name for an ombre effect as well. I cut out a black circle for the top of the cake and did a fondant transfer on top. Once, I had it pieced together, I outlined it in black buttercream icing. His hand has a 3D effect, and I placed a straw with a glow stick in it to look like a light sabre.

This year I did a Yoda cake. This cake was a white cake covered in orange buttercream. I then placed a cut out picture on my cake and traced it. I then looked at my picture and drew on the main lines with a toothpick. I filled in the sections with colored buttercream and smoothed it out. I then used black buttercream to draw on the details.

Here is the inspiration image.

Here is the filled in areas before detail was added.

Here is the finished cake with details.

Owl Have Another

2015-09-29T14:22:00.000-07:00

Someone in our neighborhood had a baby girl that was turning 1. She needed a cake for a photo shoot, and a cake with cupcakes for a party.

I really love how the owl photo shoot cake turned out. It was one of the easier cakes I have done.

I used a domed metal bowl to cook my cake in. Then, I did a thin layer of buttercream all over the cake. I did the buttercream petal technique all over the cake starting at the bottom and working my way to the top with purple and pink icing to mimmick feathers. I then added the eyes, beak and ears using colored marshmallow fondant.

The cake and cupcakes for the party were in a totally different color scheme. I took the owls from the cupcake set and added them to the side of the cake. They bought a clay owl to put on top of the cake that matched the colors perfectly.

It was just a plan buttercream cake with piped owls on the sides. Nothing to fancy about that, but it was cute.

And They Lived Happily 'Ever After'

2015-09-22T16:38:00.000-07:00

For my daughter's last birthday, she wanted an Ever After High Cake. So, I got right on that. I love that I can make a cake with characters that she loves without breaking the bank. I know if I tried to get someone else to make a similar cake, it would have cost me an arm and a leg.

My inspiration came from this cake by Cake-a-Mania. You can see this cake and others at www.cake-a-mania.com.

I don't have an edible paper printer so I improvised on my framed image. My daughter still loved it.

the cake was a chocolate cake with chocolate ganache on it. This was my first time using ganache so I was pretty impressed with how my edges turned out. On the bottom layer, I used a plastic bag dabbed in food color. For the gold details, I took gold dust and vodka and painted it on. I used food gel and brushes to paint on Raven Queen.

Cakes Fit for a Boy

2015-09-15T10:25:00.001-07:00

I have several cakes that would be perfect for little boys or big boys.

I'll start out with the earliest one I did. I think this was my second fondant cake, and it shows. We couldn't decide what we wanted to do for my little one's birthday so we opted for a dump truck. What little boy doesn't love dump trucks.

The cake is yellow. The fondant is homemade marshmallow fondant dyed yellow. The tires are rice krispie treats covered in fondant and cut in half. The sides of the truck are yellow candy melts that I smoothed onto a flat service, and then cut out. The dirt is crushed up oreos. This was such a fun cake to make, and my little one enjoyed it a lot.

The next year he wanted Batman so I stuck with something simple, and made the Bat Symbol.

This is white cake with all buttercream decorations. I carved a 13 x 18 cake down to the oval shape. I printed out a bat and traced it onto my cake. I then filled the bat with black buttercream.

My next cake was for a special friend. His mom requested Legos on his cake and sent me a shot of a cake as an idea.

This cake was chocolate with chocolate buttercream, and covered in marshmallow fondant dyed green. I then cut out lots and lots of little rectangles in varying sizes and added them around the cake. Each dot on top was placed individually after I cut it out with a round icing tip. The blocks were made by cutting out thick fondant squares. I think the birthday boy enjoyed it.

My next cake was for a much older boy. My nephew wouldn't give me much to work with, but he said he wanted a Team Fortress cake. I decided to do the logo because that was the quickest and easiest thing to do.

The cake is a lemon/mountain dew flavor with buttercream icing. The buttercream is airbrushed an orange color. The black details are all marshmallow fondant. It was simple, but I think he enjoyed it.

Come back for more cakes soon.

June Cake

2015-02-23T10:52:00.000-08:00

The couple that I did the wedding cake for in November, requested a ninja cake for their son in June. The mom looked up ninja cakes and gave me an inspiration cake to look at.

The cake was a yellow cakes mix which was covered in buttercream and fondant. I then cut out a ninja silhouette. I made nun chucks by making the handles out of fondant. I then made chain out of gray fondant which I painted with a silver luster dust/vodka mixture. I also made ninja stars using the same method.

Here is the result.

December Cake

2015-02-23T10:46:00.000-08:00

My Sister-in-Law thought she was 40 a whole year earlier than what she was. So, I had to make a cake to let her know she really was 40 now.

I saw a cake similar, but I am not sure where are saw it. If you know can just comment and I will give credit to them for the inspiration.

I made a confetti cake and then iced it in buttercream. I covered the whole thing in fondant which I then airbrushed black.

I made several bright colors of fondant and used cutters to cut out symbols. I just cut out what I didn't have cutters for by hand. I rolled colored balls of fondant for the border.

Here is the result.

July Cake

2015-02-23T10:38:00.000-08:00

My nephew's only request was that I make the cake taste like Mountain Dew. So, I went one step further and made the cake look like a Mountain Dew can.

I started with a lemon flavored cake mix then replaced the liquids with Mountain Dew. I also added some extra lemon flavor and Soda Stream "Mountain Dew" flavor to my buttercream. I colored fondant to match the colors in the can. I then cut out the different designs on the logo. For the ends, I made gray fondant and then put silver luster dust mixed with vodka on the ends to make it look like a real can. I lightly airbrushed the whole cake to make it look metallic. I added green colored food gel to make it look like the can had spilt. Here is the result.

November Cakes

2015-02-23T10:31:00.000-08:00

I had two cakes in November.

My son wanted a Minecraft Birthday Party, so I created a Creeper cake.

It was a strawberry cake covered in strawberry buttercream. I made green fondant, and then made small squares out of different colors of green and black. I used my letter fondant cutters to cut out Happy Birthday!

The next cake was a request for my yearly customer that I have in November. They went in a totally different direction this year. They wanted a dragon cake. They wanted a real looking dragon. So, they sent me some pictures for inspiration. It is a strawberry cake covered in buttercream. I airbrushed blue as my background. I then drew on the outline of the dragon and then filled the outline with piping. I smoothed that down with a paper towel. Next, I took food coloring and directly applied in to areas to give it a little bit of depth. Here is the final result.

May Cake

2014-08-12T08:56:00.000-07:00

My niece wanted a hobbit themed cake. She was asking for one way before it was time for her birthday. So, what is an Aunt to do but make her niece what she is asking for.

The hobbit house is chocolate cake dirty iced in chocolate buttercream. I then covered it in marshmallow fondant. I made rocks and a path out of gray fondant, and piped in buttercream grass using the Wilton grass tip.

Bilbo is made of a wire frame covered in fondant.

Gandalf is made of a wire frame and covered in fondant as well. His staff was a kebob stick cut down and covered in fondant.

April Cakes

2014-07-31T14:03:00.000-07:00

April brought another birthday and Easter.

My brother had his birthday this month. He loves hunting and fishing. My husband and him went to a gun show, and they saw a poster. My brother commented that he liked it. So, a cake idea was born.

Here is the poster.

Here is the cake.

It is a strawberry cake dirty iced in strawberry buttercream. I then covered the whole thing in marshmallow fondant. I created a stencil and I airbrushed it with red. I took a toothbrush that hadn't been used yet, and flicked the same color on the cake for the splatter.

For Easter, we went to a family reunion. They were having a cake walk so I whipped up a cake real quick.

I used a simple white cake that was dirty iced in buttercream. I then took marshmallow fondant and covered the cake. I made grass for the sides and I used Easter cookie cutters for the rabbit and carrots.

March Cakes

2014-05-20T08:48:00.000-07:00

I made two cakes in March. One was for my sister-in-law's birthday. She requested a hobbit cake. She wants me to do a hobbit house for her daughter's birthday in May so she wanted something different than that. I decided to make a book.

The cake was a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream. I thought about using the leftover maroon fondant from my mom's cake in February, but I decided to make green instead. I put a strip of white fondant around the cake for the pages. I used a fondant tool to add lines, and I used luster dust and cocoa powder to age the pages. I added some fondant strips on the binding before I covered the whole cake in the green fondant. I then etched in the lettering and J. R. R. Tolkien's logo. After that, I painted the letters and the binding with a paste made from vodka and gold luster dust. My sister-in-law really liked her cake.

The next cake was for my niece's 2nd birthday. Her mom asked me to make a 'Melmo' cake. So, I started by searching for inspiration. I found the following Elmo Cake and used the same color scheme modifying my final version a little.

The cake was white confetti cake with buttercream frosting then covered in yellow fondant. I used cookie cutters for the big and little Elmos, stars and two. The letters for the name were cut by hand.

February Cakes

2014-05-08T10:35:00.000-07:00

I made two cakes in February. Sorry it's taken me so long to post them.

My daughter turned 8 in February, and has been obsessed with Winx Club. It's an older cartoon that is on Netflix. She really wanted a Bloom Cake. So, I got to work designing it.

The inside is a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream. The outside is marshmallow fondant. To get Bloom just right I cut out each color section and overlaid it on an image I had downloaded from the internet. I then transferred them onto my cake and outlined them with black buttercream.

My mother also had a birthday in February. She is a quilter so I ran with that theme.

The cake was a white cake with buttercream icing which was then covered in fondant. I colored the quilt pieces to maroon because that is my mom's favorite color. I cut out numbers with a cookie cutter and sandwiched a lollipop stick in between. All the maroon pieces were then detailed with a fondant tool I had.

November Cakes

2014-01-21T07:33:00.000-08:00

There were a lot of cakes in November. Definitely a busy month for us. We have three birthdays in our family alone. Only one of the cakes I did was for our birthdays, though. The rest were for clients.

First up the fun ninjago cake. My son loves Kai of the Lego Ninjago cartoon series. So, we just had to have a Kai cake.

Kai is a strawberry cake with buttercream icing overlayed with red fondant with yellow and black accent fondant pieces.

The next cake is an under the sea cake for a friend from church.

This cake is all buttercream. I used my airbrush to color the whole cake blue. I then used several colors of buttercream to make the fish and sea live. The purple plant was done using the petal technique. I will show you another cake soon where I used this same technique. The rest was just made with several different wilton tips.

More November cakes to come soon.

If you would like to see any tutorials in the future on anything, please let me know.

Kicks on Route 66

2013-10-14T08:10:00.000-07:00

Here are the cakes my co-workers wanted me to make for them for a baby shower. They had decided that the theme was going to be travel and cars. The mom to be was decorating the nursery with cars.

They asked if I could make Route 66 sign in the colors of a blanket that was bought for the nursery. So, I went to work on a cake.

The Route 66 Cake is a two layer, one tier chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream covered in marshmallow fondant. The details are also done in fondant.

They also asked me to make a smaller cake for the big brother so he felt special at the baby shower as well. We decided on a license plate.

The license plate cake for the big brother is a two layer, one tier white confetti cake with plain buttercream covered in marshmallow fondant. The details are all fondant except the word Texas and the name of the big brother. Here is a picture of the cakes at the shower. I was told that several commented at how well they liked the cakes.

It's Hunting Season

2013-10-07T06:44:00.000-07:00

My Dad's Birthday was back in September. He likes to hunt, fish, raise cattle, work with his pecan trees, and generally just be outside.

I decided for his birthday to make him a camo cake with some little additions on top.

I created little bullets out of fondant to put on the cake. The bullets were a big hit because everyone wanted one. I guess I should have made more. The icing was buttercream colored to different camo colors.

I put random blobs of each color on the side to make my camo pattern. I then smoothed the whole cake with a viva paper towel. After that, I added the border, wording and bullets to the cake. It was a pretty simple cake to create.

Woo! Pig! Sooie!

2013-09-30T06:38:00.001-07:00

We have a little piggy fun today.

My co-worker is from Arkansas and went to the University of Arkansas, home of the Razorbacks. We try to have cake on our birthdays in our office. Who doesn't love cake. So, I volunteered to make the cake. This was my first time actually decorating a cake for one of them. Usually, we just do simple cakes or cupcakes. I decided we needed a decorated cake.

I made a chocolate cake using a white cake mix with 1/3 cup of cocoa added to the ingredients. I then made chocolate buttercream to ice the cake with. It turned out delish.

I decorated the sides with the Pig Call. The pig was done freehand. You could easily do a frozen butter cream transfer. What I did was print out a razorback and trace the main outline onto my cake. I then filled the space with the maroon color and look at my printout to draw in the rest. My co-workers liked it so much that they commissioned me to make a cake for them a few weeks after this. That cake will come later.

So, if you enjoyed this cake, call the pigs for me!

All Because Two People Fell in Love

2013-09-23T08:34:00.000-07:00

Back in July, my parents celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. That is an amazing feat in this day and age. All you hear now days is how people are divorcing. I am glad I have such a great example in my parents and other family members for that matter. My grandparents were married for 53 years, and my aunt and uncle have been married for 47 years. All truly great examples of what love and hard work look like.

For my parent's anniversary we had a little surprise party with just family. I made a cake that kind of mimicked their wedding cake. I think everyone liked it.

Don't look too closely at the ruffles or borders. This was my first cake to do a lot of borders. It's how it taste that counts, right? The top picture is after it was taken 2 hours to my parents house so there's a little wear and tear.

The cake did look pretty good before I had to take it on it's long journey.

Playing Catch Up

2013-09-16T06:55:00.000-07:00

Sorry I haven't posted anything lately. I don't really have any accuses. I just didn't want to get on here. Isn't that sad?

Well, I have done a few cakes since the last time I was here. So, I will let you see what I've been up to.

First, I made a cake for my Memaw. She is a huge fan of the Texas Rangers. She watches them every chance she gets. So, I decided to make her a Ranger cake. It wasn't anything too fancy, but it did turn out rather cute.

I used the ruffle technique that is so popular right now. I started by measuring around my cake with a tape measure so I could space my ruffles out evenly. I think I ended up making my ruffles about an inch wide.

The colors remind me so much of rodeo days or 4th of July. You could definitely make a really cute 4th of July cake using ruffles. If you would like better instructions on how to do this please let me know.

The next cake will come quicker, promise.
