Pulling Into The Station - JKL Stop

Wow! It's been a while since I did a Pulling Into The Station. Let me see if I remember how I have been doing these. HA! I decided to continue with the alphabet travels we have been doing. So, our next stop is J. Be sure and find the joy in baking by visiting Joy The Baker.

Just look at this Pear and Cranberry Crumble she made. I had to wipe to drool off the screen because it looks so good.

Big Birthday Bash

Little Man's Birthday was last weekend, and we had a wonderful party with friends and family. I decided to go with the theme of dump trucks. I think everyone had a great time, and it is definitely a birthday that he will not forget. We had pin little man in the dump truck instead of pin the tail on the donkey. Daddy drew the truck, and I printed out pictures of the little man.

We then had a pinata which was great fun.

After the games, came the cake. I am rather proud of my cake. I used store bought cake mixes, and shaped them into a dump truck. I then covered them with fondant, and made the sides of the truck with candy melts. The dirt was smushed oreos. The tires were rice krispy pucks covered in fondant. I think little man enjoyed it.

After cake was presents, but there weren't any pictures that didn't have other children in them. So, I didn't want to post those without permission from parents. Overall, I think it was a great party.

It's in the bag

I bought some tote bags on sale after Halloween last year to decorate and use as candy bags for the kids. I finally got around to decorating them with only a couple of weeks to spare. Nothing like the last minute. I used my silhouette to cut a template on freezer paper. You can purchase images from the silhouette store, or you can do what I did and just find images off of the internet. Sorry no images for this part. I then ironed it on to the bag.

After I got it ironed on the bag, I took some black acrylic paint and a sponge brush and dobbed paint onto the template. Don't paint on big strokes because that could pull up part of the template causing you to get paint where you really didn't want it to go.

And here is the finished product all ready to be filled and candy and goodies galore.

One Little Indian Girl

This week is Homecoming here in our small town. So, the school is having themes each day. Today was Cowboy and Indian Day. So, I dressed my daughter as an Indian and sent her to school. If you wait to the last minute to come up with something don't sweat it. A costume can sometimes be pulled off in a matter of minutes. I had an XL brown shirt that I was planning on using to make an altered shirt. I just didn't know what I was going to do to with it.

We had a Pochahontas outfit that I had made her last year that still fit, but I didn't think the school would like it too much if I sent A in it because it is just a one shoulder dress. So, I had to come up with something else. I took the brown shirt and put it on her to see how much I needed to take it in. I turned it wrong side out to sew it. This was a mistake because I was going to make fringe out of the left over fabric on the outer edges. When I turned it back the right way, all my fringe fabric was on the inside. So rather than use the seem ripper and take out what I just sewed, I just cut the tag off the back. I cut off the bottom of the t-shirt and the original sleeves so unless you really get to looking you never would know that it's on wrong. Also, the handband is part of the original sleeve. I just cut part of it off, and it's already sewed in a loop so you don't have to sew it of tie it in any way.

Hope this gives you a quick idea for a costume. It would be perfect for Halloween since it's just around the corner.

Western Themed Wedding Cake

I made some cakes for a very casual western themed wedding. So, I just thought I would share my creations. On both cakes I made the fondant and buttercream icing from scratch. The cake is from a mix.

This first cake is a small layer that I made for them to have for their anniversary cake. The roses are the first ones I have made with fondant, and this was my first wedding cake as well.

The second cake was a two layer cake with roses and a rope W as a topper.

I am so glad that the bride and groom liked their cakes, and I hope they have many years of happiness together.

New Name Shirt

4th of July Fun

For 4th of July, I usually like to get us all patriotic shirts to wear. This year I decided to design my own.

I got a tulip tie dye kit, and made red, white and blue tie dyed shirts for all of us.

I found my kit at Wal-Mart, but I am sure you could probably find it at craft stores as well.

Just follow the directions in the kit, and your shirts will turn out great. There are several other pattern options in the direction sheet besides the two I choice to try.

I also baked a flag cake. I got the idea from I Am Baker.

Cake Shop

I have made my kids birthday cakes for some time now.

I would like to get into making cakes for a little side money.

Here are a few that I have done in the past. I can either make the cake to go along with an invitation you already have, or I can help you come up with a theme based on what the birthday girl/boy likes.

For Father's Day I decided I wanted to do something cheap but creative. I had seen several soda pop label variations on line, and thought they were cute.

I downloaded the labels from Delightfully Noted for her soda bottles, but I didn't buy orange soda so I didn't use her exact label.

I changed mine up a little bit by changing the colors to match my sodas, and changing the stars because I couldn't find an image of the same star.

Here are my labels for both IBC Root Beer and IBC Cream Soda.

Glass-Etched Dish

I have seen this done on several craft blogs, but I can't remember which ones. It's kind of hard to remember when you're a blog-surfaholic.

My Memaw's birthday is coming up, and she is always taking food up to the church for fellowship meals. I thought I would come up with a surefire way to get her dish back.

The items I gathered for this project were a glass dish, contact paper and etching cream.

I used my silhouette to cut out the design into the contact paper. I then adhered it to the back to the dish, and applied the etching cream. I left mine on about 6 minutes.

It gave the surface a light etching. So, now my Memaw has a dish that can never accidentally be taken from someone else because her name will always be on it.

Next time I do something like this, I will reverse my image so that you can read the name through the dish.

I got my contact paper at Target in the cleaning supplies section, and I got the etching cream at either Hobby Lobby or Micheal's.

Reverse Applique Shirt

I made this cute shirt for my nephews birthday. I think it turned out rather cute for the first time that I have done reverse applique.

I bought a shirt on sale at Michael's, and then I found a t-shirt that my husband never wore to use as the red part. This is definitely a great way to use those promotional shirts you sometimes get.

I printed out my name, and then traced it onto tissue paper. I pinned the red to the inside of the shirt, and then pinned the name to the front. I then took my time sewing around each letter. After that, I cut the access red fabric away on the inside of the shirt. Then, I picked the tissue paper that was left out of the design. When all was done, I took a pair of sharp scissors and carefully cut away the blue shirt to reveal the red underneath. The design and color possibilities are endless.

I like the red and blue so much that I am thinking about making USA shirts for July 4th. I have also thought about selling these. If anybody is interested in a shirt, let me know.

One of the commenters posed a good question. Will the edges of the cut shirt fray any? It depends on which type of fabric it is. I think with the knits it might roll up a little but not fray With other fabrics, it would fray a little.

Bieber Fever

It's been almost a month since I created this cake. So, I guess now would be a good time to post it.

There is definitely a story to it. I had my cakes, fondant and icing done way ahead of time. Thank Goodness! This was my first commissioned cake, and I wanted everything to be perfect. Guess I should have paid more attention to the date on the invitation.

I thought the party was on Saturday night, but it turned out to be on Friday night. So as soon as I grabbed the kidlets from daycare, I hauled booty home to create the cake. After my major panic attack and with the help of my wonderful hubby, this is the end result of working fast and furious for about an hour and a half. The bottom part was supposed to be piano keys, but we just ran out of time. Other than that, I think it turned out rather well.

Cute as A Cupcake

Today happens to be my niece's birthday. She had a party this weekend so I decided to make her something special for the day. I made her a skirt with a matching shirt.

I got out some of Audrey's skirts to get an idea of how I would like to design my skirt. Then, I went to town. I decided I wanted a skirt that had a flat waist band in the front with elastic in the back. I just kind of winged my pattern. I got this fun fabric at Wal-Mart from the clearance bin. I made one skirt, and let Audrey try it on, and it was too big for my niece. So, I made another one. I don't know if it fits her, but it was smaller than my first attempt.

I decided that I needed a fun shirt to go along with my skirt. So, I did a search on the internet for cupcake images. I then took that image made an outline that I could use with my silhouette. This is my first project with my silhouette, and I am happy with how it turned out. I appliqued the fabric onto my shirt, and sewed around it to give it more staying power. I love how the fabric mimics the lines on a cupcake wrapper. I also decided to add a little bling for sprinkles on the top of the cupcake because what little girl doesn't love bling.

I hope she enjoys her outfit, and I plan to make a lot more in the future.

Buckets 'O Fun

This is just a quick post on how to put a little wow factor into gifts this summer season. We had three birthdays to go to last weekend so we were quite busy around here. My simple and quick gift was from Dollar General.

I took a cute sand bucket and filled it with all types of pool goodies like goggles, pool sticks and beach balls. Instead of tissue paper, I bought a cheap plastic table cloth and cut it up into several squares.

For my gift tag, I took the shovel that came with the bucket and traced it onto orange paper. I then included the birthday person's name and who it was from. Real simple, yet real fun.

Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. With the holiday and then having a sty that made my eye swell shut, I really didn't feel like getting on the computer.

From Mess to Nest

Sorry there is not Pulling Into The Station this week, but I do have a fun treat post to share with you.

Who would thing that something so cute could come from what's in this bowl, but it did.

I got the idea from Bake @ 350. Go visit her blog. She has lots of amazing recipes and ideas.

Here is the recipe copied exactly from the Bake @ 350 blog.

Bird's Nests

3 c. mini marshmallows
3 TBSP unsalted butter
1/2 tsp vanilla
4 c. dry chow mein noodles
small candies, jelly beans, m & m's, etc.

Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.

Over low heat, melt the marshmallows and butter in a large saucepan.

Once melted, stir in the vanilla, then the chow mein noodles.

Coat your hands liberally with shortening, (butter doesn't work as well) and have some nearby for re-coating.
