A Citrus Bonsai

I got the name of this plant wrong in my previous post and have updated the label as Feroniella lucida. I thought it's a Zanthoxylum fagara. But after taking a closer look and doing some search online, I think this is a citrus tree native to Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and the island of Java in Indonesia instead.

The fruit is commonly known as Wood Apple or Java Feroniella, but this little shrub has yet bore any. Nevertheless, it is a robust plant as it can withstand the harsh hot sun here. Pruning keeps it tidy and small for a short while only.

The leaves let off a pungent olive oil scent when squashed. The branches are thorny and this is one thing that I do not like about the plant, as when I prune the branches, I need to be careful by not holding the cuttings too hard.

I recall picking up this particular plant from a nursery many years ago. This plant has been in this same pot for about ten years now. After a hard pruning, the plant can just quickly grow back its leaves and branches. The pic below shows its lush state after a hard pruning about three months (compared to its pre-pruning condition as shown in the first pic at the start of this post).

One Versatile Bonsai

Buxus harlandii popularly called Harland Boxwood is great for partial shade and full sun environment here in Malaysia. It is heat as well as humidity tolerant. The only place that I have not grown this plant is indoors.

This particular potted Harland Boxwood, looking like a tree, is more than ten years old now. I did not realised this till I checked my previous post that I had written about this plant. Oh, time flies so fast! In fact as far as I can remember, I was growing this plant way before that post.

This coastal southeast China native has tiny leaves and is really demure in size. I just love its slow-growing nature as it needed less attention in pruning. Also it is such a hardy plant that requires little attention in watering and feeding.

Perhaps if the plant is grown in the ground it will grow taller as I read that the plant can grow up to three feet tall. Also, the plant bears tiny pale yellow flowers, which I have never noticed mine doing so.

Try growing a bonsai and you will find that it is so strange that a plant just stay small for many years ;)

Crinum Lily

This purple crinum lily that bloomed in my garden on first week of August is more of a foliage plant than a flowering plant. Earlier, the plant did not bloom while I was growing it in a small pot. Even so, I take comfort that its strap-like deep purple foliage is not only beautiful but also adds interest to my little garden.

Once I transplanted and split the clump into a pot that tripled the depth and width of the original pot, it grew more leaves and flowered only many months later down the road.

A stalk of buds emerged suddenly.

After that, the buds stayed as buds for a few days.

One bud opened first...

...followed by three other buds.

This bog plant is able to thrive with just one-time watering even when growing under the hot sun every day. The pretty pink spider-like bloom sadly does not tolerate the sun well. It wilted in just one day:(

Just In Time For Some Mustard Greens

The mustard green seeds, which I have sown in June, sprouted easily with just a thin layer of soil covering them and kept moist till the true leaves appeared.

After that, I just make sure the soil is moist all the time by watering two times a day - once in the morning and another time in the heat of the day or late afternoon.

Mustard green (Brassica juncea) requires only about six weeks to mature and it's ready for harvesting. Harvested mine after seventh week as one of the plants flowered already. I must say that they turn out smallish in size as I didn't put extra effort in feeding and they tasted slightly bitter after cooking.

Here was the timeline. The small round seeds were sown beginning of June. They sprouted in just a few days time. Can you spot the cotyledons?

After about 2 weeks, the true leaves were still small though growing steadily.

A month later, the leaves were still tender. Though edible, I didn't harvest them.

The growth progress of this annual is fast, and it's an easy vegetable to plant. I just gave them some time, and attention in watering, and feeding during those two months of growth.

Reversion Of Tricolor Tradescantia

Botanically named Tradescantia spathacea 'Dwarf Tricolor' has upright smooth leaves that are variegated with white stripes on the upper side. The clumping plant looks pink as the lower side of the leaves are in a light shade of purple.

After growing this plant for some time, one day as I was watering the plant, I noticed that the whole of the older rosette turned muted green. There were no more white on the upper side of the leaves. The pic below shows the affected rosette that was growing under my porch.

I have another Tricolor Tradescantia clump growing out in open under full sun is also affected.

Even the small rosette that was growing out from the same stem was strangely in muted green too.

Both rosettes have definitely reverted to the colour of its parent plant.

After cutting off one the affected rosettes, I dunk it into some water for it to root. It rooted in just a couple of days. Oh, it is such a fast growing plant! After ten days in water and there are already plenty of roots growing out from the stem...

Variegation In Creeping Fig

The variegation on the leaves of this Ficus pumila is not permanent. After a while the plant will turn green without the white edges.

However, it can revert to its variegation form. Or, it can grow out a new albino shoot like this one...

The pink leaves at the end of the shoot will turn white. To discourage the plant from growing more albino shoots, I have cut off to the last node which is to the soil level.

I am not sure why it turned out this way as the plant is growing in my very bright and warm porch. Perhaps this shoot has grown out from the back of the pot that is mostly shaded but the plant's own leaves. What do you think?

Garden Crotons At Okinawa's Street Gardens In Winter

During my stay in the Okinawa main island (which is the largest of the Okinawa and Ryukyu islands of Japan) last December, I saw many varieties of garden croton being grown along the streets in home gardens, store fronts and places of tourist interest. The gardeners there are just so fond of the plant's colourful foliage!

They made good use of the plant's leaf that comes in various shapes to create texture, hence giving their green patches more contrast and excitement.

Even in winter when the temperature drops, the garden crotons were looking quite happy!

There were so many cultivars being planted.

Some have even grown into a tree.

Garden croton is botanically named Codiaeium variegatum.

Although there are so many cultivars of this species, with each one manifesting different leaf colourations, patterns and shapes, you are still able to recognise a garden croton easily. This is because all of them come in a mixture of bright tropical colours and their variegated leaves are thick and leathery.

I have not planted a twisted leaf one before. Have you?

A Single-Petaled Gloxinia Raised From Seed

Here is a chronicle of this beautiful single-petaled Gloxinia Avanti Peach Rose (F1) from seed to flower. Recently, the seedlings grew in size slowly for two years before they started to produce their first flowers.

I sowed the seeds on 20 October 2022 by covering them with a thin layer of soil in a small pot.

While waiting for the seeds to germinate, I kept them protected by overturning a pot...

The seeds sprouted within a week.

The seedlings were still tiny even after a week...

And were still small after almost a year (see the pot on the left side in the pic below, taken on 4 August 2023). During this period, I kept them protected from the birds with a sieve...

I stopped noticing the seedlings for some time and then, on 17 September 2024, I noticed buds forming, yay!

These were the first blooms and true to seed, they have the exact colouration as the picture of blooms printed on the seed packet.

The red double-petaled Gloxinia besides it, which has been in the garden for some time, were pushing out some flowers as well. How lovely...

I plucked one leaf of the new Gloxinia to propagate more plants. This way of propagation I find will yield a faster outcome as opposed to seed propagation.

Propagating A Dwarf Hydrangea

Finally, here's a new post from me, after a lapse of one year! So where have I been all this while? Hmm...

My dwarf hydrangea is a short bush that comes in a small plastic pot from a florist shop. Chanced upon it while walking past the shop as the blooms were bright and big. Took home a deep pink one and planted into a medium-sized pot ;)

No ID was given, since the space between leaves are small, I guessed it's kinda a dwarf variety. Anyway, the bush is compact in growth habit and short.

The bracts were green at first, just like the regular ones.

Then it turned pink and later, deeper in colour.

Interestingly, the bracts changed to green again with pink edges as they faded.

When the colour of the bracts began to fade, I cut the umbels of blooms off their stems and placed them onto a plate with some water for the blooms to dry up. They turned brown after a while.

As for the stem tip cuttings, I used them to make more plants! I just poke them into some soil and they sprouted out new shoots...

The new shoots grew out from the soil very slowly.

The shoot (in the pic below) is a few months old already, still really tiny in size.

With this hydrangea, it is really smallish in size. Good thing is that it requires only a small pot to flourish. Funnily, it has only been flourishing more leaves than blooms.

That's the latest story from my little garden. Have fun multiplying plants in yours :)

Canna 'Tropical Salmon' Are True To Seed

I came across some dwarf versions of Cannas online last year and thought it would be interesting to see if these lilies will grow true to the seed. Searched and bought some seeds online. Fortunately they are not expensive :D

They come in a few bright colours, so I chose a salmon one and it turned out great.

The pic below shows the first bloom...

The flower will however fade to become more pinkish after a day or two due to the hot afternoon sun here.

The plant was indeed true to the seed - shortish in height, smallish in size and the flower colour is indeed salmon.

It didn't require a big pot nor space to develop. Hence, I was only growing it in a small pot and before blooming, it only grew to about 30cm high.

Flashback to October last year, 2022, this Canna sprouted within ten days from one of the three seeds sown.

By February this year, it has already sent out its flower buds and they started to open in about a week :D The whole process was just a matter of waiting for the sprouts to mature and bloom without much fertilising. Just needed to repot the little plant one time, easy peasy!

The flower can look orangey sometimes...

And after all the buds have bloomed, I cut the plant down to about 5cm high.

After some time, a few new shoots appeared from the rhizome and now, I am waiting for the shoots to mature and bloom again...

Hey, dwarf Canna 'Tropical Salmon' seeds can produce plants that are identical to the parent. Not only that, they are really easy to start. Try sowing some of these kind of seeds in your garden :D

Warm Loving Plants

Here is a belated update dated 5 July 2022 from my small garden and indoor plants. They are made up of mostly plants that do not require much attention. Planted outside, they just need to be watered everyday like the gloxinia which I had about earlier. The plant has just gone on to produce its third flush of blooms even when I didn't add any fertiliser to it since the time of purchase.

Next is my pot of herbs that I have been replanting regularly. It is dedicated to growing stevia and mint. Both of these herbs mature and perish quickly. Hence, to keep them going, I have to prune the stevia as soon as I spot its white blooms. As for the mint, I would take cuttings of it as soon as it grows more leaves. Else it can turn leggy.

The little terrariums inside my house are 'thirsty' all the time due to the little soil it has. Also the mosses that are growing on the soil, which always in need of moisture. Otherwise they will just dry up.

Flowers please the eyes and stop my steps especially when I spot them in the morning :) Look at my white periwinkles with pink centres in the pic below. Aren't they lovely?

One morning as I was walking past my pot of rain lilies, I can see some black seeds in between a small opening of the pods.

I gently rub the pods so that the seeds would fall into my palm. I can feel that most of the seeds are really thin, so not sure if they are viable.

New Old Plants

It has been a while since I last posted an update of my garden. Now that everything is almost back to normal, I can now shop and add/replace some pretty plants to my garden in addition to the regular robust ones I still have.

I used to have several gloxinias with different colours but with time, they have faded and died one by one. This red one I saw at a nursery the other day was selling at a reasonable price hence I brought one back.

I also bought a new Watermelon Peperomia. However, I don't recall that the new leaves of my previous one were pink. This is so special, perhaps a new variety. In any case, I really hope this one can survive as long or even longer than the old one I had years ago ;)

Besides that I have made a new terrarium in preparation for my next workshop...

Strong Chia Plants

The chia plants that I have raised in my garden is thriving under the hot tropical sun and subject to torrential rains too. They seem to be doing well.

Amittedly they are all squeezed into a small space as I have packed so many of the seedling into a 12-inch pot. Look at the pic below, I even tucked in a sweet potato plant!

I think I might have to thin out this crowd as they are going to grow bigger and taller soon.

Meanwhile, my sandpaper vine is flowering wonderfully. Enjoy the blooms here...

Sprouting Chia

We eat chias to keep ourselves healthy. Because they are seeds, they can also be grown into sprouts or microgreens. Recently I started growing some and here is the result...

First, I placed some chias onto some gravels and soil and left the pot near the window of my kitchen. The spot is sunny in the morning. I water the chias regularly to keep them moist all the time.

As the chias sprout out roots and shoots, I protected them with a transparent cover.

The sprouts grew fast and within a couple of days, they shot up more than a centimetre tall.

After I harvested the sprouts, a second batch emerged...

In the garden, I have also sprinkled some chias into a small pot of soil and they sprouted quickly too.

Now, I have some chia plants growing in my garden and ready for transplanting to a sunny spot.

Hey! Gorgeous😃

While the flowering plants are at their best, some of my foliage plants are doing exceptionally good as their leaves look rather strong and remarkable.

My Alocasia 'Polly' in pic below has been producing more and more leaves, and hence grown bigger in size. Sometimes this plant can be really bare as its leaf does not seem to be growing and at times yellowing.

See it? A grasshopper on the leaf of my Green Zebra Plant? I almost didn't see it till I looked closer. Anyway, I saw many grasshoppers in my garden last week which left many holes on my hibiscus. Good thing they are all gone now.

The dwarf Ti Plant in my porch has grown much taller and the leaves are glossy and dark. It is looking really handsome now but soon the leaves at the bottom will dry up as its stem grows taller. When that happens, I will have to chop it down to half its height.

The best performer of the month is this alocasia in pic below... It has grown out so many new leaves while the old ones are still intact (usually they tend to turn yellow and wither). I am so glad 😍

The mother plant of below newly grown China doll plant has unfortunately not been doing well. I am so happy to see this new plant that I have propagated using a stem tip cutting is growing strong.

Now I am worried about my iron cross begonia. The 'spare' plant that I had earlier withered out of a sudden. Now just left this mother plant. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Covid Blues No More

Here are a few updates from my small garden and indoor plants - in a city in tropical Malaysia. Although we garden whole year round, sometimes the scorching hot sun and the prolonged rain will pose problems. Growing plants in containers allows us to move them around to thrive better. That was I did to my rex begonia vine. I moved the plant from growing it out in the open under a shrub to under the porch.

This vine (not a begonia though the common name has the word begonia) can actually take a lot of sun out in the open but it fairs better when there is shade in the afternoon. And when you let the vine stretch its stems as long as they can, the plant will thrive even better.

Recently, mine is flowering. See this video.

Earlier I grew some microgreens. The packet came with the name clover. They turned out to be really tiny. So I planted the seeds into two little pots to tend them as ornamental plants instead. I settled them at the window of my kitchen. Have you grown a clover like this before?

The little clover plants seem to be growing really slow.

On another note, I am loving my portulaca plant these days. When the weather is good, the plant never fails to reward me with its little bright blooms...

Rare Occasions

Recently, Rosa 'Othello' sent out a long stem that bore a big bud outside my gate that eventually blossomed into a beautiful pink rose. You can see it in the second pic.

This big blossom made me wondered, how in the world the rose bush can endure the hot blazing sunshine here?

There was a faint sweet rosy smell in the air when the rose opened that morning...

The whole crown-of-thorns plant below was rotting away many months ago leaving several surviving stems in the pot. So, I poked the stems back into the soil, hoping that they will take root again and they did and now, they are even flowering :D.

The little pink blooms all over the top of the plant are like icing on a cake.

This is another beauty that has shown up too - for the first time! It is a bloom that appeared from my white flowering Papilionanthe Poepoe.

This Papilionanthe Poepoe was planted in my garden several years ago from a cutting that was about one and a half feet long. Now it has reached a few feet high. And as it settled on a pot, I have to raise my hands up high to snap a shot of the pure white bloom with yellow centre...

The rain lily below in yellow and apricot shades did not come with an ID and it rarely blooms. Do you have one that is similar in shade in your garden?

I made the herb bouquet below with a few sprigs of Thai basil, dill and marjoram. Sat it into some water in a little bowl next to the kitchen window for myself to enjoy while cooking. Once the sprigs have taken root, I would use them to grow more herb plants.

Harvest Anytime Crop - Sprouts & Microgreens

Growing crops for own consumption is difficult when gardening space is limited. But, I found that growing microgreens or sprouts frees me from finding space for the roots of vegetables to stretch deep and wide.

Though little in size, microgreens are highly nutritious. That is why many call them superfood!

Interestingly, microgreens are economical to grow. You don't need a lot of tools, supplies or skills to do so.

Nowadays there are already suppliers in our own local market selling the proper seeds, trays and tools needed to grow them.

Just keep watering the sprouts to ensure that they stay moist all the time. Beans are sprouted in the dark by keeping them covered after soaking.

Once sprouted, you can harvest them anytime - at any stage of growth - you wish :D

The beans in the pictures uploaded in this post are labelled as 'creeping beans' and they just need about three days (including soaking time) to reach the microgreen stage - grow one set of true leaves.

Growing Way Too Fast

I am not sure if it's the hot sunny days or the frequent fertilisers I have applied, my plants seem to grow really fast these days. My spider tresses plant has reached the end of its flowering stage so quickly. There are not many flowers on the shrub right now as most have dropped.

Meanwhile my sandpaper vine has been flowering non-stop. The cool weather earlier triggered the blooms but the flowering didn't stop even when it has gotten really hot in recent weeks.

The pot of alternanthera that I have for years has also been growing really fast. Even though I had just cut the stems last week, it has regrown so much already.

The stevia herb grows and flowers fast and more so this time around. Hence, I have rooted some cuttings of the herb to ensure there is stevia in my garden all the time. I have also received a potted oregano cuttings from a friend and they seems to be getting on fine :)

I really like the white trailing that I have more and more these days. The plant seems to flower more frequently than previously, yay :D

Impatiens walleriana came back to life 😊💧🍃

I have a really hot porch as my house faces the afternoon sun. So, those plants that you see me feature from my porch are really good heat-tolerant plants. Impatiens walleriana is one of them.

The snaps before and after surviving the hot afternoon is shown in the video. The pic below was snapped two days before.

By 5:00PM, the plant looked like it was going to die after a very hot day. I pour a little water into the pot and left it there for it to revive and it did as usual. In the morning it was perky again :)

At another corner of my porch, I was delighted to see the first bloom coming from a cutting that I have left to root in a pot.

This white trailing rose has indeed been really strong. It has withstood the hot weather for almost a week now. The petals just curled back and were not scorched by the blazing hot sun.

The other plant that can really endured the heat is the spider tresses. The shrub is currently throwing out a lot of blooms.

An orchid that I do not know the name was flowering again. The flower was pale purple at first but the colour got stronger over a day.

Glad to see this happenings even when the weather is dry and hot.

🌼 Yellow Delights 🌼

Yellow blooms are delightful additions to any garden. They come in different shades. Some are bright, some pale.

While they may make you think of the sun in the sky, you will certainly associate the flower below to lemon. Its delicate paper-thin pale yellow petals can look really bright once the sun is up, earning the common name, lemon ginger.

The perky flower will surey put a smile on our faces. Only thing is that it doesn't bloom many, just one to several at a time.

Have you come across a four o'clock before? The flowers are night beauties. They open from evening to late morning the next day and smell heavenly as well :D

Hibiscuses have amazing colours and they open throughout the day. The yellow one that I have has a pink eye but its vibrant petals fade fast under the blazing hot sun. If the day is really hot, the colour can turn quite pale by late afternoon.

In the porch, the flower of my episcia opens to a creamy yellow bloom. It looks pretty cool against its dark foliage :).

The flowers of my firecracker plant although in pale yellow, looks like firecrackers as the name suggests due to their shape which is tubular and hanging downwards in clusters...

Almost every day it is sunny and hot here, hope the weather is more moderate where you live.

Surprise teapot😲 - mung bean sprouts💚

Mung bean sprouts (Botanical name: Vigna radiata) growing in a teapot 😊

Just pre-soak the mung beans for 6-8 hours. Keep the pot covered, rinse the soaked beans regularly and you will get to harvest plenty of bean sprouts within 48 hours.

I have also harvested the sprouts just after 24 hours and they look like this...

I like the taste of both. So now I harvest them depending on what I cook them with 😉

Sprouts have high concentration of nutrients. That is why they are known as a superfood or living food.

Small Bright Blooms

The pics and short video that I am sharing in this post were recorded during the rainy season we just had. The flowers in the pic below, though small in size, have colours that really stood out against the green foliage backdrop.

Normally the white roses fade fast as the weather can be really hot in the afternoon. However, due to the cooler temperature, they all remained perky for weeks.

So are the blooms of the pale pink miniature rose.

Every yellow four o'clock that bloomed graced this nook from evening right to late morning the next day and complimented the white and pink roses wonderfully.

I managed to snap a pic of all them one evening right before the sun went down. As you can imagine, I was still able to enjoy the blooms whenever I walk into the garden at night.

New Year Bliss

Welcome Year 2021! Will the year be kind to us all? I pray it will.

For a start, I am happy to see some of my dying plants bouncing back to life - like my golden money plant in the pic below. Earlier it had almost shedded all its leaves.

My Dracaena compact 'Janet Craig' looked horrible at one point so I chopped off all the leaves, basically the whole plant. Slowly new leaves grew back from the stump. Now, it is a totally new plant altogether. Hmm... this would make a pretty indoor plant, don't you think so?

The dark-leaf begonia in the pic below has not appeared bushy and healthy for a long time. Recently it did. Perhaps it is liking the cooler temperature due to the rainy weather.

My iron cross begonia can just stop growing and lose its vigour all of a sudden. So, at this point, I am so pleased to see it growing healthily.

Can you see those drops of water at the edges of those new leaves? I learnt that this phenomena is called plant guttation.

There were many blooms on my dwarf azalea earlier and now the plant seems to be taking a rest. The bloom in the pic below opened after a rather cold night.

Normally, I tend my houseplants by lining them up on the console cabinet that is against a wall and located between my living room and dining area. Due to the lack of light, I have been using a free-standing lamp to help the plants to photosynthesise in order for them to stay vibrant.

On a hindsight, the wall that has been empty and dreary all this while, is now decorated with this canvas print, courtesy of PHOTOWALL, to complete an indoor garden room look.
