AT&T cancels Pre 3 launch plans as HP adds 64GB white TouchPad to its online store [UPDATED]

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:46 PM PDT

Yesterday HP broke the hearts of webOS fans everywhere when it announced that it would “discontinue operations” of all webOS hardware, meaning phones and the TouchPad, in Q4 2011. The pain doesn’t stop there, though, as a leaked AT&T email has emerged today to kick those users in their shins and throw a little dirt in their faces. The email, reportedly sent between members of AT&T management this afternoon, reveals that AT&T has canceled its plans to launch the HP Pre3. Of course, AT&T never…

Andy Pad Pro makes film debut, shows off bird slinging skills (video)

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:35 PM PDT

Still waiting to get your affordable Android tablet on? You’ve got a little over a week to go, but here attempting to tide you over is a montage of the Andy Pad Pro. First made official in July (alongside a video of its lesser sibling), the Gingerbread tablet still rocks a 1.2GHz Cortex A8, a “powerful 3D GPU” and 1080p HDMI output. And at £179 (or about $290) the 7-inch capacitive slate won’t break the bank. Ready to see it and its more affordable brother shred through a bevy of Android games? You know the drill: hop on past the break, bud.

AT&T enhances network in part of Manhattan you probably won’t visit

Posted: 19 Aug 2011 05:35 PM PDT

If you’re walking through New York City today, you may notice that your AT&T phone just got a little bit faster. But you probably won’t. The carrier activated a new broadband cell site in Manhattan’s Turtle Bay area in Midtown — somewhere between Times Square and the Upper East Side — in a five-block area that few tourists ever visit. The company says the upgrades are part of a larger plan to enhance coverage across the nation and eventually roll out 4G LTE coverage, with help from recently acquired T-Mobile — that is if all goes well in court, of course.

Description

‘Print to PDF’ allows you to quickly save entire emails, web pages and documents to PDF so you can access them at any time, even when you are offline.

Could there be a suitor for webOS?

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

We’ve been looking for a silver lining in today’s HP squall line. HP’s done making webOS devices, and they might continue working on webOS while exploring their options with what to do with the software. Those options boil down to three likely possibilities: HP licenses webOS to a mobile phone maker, HP sells webOS (or just Palm’s patent portfolio), or HP completely kills webOS.

Obviously we don’t want the last thing to happen, which leaves some other manufacturer to pick up webOS, either as a licensee or purchaser. And, frankly, any manufacturer would be downright stupid to license webOS from HP. The only way to do this can work for webOS to come back to life is for somebody to buy it and its associated patents (likely for even less than the $1.2 billion HP paid for Palm).

So who could possibly buy webOS? Amusingly, this is the conversation we were having a year-and-a-half ago and HP came out of nowhere and bought Palm. And if we were having this conversation a week ago, we’re not sure we’d have any possible suitors that wouldn’t be interested in only picking up the Palm patent portfolio (surely, Google or Apple would love to have patent #7555727: Integrated Handheld Computing and Telephony System and Services).

Google’s purchase of Motorola changed everything. Google says it’s all about the patents, but you and I and your mother all know it’s about more than the patents. Patents are the near term and eventually this whole patent lawsuits mess will sort itself out. Long term, Google has a reason for owning Motorola: they want to be able to control the Android experience from start to finish, so they can put out the phones that they want.

This has to be scaring the bejesus out of the likes of Samsung, HTC, and LG. They’re all Android licensees, and they’re all Windows Phone licensees.

Windows Phone isn’t going as well as any of them would have liked – LG has admitted as much. And now they’re all in the awkward position of potentially having to compete with Google. Not to mention those three also aren’t thrilled about Microsoft’s sweetheart deal with Nokia. Could any of them be interested in purchasing webOS and its patents?

Certainly. HTC’s been busy trying to differentiate themselves, what with their shacking up with Beats. Samsung tried with Bada, and, well, that’s not really catching on. They all are searching for what HP was searching for with Palm: the ability to truly differentiate themselves. They didn’t want to be just another Android license, so they bought Palm and webOS. And then utterly failed with it.

If anybody’s going to buy webOS from HP, I’m going to throw out another predicition and see if I can go three-for-three: Samsung. They have the money, they have tried before with their own OS in Bada, and they have the most to loose between Google/Motorola and Microsoft/Nokia. Apart from that, they also have the manufacturing know-how and facilities (they use almost entirely their own parts in Samsung phones) and are engaged in a drawn-out lawsuit with Apple where owning Palm’s patents could go a long way towards bolstering their defense.

Of course, it’s also entirely possible that nobody will pick up webOS for anything other than its patents. This isn’t a case of Betamax or HD DVD – people really cared whether webOS lived or died and tried again and again to have it succeed. Unfortunately, those people may have been the wrong people.

Right now, we’re stuck in the limbo zone of “is this yet another near-death experience, or is this the end?” We don’t want it to be the end, and we’ll do everything we can to make sure it’s not, but we’re just a blog. The questions boils down to how much HP asks for Palm. The goods – webOS and the patents – could very well be available, all we need is the right highest bidder (again).

Motorola DROID Bionic MAP leak shows $299.99 price tag kicking off September 8th

Posted: 18 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

Seems like we can’t go more than a day or two without another Motorola DROID Bionic leak, huh? Today we’ve got the image you see above, showing that the Bionic has been given a minimum advertised price (MAP) of $299.99 by our friends at Verizon. That means that we’ll likely see it slapped with that price tag when it arrives. Speaking of the Bionic arriving, the MAP is taking effect on September 8th, meaning that that’s likely the day that the handset will hit stores and this whole saga can…

Aaron puts the BlackBerry Bold 9930′s 720p HD camcorder to the test in the Charlotte area. It’s the first BlackBerry to offer HD video recording, and all things considered, it performed pretty well. Overall video quality was good, and while audio was a bit brash at times, it was never unbearable. It’s certainly on par with many of the Android smartphones on the market. Should HTC take notes from Samsung’s naming structure?

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

It has been expressed a million times. Phones are coming out of the woodwork and carrier shelves are running out of space. Samsung, LG, Motorola, HTC and a handful of other manufacturers are pushing out phones like the world may end tomorrow. Android and the mobile realm are bursting at the seams.
HTC is easily one of the most active Android OEMs around. Every couple months, they release a new phone on another carrier – sometimes several on the same carrier within weeks of each…

Controls
——–
You can tap anything on screen that looks like a button to bring up a configuration dialog for that option. If an option is not available, it will not look like a button.
Additionally, after you have used an option, or you long-press said option, it will become highlighted. The highlighted option is configurable using the volume up and volume down buttons.
Tap the live view image to perform Auto Focus (if the lens is not set to Manual Focus). Tap-and-hold to move the zoom and focus area (red rectangle, availability depends on current focus mode)
The capture button works the same as the capture button on your camera, but it only does “deep” presses, not “half” presses. For example, in continuous or bulb shooting mode, tap-and-hold the capture button as long as you want to shoot.

Tesla Model S and Roadster play nice on video

Posted: 16 Aug 2011 06:00 PM PDT

Vroooooom…. well, more accurately, shhhhhhh. That’s a Tesla Model S and its sibling the Roadster (looking rather dashing in red, we might add) above, carving corners together as a family. What actual news do we have about these “premium electric vehicles?” None, we just thought this clip (after the break) of the two sleek EVs working their way around a closed desert track was pretty darned cool. The Model S and Roadster have posed for family portraits before, but this is the first time we’ve seen them play nice on video. You know the deal, head on after the break for all the battery-powered, four-wheel madness your little geek heart can handle.

[Thanks, nunomaia]

For those who haven’t played, it’s basically a Bond One Liner.

Should HTC take notes from Samsung’s naming structure?

MABEL running robot snags bipedal speed title, cue ‘Rocky’ theme (video)

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 06:01 PM PDT

MABEL the running robot has been training hard, grabbing the title of “fastest bipedal robot with knees.” Like any great sports star, it’s been plagued by many dream-crushing obstacles and injuries, but this time it’s done it: running at a speed of 6.8 miles per hour on a track. Jessy Grizzle, professor at the University of Michigan’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, attributes this bot’s success to its human-like weight distribution — a heavier torso and flexible legs with springs similar to tendons for movement “like a real runner.” This bipedal technology, which can mimic a human’s ability to run and climb over obstacles, may be used to help the disabled walk again, in rescue situations or as the basis of future vehicles that don’t require roads or wheels to drive. If MABEL doesn’t make the SWAT team this year, it can most certainly snag a spot as an extra in the next Transformers movie. Check out the PR and video of this modern day robo-Flo-Jo after the break.

Google’s Moto Mobility deal may have had Microsoft roots, comes with $2.5 billion break-up fee

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 06:01 PM PDT

Is Microsoft preparing to fill in Google’s old mobile boots? It could very well be, now that the search king has firmly committed to the hardware side of the mobile business. According to a report on GigaOM, MS was one of many potential suitors circling Motorola’s treasure trove of patents, effectively forcing El Goog to swoop in for the $12.5 billion kill. Moto’s portfolio of 17,000 patents and 7,500 patent applications would have significantly strengthened Redmond’s attack on the Android platform, but it appears the loss might actually benefit MS in other unintended ways. Despite the cheery, public well-wishing from handset makers, insider rumblings indicate a possible mass OEM defection to Windows Phone 7 could shortly be afoot, paving the way for a fierce, three-way mobile OS fight. For its part, Google doesn’t seem too worried about the competition, considering the deal’s hefty $2.5 billion break-up fee — a percentage three times that of the AT&T / T-Mobile merger penalty — a confident financial sign it intends to win this wireless race.

Obama Checks In: You Can Now Follow Our President On Foursquare

Posted: 15 Aug 2011 05:55 PM PDT

First Facebook, then Twitter and now Foursquare; Obama sure gets around (social platforms). As announced today on the White House blog, Obama will be checking in to the location-based service as he hits stops on his economic bus tour in the Midwest. Of course.

Users who want to follow Barack can check out the White House Foursquare page here, where they can now subscribe to White House Tips as well as check in to the White House when they visit as well as Presidential events. And Barack has already left his first “Tip” linking to a blog post about the tour’s first stop at Lower Hannah's Bend Park in Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Eh, someone should tell him that’s not exactly how they’re used.

One wonders how much of this social media outreach is the doing of newly brought on Obama campaign CTO (and former Threadless CTO) Harper Reed who is hep to these things, and how useful the location-based service will be in getting the word out to supporters. In any case it seems like you need to follow the President through his page to actually find him — searching for “Barack Obama” on the mobile app got me a guy in Salt Lake City Utah and a Barack Obama in London.

While probably the service’s most famous, Barack isn’t the only politician on Foursquare. Mayor Bloomberg famously checked into the Marriage Equalitocalypse earlier this summer and Mitt Romney and Cory Booker are also sharing their checkins with fans. *Insert joke about Obama automatically being the mayor of everything he visits here.*

Also: It seems like Foursquare has set up the White House Page to automatically follow people back, otherwise Obama would be fielding A LOT of friend requests. I personally can’t wait until he joins Instagram.

So, if you have a sprite request for me, I’m glad to take it. Wait, that sounds dirty. I’ll be glad to do it! No, that’s bad too………

Oh, you know what I mean.

Moto Droid 1 and WiFi on SS 5.4

Posted: 13 Aug 2011 06:00 PM PDT

First, let me say that I was originally on CM 5.0.8 for a long while, recently updated to CM 7.0.3 (with a .9 Chevy kernel), then just now changed to Simply Stunning with the Chevy 2.6.32 LV 1 Ghz and holy moly! My phone’s performance and speed shot WAY up when I combined SS with a Chevy kernel (compared to CM 5 w/ a Bekit? 1 Ghz kernel and CM with a Chevy .9 Ghz). Nearly everything works beautifully, so well done Chevy, sir!

But, when I changed to CM 7 and now even with SS, I have an issue with WiFi that I hope to resolve. My original post about it: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/cya…i-problem.html

To recap, when I toggle WiFi on and it connects to my home LAN, the CPU pins at max, things start becoming unresponsive with many ‘Wait or FC’ messages, then fairly quickly, the screen won’t respond at all, goes black and I have to reboot. Unfortunately, a reboot will just have WiFi try to re-establish, so I’ve been using the power button to enable airplane mode, then after booting, I toggle airplane off and when WiFi tries to kick back in, I quickly toggle it off and everything works fine again.

Any ideas where to start looking for the issue or how to resolve? I’ll probably enable logging, reboot and try WiFi again to see if anything shows in a logcat; at the moment I don’t have any further info.

Phone app won’t work

Posted: 13 Aug 2011 06:00 PM PDT

Hi all.

Chevy seemed to work beautifully at first and for however long.

Now, for some reason, sometimes the phone app won’t work.

I tap on a shortcut on the home screen and nothing happens.
Then I go to the phone app, click a contact, click dial and nothing happens.
Repeat and nothing happens.
Sometimes, I’ll receive a phone call and cannot answer it.

Reboot is the only solution and then all is well.

Haven’t had too much chance to troubleshoot, but I do know that last night I had the navigation app going when I had probs with the phone app.

Luv this ROM and I tried several others. None came even close, imo.

Business Calendar 1.1.6.1 by CyberAndroid

Posted: 13 Aug 2011 06:00 PM PDT

Business Calendar 1.1.6.1 by CyberAndroid

Overview: Business Calendar is a complete calendar application that is synchronising with your Google calendars!

Requirements: Android 2.0.1+

* smooth scroll- and zoomable multi-day view (1-14 days)
* graphical and textual presentation
* month, agenda, day and event view
* quickly fade in/out calendars using the favorite bar
* search function
* drag&drop functionality
* configurable widgets in different sizes for month, week, agenda and day view
* easy switching between timeline bars and event titles in month view
* intuitive new handling option: just move your finger over some days of interest in month view to open them in the multi-day view
* quick day overview when adding a new event
* many options for recurrent events (e.g. to add a recurrent event that takes place every other week on Tuesday and Thursday)
* option to link a contact to an event
* context-sensitive help system to optimize your work with Business Calendar

There also is a free ad-supported version of Business Calendar (called Business Calendar Free), we recommend to test the free version before buying the paid one.

Please do not move the application to the sd card if you want to use the widgets (general limitation of the Android operating system)!

The app depends on the reminders of the stock calendar application please make sure you have not disabled them if you want to get alarm messages for your events!

Please notice that the application will now work with the Motorola Xoom but is not optimized for the high screen resolution of that device. Therefore some views and widgets may look quite poor on the Motorola Xoom at the moment. We are going to optimize the application for the Motorola Xoom and other (future) high resolution devices with a future update!

What’s in this version:
- you can now individually select the calendars for each widget
- you can now adjust the font sizes of the widgets
- the photos of linked contacts and guests are now showing up in the event details view
- if the photo/name of a contact is tapped a popup window is showing up with some actions for that contact (e.g. call, write email, write SMS, open contact app)
- new menu items “Send Email” and “Send SMS” have been added in the event details view to send an email/SMS with details of the event

Leaked Ice Cream Sandwich UI Got You Down? Check Out MIUI’s Lockscreens! [Video]

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 05:42 PM PDT

If the recently leaked pics of Google’s next iteration of Android 2.4/4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich didn’t quite “wow” you the way you thought it would, I figured I’d ad a little sunshine to your day by showing you a UI that might. It’s called MIUI and recently the ROM has been updated to now allow for completely themeable lockscreens complete with moving parts and backgrounds. Exactly what some developers have been coming up with is nothing short of stunning and it’s a testament to the versatility of MIUI. Just take a look at this video and watch the beauty and splendor of MIUI’s theme engine. (Protip: Turn your speakers UP)

As seen towards the end of the video is h_zee13′s Colors theme which has a distinctly wonderful “Google feel” to it. Honestly, I have to admit, seeing those leaked images of Ice Cream Sandwich was a bit of a let down. But here’s some food for thought, if Ice Cream Sandwich brings with it an open and versatile themeing engine to stock Android just think of all the wonderful things the Android community can think up. And that friends, is the power of Android — its awesome developer community.

Zediva puts the brakes on its streaming service, soothes your fears with monkeys

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 05:42 PM PDT

Zediva fought the law and the law shut it down. The unique DVD rental service, sued by the MPAA and Hollywood studios for running afoul of licensing and distribution agreements, has temporarily closed shop. A statement on the outfit’s website optimistically refers to the court-ordered injunction as an “intermission,” pointing to a hopeful future resumption of operations, and guaranteeing customers a solution for unused credits. The company’s promised to fight back against Judge Walter’s decision, and is in the process of appealing the ruling that could see it facing a permanent service blackout. We hope for the sake of its “DVD-changing monkeys” that all parties involved can work this out. Make sure to head past the break for Zediva’s full explanation.

Audi’s Urban Concept heads to IAA Frankfurt, tickles our EV sensibilities

Posted: 11 Aug 2011 05:41 PM PDT

The Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) Frankfurt looms on the horizon, meaning its time for another round of bodacious concept cars we want, but sadly can never have. We’ve already seen BMW’s entry and now it’s Audi’s turn to show off an electric city-dweller. Dubbed the “Urban Concept,” this latest e-tron is made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and wields a door contraption that’ll put Lambos to shame — assuming it ever makes it to market. And it just might, seeing as our friends over at Autoblog caught it slumming around Berlin in prototype garb. We’ll hear more from Ingolstadt come September, but in the meantime more sketches and snaps of the development mule await you at the source links below.

Infographic: Social Media Policies in the Workplace

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:07 PM PDT

This is an interesting infographic on corporate social media policies. It’s a pretty interesting graphic but, as with most social media policy conversations it only focuses on either brand protection, promoting the brand, or employee freedom. The problem is that there’s another huge opportunity in between that the Infographic touches on but doesn’t go into enough detail about…

Productivity!

The ability to network with peers, professionals, vendors and clients provides an opportunity for corporations to quickly provide and extract information. Rather than sitting on the phone or trying to read through documentation and help files, your employees can get online and connect with other users, vendors or consultants to get the information they need to get the job done.

As well, this can be used for recruitment, competitive research, surveys, customer relations… there’s so many advantages to the social business! And with 70.7% of companies blocking social media sites, there’s an incredible opportunity for your company to leapfrog them by taking advantage of the medium.

The other factor to note here… with smartphones in double-digit growth, companies are fooling themselves by thinking they’re blocking social media sites. This reminds me of the good ‘ol days of the Internet, where only a couple employees in the most key positions had access to the Internet and the rest of us had to quietly work on a crappy Intranet. We just gave it all up and played Solitaire instead.

Why in the world would you block your employees from connecting with other professionals? If your employees are on Facebook and being unproductive, that’s not a Facebook or security issue, that’s a performance issue… fire them! Good leaders remove roadblocks, not add them.

A quote from the Infographic:

Today, companies are implementing social media policies of all shapes and sizes – and it’s no wonder why: every month we hear of another PR disaster because of a single tweet gone awry. This has led many companies to ban the use of social media completely while employees are at work. But other companies are taking the opposite approach, believing that a generation raised on technology is more productive when allowed to use it at their own discretion.

Brandon Watson has a mystery Windows Phone with an "amazing" screen

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

This is just one of those tease posts since we don’t have much to go on, but earlier today, Microsoft’s Brandon Watson was able to play with some new Windows Phone. His impression was quite enthusiastic, to say the least, especially in regards to the screen. The worse part about his job is of course he can’t share details with us, just yet:

“You know what I hate? Holding a phone I want, but cannot buy and cannot talk about. The worst part about not being able to talk about this #windowsphone is I can’t talk about how amazing the screen is. Holy mamma jamma”

Our first guess would be the rumored Samsung Galaxy SII device, shown off by Microsoft a few weeks ago and seen above. That phone, if the specs remain the same, will sport a 4.3″ Super AMOLED Plus screen aka the latest screen tech from Sammy. We’ve actually played with one of those phones back in Barcelona and indeed, it’s very impressive. Then again, it may be something else. Twitter’r @ShakeWhyBake asked “4.3 inch OLED? at least give us the size!!!…” to which Watson responded “@ShakeWhyBake If size were all that mattered, then we wouldn’t be having this conversation. “

We’re still leaning towards the Super AMOLED Plus story here, but Professeur Thibault believes it may be a new screen resolution, speculating on his blog that it’s a Super AMOLED HD (1280×720). While that would certainly be awesome, we’ve heard Microsoft specifically state that 800×480 is all there will be for sometime and we’re inclined to believe them. But hey, we like a little mystery too.

AT&T TouchPad 4G runs through FCC with HSPA speeds [update: Opal, TouchPad Go?]

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

Looking for a cellular-enabled HP TouchPad but don’t know where to look? We’re going to suggest the FCC’s certification labs, because it seems that they got enough hands-on time with the more-mobile-than-yours webOS tablet to give it the a-okay stamp of not brain boiling. There’s not much more to glean from the certification, except to say that the AT&T TouchPad 4G is on its way, and is now closer than ever.

UPDATE: The chaps over at webOSroundup dug into the FCC documents and noticed some interesting things. Firstly the FCC application lists the model as “Opal,” which we’ve seen leaked in the past as a 7-inch webOS tablet. Additionally, the set of four labels in the documents give the name of TouchPad Go, a brand name we saw HP file for back in mid-June. These same labels list familiar specs: 32GB of storage and a 1.5GHz processor.

There are two conclusions we can draw from this: 1) This FCC filing was for an unannounced 7-inch webOS tablet named the TouchPad Go, or 2) the TouchPad Go is an internal or marketing name for the cellular TouchPad, and the Opal name was not correct when leaked. We’re not entirely sure, and looking at the drawings provided in the filing, we’re really conflicted. It could be that they’re generalized, or components were moved around for the cellular TouchPad, or it could be that this really is a smaller TouchPad. It’s hard to say.

And HTC’s ‘major news announcement’ is … Beats Audio?

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

The rumors are running rampant as to what Thursday’s "major news announcement" from HTC CEO Peter Chou will be.

Bootloader unlocking? No.
Honeycomb tablets? No.
When your phone will get Gingerbread? No.

Seriously, folks. You don’t hype a "major news announcement" for that stuff. You send a press release.

That said, All ThingsD is reporting that the big news is a $300 million collaboration with Beats Audio. As in Beats by Dre, and the same Beats Audio you’ll find in a smattering of HP products — including the HP TouchPad. The collaboration will be exclusive to HTC smartphones.

Now, that’s nothing to turn your nose up at — there’s definitely a market for a proper Android MP3 player. (So long as it’s priced right.) But with all the patent nonsense floating around and the world still waiting for its first Honeycomb tablet from HTC, the timing for a "major news announcement" sure came at an interesting juncture.

Anyhoo, whether or not the cat’s out of the bag, be sure to join us for the liveblog Thursday morning.

GameFly to launch ‘Unlimited PC Play’ download service, offer less incentive to leave the house

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

GameFly hasn’t wasted any time jumping into the digital download waters after acquiring IGN’s Direct2Drive platform a little over two months ago. Set to launch September 8th in beta form, its new “Unlimited PC Play” service will offer subscribers access to 100-plus downloadable PC and Mac titles, with hundreds more expected in time for the official end of year launch. Fans of the video game rental outfit’s snail mail subscription service don’t have to worry about a shift to digital only, as the company has no plans to abandon its “unique combination of console and digital PC game offerings.” Interested in getting an early peek at the new platform? If you live in the Los Angeles area, you can look forward to a planned beta launch party next month, where access codes for the new, invite-only service will be distributed. The rest of you PC gaming warriors will just have to settle for a sign-up page at the source.

Can’t wait to play Minecraft on Android? There is always MineBuilder.

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 06:06 PM PDT

We have been checking out a game called MineBuilder for awhile now which is essentially a Minecraft-style game that is actually very similar to actual Minecraft. This game has been out for about 2 months and through quite a few updates MineBuilder has come a long way from it’s inception.

Video: Free-Moving Kinect Used To Map Room And Objects In Detailed 3D

Posted: 10 Aug 2011 05:56 PM PDT

We’ve seen hacks for the Kinect from the very start, and even some that suggested one like this might be possible: a Kinect being moved around like a camera, recording the depth of everything it sees and building up a full-3D map of the room and every object in it. They call it KinectFusion, and it’s really quite fascinating to watch.

The position of the camera is constantly tracked by monitoring the depth of known objects in its view, and with that information known, the 3D data recorded can be given absolute measurements, producing a static map of the room. And it all happens in real time. Watch just the first demonstration and you can see the system “painting” a 3D model of the room as quickly as the researcher can move the Kinect around.

It tolerates change, as well: move objects in the scene and it’ll update the model. It “knows” whether an object is moving or the camera itself is. And by combining this new model with the normal capabilities of the Kinect, the room or object can be interacted with, as they demonstrate in the video by “throwing” gobs of little paintballs at things in real time, and picking up a real-life teapot that is also being mapped in 3D. Absolutely extraordinary that this is being done with an off-the-shelf device, a common PC, and some clever programming.

Among the applications for this suggested by the Microsoft Research team: “extending multi-touch interactions to arbitrary surfaces; advanced features for augmented reality; real-time physics simulations of the dynamic model; novel methods for segmentation and tracking of scanned objects” — and I’m sure you can think of a few yourself. Turning the Kinect into a user-controlled tool instead of a passive user-monitoring tool opens up a huge amount of possibilities, as other hacks have demonstrated as well.

The project was demonstrated at SIGGRAPH yesterday, but this video really shows it off much better. Hopefully we’ll see a code release soon and people can play around with this amazing tool.

Microsoft’s designing women want to dress you up in wearable tech love (video)

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:10 PM PDT

Microsoft’s no slouch when it comes to market expansion, with personal computing, mobile and even gaming under its Redmond wing — but fashion? Well, it’s time for pigs to fly because two of MS’ very own took home Best Concept and Best in Show for their Printing Dress creation at the 15th Annual International Symposium on Wearable Computers. The dress, created by MS Research’s Asta Roseway and the Xbox division’s Sheridan Martin Small, incorporates a laptop, projector, four circuit boards and laser-cut, typewriter-shaped buttons into a black and white rice paper design. Wondering what all the gadgetry is for? Stressing the need for accountability in our age of anonymous, digital communication, the duo’s winning entry aims to have us all wearing what we tweet — literally, as messages typed via the bodice-sewn keys display on the gown’s lower half. It might seem a far-fetched goal now, but these “eRenaissance women” hope to lure tech back from the “cold, unyielding” brink and into the warmth of a “human age.” Jump past the break for a video peek at this ethical couture.

Perceptive Pixel shows world’s largest projected capacitive display at SIGGRAPH, we go hands-on (video)

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:10 PM PDT

Perceptive Pixel wasn’t kidding around when it launched the planet’s biggest projected capacitive display here at SIGGRAPH — all 82 inches of it were here on display, and naturally, we stopped by to give it a look. While 82-inch panels aren’t anything new, this one’s particularly special. You see, the company actually procures the panels from Samsung, and then it rips the guts out while bonding its own network of sensors directly to it; most large-screen touch devices simply pop a touch layer on top of whatever TV shows up in the labs, but this integrated approach takes sensitivity to a whole ‘nother level. For those unfamiliar with the term ‘projected capacitive,’ we’re surmising that it’s actually far less foreign than you think — it’s a technology used in a handful of smartphones, from Samsung’s Moment to Apple’s iPhone. 3M was also showing off a PC tech preview back at CES, and after using it here on the show floor, there’s no question that it’s the future for larger-screen devices. To quote CEO Jeff Han: “once consumers get a taste of this on the mobile front, they start demanding it elsewhere.”

Netflix Watch Instantly streaming now works on ChromeOS, when it’s working

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:10 PM PDT

It didn’t make launch as was originally promised, but today the Netflix Twitter account officially announced streaming access is operational on Chromebooks (when it’s not suffering an outage, like it was last night during Amazon’s cloud server troubles). The Netflix ChromeOS plugin jumping to 1.0.2 a few days ago was a good indication it was on the way, but now you can take your CR-48s, Series 5s and the like straight to the Chrome Web Store and get outfitted for some Watch Instantly streaming. Unfortunately, despite rumors that it’s on the way in the next year or so, there’s no change for other environments outside of Silverlight-compatible OS X and Windows, but Linux users can always dream, right?

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Big box earbuds put to a blind ‘taste’ test in the Engadget Labs

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 06:10 PM PDT

Hello, and welcome to yet another installment of Engadget Laboratories. This time around we’re taking a pseudo scientific look at sub-$100 earbuds. We’ve all been caught out, headphoneless, and desperate to put some tunes in our ears. So, the question is, what exactly do you get for your money when you stumble into a Best Buy and pick up whatever happens to be hanging on the shelves? Clearly you’re trading convenience for selection when you shuffle into a big box shop for your audio needs, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should just grab the cheapest thing hanging by the register, or the most expensive for that matter. We randomly selected four sets of phones, at four different price points, and put it to a group of average Joes and Janes to see if they could actually tell the difference between a $100 pair of buds and a $10 pair (while blindfolded and trapped inside a booth).

The person who heard a noise and wanted to become a monk joke!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There was a little boy who lived in a far away land. Close to the boy's home, there was a tall mountain, always covered in snow at the top. Also at the top of the mountain, there was an ancient monastery where ancient monks lived.

Sometimes, the little boy, as he was riding his tricycle around his yard, would look up at the monastery on the tall mountain and wonder what it was like up there.

One day, when the wind was blowing down off the mountain, the air turned quite cold and the little boy could hear a very strange noise on the wind. It was coming from the monastery! He could not figure out what could possibly be making such a strange noise and he was curious.

So, the little boy made a peanut butter sandwich, hopped on his tricycle and started his ride up to the monastery. It took him hours and hours, but he finally made it to the top. He bravely pounded on the massive door to the monastery and the head monk opened the door.

"Hello, Mr. Monk, sir. Down at my home in the valley below, I heard a very strange noise coming from your monastery. Could you tell me what it is?"

"I'm sorry," replied the head monk, "I can't tell you. You aren't a monk."

Sadly, the little boy got back on his tricycle and rode all the way home, in a very foul and frustrated mood. He really did want to know what was making that noise.

The wind did not blow down off the mountain again until a couple years later. The boy was a bit bigger and stronger now and now rode around town on his bicycle.

As luck would have it, he was out riding when the wind blew down off the mountain, the air turned quite cold, and he heard a very strange noise on the wind. It was coming from the monastery! He could not figure out what could possibly be making such a strange noise and he was curious.

So, the bigger boy made a ham and cheese sandwich, hopped on his bicycle and started his ride up to the monastery. It took him hours, but he finally made it to the top. He pounded on the massive door to the monastery and the head monk opened the door.

"Hey, Mr. Monk. Down at my home in the valley below, I heard a very strange noise coming from your monastery. Could you tell me what it is?"

"I'm sorry," replied the head monk, "I can't tell you. You aren't a monk."

Sadly, the big boy got back on his bicycle and rode all the way home, in a very foul and frustrated mood. He really did want to know what was making that noise.

The wind did not blow down off the mountain again until a couple years later. The boy had grown into a strapping youth now and rode around town on his motorcycle.

As luck would have it, he was out riding when the wind blew down off the mountain, the air turned quite cold, and he heard a very strange noise on the wind. It was coming from the monastery! He could not figure out what could possibly be making such a strange noise and he was curious.

So, the strapping youth grabbed a slice of pizza, hopped on his motorcycle and started his ride up to the monastery. It took him 30 minutes, but he finally made it to the top. He pounded on the massive door to the monastery and the head monk opened the door.

"Yo, Mr. Monk, dude. Down at my home in the valley below, I heard a very strange noise coming from your monastery. Could you tell me what it is?"

"I'm sorry," replied the head monk, "I can't tell you. You aren't a monk."

Sadly, the strapping youth got back on his motorcycle and rode all the way home, in a very foul and frustrated mood. He really did want to know what was making that noise.

The wind did not blow down off the mountain again until a couple years later. The boy was now a young man and often rode around in his new convertible sportscar.

As luck would have it, he was out riding when the wind blew down off the mountain, the air turned quite cold, and he heard a very strange noise on the wind. It was coming from the monastery! He could not figure out what could possibly be making such a strange noise and he was curious.

So, the young man bought a burger at a fast food place, got in his convertible sportscar, and started his ride up to the monastery. It took him 20 minutes, but he finally made it to the top. He pounded on the massive door to the monastery and the head monk opened the door.

"Mr. Monk. Down at my home in the valley below, I heard a very strange noise coming from your monastery. Could you tell me what it is?"

"I'm sorry," replied the head monk, "I can't tell you. You aren't a monk."

Sadly, the young man got back in his convertible sportscar and rode all the way home, in a very foul and frustrated mood. He really did want to know what was making that noise.

That night, he thought and thought about the very strange noise and how he just had to know what caused it. So, he resolved to do something about it the next day.

The next day, he got in his convertible sportscar and raced up the mountain, slammed on his brakes, and skidded to a stop right in front of the massive door to the monastery.

He honked the horn of his convertible sportscar until the head monk finally opened the door.

"Alright, Mr. Monk, I want to know what is making that very strange noise coming from you monastery!"

"I'm sorry," replied the head monk, "I can't tell you. You aren't a monk."

"Well, then can I become a monk?"

"Why certainly! It is quite easy. You must travel the earth and count the number of blades of grass in every field and the number of grains of sand on every beach. When you return with your answer, then you shall be a monk."

So the young man left the monastery and travelled the earth. For years and years he counted the blades of grass and grains of sand, until one day he had finally finished. He made his way slowly back to the monastery and found the head monk.

"Oh, Mr. Monk, I have travelled the earth these past years, counting the blades of grass and grains of sand. I finally know that there are 123,123,123,123,123 blades of grass in the fields and 123,123,123,123,123 grains of sand on the beaches and I would like to become a monk."

So the man became a monk. At last, he would now be able to find out the source of that very strange noise coming from the monastery.

"Mr. Monk, what is the noise coming from the monastery?" asked the new monk.

The head monk replied, "The source is too complicated to describe in words. I am afraid that you must see it for yourself to truly understand it. This key will show you the answer you seek."

"Take this key to the deepest, darkest corner of the coldest, dampest room in the dirtiest, filthiest cavern under the monastery. There you will find a long corridor. At the end of the corridor is a door and through the door is the thing that makes the noise."

Well, of course the new monk went immediately to the deepest, darkest corner of the coldest, dampest room in the dirtiest, filthiest cavern under the monastery and there he did indeed find the long corridor. He walked down the corridor until he could see the door at the end.

Unfortunately, there were three magical fires that never go out blocking the man from the door. He decided to jump the fires to reach the door. The man made sure the key was secure in his hand, took a running charge at the first fire and leapt!

Over the first fire he flew, but he dropped the key. The man leapt back over the fire, ran all the way back down the long corridor, out of the deepest, darkest corner of the coldest, dampest room in the dirtiest, filthiest cavern under the monastery and back to the head monk.

"Oh, Mr. Monk! I am so sorry! I went to the deepest, darkest corner of the coldest, dampest room in the dirtiest, filthiest cavern under the monastery, down the long corridor to the door, but there were magical fires and I dropped the key in the first one as I leapt over it."

"Do not worry, for there is another key and you must overcome tests on your way to enlightenment. The second key, however is far, far away in Canada."

The new monk left the monastery and travelled to Canada. It took many years because he had no money, being a monk and all.

Eventually, he arrived in Canada and managed to track down the key to the door. The monk then had to make the return journey equally as painstakingly, but finally he arrived back at the monastery. Down into the deepest, darkest corner of the coldest, dampest room in the dirtiest, filthiest cavern under the monastery he went, until he found the long corridor.

The three magical fires were in front of him as he took a running start.

Over the first fire went the monk, key still in hand!

Over the second fire went the monk, key still- RATS!
He had dropped the key in the second fire. The monk leapt back over the second fire, back over the first fire, back down the long corridor he walked and out of the deepest, darkest corner of the coldest, dampest room in the dirtiest, filthiest cavern under the monastery. The monk went back to the head monk.

"Oh, Mr. Monk! I am so sorry! I went to the deepest, darkest corner of the coldest, dampest room in the dirtiest, filthiest cavern under the monastery, down the long corridor to the door, but there were magical fires and I dropped the key in the second one as I leapt over it."

"Do not worry, for there is one more key and we must all overcome tests on our way to enlightenment. The third key, however is far, far away in Australia."

The monk left the monastery and travelled to Australia. It took many years because he had no money being a monk and all.

Eventually he arrived in Australia and managed to track down the key to the door. The monk then had to make the return journey equally as painstakingly, but finally he arrived back at the monastery. By this time, he was quite an old monk.

Down into the deepest, darkest corner of the coldest, dampest room in the dirtiest, filthiest cavern under the monastery he went, until he found the long corridor. The three magical fires were in front of him as he took a running start.

Over the first fire went the quite old monk, key still in hand!

Over the second fire went the quite old monk, key still in hand!

Over the THIRD fire went the quite old monk, key still in hand!

He had made it! He'd made the jumps and here he was standing outside the door with the answer to his question. Finally, finally, after so many, many, many years of wanting to know what was making the strange noise, he would know. The answer lay through the door in front of him and he could at last be at peace with himself.

Slowly, the quite old monk slid the key into the lock. Turning the key a slight 'click' was to be heard as the lock moved back allowing the quite old monk to open the door. He pushed the door open and stepped inside.

Shock and amazement came over him as he finally realized the answer to his question!

"Do you want me to tell you what it was?"

"I'm sorry, I can't tell you. You aren't a monk."
