Zecotek Photonics Inc., a developer of leading-edge photonics technologies for industrial, healthcare and scientific markets, announced that the U.S. Patent office has granted U.S. Patent No. 9,055,288 to Zecotek for technology related to the Company's switchable 3D/2D optical imaging system. This patent adds to the global portfolio of patents, including U.S. patent number 7,944,465 covering Zecotek's glasses-free 3D auto-stereoscopic display system.

"This U.S. patent marks another important step in our continued efforts to provide the best-in-class glasses-free 3D displays and monitors," said Dr. A.F. Zerrouk, Chairman, President, and CEO of Zecotek Photonics Inc. "The patent covers the significant improvements to our switchable 3D/2D display technology which meet the practical needs of OEM's and end users. Our 3D display technology allows for switching between 3D and 2D modes without loss of resolution, and displaying 3D and 2D content simultaneously. The patent also covers technology which significantly broadens the capabilities of specialized 3D display applications such as fundamental research and medical imaging. We are working closely with OEM's within well-defined markets and will continue to maintain an aggressive IP development program in parallel with our efforts to meet market requirements."

The 3D/2D switchable optical imaging system further improves the core capabilities of the 3D display technology by introducing a software-selectable full-resolution 2D mode with viewing angles and dynamic range/colour depth on par with conventional 2D displays. The patent also covers technology for both 3D and 2D modes, dynamic adjustment of viewing angle, number and width of viewing zones as well as the functionality to dynamically control the positioning of different viewing zones.

Patents have been granted to Zecotek for its 3D display system in the United States, China, Europe, Eurasia, Russia and Australia. Other patents have been filed and are pending in Japan, Korea and India.

About Zecotek's 3D Display System
Zecotek's 3D Display System is based on the auto-stereoscopic principle, but with substantial innovative and patented improvements and represents a new and unique generation of 3D displays. It has the capability of simultaneously presenting 3D and 2D images on the same screen, and for separate views at different viewing angles. Zecotek's true, auto-stereoscopic 3D2D display system requires no eyewear and has an effective viewing angle of 40 degrees with 90 concurrent perspectives allowing for multiple views at the same time. Another unique feature of the Zecotek system is constant motion parallax within the viewing angle. Motion parallax eliminates the sense of imbalance and dizziness during normal observation which can occur with polarized and shutter glasses used with other commercial systems. Furthermore Zecotek's 3D display features the preservation of the base resolution in every perspective view irrespective of the number of such views. This is not true for any other glasses-free displays where the base resolution is divided by the number of views. Zecotek's white paper on 3D display technology is available on www.zecotek.com.

MasterImage 3D, a worldwide leader in 3D display technologies for digital cinema, successfully invalidated RealD's Chinese utility model patent by filing an appeal before the Chinese Patent Re-examination Board (PRB). The Chinese PRB agreed with MasterImage 3D's claim that RealD's patent lacked inventiveness and failed to meet the requirements for patent protection. As a result, MasterImage 3D will continue to sell its high-brightness HORIZON3D product line in China.

In October 2014, MasterImage 3D appealed the grant of RealD's utility model patent CN 203433207U for 3D beam-splitting, polarization technologies. In its appeal, MasterImage 3D documented the lack of novelty and inventiveness of RealD's patent being brandished by RealD in an effort to block other 3D technologies from the Chinese market. On May 7, 2015, the Chinese PRB declared that RealD's Chinese patent is invalid as a whole.

It is the second victory of MasterImage 3D after successfully invalidating RealD's utility model patent in Russia. On March 27, 2015, the Russian Patent Office also sided with MasterImage 3D and invalidated RealD's utility model patent in Russia.

With this victory in the Chinese PRB, RealD's effort to keep the HORIZON3D out of a competitive Chinese marketplace has been denied. MasterImage 3D will continue to sell its HORIZON3D high-brightness, triple-beam product line in China and throughout the rest of the world.

"Chinese moviegoers demonstrate an impressive enthusiasm for blockbuster, immersive 3D cinema," said Younghoon Lee, Chairman and CEO of MasterImage 3D. "Our HORIZON3D system allows the Chinese market to show the world's best 3D movies in the most visually stunning, premium quality 3D. This is a commitment that MasterImage 3D cherishes and plans to continue for years to come."

Virtalis, one of the worlds leading Virtual Reality companies, is now shipping the first new version of its Visionary Render software since it was launched last year. Visionary Render software allows users to access and experience a real-time, interactive and immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environment created from huge 3D datasets. Users can work alone, in small groups, or collaborate with distant colleagues in a common virtual environment to perform detailed design reviews, rehearse in-depth training tasks, validate maintenance procedures or verify assembly and manufacturing processes.

Technical Director, Andrew Connell, said: "I am exceptionally proud of what the Virtalis R&D Team have managed to pack into Version 1.1. From floating licences to capped sectioning, Version 1.1 represents an enormous advance in 3D rendering technology. In further developing our ground-breaking VR software, Virtalis is grateful to its beta testers: Raytheon, AMRC, Vestas, Rolls-Royce and BAE."

Headline Advances:

Rendering

New controls for Scene Management: Automatic Level of Detail (LOD) enables efficient strategies for managing very large models. Overlapped Culling allows rendering to be shared across multiple CPUs. Advanced Instance Rendering Controls further offloads rendering tasks to the Graphics Card, allowing CPU and GPU to operate in parallel.

Deferred Render: Gives more control over the appearance of the data, enabling many light effects, such as ambient occlusion, light from many light sources and shader post processing.

Infinite Streaming Terrain: Support for terabyte terrain databases allows models to be put in geo-specific locations to give them accurate context.

Logarithmic Z Support: Z Fighting is virtually eliminated when objects in the scene conflict.

Data

Texture mapping and model optimisation tools: These allow greater control over the appearance of CAD data once it has been imported into Visionary Render, such as the mapping of textures and generation of normals. Users can improve rendering performance and reduce memory footprint by optimising a single model, or the whole scene, with a couple of mouse clicks.

Importers: Many new and updated importers, including FBX for better integration with Revit, Inventor, and other AutoDesk products.

Animation

Visual representation of Animations: Allows the animation path to be edited visually using 3D handles and lines. Users can see exactly where their animation paths will take their objects and can edit these, both on the desktop and immersively.

Immersion

Integration of Oculus DK2 and zSpace, bringing Visionary Render into ActiveDesk.

New laser manipulation mode, which allows immersed users to both remotely manipulate distant objects and to interact with the 2D GUI.

Dynamic Sections

Capped sections: We received many requests for this feature, as it helps users to render cap geometry when enclosed geometry is sectioned. It even fills in the gaps of a section, which makes inspection of cross-sections much clearer to understand.

General Enhancements

Dozens of refinements made to the functionality of the User Interface

Memory usage optimisations for very large scenes

Significant application performance and stability improvements

Improvements to scripting with new maths and vector libraries

New floating licensing system

Of course, you do have to give up the 1:1 scale provided by Virtalis flagship products but also downsized is the price. Starting at $33,000, this device suddenly makes Virtual Reality far more approachable for engineers and designers."

"Visionary Render is a system that can cope with the most complex data and render it in 3D stereo. By adding networking for interactive, multi-disciplinary design reviews it enhances the training experience." explained Andrew Connell, technical director at Virtalis. "Additionally, zSpace functionality further extends Visionary Render's practical usability, by making it as applicable for the desktop as it is for the VR suite."

Paul Ewing, Virtalis' Vice President North American Operations, explained: "Virtalis is a PTC PartnerAdvantage Gold Partner. Visionary Render software is being offered to PTC users worldwide as part of our worldwide referral agreement. PTC Creo users are able to view their CAD models in 3D thanks to our VR Extension for PTC Creo View."

Studios.

Jeunet's latest work 'The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet,' starring Helena Bonham Carter, Judy Davis, and Kyle Catlett, was produced in 3D and shot at various locations in Canada and Washington D.C. The film has been released in Europe and the Weinstein Company has acquired North American theatrical release rights.

"Jean-Pierre Jeunet has thrilled us with movies including 'Amlie,' 'The City of Lost Children,' 'Delicatessen,' 'A Very Long Engagement,' and countless others," said Society Awards Chairman Buzz Hays of the True Image Company. "With 'T.S. Spivet,' he has graced us with an extraordinary work of 3D artistry," Hays added.

The Harold Lloyd Award is annually presented to a filmmaker whose body of work and specific achievements in 3D filmmaking have advanced the motion picture art form.

"Harold Lloyd was a keen observer and was deeply influenced by the French filmmakers of his era," stated Suzanne Lloyd, Chairman of Harold Lloyd Entertainment. "As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Harold first stepping in front of the camera, I know he would be thrilled that this award, bearing his name, be presented to an artist of Mr. Jeunet's passion and achievement," added Lloyd.

Previous honorees of the Harold Lloyd Award have included James Cameron ('Avatar'), Martin Scorsese ('Hugo'), Ang Lee ('Life of Pi'), and last year Jeffrey Katzenberg (DreamWorks Animation).

"This is the first time the Lloyd Award is being presented to a director who works primarily outside of the United States," commented Society President Jim Chabin. "We are a global organization of creative professionals, from Paris to Beijing, and this is a wonderful opportunity to be able to acknowledge the artists whose work is done outside of Hollywood," he added.

The Society's Creative Arts Awards annually honor "extraordinary achievement" in the 3D and advanced imaging arts including movies, television, and other entertainment media.

Jean-Pierre Jeunet's work has been nominated for multiple Academy Awards, BAFTA Awards, Cannes Film Festival honors, and Csar Awards in France. Born in Roanne, Loire, France, he bought his first camera at the age of 17 and made short films while studying animation at Cinmation Studios. He lives in Paris and serves as director, screenwriter, and producer of many of his works.

Harold Lloyd starred in, directed, and produced more than 200 movies throughout his life. Along with Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, Lloyd founded Hollywood's comedic genre. In 1923 Harold Lloyd sat for an interview with the Los Angeles Times. The conversation was reported in the Times' October 21st edition, before the advent of sound and "talkies." Harold spoke at length about his fascination with 3D, "If the characters could only be made to stand out as they do in stereopticon (3D) pictures, and still retain the action of motion pictures today, I think the ultimate would be reached by cinema." A passionate advocate for 3D, Harold formed Hollywood's first 3D Society in 1950 with actor friends Edgar Bergen and Sterling Holloway (voice of Disney's 'Winnie the Pooh'). Harold served as its first President.

Magnetic 3D, a leader in autostereoscopic, "glasses-free 3D" solutions, announced the official launch of its Wildfire3D display line, which includes embedded hardware that automatically converts stereo 3D (side-by-side) content into glasses-free 3D in real-time.

"Content creators accustomed to using 3D glasses can now harness the power of our Wildfire3D displays and see their work in real-time without having to change workflow, learn new tools, install any special plug-ins, and of course, most importantly, do so without having to wear 3D glasses," said Tom Zerega, the Company's CEO and Founder. "Equally exciting is the opportunity for developers across a wide variety of industries to become engaged with glasses-free 3D for the first time, since Wildfire3D accepts a stereoscopic output from virtually any 3D-enabled application - from visualization and gaming to live video - in the popular format."

Wildfire3D represents the cutting-edge of multi-view autostereoscopic technology available on the market today. This innovative solution contains a circuit board that, when activated, automatically converts side-by-side stereo 3D content into Magnetic 3D's proprietary multi-view glasses-free 3D format, called E3D. The technology not only simplifies multi-view workflow but also opens up the glasses-free 3D delivery pipeline to all applications that can output in the side-by-side format, enabling a massive library of existing stereoscopic 3D content to be seen without glasses for the very first time.

"The official launch of Wildfire3D marks a major milestone", said Michael Dorin, COO of Magnetic 3D, "I've had the pleasure of demonstrating this technology in beta to select clients and partners over the last 12 months and the reactions were priceless. Wildfire3D literally takes the glasses out of the equation for virtually any 3D software, content, or application. In addition, the technology provides a nearly seamless viewing experience from anywhere in the room and it's great for watching 3D movies."

The launch represents the culmination of a company-wide effort to offer 3D solutions to a broader range of industries that extend beyond digital signage. Any industry that uses 3D can now take full advantage of glasses-free 3D. The technology was recently featured by the New York Stereoscopic Association at the Holocenter on Governor's Island in New York. Magnetic 3D has already provided Wildfire3D displays for military, medical, pro-AV, broadcast, simulcast and entertainment applications.

To celebrate the launch of Wildfire3D, the company offered the first 25 units off the production line at a special introductory price to its valued clients and authorized dealers through a limited email marketing campaign. In connection with the public announcement of the launch, Magnetic 3D is extending that same offer to end customers, systems integrators, distributors, and other affiliates, and is encouraging them to secure displays while supplies last.

"We look forward to providing our glasses-free 3D technology to several new verticals through the use of Wildfire3D," said Tom Zerega, "Adding value to the 3D production chain and seeing the adoption of our technology across new applications is our main goal, but we are mostly excited that users of Wildfire3D will finally be able to ditch those 3D glasses."

WolfVision Visualizer systems have often been used worldwide to assist with the training of surgeons. Surgical training by nature, often involves demonstrating procedures containing intricate movements and small details which need to be shown to large audiences. For demanding situations such as these, WolfVision has developed its 3D Visualizer system. The unique VZ-C3D stereoscopic System from WolfVision allows interactive workshops to be held that enable materials and motion to be vividly and accurately displayed in onscreen in 3D - in this example, for the audience, it is just like standing in front of the operating table.

The new opportunity to display 3-dimensional presentation material has been used by PD Dr. med. Christian Butter, head of the Cardiology Department at the Brandenburg
Heart Center, in Berlin. In a three-part training series on interventional treatment of structural heart disease he invited heart specialists from all over Germany to Berlin, in order to present the latest research findings in this area. In order to demonstrate complex types of treatment, he used the VZ-C3D Visualizer System. "With the WolfVision 3D system we could illustrate the complex operations with total realism. Even tiny details could be made easily accessible to a large audience." Presenters and participants were very impressed as Dr. Katharina Wassilew, Director of Cardiac Pathology at the Heart Center in Berlin demonstrated operational procedures on heart
valves 'live' using the 3D Visualizer. "The stereoscopic depth was amazing. One sees here that 3D cannot be dismissed as a gimmick, and it is really fantastic for this purpose", said Dr. Butter.

Thanks to the perfect 3D images, and the improved depth perception, procedures for different types of heart disease could be impressively demonstrated and easily explained live to the audience. Due to the special WolfVision light system, hearts and their cavities were perfectly illuminated and displayed without shadows, and the accurate color reproduction revealed the finest nuances of the variations in the tissue. Dipl. Ing. Detlef Jarke, information technology expert at the Immanuel Diakonie, Berlin added enthusiastically: "It is a great technique and ideally suited to this application."

The California Science Center invites audiences to an exploration of a paradise unlike any other, with the breathtaking IMAX film, "Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" narrated by Jeff Corwin.

"Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" brings to the giant screen these remarkable volcanic islands, home to some of nature's most incredible living creatures. Located close to the equator in the Pacific Ocean, at the confluence of several nutrient-rich currents, the Galapagos archipelago has developed over millions of years in relative isolation. The result is a living museum of nature, with an abundance of species of plants and unique animals that have adapted to thrive in this challenging environment. Giant half-ton long-necked tortoises lumber among dancing blue-footed boobies and flightless cormorants. Small penguins living thousands of miles from their natural habitats share the seas with unique marine iguanas that spit sea-salt. This is an incredible story of discovery, of survival against the odds, and of nature's ingenuity.

"I was thrilled to provide the narration for this amazing project," said Corwin, wildlife conservationist and Emmy award-winning TV host. "When I saw the film for the first time, it literally took my breath away. Despite traveling the world for 20 years hosting and creating documentaries, I was thoroughly impressed with this incredible journey."

After viewing the film, Science Center visitors are encouraged to visit the "Ecosystems" exhibition, where concepts from the film like adaptation are illustrated through a blend of live plants, animals, and hands-on exhibits in 11 immersive environments, or zones. "Ecosystems" occupies 45,000 square feet and contains more than 250 species of plants and animals. Guests will find out why isolation breeds change and visit a simulated tropical island research station in the "Island Zone," where they will learn about evolution by studying some of the unique animals that make these isolated habitats their homes. In the "Extreme Zone," guests explore the desert, rocky shores, and more to discover how environmental factors test the limits of plants and animalsand how they have adapted to flourish, just like the animals featured in "Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland."

"There are not too many places more powerful than the Galapagos Islands when it comes to understanding our planet," said Corwin. "Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" perfectly captures what makes the creatures living there such unique characters."

Produced by Anthony Geffen, written by David Attenborough and narrated by Jeff Corwin, "Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" is directed by Martin Williams and features original music composed by Joel Douek. The film is a Colossus Productions presentation in association with SKY 3D, distributed by nWave Pictures Distribution.

"Galapagos 3D: Nature's Wonderland" was filmed on location over a ten- month period in 2012 and 2013, followed by five months of post-production. Using breakthrough digital 3D filmmaking technologies and featuring 4K ultra-high resolution imagery, the producers have brought to life the extraordinary world of the Galapagos archipelago in a way that has not been possible before. The Galapagos Islands are governed by Ecuador and lie some 600 miles from the coast of South America.

The film's official website is http://Galapagos.nWave.com
