Come on, Puppy Throwing Girl. What were you thinking?

As it turns out, people around the world have a soft spot for helpless, baby animals. Thus, when a video of a young hurling black and white puppies into a river started making the rounds on the internet, animal protection groups and individuals alike were up in arms.

Note: When I say individuals, I mean Hollywood director Michael Bay (of Transformers fame). He offered a $50,000(!!!) reward for the prosecution of the modern day Cruella de Ville.

What Throwing Puppies Will Do to Your Rep

Other than giving you a remarkably un-elegant nickname (Puppy Throwing Girl? Really? I feel like Pooch Destroyer or Mutt Murderess have way more media appeal), killing baby animals on tape can actually lead to big time fines depending on your nation’s government. Because in a lot of places, animal abuse is illegal. Go figure.

It took civilian groups less than three days to track down Puppy Throwing Girl, get her details and deliver them to Bosnian officials so they can in turn deliver the Puppy Throwing Family a $6,000 fine.

In addition, social media sources like Twitter are all atwitter with suggestions of “an eye for an eye” and “throw her into a river.”  YouTube, it turns out, is a great place for internet vigilantes to hang out.

What’s Next for Puppy Throwing Girl?

Are these the first signs of a real life Dexter-like serial killer? Or is Puppy Throwing Girl just missundaztood? I’m sure we’ll find out in the Lifetime movie that will eventually surface on DISH Network channel 109.

Quickfire Challenge:  Food and Wine Pairing

-Create a Dish Based on a Wine Pairing

Back at the house, Kevin attempted to convey the importance of being one of the five remaining chefs in the competition, saying, “It’s time to cook.”  I’m sorry, but I was under the impression that it was time to cook from the very first challenge!  I get what Kevin was insinuating: bring your “A” game, no more messing around, etc, but haven’t those with the winning mindset (e.g. Angelo) been doing that from the start?  Either way, the five remaining contestants headed out to the Top Chef Kitchens, where they found a table full of wine and Padma, waiting with their guest judge for the challenge: Dana Cowin, Editor-in-Chief at Food & Wine Magazine. Considering that the winner of ‘Top Chef D.C.’ gets a feature in this prestigious publication, the chefs were notably excited for this challenge. Cowin explained how only about 10 percent of food and wine pairings really hit the mark, and she said she was looking for the chefs to “hit that magical 10 percent” of pairings that are genius.  Padma informed the chefs that their task would be to choose a wine from the table and create an amazing dish that would pair well with their selected wine.  She also told the chefs that this would be their final high stakes Quickfire, the winner being awarded a trip to London, including airfare, courtesy of Hilton Hotels.  The chefs had 1 hour to prepare their dishes.

Here’s a rundown of the contestants, their food and wine pairing, and some thoughts on how they fared:

Angelo:

-Sautéed Foie Gras with Black Salt and Fennel Salad (Evolution White Wine)

Dana called it “an interesting dish,” which can often be taken to mean either really good or really bad, but Angelo proved he does know his wines, as he ended up on top of this challenge.  Dana thought his pairing had a “nice contrast” between the “crispness and lightness” of the wine and the “heaviness” of the foie gras.

Ed:

-Grilled Wagyu Rib Eye with Spring Potato Risotto and Mushroom Ragout (Il Poggione Rosso)

Neither Padma nor Dana commented on Ed’s dish, which is always a sign that the chef will land smack-dab in the middle of the pack, which Ed did on this challenge.

Kelly:

-Wild Board Tenderloin, Blackberry Conserve, Mache, and Blue Cheese Emulsion (Federalist Dry Creek Zinfandel)

The addition of the blue cheese foam “took it off the chart a little bit,” according to Dana.  Clearly, “off the chart” did not equal “better than expected” when it came to describing Kelly’s dish here.

Kevin:

-Grilled Quail with Shaved Apple, Fennel Salad, and Apple Vinaigrette (Tangley Oaks Merlot)

Kevin had to switch to quail after realizing his pressure-cooked meat wasn’t going to pan out.  Dana called the quail “delicate” and “beautifully cooked” but claimed that his pairing with the merlot “wasn’t really the perfect match.”

Tiffany:

-Cocoa & Black Pepper-Crusted Wagyu Tenderloin with Spring Risotto (Two Hands Shiraz)

Padma commented that Tiffany’s meat was “cooked beautifully.”  Dana also thought the seasoning worked “really beautifully” with Tiffany’s wine, and that the reduction was “elegant.”

Losers and Winners

After judges’ tasting and commentary, the results of the Quickfire were as follows:

BOTTOM TWO = Kevin and Kelly

TOP TWO = Angelo and Tiffany

QUICKFIRE WINNER = Angelo, who won the trip to London for his beautiful pairing that Dana said she “wanted to have again tomorrow.”  Kevin suggested that perhaps Angelo “has his mojo back.”

Let’s see how he (and the other contestants) fared in the next round.

Elimination Challenge:  Out of this World

-Create a Dish that Can Be Freeze-Dried and Sent Into Space

Padma informed the chefs that this would be their final Elimination Challenge, and that the four chefs who made it past this round would be taken on the first ever Top Chef “international” adventure, as the season finale would be set in Singapore.  First, though, the five remaining chefs would be working with NASA (!) and would be offered further details of their “mission” at the Goddard Space Center.  There they met the Head Food Scientist at NASA, Vickie Kloeris, and were surprised with a special message directly from SPACE!  I repeat, from SPACE!  From floating astronauts in SPACE (via satellite, from the International SPACE Station)!

The mission was clear: the chefs would be responsible for creating a dish that followed NASA’s guidelines for dining at zero gravity.  They’d be cooking for a table of 8, including NASA scientists, astronauts, judges, and special guest Buzz Aldrin!  The winning dish would be recreated at NASA headquarters in Texas and would be sent to SPACE!  Vickie wrapped things up by giving the chefs a few pointers about how they could best approach this challenge; she suggested that the chefs avoid the heavy use of sugar and large pieces of ingredients (neither of which freeze dries well), and that they should embrace the use of spices, which the astronauts love!

After heading to Whole Foods with 30 minutes of shopping time and a $200 budget (did anyone else see Angelo hit that lady with his cart?), the chefs headed back to the TC Kitchens for their usual prep time.  Tiffany had a nice saying about “cooking from the soul” and how good food “just needs to be flavorful.”  I was really hoping this method would pay off for her, continuing the swing of her last few (very) successful weeks.  Tom made his requisite trip around the kitchen to check in with the chefs and wish them luck.

The following day, the chefs woke up to find a note in their kitchen, from Padma, claiming that “their ride” to NASA was waiting in the driveway; the winner of the challenge would get to take it home.  Outside, the chefs encountered a beautiful jet black Toyota Avalon.  Angelo took the liberty of driving the team to Ronald Reagan International Trade Center, where they had 1 hour to cook their final meals.  The judges table was graced with renowned chefs Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert, space legend Buzz Aldrin, astronauts Sandra Magnus and Leland Melvin, NASA food scientist Vickie Kloeris, and of course Tom Colicchio and Padma Laksmi.

Here’s a rundown of the chefs, their “out of this world” creations, and some thoughts on how they fared:

Angelo:

-Ginger-Lacquered Short Ribs and Horseradish Crème Fraîche

Buzz thought it was “very tasty” and that the hidden pickled mushroom was “a surprise.”  Tom didn’t like the candied ginger because it was “too sweet,” but Padma seemed to favor Angelo’s dish over all others.

Ed:

-Yogurt-Marinated Rack of Lamb with Eggplant Purée and Couscous Croquette

Tom said Ed’s dish was “really flavorful” and that everything was well-cooked and well-seasoned; Eric said it was “too complicated”; Anthony thought Ed “nailed it” and that he “cooked his heart out.”

Kelly:

-Pan-Roasted Halibut with Artichoke and Fennel Barigoule and Salsa Verde Salad

Tom called it “really well done”; Buzz thought it was “very nice”; Sandra thought the “crunchy” artichokes would be welcome in space.

Kevin:

-NY Strip Steak with Bacon-Jalapeño Marmalade and Corn Purée

Tom thought Kevin did a cook job “cooking the meat,” explaining that it was “well-seasoned”; Vickie thought it would be a challenge to maintain the crispness of the onions, but Sandra said she would “love to eat them in space!”

Tiffany:

-Pan-Seared Alaskan Halibut with Coconut Curry, Snow Pea Shoots, and Jasmine Rice

Eric wasn’t excited about many of the ingredients; he claimed he didn’t see them “coming together to elevate the halibut.”  Anthony, on the other hand, described the fish sauce as “singing” to him.

The Results

After judges’ tasting and commentary, it was clear that every chef created a tasty and successful dish.  However, someone still needed to be sent home.  The results were as follows:

ELIMINATION CHALLENGE WINNER = Angelo, who gave the judges an “out of this world” dish.

Please Pack Your Knives and Go

I already sensed that I wasn’t going to be happy with this decision, seeing as I’m a fan of most of the remaining contestants, and it turns out I was beyond disappointed with judges’ table.  Tiffany, please pack your knives and go. I was shocked by Tiffany’s departure; I thought that Kevin’s inconsistency would have sent him packing, instead.

Quote of the Episode: “Well I’m shocked by Ripert’s dark, cynical, snarky, and negative world view, because I found this, ya know…it’s all about love and optimism for me now, because I gotta tell you, I thought this dish was very sophisticated and I think might actually be easily adaptable to an extra terrestrial situation.” –Anthony Bourdain, in response to Eric Ripert’s criticism of Angelo’s dish as being “too acidic.”
