(Photo: David Ciardelli, left, and Andrew Sternberg pause outside the walls of Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. Sternberg's prisoner number, 68840, is affixed to his blazer. )

It's not often that the Google vanity search yields mindblowing new information regarding your namesake. But just today I discovered the inspiring story of a Holocaust survivor with whom I happen to share both first and last names.

Andrew Sternberg was 16 on June 23, 1945 when he was liberated from Ebensee concentration camp in Austria with the help of troops from the U.S. Army's 80th Infantry Division.

In the 1950's he immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Cleveland, where I gather he still lives today (Shaker Heights) -- at least according to this June 2010 News Sun article.

In May 1944, the Nazis deported his family from Nagykanizsa, Hungary, to Auschwitz, in Poland, where guards immediately separated Sternberg from his parents. He never saw either one again. Weeks later, he was transported by cattle car to Austria.

My search initially brought up the PDF below (and linked here), which was reprinted from the March 10, 1995 Cleveland Jewish News. The document is hosted at http://hias.org, the website for the Hebrew Immigration Aid Society which, along with the International Rescue Committtee, effectively made it possible for Sternberg and others to immigrate and start a new life in the U.S. He struggled in his first years in Cleveland but then started a successful heating and air conditioning servicing company.

Andrew Sternberg continues visiting area schools to talk about the Holocaust and taking an annual trip to visit concentration camp sites in Hungary and Austria, according to the June 2010 article.

Thanks Google for the inspiring revelation. It would be an honor to meet this man!

via Pew Internet & American Life Project

Technology is increasingly relevant to Americans’ monetary contributions to the causes and organizations they support. Previous research from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project has found that one in five US adults (20%) have made a charitable contribution online, and that one in ten (9%) have made a charitable contribution using the text messaging feature on their mobile phone. Mobile giving played an especially prominent role during the aftermath of the January 2010 Haiti earthquake, as individual donors contributed an estimated $43 million to the assistance and reconstruction efforts using the text messaging feature on their cell phones.

This new mode of engagement offers opportunities to philanthropies and charitable groups for reaching new donors under new circumstances as messages spread virally through friend networks. At the same time, it poses new challenges, including the uncertainty in fund-raising groups about whether these new donors will remain engaged once they make their donation. In an effort to more fully understand the world of mobile giving, the Pew Internet Project, in partnership with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and the mGive Foundation, and supported by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, conducted the first in-depth study of mobile donors. This report on those who gave to the “Text for Haiti” campaign is based on telephone surveys with 863 individuals who contributed money to the Haiti earthquake efforts using the text messaging feature on their cell phones, and who consented to further communications at the telephone number they used to make their donation. The margin of sampling error is ±3 percentage points based on Haiti text donors who consented to these additional communications.

Among the key findings of this research:

The ability to send small donations using mobile phones facilitates “impulse giving” in response to moving images or events

For a sizeable majority of the Haiti text donors surveyed, their contribution to earthquake relief was a quick decision in response to images they saw on television, and involved minimal background research. The vast majority of these donors (89%) heard about the Text to Haiti effort on television, and half (50%) made their contribution immediately upon learning about the campaign. An additional 23% donated on the same day they heard about it. In addition to conducting little research before making a donation, most have not paid close attention to the ongoing reconstruction efforts in Haiti—43% have been following these efforts “not too closely” and 15% have been following them “not at all”.

More generally, three-quarters of the Haiti text donors in this sample say that their text message contributions usually result from spur-of-the-moment decisions that do not involve a lot of additional research, while 21% say that they usually research their text contributions beforehand. Online donations tend to involve more deliberation, as half of these donors say that they typically do a lot of research before donating money online.

The typical Haiti text donor in our survey was a first-time mobile giver who made a single contribution to earthquake relief using his or her mobile phone

Three-quarters (74%) of Haiti text donors in this survey were first time mobile givers, meaning that their contribution to earthquake relief was the first time they had used the text messaging function on their phone to make a charitable contribution. Overall, 80% of the mobile givers in our survey donated to the earthquake recovery efforts using only their cell phones—and not using any other methods such as online contributions or in-person donations. About a third of them made more than one contribution for Haiti relief using their mobile phone.

A majority of the Haiti text donors in our sample have contributed to more recent disaster recovery efforts using their phones

More than half of the donors surveyed have made text message contributions to other disaster relief efforts since their Haiti donation. Two in five of these donors (40%) texted a donation to groups helping people living in Japan following the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami, 27% texted a donation to groups helping people living in the US Gulf region following the 2010 BP oil spill, and 18% texted a donation to groups helping victims of the 2011 tornadoes in the United States. Taken together, 56% of Haiti mobile givers in our sample made a contribution to at least one of these events.

Charitable giving in the mobile age by these donors is a social networking activity, but more through in-person conversations than through online tools

Just under half (43%) of the Haiti text donors we surveyed, encouraged their friends or family members to make a similar contribution using their mobile phones. Overall, most of these efforts were successful—76% of these “encouragers” say that their friends or family members did indeed make a contribution to earthquake relief using their phones—and non-whites and young donors were particularly likely to spread the word among their friend networks.

Although technology helped facilitate their initial donation, the donors we surveyed were more likely to spread the word about their contribution through face-to-face conversations than through online means. Of those who encouraged a friend or family member to contribute, 75% did so by talking with others in person, and 38% did so via voice call. By comparison, 34% encouraged others to contribute by sending a text message, 21% did so by posting on a social networking site and 10% did so via email.

These mobile givers are willing to make donations in a number of ways—but prefer not to do so by making a phone call

Although donating to organizations or causes using text messaging offers advantages in terms of speed and convenience, the mobile givers we surveyed are divided when it comes to their preferred tool for making charitable contributions. Overall, text messaging (favored by 25% of these Haiti text donors) and online web forms (favored by 24%) are most preferred, followed closely by mail (favored by 22%) and in-person donations (favored by 19%). Voice calling stands out from the pack as the least preferred option: just 6% of the Haiti mobile givers we interviewed prefer making donations over the phone.

The Haiti text donors in this survey are similar to Americans as a whole when it comes to participation in social or civic groups and engagement with news, but differ when it comes to technology ownership

In this survey we looked at several dimensions of the lives of these givers. They stand apart from other Americans in that they have more technology in their lives, but their civic profile and their engagement with news mirrors the general population. They are not necessarily major donors in general, though almost all give at least something to other charities.

A report released by Pew Research today indicates that 55% of smartphone owners use their phones to get location-based directions or recommendations, while geosocial services and location-tagging features are less popular.

A much smaller number (5% of cell owners, equaling 4% of all adults) use their phones to check in to locations using geosocial services such as Foursquare or Gowalla. Smartphone owners are especially likely to use these services on their phones.

9% of internet users set up social media services such as Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn so that their location is automatically included in their posts on those services. That works out to 7% of all adults.

Corp, combined with James Murdoch’s failure to be candid when he testified before a parliamentary committee, it seems evident the Murdochs don’t meet the FCC’s character standard.”

Yesterday, former News of the World editor Colin Myles and legal manager Tom Crone said that when testifying before parliament on Tuesday, James Murdoch inaccurately denied seeing the so-called “for Neville” email before settling the lawsuit of Gordon Taylor, the chief executive of the Professional Footballers Association in 2008. The email apparently contains information indicating more than one rogue reporter was involved in the hacking, meaning Mr. Murdoch was aware over two years ago that the hacking was much more significant than the company ever admitted before the scandal exploded earlier this month.

In addition, on Wednesday, Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) sent a letter to the attorney general and the FBI director noting that another News Corp. subsidiary, News America had been involved in computer hacking in 2004.

“News Corp. has a pattern of outrageous and illegal conduct, including bribery, wire fraud, computer and phone hacking. Add to that James Murdoch’s lack of candor in confronting the scandal and addressing the parliamentary committee, and it is hard to see how the Murdochs meet the FCC’s character standard,” said Ms. Sloan. “Congress should hold hearings on this issue and forward its findings to the FCC for further action against News Corp. Holding U.S. broadcast licenses is a privilege, not a right. The Murdochs – through a pattern of misconduct and deception – may have lost that right.”

---

Happy World Listening Day 2011: July 18 // what's up with your soundscape today?

The World Listening Project (WLP) and Midwest Society for Acoustic Ecology (MSAE) invite you to participate in the 2011 World Listening Day on Monday, July 18.

Here are several possible ways to participate:

Organize a soundwalk. What is a soundwalk? Start here

Organize a performance event that explores soundscape and how we can listen to our sonic environment.

Participate introspectively by simply paying attention to your soundscape.

You can facilitate an educational event that relates to acoustic ecology, field recordings, or a similar topic.

The level of participation in 2010 was amazing. We would like to see if we could double or even triple the number of participants worldwide this time. If you would like to participate in the 2011 World Listening Day, please download and fill out the 2011 World Listening Day participation form. Then email it to <worldlistening@gmail.com> with “World Listening Day” in the subject line.

2011 World Listening Day (doc)

The first World Listening Day was co-organized by the WLP and MSAE. July 18 was chosen as the date for World Listening Day because it is the birthday of Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer, who established the World Soundscape Project in the late-60s at Simon Fraser University. Schafer’s 1977 book, The Soundscape: Our Sonic Environment and the Tuning of the World was a culminating publication about the research of the WSP that provided a foundation for the interdisciplinary field now known as Acoustic Ecology.

World Listening Day in translation

2010 World Listening Day participants: organizations, projects, and individuals

Referencing a survey of 26,644 online consumers in 53 markets across the globe conducted during September 2010, and building upon the previous insights into digital music consumption, music apps and streaming, and consumer willingness to pay, this report addresses some of the most fundamental issue facing the industry today: how to optimize marketing and how to maximize revenue generation.

Ketchum / @BlogHer Study Reveals How Cause Marketing Can Move Consumers from Talk to Purchase

While Americans claim they are more likely to purchase a product if the brand supports a cause, and more than 40 percent have “liked” a brand or posted on Facebook for supporting a cause, barely one in five actually put their money where their good intentions are by switching brands, paying more or purchasing more. (PR)

Core Findings and Summary

Blogs and Facebook have joined the ranks of mainstream media, showing continued modest growth.

Everyone is an early adopter, thanks to mobile devices.

Adoption rates of new services and tools are high, but volatile.

Blog recommendations lead to good product experience.

Positive experiences translates into trust.

Familiar bloggers rule, and are even more engaging than celebrities.

Technology and media are good things, but passion doesn’t always follow usage.

We use different media for different purposes.

We consume some media regularly without really loving it.

Economic concerns are still paramount.

Interestingly, BlogHers report substantially less unemployment, and substantially more self-employment.

9 June 2011, Rome - Climate change will have major impacts on the availability of water for growing food and on crop productivity in the decades to come, warns a new FAO report.
Climate Change, Water, and Food Security is a comprehensive survey of existing scientific knowledge on the anticipated consequences of climate change for water use in agriculture.
These include reductions in river runoff and aquifer recharges in the Mediterranean and the semi-arid areas of the Americas, Australia and southern Africa -- regions that are already water-stressed. In Asia, large areas of irrigated land that rely on snowmelt and mountain glaciers for water will also be affected, while heavily populated river deltas are at risk from a combination of reduced water flows, increased salinity, and rising sea levels.
Additional impacts described in the report:
An acceleration of the world's hydrological cycle is anticipated as rising temperatures increase the rate of evaporation from land and sea. Rainfall will increase in the tropics and higher latitudes, but decrease in already dry semi-arid to mid-arid latitudes and in the interior of large continents. A greater frequency in droughts and floods will need to be planned for but already, water scarce areas of the world are expected to become drier and hotter.
Even though estimates of groundwater recharge under climate change cannot be made with any certainty, the increasing frequency of drought can be expected to encourage further development of available groundwater to buffer the production risk for farmers.
And the loss of glaciers - which support around 40 percent of the world's irrigation -- will eventually impact the amount of surface water available for agriculture in key producing basins
Increased temperatures will lengthen the growing season in northern temperate zones but will reduce the length almost everywhere else. Coupled with increased rates of evapotranspiration this will cause the yield potential and water productivity of crops to decline.
"Both the livelihoods of rural communities as well as the food security of city populations are at risk," said FAO Assistant Director General for Natural Resources, Alexander Mueller. "But the rural poor, who are the most vulnerable, are likely to be disproportionately affected."
Responding to the challenge

FAO's report also looks at actions that can be taken by national policymakers, regional and local watershed authorities, and individual farmers to respond to these new challenges.
One key area requiring attention is improving the ability of countries to implement effective systems for ‘water accounting' - the thorough measurement of water supplies, transfers, and transactions in order to inform decisions about how water resources can be managed and used under increasing variability.
"Water accounting in most developing countries is very limited, and allocation procedures are non existent, ad hoc, or poorly developed," the report says. "Helping developing countries acquire good water accounting practices and developing robust and flexible water allocations systems will be a first priority."
At the farm level, growers can change their cropping patterns to allow earlier or later planting, reducing their water use and optimizing irrigation. Yields and productivity can be improved by shifting to soil moisture conservation practices, including zero- and minimum tillage. Planting deep-rooted crops would allow farmers to better exploit available soil moisture.
Mixed agroforestry systems also hold promise. These systems both sequester carbon and also offer additional benefits such as shade that reduces ground temperatures and evaporation, added wind protection, and improved soil conservation and water retention.
However, FAO's report also stresses that small-scale producers in developing countries will face an uphill struggle in adopting such strategies.
"Farm size and access to capital set the limits for the scope and extent of adaptation and change at farm level," it warns, noting that already today many developing world farms produce yields far below their agro-climatic potential.
Zooming in on hotspots

FAO also warns that far too little is known about how climate change impacts on water for agriculture will play out at the regional and sub-regional level, and where farmers will be most at risk.
"Greater precision and focus is needed to understand the nature, scope and location of climate change impacts on developing country water resources for agriculture," the report says, adding: "Mapping vulnerability is a key task at national and regional levels."

An online survey was conducted by TNS Global among a nationally representative sample of 2,000 Americans ages 18 and over. The survey was fielded November 30 to December 22, 2010, and has a margin of error of +/-2.2% at the 95% confidence level.

Nearly one in three African American adults (30%) and four in ten Hispanics (39%) say they are more likely to support a cause or social issue online than offline today—both significantly higher percentages than Caucasians (24%). Additional findings highlight the similarities and differences in the specific causes Americans support, as well as the degree to which cause involvement is a familial undertaking for different ethnicities.

The Critical Decade

Over many decades thousands of scientists have painted an unambiguous picture: the global climate is changing and humanity is almost surely the primary cause. The risks have never been clearer and the case for action has never been more urgent.

Our Earth’s surface is warming rapidly and we can already see social, economic and environmental impacts in Australia.

Failing to take sufficient action today entails potentially huge risks to our economy, society and way of life into the future.

This is the critical decade for action.

via http://climatecommission.govspace.gov.au/2011/05/23/the-critical-decade/
