“Jersey Shore” has been broadcast to an audience in 30 countries with commercials using a well known reference to anabolic steroids. The hit MTV reality television series has courted its share of controversy with its portrayal of Italian Americans as “guidos and guidettes” but one ad spot appears to capitalize on suspicions that some of the more muscular cast members may have used anabolic steroids to obtain their physiques. The New York Times discusses the use of the steroid reference “get juiced” to promote “”Jersey Shore” in the “Get Juiced, Get Jersey Shored” television commercial broadcast in English-speaking markets overseas.

Other spots purport to show how to “get tanned,” “get fist-pumping,” and “get juiced” by featuring actors of various ethnicities pumping iron and styling their hair. All are allusions to the grooming and partying rituals of the series’ young stars, but “get juiced” stands out because in America it is a well-known steroids reference. Sean Saylor, who is overseeing the marketing campaign for MTV Networks International, said that the slogan wasn’t meant to refer to steroids. Rather, “it’s more about working out,” he said.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) shows that the federal government still know how to use scare tactics in their antidrug public service announcements.

A recent ad campaign entitled “Steroids? Not in my game plan” linked anabolic steroids to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV is the virus that can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Steroids? Not i my game plan. How about you?

Succeding without steroids is about being true to myself. It’s about making a commitment to my body and my life. It’s about knowing the risks of steroid use… and refusing to take them. Acne, balness, stunted growth, even risk of HIV – these are not a part of my game plan. How about you?

Keep your body healthy. Don’t use drugs?

Of course, anabolic steroids themselves do not cause HIV infection. While it is possible that HIV transmission when dirty needles are shared by an individual infected with HIV, this practice is not generally considered something that occurs among steroid users.

The campaign makes the erroneous assumption that patterns of steroid use and similar to patterns of use among heroin, cocaine and amphetamine addicts who inject drugs and are more likely to share needles.

There is not a single documented case of HIV transmission among anabolic steroids users.

The Substitute 3: Winner Takes All (1999) – The use of the steroid plot in this movie only serves as a convenient excuse for Treat Williams, the part-time mercenary, part-time teacher, to engage in an all-out violent war with the local organized crime syndicate. Nonetheless, the movies doesn’t fail to demonize steroids with a strong anti-steroid message along the way.

After the attractive local college English literature professor is brutally attacked and assaulted for refusing to give star football players a free pass, Treat Williams character is determined to get revenge. He discovers that the most of the star football players on the college team are using anabolic steroids. Of course, these players just happen to be aggressive, disrespectful jerks. According to Treat Williams, such “wired” behavior could only be attributable to steroids or cocaine. Steroids? Cocaine? What’s the difference?! Apparently, these drugs must be pharmacologically similar since they are both on the controlled substance list.

Anyone who has seen any of the previous movies in the Substitute series will know to expect a high body count in a Treat Williams movie. A single assault and widespread steroid use by the college football team do not provide sufficient motive for significant casualties. So, the steroid scandal is escalated when Treat learns that the head football coach is supplying his team with steroids who in turn is acquiring them from a local organized crime syndicate.

The final straw for Treat is the death of a college football player in the gym. The athlete was inexplicably lifting weights in the middle of the night, performing bench presses without the assistance of a spotter. After several repetitions to failure, the football player is unable to rack the weight. The bar falls on his neck and ultimately asphyxiates him.

Treat discovers the player’s limp body underneath the bar the following morning. Inside a gym bag next to the bench, Treat finds a bottle of Anatest, described as a veterinarian steroid used for race horses. Somehow, Treat determines that the dead weightlifter was injecting enough steroids for “three tons of horse flesh.” In spite of the overwhelming evidence that a weight bar loaded with several 45 pound plates pressed against the next of the lifter was the cause of death, Treat concludes that the death was caused by a steroid overdose.

The death of the football player inspired Treat, as the substitute English literature professor, to give a heartfelt lecture warning his class (and football players in his class) of the litany of side effects one can experience from steroids. I don’t think a single purported side effect was omitted during the course of his lecture. Treat continues by hammering home the point, that… “Steroids can kill you. Not years from now or down the road but right now, today, this minute.” Powerful words, if not completely untrue.

Deadly Little Secrets (2000) – There are plenty of bad “B” movies. And there are plenty of movies about serial killers. But I had to review this movie because of the outrageous and incredulous plot. I don’t think there ever existed such a serial killer with the following modus operandi in real life or cinema…

Dr. Gordon Childs, a top sports physician has abandoned his medical practice to focus exclusively on developing designer steroids for professional athletes in track, football, baseball, tennis, etc. The designer steroids were in such high demand than anyone who was anyone knew this steroid doctor. Dr.Childs had access to top athletes and shared the lavish lifestyles with them.

Unfortunately, the terrible side effects of his designer steroids ultimately led to his downfall. A regular user of his own product, Dr. Childs became impotent and was unable to perform sexually on many occasions. During one group sex encounter, he became increasingly frustrated at his impotence. So, after a quick injection of his special “clear blue” designer steroid, he was given a rush of homicidal aggression that compelled him to inject several syringes of steroid into the back of male athlete that was having sex with the doctor’s lover.

Given the powerful properties of the steroids he developed, this bolus was a lethal dose. The athlete died instantly from a steroid overdose.

The terrible addiction to his own designer steroid inexplicably leads Dr. Childs to become a serial steroid killer. He murdered at least four athletes. His modus operandi was a syringe full of deadly designer anabolic steroids. Apparently, the steroids were so good that a little would make an elite athlete the best in their field, but too much was deadly!

Unfortunately, the reality of the matter is that no amount of anabolic-androgenic steroids is capable of killing anyone instantly. There are many side effects associated with steroid use, most of them reversible, but there is scant evidence that steroid use can be acutely fatal.

Whatever It Takes (1999) – Several years before Congress found it politically expedient to explore steroids in wrestling and bodybuilding, Hollywood decided to treat us to its own perspective on the issue. The result was the 1999 movie called “Whatever It Takes”, starring Don “The Dragon” Wilson and Andrew Dice Clay who played two undercover cops investigating the illegal distribution of anabolic steroids to bodybuilders and wrestlers.

The movie is most commonly recognized in the fitness community as the big screen acting debut of MuscleMag cover girl Vicki Pratt (whose uncredited appearance became noteworthy because of her topless scenes). Also, appearing were several pro bodybuilders including Aaron Baker, Claude Groulx, Curtis Loeffler, Christine Lydon, Ericca Kern and Deidre Pagnanelli as well as pro football player Eric Hill.

Very early in “Whatever It Takes“, we are treated to the producers’ ignorance regarding the pharmacological effects of anabolic steroids, with the portrayal of a steroid overdose. Athletes overdosing on steroids is apparently a common occurence in the cinema, but does not occur in reality. Even anti-steroid experts such as Charles Yesalis are repeatedly on record as stating that no acute dose of steroids can cause a fatal overdose.

Yet such an overdose appears to be the outcome of steroid use in an early sequence of events in this movie. A wrestler injects himself with either growth hormone or steroid (they are discussed interchangeably in the movie); he displays aggressive (steroid-induced) behavior in the ring; shortly thereafter he is seen in bed with two women (steroid-induced hypersexuality); only to be found dead (steroid-induced death). Certainly, the menage a trois could have been the culprit, but when his dealer discovers his body, he wastes no time in clearing the wrestler’s medicine cabinet from all the steroids he consumed, suggesting a connection to the death.

Due to numerous high-profiles deaths due to a “highly addictive growth hormone” that is three times more power than any other steroid, the DEA has made the crackdown of a steroid distribution network for wrestlers and bodybuilders a high priority undercover mission. The new growth hormone and/or steroid drug (the terminology is used interchangeably) is incredibly dangerous – it “jacks up the heart rate like a freight train rolling by until the heart literally shakes itself apart.” We learn from the movie that steroids are clearly nasty drugs that can have deadly consequences.

We are treated to a few more side effects as the movies continues. Bodybuilder Curtis Loeffler makes a brief appearance as the stereotypical bodybuilder whose uncontained aggression is presumably caused by steroids.

And if the side effects of steroids discussed in the movie up to this point do not adequately deliver the anti-steroid message, this movie goes one step beyond suggesting testicular atrophy or even penis shrinkage. The possibility that a steroid user’s penis may actually “fall off” is introduced to the audience.

Contrary to the overall demonization of steroids in the movie, towards the end, Don Wilson’s character admits that steroids aren’t “poison” but still illegal and dangerous nonetheless. Sadly, the movie perpetuates the myth that acute (or short-term) steroid use can cause immediate death. In fact, a causal relationship between even long-term steroid use and death has yet to be firmly established.

Strangers with Candy – Extensive media attention has recently been given to the alleged widespread steroid use by teenage girls; the rates have largely been discounted as overstated even by anti-steroid experts such as Harrison Pope, MD. But nonetheless, the fear of female steroid users have contributed to the collective paranoia regarding the dangers of steroids.

Occasionally, television and cinema explore the topic of anabolic steroid use by women, usually for comic effect. Such is the case with the sitcom, Strangers with Candy. The main character is Jerri Blank – a 46 year-old former drug addict who lives with her parents and has re-enrolled as a freshman at Flatpoint High School. Given the absurdity of the premise of this Comedy Central sitcom, we can only expect an equally unrealistic treatment of the topic of female steroid use.

Jerri is a member of the Flatpoint High School girls’ track relay team. She performs absymally in the event and is given an ultimatum by her coach – either improve her performance or get kicked off the team. She is told that she has a body fat percentage of 80% with the remainder likely consisting of scar tissue. She is “pressured” to do whatever it takes to improve.

Jerri is reluctant to work hard at anything but decides that the prurient lesbian opportunities of tub time and the locker room make the effort worthwhile. She ventures into NutriWhiz Nutrition Center seeking a miracle in a bottle. A chubby store clerk, played by Andy Richter, initially recommends a legal supplement protocol that will produce marginal improvements over six months. But given Jerri’s desperation, he reveals a syringe and gives her a bottle of injectable anabolic steroids. He dismisses side effects and assures her that steroids will neither shrivel her testicles or reduce her sperm count (since she is a girl); the only real concern from the use of anabolic steroids is brain cancer.

Strangers with Candy comically explores several of the possible motivations often suggested for teenager steroid use. Peer pressure, body image issues, coach encouragement, and the alleged unscrupulous supplement salesmen who use supplements only as a gateway to dealing steroids.

Jerri experiences miraculous results and becomes the star athlete of her relay team. After a track meet, she reveals “Jerri’s secret little helpers – steroids.” After minimal discussion of clitoral enlargement, the girls all eagerly and enthusiastically volunteer to allow Jerri to “inject them in the behind” with steroids. Accordingly, the sexuality of any female who chooses to use “male hormones” is suspect.

Furthermore, this scene displays the producers ignorance about the method of administration of injectable anabolic-androgenic steroids. Jerri suggests intravaneous route when she expresses the need to find a vein in the “nude behinds” of her teammates.

The results of the Flatpoint High School track team’s experimentation with anabolic steroids is a smashing success. Detection of their steroid use is cleverly avoided and the athletes experience few side effects other than facial hair growth reminiscent of ZZ Top.

As Jerri enjoys the true rewards of her steroid use, frolicking with her teammates in the hot tub, she explains the lessons that the steroid experience has taught her:

“Only losers do drugs unless they help you win. Then only winners do drugs!”

This episode listed several potential side effects of anabolic steroid use: testicular atrophy, reduced sperm count, clitoral enlargement, facial hair, and brain cancer. All of the side effects were summarily dismissed or the characters simply failed to acknowledge them. Interestingly, the testicular atropy and effect on sperm count had no relevance for the population group involved (i.e. females). Clitoral enlargement was referenced without concern and the excessive facial hair was never acknowledgement although clearly apparent to viewers. The one side effect that was give credence as a real and established contraindication was brain cancer. Most steroid researchers and anti-steroid advocates will agree that there is no scientific support for a causal relationship between steroid use and brain cancer. This episode probably references Lyle Alzado’s unfounded claim that steroids caused the rare brain lymphoma that contributed to his untimely death. Of course this rare brain lymphoma is inevitably linked to certain auto-immune disorders in 99% of such cases.

Regrettably, depictions of steroids and their side effects, even from silly Comedy Central sitcoms, ultimately reinforce a lot of misinformation available concerned steroids.

The NBC crime drama television series “Life” demonized anabolic steroids in the plotline of the episode entitled “Everything… All the Time.” The producers of “Life” blamed anabolic steroids for murder, roid rage, a suicide attempt, steroid overdose, and bleeding from the eyes in this bit of far-fetched anti-steroid propaganda. The “roid rage” scene rivaled the classic “Ben Affleck Roid Rage After School Special” in its imaginative and fictional portrayal of roid rage.

Anti-steroid crusaders will find an agreeable ending consistent with their agenda; the roid-raging steroid user (Jeff Soskin playing Marty Hawkins) dies from a “massive steroid overdose” as the result of a “steroid hot shot” with twenty times the potency of the average steroid dose!

This is one of the most uninformed depictions of anabolic steroids and so-called roid rage in television history rivaling Ben Affleck in ‘A Body to Die For: The Aaron Henry Story’ and Peter Billingsley in ‘The Fourth Man’ in its degree of absurdity.
