There’s An App For That

It only took 3 years but I finally got an iPhone. I have had an iPod Touch for a couple of years, but not having wireless access was killing me! Ok, maybe I am exaggerating a wee bit, but I am excited anyway.

Now that I have access to a mic, camera and gps, I am finding a lot of new uses and apps for this device. One that I have really enjoyed is called SprintGPS by Screenmedia (twitter @SprintGPS). This app tracks statistics about your workouts. It will track your bicycling, walking, and running routes and include pace, total vertical climb, calories burned, a map of where you have been, etc… It displays this information in on your iphone beautifully and will show you graphs of past workouts. It also gives you the option of sharing this information on their website and the ability to send a link to Twitter or Facebook. Here is one of my workouts.

The app lets you listen to your music as well by giving you the option of using your own playlists and setting up a power song. There are audio cues that remind you of your times at intervals of your choice.

I love this thing because it helps me keep track of my bike rides and pushes me to get out there and jump on the bike.

How Did I Miss This Band?

I grew up in the 80s and it was a very interesting time in music. MTV began when I was in junior high school and opened up a whole new world of music that I had never heard. The good and the bad.

There was one band that was very popular during my high school years called Mr. Mister. Most people have heard of their more popular songs like Kyrie, Broken Wings, etc… But there less known release “Go On” was the recording that I really enjoyed most by this group. Great music and lyrics, etc… I am not embarrassed to say I liked this band. They even played at our Grad Night.

One of the things that always intrigued me was the spiritual subject matter in their songs. Lead singer, Richard Page was a son of a pastor and his faith was always found in their lyrics. And this guy can flat out wail! But like so many bands, all good things always seem to come to an end.

Fast forward to today. I found out a co-worker was a big Richard Page/Mr. Mister fan and was telling me about Richard Page’s new release “Peculiar Life” (which I want to check out). She had also brought in some CDs of some of his earlier work as the group Pages (not my cup of tea) and a group post-Mr. Mister called 3rd Matinee. I am loving their recording “Meanwhile“. Why didn’t I know about this group?

The recording was released in 1994 and its production matches up quality-wise with anything heard today. It is filled with thoughtful lyrics, progressive time signatures and great vocals.

Recording Update #6

I can’t believe it! All of the recording for my EP is done. Today Deven Berryhill came and laid down a couple of nice leads. It was a lot of fun jammin’ with Deven. Great musician and great heart. Thanks Deven!

I took some time after Deven left to tighten up some of the mixes and I am pretty much done. I want to listen back to it for a couple of days and then make some last minute tweaks. I should be submitting this to CD Baby this week and I think will be available shortly thereafter. It will take another few weeks to be available on iTunes and Yahoo, but I am not exactly sure how long it will take. I will let everyone know when it is live.

I have learned one thing throughout this recording, it is a lot of work. In the past when I recorded with a group there was someone else mixing, another taking care of the scheduling, etc… This time I did everything on my own. Just think if I did a full 10 song recording instead of 5. Whew, I would be wiped.

I am looking forward to sharing this with everybody. Check back.

We’re Getting The Band Back Together…maybe

This is what is on my mind today…

So I have been busy getting this EP finished and it has got me thinking “maybe it’s time to start a band”. I enjoy doing the small intimate setup with my wife and I, but I really love leading worship with a full band. I don’t know if it is the fullness of the sound or the camaraderie, but I miss it.

Hmmm…I guess its time to do some praying to find out if this is a God thing.

Recording Update #5

A quick update on my EP. I am getting really close to finishing this thing! All of my vocals are done and now I only need to get Deven Berryhill to drop in a couple guitar parts and it will be time to finish the final mix.

Everything is sounding good and it is looking like the release will be late July because I got a little behind schedule.
