Hundreds of people will gather to celebrate V2 Cigs Electronic Cigarettes at Windward Plaza in Venice Beach, California, on Friday, June 8, 2012 at 3:00pm. Their goal is to set a world record for the most people in one place, simultaneously using their electronic cigarettes. V2 Cigs is extending an invitation to the citizens of California to join in the event and help raise awareness about this cigarette alternative. Those who participate will receive a free electronic cigarette and t-shirt. In related news, I just set a record for the most guys named Steve K writing about made up records while vaping ProVaris with dual coil tanks and blue drip tips.

A New Record for Most Made-up Records

V2 Cigs issued a press release touting a record-breaking event to be held in Venice Beach California next month. The record is… the most people using V2 Cigs products in the same place at the same time. This seems to be the week for screwball press releases.

Since I’m here and have space to fill, here’s my V2 Cigs review, which, unlike the record, is not made up.

Interview with Lorillard’s CEO

e-Cigarette review site Ecig Advanced attended a recent to tobacco association gathering. During that meeting, the site was able to score a couple of great interviews (I’m jealous, I admit it!). They published the first of those with the CEO of Lorillard who expressed concern over state and local municipalities imposing knee-jerk e-cigarette regulations.

But we were surprised to hear Kessler say he is more concerned about “knee-jerk state regulation”, in terms of states proposing bans or regulation of e-cigarettes without sound reasoning or an understanding of the product- a story we’ve already heard all too often in the e-cigarette world. By all means, a valid concern as so many members of the vaping community continue to put in countless hours battling proposed state regulation and bans.

The question in a lot of people’s minds I think is whether ecigs having the weight of big tobacco behind it will be less or more susceptible to bans in general. On one hand, there’s money behind big tobacco. On the other, there is guilt by association, the inaccurate arguments prohibitionists have put forward about a big tobacco plot are now true.

Cyprus and their Love of e-Cigarettes

In a followup to statements made about e-cigarettes earlier, the Cyprus government has issued a new, and even more inaccurate statement. According to the Cyprus Mail, the government is concerned about e-liquid and its nicotine content. While the government statement seems to think the vapor is nothing to worry about, it is afraid the existence of e-liquid poses a public health and environmental risk.

In an announcement on Monday, the Department warned the public to beware of liquid nicotine that was circulating the European market and which was considered to carry health risks.

“The liquid nicotine and mixers (the E-cigarettes) contain are considered very toxic for human health and dangerous for the environment,” said the department.

I’m going to assume the mixers statement is some sort of translation problem since I’m not quite sure what that means. Interestingly, earlier int he article the spokesperson said affects weren’t known, yet now they are saying they know the e-liquid to carry health risks. However, the point here is don’t drink the e-liquid, that’s not the intended use of the liquid.

Publish All the Propaganda!

Monitoring for e-cigarette news, I see a lot of press releases. Most are from questionable websites trying to build links for SEO purposes. Some are companies announcing new products. But I usually don’t see many that try to cram every prohibitionist group and bit of fear mongering all in one place. Until now – this press release covers just about everything you could imagine.

Ecigs have already been banned in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, and Mexico, and restricted in Finland, Malaysia, and Singapore. They are the subject of law suits brought by attorneys general in several states, and of a national class-action law suit which is pending. New Jersey and Suffolk County, NY, have banned their use in no-smoking areas, and about half a dozen states have banned the sale of ecigs to children. Recently, an ecig blew up in a Florida man’s face, leaving him in a hospital with severe burns, missing his front teeth and a chunk of his tongue.

That’s just a random sample. The press release has to be like 1000 words all of it the same stuff we’ve heard dozens of times over and over again. Many of which have long since been debunked.

It Started out so Good

The Ledger out of Lakeland, FL posted a blurb on e-cigarettes as part of a larger health stories roundup article. The story noted that research finds that e-cigarettes may help with memory for people trying to quit smoking. Then they had to go and ruin it and inject a little gratuitous FDA propaganda in there for kicks.

This shouldn’t be more than a temporary bridge between smoking and abstinence. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says there’s a lack of clinical trials on e-cigarettes’ safety and effectiveness. And that consumers don’t know what dose of nicotine they’re inhaling.

I don’t even know what to say. At least the Ledger gets some bonus points for using a picture of a guy vaping an eGo-C as the cover image for the article.

Democracy a Health Hazard

The New England town of Cohasset recently voted down a rather overbearing proposal by the local health department. As I reported previously, the ban would have not only covered e-cigarettes, but dictated what is and is not appropriate for private merchants to sell by prohibiting pharmacies like CVS from selling cigarettes. Voters also thought this was a little overreaching when they shot the proposal down. Apparently overreaching is what the town’s health department does based on this statement from the news report:

By rejecting the board of health’s proposal, residents also voted down a ban on the use of electronic cigarettes in public places where traditional cigarettes are prohibited, including business offices and restaurants.

Voters may not have the final say, however. Earlier this month, Cohasset health inspector Tara Tradd said the town’s health board has the power to impose certain health policies, regardless of what is decided at town meeting.

It’s good to see that the health department is committed to making sure their opinions are enforced. Let’s not little things like lack of scientific evidence or democracy get in the way.

New from Steve K's Vaping World:

Ever wonder what your e-cigarette would be like if you could get Caffeine out of it instead of nicotine? The team over at Vape Dudes hit me up recently and asked if I would like to try their new e-liquid. I politely declined with my usual spiel about why I avoid doing e-liquid reviews myself. Then they replied and told me this was different, this e-liquid had caffeine in it instead of nicotine. eJolt The Vape Dudes call the e-liquid their eJolt line and it packs about 16mg of caffeine per 10 puffs. This piqued my interest. I wondered what would happen if you swapped out stimulants in your e-liquid. So I decided, why not, I’ll give my impressions of the stuff. Let me first preface this review with this: this really isn’t an e-liquid review. My palette isn’t very sensitive and flavor is highly subjective, so I sit that part out (opting instead to hand the juice stuff over to guest authors). The cool thing is that eJolt is available in their entire flavor catalog, so just pick something you like. I went with my favorite e-liquid from the dudes, Blue Honey. You can get eJolt in your favorite flavors at the Vape Dudes website. Did I mention I have coupons? First time users can save 40% with code vapedudes and repeat customers can save 25% using my exclusive code: STEVEK Ok, What’s the Deal? As I mentioned in the intro, eJolt comes by default with no nicotine. The company recently added an option to add nicotine to the liquid for a small charge. Might as well get this out of the way. I am in no way any sort of medical-type person, so on a scale to no biggie to Norman Bates, I have no idea how crazy adding nicotine into the mix is (or vaping caffeine to begin with). Do so at your own peril Anyway, I got mine before the option to add nicotine in existed, so the juice I’m sampling is nic free. There’s actually not a very high amount of caffeine in the e-liquid. According to the site, you get [...]

Originally posted: Something a Little Different: VapeDudes eJolt Caffeine e-Liquid

First time users can save 40% with code vapedudes and repeat customers can save 25% using my exclusive code: STEVEK

Ok, What’s the Deal?

As I mentioned in the intro, eJolt comes by default with no nicotine. The company recently added an option to add nicotine to the liquid for a small charge.

Might as well get this out of the way. I am in no way any sort of medical-type person, so on a scale to no biggie to Norman Bates, I have no idea how crazy adding nicotine into the mix is (or vaping caffeine to begin with). Do so at your own peril

Anyway, I got mine before the option to add nicotine in existed, so the juice I’m sampling is nic free. There’s actually not a very high amount of caffeine in the e-liquid. According to the site, you get about 15mg per 10 puffs. That’s actually less than a decaf coffee, believe it or not.

Of course you don’t inhale your cuppa joe, no matter how fast you drink it. Plus, you’re likely going to take way more than 10 puffs (I guess that’s about one cigarette’s worth).

The eJolt line is also a touch more expensive than the typical nicotine e-liquid from the Vape Dudes. A 10ml bottle will cost about a buck and a half more than the regular stuff.

In all reality, unless you want to be shakier than one of those yappy dogs with a nervous condition, you’ll probably use the eJolt a lot less than traditional e-liquid.

Does it Work?

I intake a stupid amount of coffee on a daily basis. So I’m pretty used to nicotine. I attempted a little experiment one morning by replacing my coffee with vaping eJolt.

That didn’t really work out too well. I apparently need e-Coffee, because I couldn’t go without at least that first cup in the morning. After that I used the eJolt in combination with regular nicotine e-liquid (I’m not giving up coffee AND nicotine on the same morning!)

It seemed like I could cruise along alright using the e-liquid, but nothing stood out as particularly buzzy about this stuff.

Interestingly, I’m writing this review at night and using the eJolt as I write it. I definitely feel like I’ve got a pretty good cafeine buzz going. I’m going to guess that I’ll be having a hard time sleeping in a couple of hours.

Bottom line seems to be that it does actually provide the stimulant effect. I also think that it’s a case of trial and error to find out what sort of vaping patterns would work for you if you’re interested in trying it. I don’t think I would load up on the nicotine version and use it as an all day vape.

Too Long; Didn’t Read

Vape Dudes now has a line of e-liquid called eJolt. The e-liquid replaces nicotine with caffeine (or you can have both). You can get it in all their regular flavors and vape your morning cup of coffee. Pick some up at VapeDudes.com.

Ecigs Have to be Better for you than Fried Twinkies

Over in Utah, the County Fair Advisory Board is trying to figure out whether or not to allow a vendor to sell e-cigarettes at the fair. According to this article, the board is unclear on whether or not e-cigarettes are a tobacco product and fall under the general sales ban. The board is also unsure if vaping would fall under the smoking guidelines.

What’s the EU up to?

The Cyprus Mail ran an article Sunday that helpfully urged people to give up e-cigarettes (and by inference take up smoking). The article’s premise behind this call to action was because local officials weren’t bothering to inspect e-liquid coming into the country. The article points out that at the moment the EU is urging member states to take care of e-cigarettes on their own. However, the EU may be considering taking the matter up.

“The electronic cigarette is not regulated by the (EU) Directive for tobacco products and doesn’t fall within the provisions of this directive,” Christou explained. “The European Commission is aware of the fact that it isn’t included there and is asking that the matter is discussed so it is regulated legally, because at this moment, every country has its own national law.”

See, so they just need a unified policy. I’m sure it’ll be fine. It’s not like the EU banned another lower harm smoking alternative despite having no scientific basis to do so.

Oh, right.

Here’s hoping the EU is too busy with finance to get to the e-cigarette thing.

Acquisitions, who’s Next?

One of the best sources I’ve seen for e-cigarette industry analysis is the convenience store industry publications. CS News has come out with a new article. The article talks about how it feels ecigs are poised for growth. They also briefly mention that there’s some suspicion RJ Reynolds is doing a little shopping for an electronic cigarette company of its own.

The interest from major tobacco companies could be a driving a force behind the positive attitude toward e-cigs. Last month, Lorillard Inc. became the first of the big three tobacco giants to enter the e-cig arena with itsacquisition of blu ecigs for $135 million, as CSNews Online previously reported. In addition there is speculation that Reynolds American Inc. will be the next to make a move, according to Bonnie Herzog, managing director, beverage, tobacco and consumer research at Wells Fargo Securities.

The article also mentions that analysts believe there will be some consolidation in the industry. I’m sure that will happen as well. I only hope it’s consolidation and not homogenization as a result of big tobacco acquisitions and FDA regulations.

Encouraging new Study

This past Wednesday, the Vape Team did a live interview with Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos a cardiologist from Greece. The doctor conducted a study to observe the cardiovascular effects of vaping as compared to cigarette smokers. The video is quite long, and the doctor’s presentation begins at the 34:00 mark.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=poOP9skjaxM

This is fascinating and well worth the watch. The doc also spent some time talking about why the FDA’s approach is wrong and they should be thinking “harm reduction” instead of “abstinence.” Among other gems, he referred to nicotine replacement therapy as “rubbish” and was also critical of some of the claims such as antifreeze.

The study is very positive and finds what we pretty much know. There is little harm caused by e-cigarettes and they are certainly easier on the cardiovascular system than traditional smokes.

Fresh Faces in the eCig Bloggosphere

Our friends over at the Ashtray Blog put up a new post today highlighting some of the new vaping blogs that are out there. This is a sort of followup post to their best vaping blogs article a while back (which had an excellent selection of blogs if I do say so myself). I’m not sure why anyone would want to listen to anybody but me But if you do, check out some of the sites highlighted in that post to get a sampling of some of the new voices (and seasoned veterans) online.

I have had the pleasure of talking with many of the people behind a lot of these blogs in the post. They are all genuinely nice people interested in expanding the community. I’m sure some will fall by the wayside in the next months while others will flourish. Be sure to check them out so that they’ll be inspired to keep going!

Yet More Industry Analysis

iStock Analyst published an article about the e-cigarette industry. The article examined the industry from an investment standpoint and talked about the market growth and the industry’s fragmentation. Beyond talking about the blu acquisition, it also picked up on a patent dispute with Ruyan.

On the downside, the barriers to entry in to the market seems to be higher. On April 23, two days before its announced acquisition by Lorillard, blu ecigs settled a patent dispute with Hong Kong-based Dragonite/Ruyan who reportedly owns the exclusive patent rights to specific high quality e-cigarette technologies internationally. The settlement grants blu ecigs use of Dragonite’s patent without further disruption in exchange for an undisclosed amount and continuing royalty.

“This settlement immediately raises the question if the barriers to entry in the e-cigarette market are higher than many currently believe,” UBS analyst Nik Modi wrote in a note to clients.

With only a handful of patents in the industry, to compete legally, smaller players may need to pay for licenses.

I have heard rumors previously that Ruyan was putting some pressure on smaller companies through other vendors. Basically the distributor in China was supposedly telling the US vendor they had to get a license from Ruyan before they could buy stock. When talking to a representative from the manufacturer in question, the were unable to corroborate this (hence no news story). I wonder if there might be some truth behind that after all.

The Johnson Creek Vea’s Design

While the Vea sort of resembles your run-of-the-mill eGo e-cigarette, there are quite a few differences. According to the company, the Vea spent about a year in the design process. During that year, the company took input from its employees and other regular e-cigarette users and incorporated it into the design.

The result is a device that was built from the ground up to complement the company’s Smoke Juice offerings. The idea was to build something where all the different parts work together for a great experience.

From an aesthetic standpoint, I think they certainly reached that goal. The Vea is just a good-looking e-cigarette. The main color is a sort of deep red with silver accents.

The entire device from the battery to the cartomizer and cone match the color scheme well. Logos are absolutely minimalist with a monotone oak tree logo on the battery that blends in so well, it’s almost hard to see.

Along with the color scheme goes the texture of Johnson Creek’s Vea. JCOSJ wanted to do a non-slip surface on the e-cigarette. I’ve seen plenty of eGos that have a similar rubberized finish, but there’s something about the way Johnson Creek does it that makes it feel more refined.

Rather than feeling like a coating, the entire device has a sort of satin feel to it. The feel is still very much metallic. The texture not only covers the battery, but also the cone as well further lending to the very finished feel of the device.

Battery and Cone.

Beyond the looks, there are a few marquee features on the battery itself. While not exactly new, the 3 click on/off switch is always a nice feature, as is USB pass through charging.

I hate carrying around those little e-cigarette chargers to be honest, so I’m a big fan of USB pass-through charging. Just unscrew the cap and plug in a mini-USB cable to charge. The e-cigarette still functions while charging, so you can use it as a true pass-through device.

Unlike eGo pass-throughs, the charger port is recessed allowing the end cap to sit nearly flush. There is also a red LED light by the USB port. This light serves two purposes.

First, as you might imagine it lights up to let you know it’s charging. But it also lights up when you press the button. This makes more sense, when you note the end cap has a V logo cutout.

When you vape, the end will light up with a red “V”. This is likely a feature that some will love and others will hate. There doesn’t seem to be a way to disable that feature.

While I’m an eGo comparison kick, I’ll also mention that the Vea is a bit more zaftig than your every day eGo e-cigarette. The Vea is a little taller and fatter than a 650 mAh eGo despite both having the same mAh rating.

Finishing off the bottom of the battery section of the device are a couple of holes near the end cap. These are vent holes that would allow outgassing should there be some sort of catastrophic battery failure. These are in addition to typical safety features like vents at the top of the battery and weak endpoints.

The top of the battery features oversized air slots at the cartomizer connector. Under the battery connector is a silicone ring. This ring provides friction to hold the cone in place.

The slide-on battery cone (one of the unique features of the device) works well. The fit is snug and the cone doesn’t readily come off.

The cone is both there to make things look pretty and help with performance. Using the device without the cone, the draw seems a bit looser which does seem to reduce vapor production a tiny amount.

Vea Cartomizers

Much like the rest of the Vea, the cartomizers are also a little different from similar commodity gear. On the surface, the cartos sport the same color scheme as the rest of the electronic cigarette. For the technically inclined, the cartomizers meter in at 2.0Ω

The one thing you can see from the outside of the carto is the end-cap. Unlike most cartomizers, the rubber end cap has a little ridge that sticks up. This allows for (theoretically) easier filling.

I’m sort of clumsy, so for me, it’s still easier to jam a paper clip in there to pull the cap off. The idea was to make it easier to just pop the top and add more e-liquid into the carto. Interestingly, the end cap has a small tube that protrudes into the cartomizer’s air tube.

Peering into the cartomizer, the air tube appears to be somewhat wider than typical cartomizers. There also appears to be a little less filler material than I’m used to. That would explain why these cartomizers only hold 1ml despite being a fairly long cartomizer.

Filling is a little tricky because there’s not a lot of room to drip with such a large air tube. Johnson Creek recommends a specialized tip they have available on their site. You could also use a needle tip bottle, syringe, or that neat cartomizer injector I reviewed a while ago.

Documentation and Warranty

Before I talk about my experience, I wanted to mention some stuff I generally don’t spend a lot of time on. Mostly I don’t talk in-depth about the documentation or warranty because it can vary widely by vendor. Since JCOSJ is the only vendor here, and I think their stuff is actually pretty good, I’m going to mention it.

First, the documentation is by far some of the best I’ve seen. Not only is it not some broken English pamphlet that may or may not be relevant to the product, it’s actually darn good.

The manual has good illustrations throughout and of course information on the basic use. It also goes beyond that including instructions on refilling the cartomizer and things like how to troubleshoot and clear a flooded cartomizer.

The warranty is good too. I’m sure there are a lot of vendors who offer warranties that are as good as better, but a couple of things caught my eye. First, the warranty covers the batteries for six months which is pretty rare for midrange class devices.

Even more interesting is that they’ll cover return shipping if you ever do need to send something back provided you meet their RMA guidelines. I can’t tell you how many things I never returned just because I didn’t want to pay return postage.

Using the Johnson Creek Vea

Ok, so the Vea was designed to all work in perfect harmony and looks like a cohesive unit. The question is does that actually translate into performance.

The answer is generally yes. I opted for pre-filled cartomizers to get the full experience, but I also used other e-liquid and didn’t notice that anything really changed using Johnson creek stuff especially.

Speaking in generic terms, the Vea performs pretty decently. It’s perhaps not the most high performance device out there in the midrange class, especially with devices like the Twist on the market now.

However, I sort of get what Johnson Creek was going for here. This kit is designed as a complete solution. They weren’t exactly looking for something that would work well with every other piece of hardware out there.

In fact, you can’t even use eGo specific cartomizers without an adapter because it lacks eGo threads, not being an eGo and all.

The point is that it should work well on its own, which it does. I’m actually sort of fascinated by how well it works in concert. I tried to test the voltage output, but like eGo devices, it uses pulse modulation to regulate the voltage so I couldn’t get a reading.

Based on using other cartomizers (510 threaded stuff works fine) it seems like the voltage is a little low on the Vea. The Vea is listed at 3.7v, but it is likely outputting something closer to an eGo at 3.4 or so.

Despite the lower voltage, the vapor is quite warm coming out of the Vea. That won’t happen with a regular eGo. Flavor and throat hit are also pretty good, and more pronounced that I would expect.

Too Long; Didn’t Read

The Johnson Creek Vea e-cigarette is an absolutely gorgeous and solid e-cigarette. The device is geared toward the midrange of the market: people who want to move beyond a mini e-cigarette, but aren’t looking for some of the more complicated solutions out there. It performs pretty well if you want to stay on the rails and keep everything simple. If you like to experiment with a lot of different hardware, this may not be the best choice in the world. You can purchase one from Johnson Creek.

And now I will turn it over to Jesse. — Steve K. Honey Cured Out of all the flavors Pink Spot Vapors has to offer there is one I keep coming back to again and again, and one that I miss the most when it is absent from my e-liquid line up for too long.. Groans of “Honey Cuuuuurred!! Hooooney Cuuuuured!!! Wherefore art thou, Honey Cured!..” Can be heard echoing from my bedroom walls during a restless nights slumber awaiting the arrival of this yet to be rivaled Honey Cured Tobacco flavored vape. I’m always longing for it to fill the confines of my cartomizer with its tangy, ever so slightly & pleasantly bitter, subtle honey sweetness. This bouquet is backed by a truly hard to come by, realistic, delicately dry tobacco flavor that blends together to make this a constant companion in any coupling of flavors on any given day, for any and all occasions.. I find it also mixes well with other PSV juices, as well as juices from other vendors. In all my taste testing endeavors I’ve never found a juice quite like it, nor any juice that balances out a vape pouch full of sweet juices quite so well.. Flavor This may not be a juice for beginners, since upon receiving my very first sample pack this flavor was a tad off-putting and dryer than what I was looking for at the time and I favored their regular Tobacco, USA blend, and RY8 tobacco blends.
Flavor

This may not be a juice for beginners, since upon receiving my very first sample pack this flavor was a tad off-putting and dryer than what I was looking for at the time and I favored their regular Tobacco, USA blend, and RY8 tobacco blends. It did however always quench the urge to go back to analogs during the early stages of my efforts to quit smoking [:)]

After awhile my palette would get far too accustomed to sweet and/or smooth flavors, and found myself returning again and again to Honey Cured Tobacco to awaken my taste buds for more sugary abuse.

This e-liquid is quite thin, which makes filling cartomizers a breeze, though drippers may find adding just a little VG to the mix by hand a little less likely for it to move so quickly to their battery connection. In addition, adding a touch of VG may satisfy those looking for a bit thicker visual cloud of vapor on the exhale. That is not to say this e-liquid is a slouch in the vapor production category, it holds up to any 50/50 PG/VG blend I’ve ever vaped, even on par and in some cases surpasses 60% VG juices that for whatever reason are shy on the visual vapor production.

This rings true for the specific top coil cartomizers I prefer on a variable voltage device, as well as on an ego style battery with a low resistance 306 atomizer on which the flavor, vapor production, and throat hit all hold firm.

The Hardware Part of the Review

I’d go so far as to say this juice shines on an eGo with a low resistance atty, when other juices fail to give up their nuances on anything outside of a variable voltage device at above 3.7, I find this juice shines anywhere from 3.4 well into the upper 4′s, and I detect the first hints of a burnt flavor around 4.9-5volts.

I rarely push sweet juices very far above 4 volts as they have a tendency to burn, making this juice a great choice both for weaker batteries and for those looking for a juice they can push to hotter, more analog comparable temperatures.

Last but not least would be the matter of throat and/or nasal hit. As you may or may not know, exhaling through the nose in part or even entirely may improve ones ability to taste a specific vapor’s various flavor notes.

One can also bypass the need to inhale vapor into the lungs at all by taking a drag then blowing the vapor out through your nose straight away like puff the magic dragon lol.. This will give a “nasal hit” which can be every bit as pleasant as a throat hit (dependent on personal preference) and does a pretty good job at absorbing nicotine through the nasal passages as well.

That being said and any lessons in the finer points of vaping aside, Honey Cured Tobacco e-liquid is not shy on the throat hit and has an especially pleasant and distinctive nasal exhale that should really be experienced in order to be best understood.

Conclusion

It never fails to give me that satisfaction in the inhale or exhale and leaves a dry, bold, but not overpowering aftertaste with no lingering, funky, or bad breath experiences once the PV is set down for a spell.. or rather IF it gets set down.. I’m currently looking for a beer helmet alternative to vaping so I can do all manner of things while still enjoying a hands free vape at the drop of a hat, so to speak..

Well there you have it, one very long, very thorough e-juice review. I’d like to take some time to review my other Pink Spot Vapors go to vapes, as there are many worth reviewing therein. I will however consider giving spotlight to the several other wonderful vendors I’ve sampled as well as some new up and comers, choosing a juice from each that sticks out amongst the bunch as my personal favorite and worthy of praise.

Submitted humbly for your approval and for the potential betterment of the greater vaping community at large. Be proud to be a vaper, and take any and all vaping scrutiny in stride and a big ole grain of salt.

Much love yall, vape on!

-Jesse B.

New from Steve K's Vaping World:

Welcome to the second e-cigarette news roundup of the week. Don’t worry, I’m still getting used to the schedule myself. Today’s roundup takes us around the world. From the USA with NASCAR and the FDA to India’s Bollywood scene and the UK we’ll travel following e-cigarette news. Return your tray tables and seats to the upright position as we descend into some e-cigarette news. UK Vendor Doing Well for Itself Local UK news site Peterborough Today ran a puff piece on a local e-cigarette company that has grown from a side project to a multi-million pound business. The article highlighted the company’s success and how it is moving up to a 10,000 square foot facility from its humble beginnings in a space 1/10th the size. The company attributed some if its success to its deep catalog of e-liquid flavors.

UK Vendor Doing Well for Itself

Local UK news site Peterborough Today ran a puff piece on a local e-cigarette company that has grown from a side project to a multi-million pound business. The article highlighted the company’s success and how it is moving up to a 10,000 square foot facility from its humble beginnings in a space 1/10th the size. The company attributed some if its success to its deep catalog of e-liquid flavors.

To add variety for those looking to kick the habit, more than 200 flavours are available, ranging from tobacco and menthol to fruit-based flavours, French tarts, gummy bears, cream soda, cherry cola and tiramisu.

There’s another anecdotal bit of evidence to demonstrate that flavored e-liquid isn’t some evil plot to hook kids. Turns out that grownups don’t particularly like the taste of licking an ashtray if there are alternatives. Go figure.

Greensmoke Starts its Engines

e-Cigarette company Greensmoke announced in a recent press release that it will be once again using NASCAR to promote its brands. Greensmoke will be sponsoring the number 32 car driven by Bobby Bell in the Coca Cola 600 on May 27th. The release also made mention that the company is working on expanding its retail presence.

“Our partnership with Green Smoke was one of the highlights of last season,” states Bell. “They’re growing at a tremendous rate and are going to be moving into some big national chain stores this year. They’ve picked the perfect market to promote their revolutionary product and I’m proud to be driving with their logo on the car.”

Retail is of course a goal for most e-cigarette brands as of late. Most likely they are trying to get ahead of theFDA’s plans to begin more severely regulating e-cigarettes. I wonder if this might be the last NASCAR sponsorship since the FDA disallows sponsorships of sporting events by cigarette manufacturers.

Bollywood Goes Vaping

Let me start by saying, I’m not very familiar with Bollywood, so if I get something horribly wrong here, I pray you will forgive me. Health India came out with a story about Bollywood star Sonam Kapoor endorsing e-cigarettes on social media. It’s rather odd because I’ve seen several stories out of India that are less than fond of e-cigarettes.

Smoking’s not cool and Bollywood finally seems to have woken up to that harsh reality. Recently, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor went on record registering her support for electronic cigarettes. She posted on a micro-blogging website, “Smoking is seriously not good! There are electric cigs available now. A lot of my friends are using it.” Now e-cigarettes are one of the most successful nicotine replacement therapies. Sonam Kapoor added that she felt it was hypocritical that the government which took such stringent measures to curb smoking on screen fails to do so in the real world. (Image: HealthIndia.com)

The thing that’s interesting here is that there are a lot of US celebs who also vape. So much so that I sort of stopped bothering to cover them. However, it seems like only a handful go out of their way to really evangelize the devices. Celebs that spring to mind are Carrie Fisher, Rush Limbaugh and Katherine Heigl

Better to be Killed by the Known than Saved by the Unknown?

Regular readers of this site are familiar with the name Dr. Michael Siegel. Here’s yet another news item where you’ll hear the name. This time Dr. Siegel ran a blog post blasting the FDA’s information web page about e-cigarettes. He (sarcastically) points out the folly of the FDA recommending against the unknowns in e-cigarettes when the danger or low efficacy of alternatives are known.

“We urge smokers not to use electronic cigarettes because unlike regular cigarettes, it is not known whether e-cigarettes are safe for their intended use, it is not known what types of potentially harmful chemicals are found in these products, and it is not known how much nicotine they are inhaling when using these products. Thus, with electronic cigarettes, you get a bunch of unknowns. But with regular cigarettes, you get a sure thing. We know exactly how unsafe these products are for their intended use. We also know thousands of the harmful chemicals that are found in cigarettes. And to boot, the consumer knows exactly how much nicotine he or she is getting because those levels are tightly controlled by the tobacco industry.

Note that the image attached to the quote with the clearly impossible e-cigarette charger didn’t come from the blog post. That image came directly from the FDA page referenced by the blog post. If the FDA can’t even provide the public the right image of an e-cigarette charging, you have to ask what else they got wrong.

Deal of the Moment

MyFreedomSmokes is at it again. This time they are not only running a coupon code on DIY flavoring (code DIY15) but they also have the eGo Stardust cartos in stock for a great price. You can read my review of those cartos here. The new models in feature longer wicks for easier use and can be had for 5.95 each or a 4-pack for $20.95.

The fact this is a standard USB hub works out in its favor. Primarily, because that means the multi adapter can no only be used for e-cigarette chargers, but it can also work for data devices like USB thumb drives and iPhones. It also means that unlike some of the multi-chargers out there that used to be popular for a specific style of e-cigarettes, you can mix and match the types of ecigs you charge just by plugging in the proper adapter. Mix and match 510, KR808 and eGo devices if you want, just don’t mix up the chargers!
The Smoker’s Halo USB multi adapter is billed as an adapter that will let you plug in up to four e-cigarette chargers to charge up four ecigs at once. The reality is that this device isn’t specific to e-cigarette markets. It is a regular USB hub.

The fact this is a standard USB hub works out in its favor. Primarily, because that means the multi adapter can no only be used for e-cigarette chargers, but it can also work for data devices like USB thumb drives and iPhones.

Design

The ECigarette Direct adapter is set up sort of like an electrical power strip. The device is sort of a long rectangle with the four USB slots arranged in a row. The USB cable to connect to your computer is attached to the cord similar to a power cord on a surge protector.

The most unusual feature of this adapter also carries on the surge protector motif. At the top of the device there’s a red on/off rocker switch. This is unusual for a USB hub, but a great feature for e-cigarette chargers. The switch will allow you to kill power to the USB chargers if you don’t want them running when you can’t keep an eye on them.

The adapter also has a small port on the side to attach an AC power adapter (not included) if you need to give the multi-adapter a power boost.

More Power!

For optimal results, if you’re going to charge more than one thing at once, you will want a USB output that can provide sufficient power to the attached devices.

Ideally, you’ll want a USB port that outputs at least 2 amps of current. Not all PCs are created equally. Some have no ports that provide this much power, while others only have one “high power port. For example on a Macbook, the high power port is the one closest to the laptop’s power connection.

You might have to break out the old manual or ask your weird cousin who works in an IT department somewhere to figure out which port you should use the adapter on. Otherwise, you’ll have to find an outboard AC adapter. One small problem there: there are no markings on the multi adapter indicating what type of AC adapter you will need.

Another option is you can use an AC to USB adapter if one came with your e-cigarette kit. You’ll just want to make sure it can supply enough power. Naturally, that solution would only give power and no connectivity to your computer.

Performance

As I hinted at during the who’s it for section, I found this adapter to be incredibly useful. My normal ride when working on this site and doing most of my e-cigarette “stuff” is an iMac. iMacs are notorious for having only 3 USB ports. I’m constantly swapping out between ecig chargers, USB sticks, my iPhone and so on.

As soon as I got this adapter, I pretty much plugged everything into it I could. I also expected it not to work due to lack of power.

I plugged in a standard e-cigarette charger (one of the company’s, it only seemed fair), another charger for an eGo model, my SD USB card reader and my iPhone. The iPhone was the last device since I was convinced that would be the one that broke everything.

To my great surprise, everything worked fine. The phone synced, data transferred from the memory card and the electronic cigarettes charged. Not only that, but I didn’t have any unplugged USB devices lying around any more.

I suppose I can’t really say much else about performance. This is one of these things that either works or doesn’t work.

Too Long; Didn’t Read

The Smoker’s Halo USB Multi Adapter from Ecigarette Direct works. It lets you hook up four electronic cigarette chargers (or any other USB device) at the same time and provides power, assuming your computer’s USB port can support it. The added on/off switch is a nice feature that allows you to cut the power to your chargers once they’ve done the job. You can buy one at ECigarette Direct.

Despite the delay, there were still only a handful of news stories in the last few days. One of which I had to sort of come up with on my own. Without further ado, I present you with the Tuesday news roundup!

Return of a Vaping Mainstay

I wrote a story a while back, more of a rant, about Steeljan closing up her virtual YouTube shop amid a storm of what she felt to be threatening responses to her videos and opinions. I thought I would just take the time here to mention that she has returned and restored all of her previously deleted videos. I’ll just leave this video about troubleshooting mods here for your viewing pleasure.

I’m just going to come right out and say this. I don’t normally report on the inside baseball stuff within the e-cig “community” very often. I feel that sort of thing doesn’t carry a lot of weight with a majority of the readers of this site. However, since I wrote about the original event, I felt it my responsibility to follow-up on that article. Plus I wanted to say welcome back

blu Takeover Analysis UK Style

The UK ECigarette Consumers Association (ECCA) wrote a short blog piece about the recent takeover of blu by big tobacco company Lorillard. The piece didn’t dive so much into any political implications, but rather market ones. blu Cigs already has a small presence in the UK which the ECCA expects will expand.

My prediction is that knowing that Walmart in the States already stock a line of disposables of the Blu brand, we may very well see Blu soon on the shelves of our local Asda supermarket. It is common knowledge that Asda has been owned and run by Walmart for some time now. If I’m right I see this as a great step towards the acceptance and awareness of the electronic cigarette and a giant leap along the idea diffusion curve, we will soon see the electronic cigarette culture go past the phase of early adoption and become common place as a form of tobacco harm reduction.

I think an aggressive expansion of the company’s already retail presence is a foregone conclusion at this point. The UK isn’t quite up against the same barriers of regulation we in the states are with the impending FDA regulations. Therefore, this may be more of a positive move in other countries where there’s not a threat of vital components like flavor and e-liquid being regulated out of the market.

Also in the UK

In a press release, UK e-cigarette company E-Lites announced the results of an informal survey it recently ran. The survey which queried around 1000 people asked about attitudes toward e-cigarettes. The results found that people both wanted the devices to be more widely available, but more information should be made available.

Some 36 per cent of survey respondents said electronic cigarettes should be more accessible to smokers, while 43 per cent agreed in principle that the recent introduction of the products represented good news for smokers. However, 47 per cent said they didn’t know enough about e-cigarettes to give an opinion, which supports calls for more education about the products’ benefits for smokers.

63% of respondents identified themselves as non-smokers. No mention was made about the percentage that vaped. I’d also to be interested to see how the 47% broke down as far as whether they thought e-cigarettes should be made more widely available. It might tell if the UK has a similar ban what we don’t understand attitude to the US.

“Special travel case”

Starter Kits

The first thing you might have noticed is that I put the phrase special travel case in quotes above there. That’s to point out, this is not the charging case. Rather Bullsmoke is referring to the box in which the kit comes. It’s a good quality heavy cardboard box with magnetic latches and cutouts for all the stuff. But, this is fairly typical packaging for most kits.

One other interesting thing I noticed is that while the company sells both shorty and manual batteries separately, the only battery option in the kit is the standard auto battery.

All Bullsmoke batteries of any ilk have the same color and graphic design scheme. The batteries are white with thin stripes running down the battery to simulate the look of cigarette paper. Each battery features the company’s vaping bull logo at the base.

Similarly, the only LED color choice is orange. This of course has no impact at all on the performance of the e-cigarette. However, it’s a personal pet peeve of mine, I dislike LEDs that might make over zealous mall security guards think I’m smoking an actual cigarette.

Choices improve dramatically in the refill cartridges department. For starters both of Bullsmoke’s starter kits come with 10, rather than 5, refills (cartomizers). While the Ranch Hand kit sticks to more traditional tobaccos, the City Slicker kit offers a more diverse choice.

The cartomizers in the Bullsmoke City Slicker do offer a couple of tobacco flavors, but also branch out into other flavors like coffee and grape. I fell in love with the apple flavor myself, it’s a nice tart apple flavor reminiscent of a fresh granny smith apple. But I digress.

The other cool part about the included cartomizers is they are color coded. While this is generally a plus in my mind, sporting the grape cartridge which is very purple sort of throws off the old-west tough guy mystique with which I keep trying to associate Bullsmoke.

The Technology

Here’s the part of the Bullsmoke Review where I talk geeky terms about thread patterns and voltage and stuff. Since I know that the target customer for kits like that may or may not be that into the technical stuff, I’ll try to keep the nerd-speak to a minimum here.

The e-cigarettes used in the Bullsmoke kits is a KR808D-1 style. This is a term that refers to the size and style of connector between battery and cartomizer (more on cartomizers in a second). There’s more to it than that, each style tends to have certain characteristics such as battery voltage and regulation and so on.

The batteries also feature some of the newest technology, which is a sealed connection. Normally automatic batteries have a hole in the top of them to allow the switch to be activated when you take a puff. This works great, but should any liquid seep out of your cartomizer and into the battery, it could damage the battery.

Sealed batteries somehow still allow the airflow to activate the e-cigarette, but lack the big hole in the middle of the battery connector. This minimizes the odds of damage from leakage.

Suffice it to say the KR808 style is a fairly popular one in this class of e-cigarettes. The batteries are 180mAh, which refers to the size of the cells. Again, this is pretty standard with this style of e-cigarette.

As I mentioned several times, the Bullsmoke gear uses cartomizers rather than separate cartridges and atomizers. The short story is I feel cartomizers are better, especially in starter kits than atomizers. They perform better and aren’t as messy.

The Bullpen Charging Case

The Bullpen is a case that houses its own battery and allows you to charge one of your e-cigarette batteries on the go. Simply stick the battery in the case, hold down the button for a few seconds to start charging and then toss it in your pocket.

A case like this is fantastic for people who may not always be around a computer or wall outlet for charging. If you’re out on the town, you have a freshly charged battery ready to go when your first one putters out.

To be honest, I’ve reviewed this case before. The Bullpen charging case is the same case as Smokeless Image’s Volt personal charging case.

The good news is that it’s also my favorite portable charging case. It’s a very compact and sleek-looking case. The case is about the size of an audio cassette (I just dated myself there, didn’t I?)

The replaceable battery in the charging case will recharge one of your e-cigarette batteries around three or four times. Charge time is around 3-4 hours.

A word of warning, the top doesn’t flip up, rather it slides open. Don’t try to force it, or bad things might happen.

The only downside of the case is that it is a separate purchase and not included with any of the standard Bullsmoke starter kits.

Performance

As I mentioned a bunch of times already, the Bullpen uses pretty standard KR808 batteries. This is important because I feel that the 808s are probably the best performing styles as far as traditional cigarette sized devices go.

Especially on a freshly charged battery, these e-cigarettes produce a good amount of thick vapor. The temperature is good, not too warm, nor cold. Throat hit is also very good, when you vape, you know you’re inhaling something with these.

Flavor of course is subjective. With the City Slicker I’m sure you’ll find flavors you love as well as ones that you detest. I thought the apple was great, and the grape was pretty decent. I only tried one of the tobaccos, the Texas. I found it to be on the sweet side, but not terribly unpleasant.

While on the subject of the cartomizers, here’s one thing to note. Like pretty much everyone, Bullsmoke exaggerates the equivalency when it comes to how long a cartomizer lasts.

Bullsmoke claims the equivalent of 25 cigarettes. I’ve found that at first, this might only be slightly high, but as you sort of get into a routine with vaping, you’ll find you take longer drags, which lowers that equivalency pretty quick.

A more realistic count is probably somewhere between 7-15 cigarettes depending on how you roll.

Battery life is sort of the same deal. The company claims somewhere between 3 hours and a day (or more). I’m a pretty heavy user, so I tend to blow through one of the batteries in less than two hours. Light users will probably still go through two battery charges in a day.

Too Long; Didn’t Read

The Bullsmoke City Slicker kit is a typical and competent basic e-cigarette starter kit. The biggest draw of the company’s offering is the City Slicker kit which gives you 10 different pre-filled cartomizers to sample the company’s flavor offerings. The company also sells one of my favorite portable charging cases, a must for people on the go or out on the town. You can check out Bullsmoke’s site here.
