This is a 20min Youtube video of John Paul Caponigro giving a talk at TEDx in Maine on the topic of creativity and why he thinks all humans are inherently creative. The premise that as we grow up we learn to be less creative is interesting. I remember being much more creative when keeping myself occupied during summer breaks when I was a kid. Today I am struggling with how hard it can be let those creative tendencies come out to play in my photographic endeavours.

This seems like it could be a very handy thing to have prepared when you are traveling to remote destinations. I’ll very likely setup one of these calendars next time I travel to South Florida for some warm weather shooting.

While it was cheap to buy film to shoot in this camera, at the time I couldn’t really afford to get the film developed very often. Somewhere I have a bunch of rolls of film that need to be developed, but likely never will be. Perhaps this is part of the reason I am so bad at processing and finishing my digital images today? Maybe if I’d been smarter I’d have gone the B&W route and learned to develop the negatives myself.

The Pentax ZX-M pictured here to the right was my second SLR. I purchased it brand new after moving to Atlanta and before my first trip to California, so sometime in early 2000. I enjoyed using this camera quite a bit. Today it looks like it just came out of the box (which I still have) but is missing the eye cover piece. I could never manage to keep these on any of my Pentax cameras and I’ve managed to lose most of them, if not all.

The Pentax MZ-3 pictured to the left was my first auto focus capable SLR. I purchased this one used from B&H somewhere in between 2002-2004 as I recall. The auto focusing capability was really something special for me, I felt I had made a big leap forward in technology. It didn’t hurt that I was then able to use a feature of the best lens I had at the time. After I purchased this camera I really started getting more into my hobby and I decided to make the switch to a digital SLR. It was purely a cost saving measure I told myself. Going the digital route would allow me to shoot infinitely more photos than I could compared to the cost of film and processing. And it did work

Planning for this upcoming photo stroll got me to thinking more about shooting with film. I’ve never developed my own negatives before, so as a pet project for this year, I am going to learn how to do so. I doubt that I’ll get to the point of making my own prints (the old fashioned way), but I do plan to scan the negatives into my computer. Perhaps some prints will come out of this via my Epson printer? You never know until you try. I’m expecting it will be a fun and rewarding project.
