Deregulation in 1980 was the ground breaking birth of Stevens Transport and big changes to trucking. A glance at our history may surprise you. Once upon a time Stevens Transport was operating with 3 employees in an office suite in Mesquite Texas. The company owned 3 trucks and had 6 owner operators leased on. Stevens Transport had their equipment leased to the C&H Company which at that time was one of the largest trucking companies in North America. Mr. Aaron, the owner noticed a few areas of concern and in event to protect his drivers went to have a heart to heart with a dispatcher at C&H to identify and correct the problem. The dispatcher did not appear concerned about the issue and kindly told Mr. Aaron” if he did not like his pathway at C&H to take his business elsewhere”. That day Mr. Aaron returned to his office, early 1980, less than 8 months after beginning his career in trucking, and applied for 48 state authority. This was the inauguration of Stevens Transport.

The controlled growth came year after year. Cautious planning, superb vision and leadership by Mr. Aaron, coupled with precise execution enabled Stevens to gain ground. In 1985 we relocated to our first home of 7 acres on highway 80 in Mesquite TX. We outgrew this facility quickly and as deregulation progressed the large companies who controlled the industry slowly felt the competition moving in at all angles. C&H went bankrupt in the late 80s and the place we call home today is the old C&H facility. We relocated to our permanent home in May 1992, Memorial Day weekend. The story came full circle for Stevens Transport. Never did we imagine we would take over the site where we began 30 years ago. How would we fill this 47 acre site? This was the concern. Once again we prevailed and in fact in the late 90s we began to add office and shop space as well as additional acreage to accommodate our growth. Today we sit on 62 acres and continue to forecast and plan our future, expanding our transport services into truckload, intermodal, international and logistics management.

The philosophy of hiring and retaining the best employees and giving them the tools they need to meet and exceed expectations was put into play early on and as a result today we are one of the leading players in the temperature controlled sector. People are at the heart of any organization and many of the people here today have been on this exciting journey with us. Look around 30 years later at the company we have become, all the changes in equipment technology and the industry as a whole. It has been a challenging yet rewarding journey that we at Stevens are very proud of. Thank you for taking the journey with us. We look forward to the next thirty years of success and all the continued challenges that will come our way. The feeling is one of confidence and together we will to strive to continue to be the BEST in the Industry.

In keeping with our commitment to providing our employees with the latest technology, we have well over 400 trucks equipped with Qualcomm Omnivision units capable of maintaining paperless logs with even more being installed in coming days.

When you consider that two of the most influential changes in the trucking industry are occurring within just a few months of one another, it is easy to understand why Stevens decided to commit to the installation of the new Qualcomm Omnivision system on our trucks.

With the implementation of CSA 2010 already underway and the soon to change FMCSA regulations regarding electronic on board recorders (EOBR’s), it just makes sense to stay ahead of the learning curve and be prepared for the challenges that come with any major changes.

Norm Ellis, Senior Vice President for Qualcomm Enterprises, says, “CSA 2010 is one of the most significant events that has ever occurred in the trucking industry, even much more so than mandating electronic logs. This will be a great mechanism to take the whole industry and improve it.”

Stevens Transport supports the goals of CSA 2010 and is working to insure that we are ready. Simplified Hours of service using electronic. As we closeout 2010 and delve into 2011, we look forward to another exiting and challenging year in the training dept.

In the last few years we have changed our training program a bit with the addition of our “Finishing” program.

Senior truck drivers and members of the Stevens staff may remember the days of the old “Trainee team” program. After completion of an initial 5 week OTR program working with an OTR trainer, two students were dispatched out together for three weeks to learn the business end of the trucking industry by utilizing hands on approach dealing with the daily duties required to run the truck.

Our Finishing program has streamlined this concept by replacing one student with a “Finishing trainer”. In this program the trainer’s role actually changes from trainer to more of a mentor or facilitators role.

Students are still required to tackle the daily duties of hauling freight, Hours of service, truck maintenance, and the business dealings of customer service and protection of the motoring public but now have an added edge. Logging eliminates the need to maintain paper logs and prevents virtually all common violations in this increasingly important area of responsibility.

Drivers using the new electronic logging system already have a great benefit in two of the seven BASICS, Unsafe driving and fatigued driving (which incorporates hours of service). Unlike the other five categories of CSA 2010, a poor rating in just one of these two can result in an overall satisfactory rating for Stevens Transport.

When our drivers are assigned to a truck that has the new Omnivision Qualcomm, he or she will receive comprehensive training including watching a video detailing daily operations as well as hands on training with one of the units. All drivers on paperless logs will receive a unique log- in and password when they come in for the training and also receive a copy of the instructions that will need to be kept in the permit book of the vehicle.

Many drivers who were initially resistant to using paperless logs are now so comfortable with the system they cannot even imagine ever using paper logs again. Most of these drivers are reporting more drive time, higher productivity, and less time spent working on logs.

As the transportation industry changes all around us, Stevens Transport is adapting to these challenges and is providing our truck drivers with the tools to also succeed. In the past this was attempted with assistance from driver managers and safety departments only via QUALCOMM or telephone. This concept is still in place but is now backed up with an on board guardian angel in the role of a finish trainer.

After some fine tuning and constant monitoring this program has worked out very well with an end result producing an average of twenty to thirty new solo drivers a week. With the help and constant support of our over the road trainers, our in house staff of driver managers and our classroom instructors; we will continue to maintain our high training standards and will always work to assure we produce New “Best in class” Stevens drivers.

William R. Cheney Jr. Director of Training
