A Stevie Nicks song takes the stage for the second time this season with the top lady singers left in the competition. After Lacey Brown's Landslide smack down last week, fearless Didi Benami interpreted Stevie's Rhiannon, which took some balls of steel if you ask me. She does in fact make the song her own, as Ellen said, although it pains me to say that because NO ONE owns Rhiannon but Stevie...but fanaticism aside, Didi did give the song her own original style.

I like my Rhiannon much more ruthless than Didi's sweet and romantic one, but that's just me. Watchoo think?

Aaaaand, when the hells is Stevie going to guest mentor or judge on Idol? Maybe after the third song cover.

True to form, Dave Stewart tweeted this audio sample demo of his new duet with Stevie Nicks, "Everybody Loves You". Something torked when he posted the snippet on Songtwit, making it unable to play. I could literally hear thousands of "Arrrgggs!" just like mine across cyberspace.

Alas, technology has us by the balls. So we waited with eager ears as Dave tried to find a new method of delivery...

This is going to be an awesome jam, no doubt. I have loved nearly every song and collaboration affiliated with Dave. So exciting.

And then I found a tweet from Stephen Christian hoping that Stevie or Bruce Springsteen will call back about singing on an Anberlin track. Wewt! I would love to hear Stevie on the harder side of rock right now. Her deeper voice is even more perfect for it. Bet there will be no breathy lyrics about sitting on the bleachers and 15 year old's fairytales on that song. *points to Taylor fackin Swift*

Seems he really wants to work with her. He even retweeted my shout out for it.

This tweet from Dave Stewart announces some very good news indeed. I love Twitter, Stevie Nicks, and Dave Stewart's songs - a triple win.

Looks like he speaks of two different subjects in the tweet. I think the TV appearance with Colbie is unrelated to the new Stevie Nicks song. The hazards of the Twitter 140, me thinks. Ack! And as I write, Dave tweets that yes, the above interpretation proves correct.

So after the buzz about Stevie producing Michelle Branch's track on the Fleetwood Mac tribute album, it so great to hear she's been writing and recording new songs, too. Halleluyer.

Dear Grammys, enough with the kooky pairings! Yes, it worked really well when you united Eminem and Elton John all those years ago. It was a true example of music bringing people together. But this year's many matches felt more like mis-mash-ups. Taylor Swift's duets with Stevie Nicks were embarrassing for both of them, and Lady Gaga's pairing with Elton John — is he now the go-to duet partner? — didn't quite jell. It was telling that the night's best songs came from Drake, Eminem, and Lil Wayne — three artists who brought out the best in each other — and Pink, who performed solo. Welcome to Top Moments, Grammy Mis-Mash-Ups Edition.

10. Best Idea: Lady Gaga opens the show with a typical (ha-ha) performance of her hit "Poker Face" in which a team of dancers adore her almost worshipfully, until she's thrown into a fire. Next we find her sitting across a piano from Elton John. Their mash-up of her "Speechless" and his "Your Song" ("How wonderful life is/With Gaga is in the world!") isn't a flawless showcase for either performer, and sets the tone for a night of unnecessarily complicated combos.

9. Best Patter: "Stay away from Katy Perry," Stephen Colbert warns his daughter from the stage. Otherwise, the Colbert Report wise guy tries to prove his coolness to his daughter by greeting all the boldfaced names in the crowd. He later informs the crowd that Susan Boyle, a "48-year-old Scottish cat lady in sensible shoes," saved the music industry this year. When he wins for Best Comedy Album, he asks his daughter, "Am I cool now?" Yes.

8. Worst Idea: Nothing says punk rock like turning your album into a Broadway musical. Except performing with the performers in that musical, as Green Day unimpressively did with the cast of American Idiot.

7. Best Stage Presence: Beyonce wears an exoskeleton-like gown accompanied by a SWAT team of backup dancers to sing "If I Were a Boy," a rough-edged version that segues into a cover of Alanis Morissette's man-hating anthem "You Oughta Know." Her defense-themed show is a brilliant offense.

6. Most Tired Trend: Robots are so now! Or so think the Black-Eyed Peas in their performance of hits "Imma Be" and "I Gotta Feeling," which feature robots in metal-man drag. If only their tin-man routine had a heart.

5. Worst Tribute: Taylor Swift stumbles through "Today Was a Fairy Tale" before inviting Stevie Nicks to the stage to butcher/duet on Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon." Just when the 35-plus crowd is ready to storm the stage and stop Swift from destroying their memories, Nicks saves the day by adding a dose of musicality to an ill-advised, slowed-down rendition of Swift's "You Belong with Me." Let the grown-up lead, kiddo.

Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks Grammys Duet: Ear Seizures Incoming

I've finally been discharged from the auditory intensive care unit. I'll try to keep a handle on my snark but, really, really? Did you see Stevie's duet with Taylor Swift, or rather Taylor's duet with Stevie?

Is your mouth a gaping hole of disbelief? I am unsure where this pairing came from - some say Taylor asked to sing with Stevie, a sweet nod; others feel it was a marketing strategy of some kind although Stevie's and Taylor's fan cups both runneth over already. In any case, they are oddly matched vocally and stylistically. "Rhiannon" was horribly off key on Swift's part and Stevie undersinging it was just unnatural. And hearing Stevie sing about mini skirts, bleachers and teen love on Swift's "You Belong With Me" was silly.

Taylor Swift Shares the Stage with Stevie Nicks at the Grammys

Little over an hour after accepting the Grammy Award for Best Country Album, comparing the win to an impossible dream, Taylor Swift took the stage at the Staples Center to perform a medley of her own tunes, as well as a song from one of her childhood heroes, who joined her onstage.

Ditching her sparkling evening gown for a more casual blouse-and-jeans combo, Swift took center stage with her guitar strapped to her shoulder for "Today Was a Fairytale." Swift then announced, "It's a fairly tale and an honor to share the stage with Stevie Nicks."

The former Fleetwood Mac singer then walked onstage. The two stood side by side, singing Fleetwood's "Rhiannon," at times a tad less harmonically than one would have hoped. Nonetheless, the women made for a compelling twosome, a portrait of two generations separated by years but drawn together by music.

Swift then grabbed her guitar for the third and final part in her medley, jumping into a twangy version of "You Belong With Me." Nicks stood back, tapping her tambourine and nodding in appreciation, every so often stepping up to the mic to share singing duties with the young artist.

At the end, Swift and Nicks embraced. It would have already been a killer night for the 20-year-old singer: Before her Best Country Album win (Fearless), she notched victories for Best Female Country Vocal Performance and Best Country Song ("White Horse"). But there's a lot more still to come, including Swift's battle for Album of the Year against Beyoncé, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and Dave Matthews Band.

Lastly, I was totally moved by Andrea Bocelli and Mary J. Blige's duet of 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' for Haiti relief. It wrecked me to tears, just beautiful. And Pink's performance was elegant, strong and the right kind of scary that makes you want to face the day by screaming "BRING IT!" out your front door. Loved it.

Well double lastly, 'Taylor Swift/Stevie Nicks is still the #1 trending Twitter topic for USA right now. I hope Stevie newbies born out of this night and some landing here from Google will watch some classic vids, like this one whereas there is no such Rhiannon shredding like we saw tonight.

So after much speculation about the context of Stevie Nicks' recently announced Grammy performance this Sunday night, it is confirmed that Taylor Swift will sing with her. *Spoiler Alert* Stevie and Taylor rehearsed "Rhiannon" and "You Belong With Me". And finally, Friday brought the chance to see Taylor Swift and Stevie Nicks collaborate in one of those moments the Grammys are known for. Swift — who has a very good shot at sweeping this year’s major categories, in my opinion — doesn’t wear her Fleetwood Mac fandom on her sleeve as a songwriter, but it is apparently there, for after running through her current single, “Today Was a Fairytale,” she used her very most dramatic voice to introduce her duet partner:

“And now, my fairytale dream comes true: I get to share a stage with Stevie Nicks.”

The two women’s voices complimented each other nicely on the harmonies of “Rhiannon,” before moving into a more awkward mandolin-fueled hoedown version of “You Belong With Me.” Never thought I’d see Stevie Nicks playing tambourine behind Taylor Swift, but that’s the magic of Music’s Biggest Night.

Soooo, what do you think of this pairing? Purely a marketing strategy or simply another duet in keeping with Grammy tendency to pair legend with up and comer recently? I personally do not dig Taylor Swift's music, but then I'm not a tween anymore. Aside from tapping the commercial appeal of Swift's legions of fans, I find it an odd match. I would much rather heard Stevie duet with Alicia Keys, especially since Alicia shared Fleetwood Mac was a great inspiration for her new album.

Stevie is grown folks music and I think I shall wince a wee bit when I see this duet. But nonetheless it's seriously cool to see her perform on the Grammys, in any case.

Stevie Nicks reckons it was the perfect end to a year on the road.

She said she was blown away by the crowd at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands during Fleetwood Mac's two New Plymouth concerts at the weekend.

The venue, the fans and even the weather added something special to the band's last two performances of their 10-month long Unleashed tour.

Although band members declined to be interviewed in person, Nicks told the Taranaki Daily News via email the audience at the Bowl was "awesome".

"The crowd was mesmerising to me because they were so in to it and having so much fun," she said.

"Of course, that kind of crowd makes such a difference to an artist."

Indeed, her fellow band member Lindsey Buckingham agreed, citing Saturday's concert one of the top five in his entire career.

It was Nicks' second time at the Bowl and the weekend's concerts exceeded the entire band's expectation.

"The fans were great, the venue was great, and the Maori welcoming ceremony after the show was truly magical," she said.

About 36,000 fans filled the Bowl to experience the veteran rockers' still amazing act over the weekend.

While Sunday's concert was a stunner and significantly drier than Saturday Nicks said the persistent rain actually added to the ambience of the atmosphere.

"The rain was very dramatic and of course, we love drama!

"So I would have to say that it certainly lent itself to romanticism."

Although the shows were the last of the tour, the band did not plan anything special to sign off the past year. Instead, they played it by ear.

"You never know what is going to happen on the last show of a tour," Nicks said.

"You can never make any plans because emotions are high and a part of you is sad because it's ending and a part of you is glad because you have been on the road for a year. So you never know what is going to happen."

And people were not disappointed. While the Fleetwood Mac concerts were generally expected to attract a more mature crowd, people of all ages turned up in droves. It was widely speculated that the tour might be their last.

During Saturday night's concert Buckingham hinted at the possibility of another tour and maybe another album.

Nicks says although the band has not discussed the next move, it is not off the cards.

Last night drew Fleetwood Mac's 2009 greatest hits world tour to a close in New Plymouth, New Zealand as the band performed at Taranaki's Bowl of Brooklands, bursting at the seams with fans who braved the rain for most of the concert. Here are Lindsey, Stevie and Mick's goodbyes to the audience.

Fleetwood Mac Belt Out the Hits in New Plymouth

Just as the rain kept falling the hits kept coming at Fleetwood Mac's sold out New Plymouth concert last night.

Unashamedly playing their most popular songs the supergroup had taken to the stage 15 minutes earlier than scheduled and managed to avoid the rain for that long.

The heaving crowd of nearly 18,000, one of the biggest ever seen at the Bowl of Brooklands venue, took the weather in their stride and let out a roar of approval to the opening lines of The Chain, the second song of the set.

"Well it's taken us a long time to get back here. I think it's been 25 years,'' said singer Stevie Nicks. "That being said I think we should just get this party started."

But it already was.

The hits Rhiannon, Landslide and Go Your Own Way kept adding to a thrilling momentum that threatened to derail in a tangled mess of middle-aged dance moves by the time Don't Stop was played as the second encore song.

The gig, which was the first of only two New Zealand concerts and the last in a 10 month world tour, pulled in people from all over the country.

More than half of the crowd in New Plymouth for the night had travelled there from outside of Taranaki.

Accommodation in the city had been booked out for months and despite hundreds of locals putting up visitors in their spare rooms and garages, many concert goers spent the night in their cars.

Others like Andy Blair of Taupo had no other choice but to drive home when the show finished at 10.30pm last night.

"It was worth it though,'' she said.

Drummer and founding member Mick Fleetwood gave the fans two pieces of advice to take away.

"Take care of yourself and more importantly take care and be kind to those around you in this crazy world we live in. We love you and remember the Mac will be back'' he said.

Band Plans to Duck Fans

Supergroup Fleetwood Mac will attempt a sneaky entrance in to New Plymouth today to avoid mobs that have greeted them during their world tour.

They are playing two sold-out concerts at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands this weekend and are understood to have declined Mayor Peter Tennent's offer of a Maori powhiri, or any type of welcome, when they arrive sometime between 3pm and 5.30pm today.

That is unless band member Stevie Nicks can convince her fellow members to accept the powhiri.

New Plymouth Mayor Peter Tennent said Ms Nicks enjoyed the traditional Maori welcome to Taranaki when she was here in 2006.

"She just loved it, but if they don't want it this time and just want to get in the zone to prepare for their concert, I can understand that and fully support it."

The promoter was still trying to convince the band to accept the welcome and experience the difference between New Zealand and the rest of the world, he said.

The decision to slip quietly into the city is apparently to avoid problems similar to those encountered in other countries, where the sheer number of fans turned their arrival into chaos.

If they do not change their minds, they will be visible to their devoted followers for just a few seconds before the concert – as they leave their chartered plane to get into the cars waiting for them on the tarmac.

But just when that glimpse can be had is a closely-guarded secret.

"I won't know when they are due to arrive until just before they take off from Wellington," New Plymouth Airport manager Kevin Hill said yesterday.

Though most flights are registered weeks and months before, there is no obligation for chartered flights to do the same.

"Basically, all I know is a plane is coming and that it will fit at one of our gates. They pay us landing fees and that is it," said Mr Hill.

Whatever the former notoriously hard-living band decide, they have already had their dressing room requirements filled by venue caterers Eurest.

Though they were tight-lipped about just what those requests were. Bowl manager Adrienne Kensington was allowed to say they were quite ordinary.

"Nothing really odd at all. We've had some weird ones before, but this time we didn't have to go out of the country to get everything they wanted."

The two New Plymouth concerts are the last in the band's 10-month Unleashed tour.

More than 17,000 fans are expected each night at the outdoor venue and New Plymouth is bracing itself for 20,000 visitors from outside the region.

Alicia Keys Says New Album Influenced by Fleetwood Mac

About two months before recording The Element of Freedom, Alicia Keys witnessed an event that would have a profound influence on her creative process: a Fleetwood Mac concert.

"It was my sister's birthday, and she wanted to see them," says Keys, 29, referring to longtime best friend Erika Rose. The R&B singer/songwriter knew of the veteran band but wasn't entirely familiar with its catalog. "So everyone was like, 'What? You don't know these songs?' "

REVIEW: Keys evolves on * * * 'Element of Freedom'

Other vintage pop acts also informed Freedom, her fourth studio album, which arrives today. Keys started "to experiment with keyboards from the late '70s and '80s. ... I listened to a lot of Genesis, The Police, Tears for Fears— people who hadn't been staples for me."

Her education influenced the album "in a very positive way. In the past, I wasn't as conscious of melody. This time, I wanted melodies that really soared, like the ones I heard at that (Mac) show."

“SOMEONE loves you, Stevie. We all love Stevie.”

And with those words from Fleetwood Mac guitarist Lindsey Buckingham - in response to adoring chants for the supergroup's seductive songstress Stevie Nicks - the 12,000-strong crowd at ME Bank Stadium last Friday night erupted in unanimous delight.

Nicks was clearly everyone's darling, including one-time lover Buckingham, who declared his affection for the mystical frontwoman on numerous occasions, holding her hand and with a warm embrace during the beautiful Sara.

It was a stirring statement from a pair of musical legends who, along with original member Mick Fleetwood on drums/percussion and bassist John McVie, once gain showed how to put fractured relationships behind them to deliver their cross-generational fans an epic journey of lush soundscapes, phenomenal instrumentation and effortless charisma.

The two-and-a-half hour set - spanning 23 songs mainly from their decorated post-1975 back-catalogue - kicked off with Monday Morning from their breakthrough self-titled album of 75, before rocking out with The Chain from their opus, 1977's Rumours.

Two songs in and Nicks - who was rarely without her trademark tambourine - greeted the crowd, urging everyone to 'get this party started', before sinking her still sexy, husky vocals into the ethereal magic of Dreams.

It was then time for Buckingham to endear himself to the punters, acknowledging the Mac's “complex, convoluted past” while declaring that coming together created new possibilities, which paved the way for I Know I'm Not Wrong from the ambitious, quirky double album of 1979, Tusk.

There were anecdotal interactions aplenty with Nicks reflecting on her time alongside Buckingham in the Fritz Raybyne Memorial Band in San Francisco in the late 60s, opening for the likes of Janis Joplin in front of 30,000 people and later, Jimi Hendrix before 70,000; “when you open for other bands, this is where you hone your skills”.

She then performed the hauntingly beautiful Gypsy, releasing her inner gypsy with her stage twirls and shortly after backed it up with Rhiannon, but not before one of many costume changes - albeit mainly of her essential accessories: gloves and shawls.

Matching Nicks in crowd favouritism was Buckingham, who mesmerised with his howling vocals and ferocious guitar playing on Tusk.

Following Nicks' Sara, Buckingham backed up Tusk with the powerful acoustic guitar-driven Big Love, before Nicks and band returned with Landslide, a song dedicated to all of Perth.

It was then Buckingham's turn to shine again with Never Going Back Again, performed like a man possessed in what was among the night's highlights.

Nicks then introduced Storms from Tusk as a “dark stormy song about people having a dark stormy time” - fitting from a band which together has weathered many a storm.

She then donned a gold shawl for Gold Dust Woman before the boys rocked out with early 70s Mac number, Oh Well, defined with Buckingham's aggressive snarl.

Nicks later returned - this time draped in a white lace shawl - to add some '80s glam with the lush, synth-heavy Stand Back from her 1983 solo album The Wild Heart, before donning an all-black ensemble complete with matching top hat for a spirited performance of main set closer, Buckingham's much-loved Go Your Own Way.

The foursome emerged for the first encore in pairs - first Fleetwood and McVie, followed by Nicks and Buckingham holding hands - and launched into a fervent rendition of World Turning, marked by Fleetwood's extended primal drum solo.

The double encore - which also comprised long-time band absentee Christine McVie's Don't Stop - concluded with “our first lady and poet” Nicks leading the band for Silver Springs, her composition that was famously cut from the final release of Rumours.

It was then time to bid farewell, but not before Fleetwood urged the crowd to “be kind to each other in this crazy world”.

They were pertinent parting words from someone who has somehow managed to keep this legendary musical collective united (for the most part) through four decades of emotional highs and lows.

Fleetwood Mac Don't Disappoint at Members Equity Stadium Concert

THERE are few bands who could weather the storms that have rained down on Fleetwood Mac.

By guitarist and singer Lindsey Buckingham's own admission the band's history is "complex, convoluted and emotionally wrought".

However standing in front of an audience of 12,000 Perth fans, Buckingham acknowledged that "in the long run it's made us stronger".

Buckingham went on to say that when the band, which includes singer Stevie Nicks, bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood, decided to come together once again it was a with a feeling of "new possibility".

And while the absence of retired singer Christine McVie could not be overlooked, especially during Go Your Own Way, the crowd was willing to explore the possibilities along with their heroes.

Billed as a greatest hits concert, the set list delivered almost everything a fan could wish for.

Monday Morning from the band's self-titled 1975 album kicked off proceedings, followed by The Chain from 1977's Rumours, which remains one of the highest selling albums of all time.

It was the seemingly eternally youthful Nicks who first greeted the crowd with a drawn out shout of "Perth, Australia. Welcome." Before stating it was time to "get this party started".

Sporting her trademark gothic gypsy look of velvet and lace, long black gloves and flowing blonde tresses, Nicks looked years younger than her 61 years.

However it was clear that time has diminished Nicks' vocal range, robbing her of the ability to hit the high notes in songs such as Rhiannon and Sara. But thankfully Nicks refrained from straining and squealing, instead she stayed in her lower range using her unique voice to convey the emotional depth of the lyrics.

Sharing the spotlight with his former love, Buckingham was simply mesmerising. The lithe 60-year-old has lost none of his guitar prowess or agility as was particularly evident on I'm So Afraid and Big Love.

Nicks and Buckingham made a great show of affection, frequently holding hands and embracing, much to the crowd's pleasure. Buckingham famously refused to join Fleetwood Mac, unless they also took his partner in love and music, Nicks. While the pair split in 1976 and have endured a turbulent relationship in subsequent years, they seem to have found renewed pleasure in working together. There is no doubt a strong musical bond remains between the two and it was a pleasure to witness their love and appreciation for the music they make together.

In introducing Gypsy, Nicks spoke of her early days jamming with Buckingham in San Francisco in the late 60s and early 70s. She spoke of opening for Janis Joplin in front of 35,000 people and Jimi Hendrix in front of 70,000 and how Buckingham's constant guitar playing "drove the gated community crazy".

Prior to the brilliant Second Hand News Buckingham responded to a punter's call of "I love you Stevie" by confessing: "We all love Stevie".

Go Your Own Way ended the first set, with Buckingham taking over the vocal duties for the song he penned. The crowd were on their feet for what is possibly the band's greatest song.

While Nicks and Buckingham may be the face of Fleetwood Mac, it's the rhythm section of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie that remains its backbone.

Famously founder Peter Green named his band for Fleetwood and McVie, as attempt to lure McVie away from John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. He finally succeeded in acquiring McVie in August 1967. On stage some four decades later, Fleetwood and McVie were still a rhythmic force to be reckoned with.

Fleetwood got his chance to truly shine in an extended drum solo during World Turning. It was also Fleetwood who introduced the band, albeit belatedly, during the encore. Fleetwood took the chance to pay tribute to the reticent McVie calling him his right hand man.

Don't Stop seemed to spell an end to the concert, but the band returned for a second encore of Silver Springs.

While no one was under the illusion that we were watching a band in their prime, what we got was more than we could have hoped for.

We got to see legends at play, reveling in their love of music. And maybe, just maybe, their enduring love for one another.

Glastonbury 2010 Fleetwood Mac Rumours - Glastonbury Officials Respond

The bloggers at Holy Moly celeb gossip must be having big fun watching the flames they fanned about Fleetwood Mac performing at Glastonbury 2010 erupt into an internet bonfire! Lots of buzz today speculating about the one-line confirmation on the gossip site's weekly news mailer.

So much so that Glasto officials responded to NME's inquiry on the news:

Gossip website suggested band will top the bill next summer

Glastonbury organisers say it is "unlikely" Fleetwood Mac will headline next year's festival, despite rumours emerging today (December 11) suggesting the band had been signed up for next summer's event.

Gossip site Holymoly.com claimed the reunited band would close the Somerset bash by topping the bill on the Pyramid Stage next year, however a spokesperson for the event has since told NME.COM that this is unlikely to happen, although they did not comment on whether the band will be involved in the 2010 festival.

U2 have been announced as headliners for the Friday (25) night of Glastonbury, while it is also heavily rumoured that Muse will also play a headline slot.

Fleetwood Mac recently played a UK arena tour.

To me, 'unlikely' means we're on to something here. I think it's true, if not yet finalized. We know the band has started work on their new album. A summer break may be perfectly timed to debut a few new songs or perhaps even launch a promotional tour if they really do lay it down that quickly. Can't wait to see what breadcrumbs are dropped next. What do you think?

Review: Fleetwood Mac Rock Sydney at Acer Arena

MUSIC is always at its most powerful when it pushes your memory buttons and Fleetwood Mac carressed and pummelled all those sweet spots at Acer Arena last night.

The veteran band who ushered in the west-coast sound has lost none of its fire but gained the self-awareness afforded by survival in the music business, using their legendary tensions, relationship breakdowns and drug problems to introduce so many great songs from Rumours and beyond.

Stevie Nicks may shirk just a few high notes now and then but her rendition of the soaring Sara was enough to bring tears to your eyes.

Lindsay Buckingham was in extraordinary form with his guitar solos and vocals but a little too in-your-face during those grunting moments.

The men holding it all together were chalk and cheese _ bassist John McVie the understated engine room while the delicious craziness and astonishing energy levels of Mick Fleetwood were enough to keep you gasping.

Hit after hit after hit, the setlist would represent the Holy Grail to any band who has only a couple of records under their belt.

Almost the entirety of Rumours _ Go Your Own Way, Don't Stop, Dreams, Second hand News, Silver Springs, Never Going Back Again, Gold Dust Woman, The Chain _ plus Rhiannon, Tusk, Big Big Love and the beautiful Sara gave the devoted fans exactly what they wanted.

Fleetwood Mac Sydney and Hope Estate Concert Reviews and Trivia!

Loyal Fans Ignore the Cracks in Heritage Rock

THIS is not meant to be a story about change. Things don't change in a hurry, if at all, in what the Americans call heritage rock. As in, solid as a rock. As in, preserved just as it was when we first saw it rock.

This of course is hardly going to cause complaints in an audience who have come for the security and comfort of the familiar: if they wanted new songs, they would buy a new album by some new artist. And what's an MP3 anyway?

The structure of this tour is much the same as five years ago: the songs - the hits, naturally, with one song each from a Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks solo album; the solo spots (Buckingham alone for Big Love; Buckingham and Nicks duet for the excellent Landslide); and the solos (Buckingham, as often as possible; John McVie briefly and Mick Fleetwood once).

There were also the absences. Without Christine McVie's songs this show is diminished and let's not get started on the wiped-from-history pre-1975 versions of Fleetwood Mac. And the additions (the multiple extra voices and instruments augmenting the remaining parts of the ''classic'' line-up).

But there were some changes worth noting and not just the fact that Mick Fleetwood's banal drum solo, complete with gibbering, was kept to less than 10 minutes (oh hallelujah!). Or that apart from occasional great moments such as Second Hand News and the set-closing Go Your Own Way, tempos and energy levels were frustratingly half a pace off, deadening songs such as Storms.

First, while Nicks's voice is in even poorer state than five years ago - the top range is long gone, the middle range is wobbly and songs such as Rhiannon can never recover - and her movements more stiff and limited, she seemed much more engaged with the songs, the audience and her bandmates this time.

On the other hand, a self-satisfied Buckingham was even more over the top, balancing his evident status as the healthiest and most capable musician in the band with a tendency to mug furiously and ridiculously. Perhaps unwittingly his voice was considerably louder than anyone else's in the mix so that when he and Nicks sang together her voice disappeared.

Not that the audience, wildly applauding anything and everything and offering standing ovations freely, minded. That's another thing which never changes.

A 19,000-capacity crowd filled the Hope Estate amphitheatre for last Saturday night’s Fleetwood Mac concert.

It was the biggest winery concert ever held in Australia and according to Hope Estate owner, Michael Hope “It went a treat, the feedback has been very positive.”

He said the whole wine and entertainment industry was watching to see how the venue and infrastructure coped, and it went beautifully.

The crowds started to arrive around 4.30pm with Stevie Nicks arriving by helicopter and the remainder of the group jetting into Cessnock Airport.

Crowds were well behaved and the venue coped well with the record number.

Mr. Hope said that while he has no exact figures, the area would have received a huge boost to the economy through the number of visitors who booked local accommodation and transport, not to mention meals and other needs.

He said the big challenge was to get cars back on the road and the winery will be beefing up its message for people to take public transport in the future.

He said a big percentage did use public transport and this is backed up by figures supplied by Michael Kerr at Rover Coaches.

Mr. Kerr said the company organised 121 coaches and then needed to bring in an addition seven to meet the demand.

He estimates there were 40 mini buses on the road and another 15 coaches from outside the area.

Mr. Kerr said the biggest number of coaches used previously was about 90 at the Elton John and Rod Stewart concerts. “This has been the biggest by far,” he said.

Licensing sergeant Barry Meyers said the crowd was well behaved and that Hope Estate had enlisted 20 user pay police officers. Police set up a mobile command station at the winery.

He said the road structure does not lend itself to so many people and he also urged future concert goers to consider using public transport.

Upcoming concerts at Hope Estate feature Rob Thomas on February 12 and 13 and the following Saturday Cliff Richard and The Shadows, followed by Whitney Houston on February 27.

I love reading about the every day 'regular people' stuff celebrities do. Being a hardcore coffee drinker myself, I got a kick out of this post by a Starbucks barista who made drinks for the band...or for their 'roadie', at least, whom she calls a 'tool'. I love that word. Visit the page to see what Stevie drank. *Aaaand, who do we think the toolish drink fetcher was? Mick's Karol, perhaps? Don't know if he is in fact a tool, but I can see him taking his mission rather intensely.

New Zealand Stocks Food and Drink for 35K at Fleetwood Mac Concert

Numbers Add Up for Fleetwood Mac

When it comes to organising two international concerts at the TSB Bowl of Brooklands, it’s all about the numbers.

Such as 3,000 ice creams, 8,000 hot dogs and 50kg of paella.

And 160 food and beverage staff serving along 45m of bar frontage.

“There will be around 35,000 people at the Fleetwood Mac concerts on 19 and 20 December and we’re making sure the food and beverage service goes smoothly,” says Eurest spokesman Craig Elder.

“The largest bar – which will be hard to miss at 18m long – will be at the back of Bowl to help with traffic flow, but overall there’ll be four food and beverage areas and four bars.

“We’ll have beer, wine, soft drinks and coffee available as well as food ranging from vegetarian options to doughnuts.

“It’ll be a couple of very busy nights but we’re ready to help make the concerts an amazing experience for the audience.”

Fleetwood Mac fans are travelling to the Bowl from the USA, Australia, the UK and Ireland, with two-thirds of concert-goers coming from outside the region.

Air New Zealand is putting on six additional flights that weekend to transport visitors to and from the district. There are 10,000 extra travellers expected by car via SH3 from the north, and 10,000 extra via SH3 from the south.

A train from Wellington will bring 450 people to the city on Saturday evening with the visitors leaving directly after the concert.

NPDC Manager Customer Services Cathy Thurston says there are 170 volunteers so far for the Fleetwood Mac weekend to help visitors with information and advice.

“However we need 105,000 ambassadors for the region,” she says.

“Every one of us can play a part in helping the 25,000 visitors from outside Taranaki have an incredible experience here, which will encourage them to come back for future events.”

Ms Thurston says the logistics around the Fleetwood Mac weekend are challenging, but the businesses and organisations involved are preparing well.

“This will be one of the largest weekends the TSB Bowl of Brooklands has ever had, and certainly one of the largest for our hospitality sector.

“Apart from anything else, these preparations for the Fleetwood Mac weekend will be a great dress rehearsal for other big events that are coming up, including the All Blacks vs Ireland test match next year, and the Rugby World Cup 2011.”

Europe Tour Flashback While Fleetwood Mac Fires it Up Down Under

Well hello again. If you've visited here for a while or follow me on twitter you know that moving to a new home recently has kicked my arse and resulted in serious neglect of this blog, my e-child. Each time I want to post, I approach my computer stacked upon a great mound of still unpacked boxes and that pesky responsibility thing beats my creative notions into submission. Blah.

So between unpacking, hooking stuff up and ensuring my two mischievous boy cats do not use all nine lives crawling into the endless new nooks and crannies here, my beloved Fleetwood Mac has slipped aside. *sniffle*

Enough. I'm sitting on the floor laughing in the face of unpacked stuffs and posting a few things I thought enjoyable memories from the European tour leg's end. As we take a look back at last month's England shows, Fleetwood Mac's already firing it up down under with two Melbourne shows come and gone. Time really does frickin fly. Sometimes I wish life had a pause button.

Anywho, here is a rather keen slide show of Fleetwood Mac's Sheffield concert with a few peeks backstage.

SO as the crowd were settling into their seats (or even still getting shown to them) little birds started to twitter and the lights went down and most of the crowd started to get excited and up out their seats (except for Block MM so it seemed - myself, two drunken women a few rows in front to my left and about six rows in front to my right three younger people with banner at the ready). As the band silhouettes gathered onto the stage and Lindsey broke into MONDAY MORNING you could feel the magic.

The stage felt smaller than the Say You Will Tour back in 2003, but the vibe was just as electrifying, and hit after hit was turned out. THE CHAIN came on, and for us in the UK it is the theme tune from the F1, and the crowd clearly erupted. For DREAMS and GYPSY, Stevie went into her story telling mode, which made the show seem a bit more personal. We were being led into the world of Stevie, if not of Fleetwood Mac. I forget the order of the set, as I was mesmerized by seeing a band I have liked since I was seven years old, and I basically played catch up on the back catalogue in my later teens, so it was nice to have a bit of story telling from Mr Buckingham too and to hear that SECOND HAND NEWS was the first song written for RUMORS. Somewhere in the set I know Lindsey also paid tribute to the Peter Green Fleetwood Mac years and did a wonderful rendition of OH WELL. This was probably the only song I did not know the words for, as it was TANGO IN THE NIGHT album that was brought to my attention. It was also wonderful seeing this man's guitar work and him going crazy on guitar solo's in BIG LOVE and GO INSANE.

For those of us who have seen the Mac/Stevie live we all know that Stevie Nicks likes to dedicate LANDSLIDE to someone special. And boy was it special for the Glasgow crowd. Fleetwood Mac had been in Scotland for about two days. The boys went out on the first day and went to a local 'bird park' and had raved to Ms Nicks about flying falcons and the scenery. So Stevie not wanting to miss out, she decided to go on the morning of the evening's gig, and flew a bird called "Scarlet" I believe. I may be wrong but it definitely began with an "S". Stevie was so taken by this bird, and so was the crowd with the story....so she dedicated LANDSLIDE to the bird trainer ;o)

As you may have noticed, I have yet to mention Mick or John, and as I heard someone mention, this tour felt like a Stevie and Lindsey show. I also heard someone say that John just stood back to play bass and could not wait to get off stage. I just have to say without this wonderful rhythm section of Fleetwood Mac we would not have the band that we know and love. And for real fans to have the opportunity to see them live you will see that it is not a Lindsey and Stevie show....especially when WORLD TURNING comes into play. Can I drummer like MICK FLEETWOOD really own the stage for about 10 minutes for pure 'banging' solo. He really came into his element, and really tried to get the crowd involved....which namely seemed to be the whole crowd but my section!!!

My personal highlight though was, as before, Stevie Nicks coming out for the last section of the night (before WORLD TURNING) and did her own number STAND BACK. This was let down though by the fact that having stood up and danced most of the gig, I was told by the people behind me to sit down...I mean how the hell can you sit down to a number like that? But I obliged as I was up for most of it! But then after that number the band went into GO YOUR OWN WAY and then did the party really start, albeit Stevie actually did say a few numbers back to get the party started.

Being a FLEETWOOD MAC/STEVIE NICKS fan since TANGO IN THE NIGHT, as much as I loved the evening I really wanted to hear the current line up play homage to CHRISTINE MCVIE and hoped for LITTLE LIES (though I hear people keep muttering for EVERYWHERE)...maybe one day...or if not then the next tour PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE sing SEVEN WONDERS ;p

All in all the band were fantastic and played brilliantly, a personal let down was my part of the crowd, but there will be more times so it seems and in the words of LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM, "we'll see you again soon".

Fleetwood Mac is performing to a UK crowd at the Wembley Arena for the second consecutive night as I write. Reviews from multiple sources report the band is in fine form and the audience of all ages wired with excitement.

Here is a collection of Wembley reactions in several media formats. Reviews are lengthy and excerpted so be sure to visit the links for the full read.

First, some passages from a wonderfully written review from The Arts Desk by Joe Muggs:

The first signs were good. I've been to a lot of shows by “heritage bands” in my time, but I don't think I've ever seen a crowd for a band of Fleetwood Mac's vintage that had such a relatively even age distribution. Sure, it was weighted towards the greying end of the scale, but every age group down to teens – including teens there in groups under their own steam, not just with parents – was well represented, right across class boundaries too.

Fleetwood and McVie looked rather like a multimillionaire Chas & Dave with their matching flat caps, waistcoats and beards, while Buckingham had the air of an over-dressed pervy music teacher and Nicks of a wonderfully batty goth aunt, complete with one black glove, tinsel hanging from her sleeves and a mic stand draped with witchy decorations. But somehow, among the arena lightshow and moving set decorations, despite all the history, they still looked like their relationship was musical.

Nicks, in fact, despite what could in a lesser performer have been annoyingly kooky affectations, held the whole first half of the show together. Where Buckingham's between-songs addresses to the audience seemed horrendously worthy, full of Californian therapy talk about “shared appreciation” and “how important it is to just have fun”, her chat was insouciant, sincere, ditzy, and her memories of late-60s San Fransisco before they played “Gypsies” entirely absorbing. If it hadn't been for her the first half of the set could have felt like the best dads-down-the-pub-on-a-Sunday-blues band in the world. Continue reading at The Arts Desk.

I like this video of the concert opener, "Monday Morning" because it records the cricket chirps that have come to signal the show's about to begin. Singing starts around 1:48 and gives you a good idea of how the spell is initially cast by Fleetwood Mac live if you've not seen them yet.
