On Thursday, December 1st at 4:00 p.m., Still Hopes will plant a 7 foot tall Cryptomeria in celebration of Arbor Day. We will also recognize our 150 year old Southern Red Oak which won the 2011 Treasured Tree award. The award is sponsored by the Columbia Garden Club, the City of Columbia, and the Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission.

A formal Arbor Day program will be held on the Mansion Veranda with comments from Tim Womick, who is often referred to as the modern-day Johnny Appleseed. For over a decade he has crossed America planting trees at schools, parks and other places, while also planting seeds of thought in the minds of those he meets. Children are invited to plant acorns from the Treasured Tree on the grounds of Still Hopes following the ceremony.

For more information contact Kirsten Moorman at 739-5006 or Jon Keith at 739-5041.

Still Hopes is proud to announce that we are an ICAA Champion
Organization. ICAA stands for the International Council on Active Aging
and is an organization dedicated to uniting and supporting communities
that include older adults in all dimensions of wellness. Still Hopes
shares a vision with ICAA of the need to dispel society’s myths, which
are primarily negative, about aging.

As an ICAA Champion, Still Hopes will work with media, marketers,
families, and individuals about the untapped human potential associated
with aging. We will help create positive messages to counter negative
stereotyping. The Still Hopes organization has become a role model for
dignity and human potential, exemplifying and supporting older adults’
values to society and continuing purpose in life.

Our caring employees at Still Hopes are the Who;
The Employee Appreciation Fund is the What;
September 6, 2011 until November 20, 20ll is the When;
Because we do not give tips and presents to the employees for all they do for us through out the year is the Why;

These wonderful people are here for us 24/7 doing all the household and garden duties that we used to have to do: we never had to cut the grass or stand over a hot stove in this 100 degree summer, we do not have to wash the dishes after everyone else had gone to the parlor, we do not have to push a vaccum, clean the bathroom, change the sheets, or walk up the hill from the parking lots at the Koger Center since living at Still Hopes. We can knit, sing, exercise, be “crafty”, and go to Chapel Services together. We know what a joy it is to live at Still Hopes! We want to share our joy with those who make our lives comfortable. Each fall the Employee Appreciation Fund Committee of Still Hopes begins the annual, one time a year, campaign to encourage our residents, our families, and our friends, to give generously to the Fund.
Approximately three hundred employees are dedicated daily to our comfort, safety, security, house-keeping, and our happiness. Some of these employees are quite visible while others are working behind the scenes taking care of the things we take for granted.

The only way for us to demonstrate our gratitude for their daily efforts to enhance our quality of life is to give a substantial gift to the Employee Appreciation Fund. The monies in the Fund are given to all employees below the director level at their Christmas Party in December. The distribution of the fund is based on hours worked in the immediate past year and also on the number of years a person has been with Still Hopes. The years are calibrated by each five years served.

Non-deductible contributions to the Fund can be made through the Business Office at 1 Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia, SC 29169. Checks should be made out to the Employee Appreciation Fund.

The Employee Appreciation Fund Committee: Fitz Beazley and Bert Sullivan; co-chairmen, Frances Case, Jean Doster, Martha Lever, Marilyn Maddox, Joyce Ellisor.

The remodeling and renovation projects at Still Hopes will be featured in the September issue of Long Term Living magazine. (pdf)

GMK Interiors worked with Still Hopes on extensive renovations to 24 resident rooms and its public healthcare areas. The design team created custom storage spaces, along with new finishes and fixtures for each resident room, as well as renovated bathing spaces. Working to “open up each room” and create more usable space, the designers reprogrammed existing areas and added fresh design materials. The result: personal, residential rooms easier to navigate and more accommodating from a storage standpoint. The traditional healthcare unit was transformed into a residential-inspired space offering comfort, activity and, above all, choices that meet the residents’ needs and exceed their expectations.
