The first set of performances come from A Conspiracy Of Hope, Amnesty's 25th anniversary US concert tour in 1986. This was followed by Human Rights Now!, the historic 5-continent 20-concert world tour undertaken in 1988. The series continued with stand-alone concerts An Embrace Of Hope in Chile in 1990 and The Struggle Continues in Paris in 1998.
The musical called "The Last Ship", based on Sting's own history and his album Soul Cages, will now also feature a live band for every performance. While the casting has been called for a two days audition session in New York on April 1st and 2nd, the group of musicians has already been formed and will consist of:
- David Paich (keyboards)
- Steve Porcaro (keyboards)
- Steve Lukather (guitars)
- Nathan East (bass)
- Simon Phillips (drums)

Sting described them as "the best band he has performed with so far. Toto would be jealous!"

The Last Ship tells of a group of shipyard workers whose yard is to close and who are reluctant to transfer their skills to service the offshore industry.

... and it is 1st of April. :-)

Andy Summers, whose distinctive guitar play helped shape the sound of The Police, has found a new musical partner in L.A. songwriter Rob Giles. The duo, going under the moniker Circa Zero, have completed work on their as-yet-untitled ten-song debut and will be announcing a spring release date and series of live dates soon. The Los Angeles-based Summers, a fan of Giles' band The Rescues, met up with the singer/songwriter and the two began writing songs together, a process Giles describes to Direct Current as "a lot of fun" and an opportunity to creatively have "the freedom to do what we want to do". Summers and Giles are currently looking to expand to a trio on the road with the addition of a touring drummer, a role the multi-instrumentalist Giles took on in the studio. "We definitely want to go out and play," Summers tells BILLBOARD. "The songs are great, very strong pop/rock, lyrical. Rob has a killer voice. So it's been fun. I'm looking forward...

Bryan Ferry, Sting, Neil Tennant and Mark Knopfler launch attack on Newcastle City Council

A host of musicians including Bryan Ferry, Sting, Neil Tennant and Mark Knopfler have attacked Newcastle City Council for slashing its culture budget. In a letter to The Guardian, the musicians protest against the local authoritys plans to completely cut its 2.5 million culture budget, calling the decision a "shortsighted attack" on Newcastle's cultural life and say the council risks "throwing away a shared cultural heritage built up by generations and generations of ordinary people in the city."
The blanket cuts to the arts, come as part of a 90 million budget reduction from Newcastles public services by 2016 would result in "generations of young people denied access to the opportunities we were given and, without the council's support, the arts will simply become a pursuit for the most wealthy," the musicians say.
Some of the organisations affected by the proposed cuts include the Northern Stage and Live Theatre, as well as the Great...

It appears that fans of Sting expect more than just a few songs during his upcoming Jakarta concert next Saturday. They want him to play an active part in the human rights campaign in Indonesia by dedicating his song They Dance Alone for murdered activist Munir. Fans have started signing an online petition via the campaign website or messaging Sting on his official twitter account @officialSting in the last few days, especially on Saturday (Dec. 8), the date Munir was born in Malang, East Java, in 1965.

Milling About with Andy Summers

Andy Summers joins host Robin Milling to discuss his documentary Can't Stop Losing You: Surviving The Police, which he'd prefer to think of as the working title. He tells Robin it should be called One Train Later named for his memoir which chronicles Andy's journey through life as a musician.
Andy says his memories of The Police were pretty much in tact but had to be jarred through photographs he took, books about the band to get the facts straight, and listening to live tracks of the band in the background for inspiration.
In the documentary and the memoir Andy is undeniably the former guitar player for The Police and the footage is all there from the interviews and backstage rivalries, to the 2007 reunion; but he is also a father, an accomplished photographer, and the front man for a new band Circa Zero he describes as edgy contemporary rock.
When?:...

Don Diablo's track by Sting

Don Diablo, a popular Dutch DJ, has a track written by Sting. The DJ announced the news on FunX radio today.

The album is called "M1 Stinger". You won't hear Sting in the song. The vocals are sung by a singer. "It is a record that is dear to my heart," said Don Diablo.

The DJ did more revelations, he said he is working on an album that is very personal. Nicky Romero which was also in the studio was told that he has created a track with "The Voice Of Holland winner Ben Saunders". The proceeds from this single will go to KWF.

Later today (Saturday), Sting will sing at a birthday party of another wealthy Russian businessman, David Kaplan, who hired the singer initially to an exclusive party at the famous beach of Capriccioli at the Costa Smeralda, but then moved it for safety reasons to the French Riviera.

STING 3CD - July 27, 1988 Los Angeles Wiltern Theatre - Soundboard recording

For the avid bootleg collectors, a new gem has popped up: STING - July 27, 1988 Los Angeles "Wiltern Theatre" - Soundboard recording. This show was part of the second US-leg of the 1987/ 1988 Nothing Like The Sun tour. Most of the shows were performed in large arenas or at special summer festivals. He did however play in the intimate Wiltern Theatre on July 27. Only about 2,300 people were able to attend this very special and long show. Sting and the band performed all the songs they did during the other dates of the tour, but many extra songs were added. The show also included several interesting covers (including songs by George Gershwin and Frank Zappa). This resulted in the longest Sting show ever. A whopping 172 minutes, or almost 3 hours. Some members of the band had the chance to perform some songs of their own: Dolette McDonald, Delmar Brown, Kenny Kirkland and Branford Marsalis provided some very high quality moments. During the tour Sting liked to perform songs...

Suggs on stage with Sting

Madness singer Suggs had to be hauled away by security guards after drunkenly invading a stage as Sting performed at Oxfordshires (posh) Henley Festival. Stumbling on to the stage during a rendition of Wrapped around your finger... Suggs, 51, told Sting: "I mean this so sincerely. When I was a kid, right, I used to look at Sting and I used to think, one day goddammit. Given the chance." And here it is right before you. Ladies and gentlemen, Sting. Sting replied: "Thank you Suggs, give him a round of applause ladies and gentlemen." It did take security quite some time to take Suggs of stage during De do do do De da da da as you can see on this video.

This album you hold in your hands is the ultimate effort of the band trying to pay a righteous tribute to another trio, so different yet so similar for its unprecedented ability to sound unique and distinctive. Playing cover versions of famous hits is always a work of mixing the writer and the performer together into a newborn creature that from now on gains a life of its own.
Documentary DVD of 1982 Glen Helen Park festival

A documentary DVD of 1982 Glen Helen Park festival will be released in september. The Police was there.

Stewart Copeland of The Police Reminisces About the '82 US Festival: "We were sold on the idea of coming to this festival in that it would be the opposite of Woodstock. It's absolutely comfortable, the grass is clean, the sound system is pristine. It was a really great experience, and the 'US' Festival was really the precursor to that. The idea that a festival isn't misery. The Festival still resonates. It was not Woodstock. It should've been, considering the talent."

Regarded as the Woodstock of the 80's, the 'US' Festival captured the mindset of a culture on the cusp of a technology transformation. ICON Television Music, UNUSON and Plum Moving Media are pleased to announce the only authorized and sanctioned documentary revealing the bands, fans and organizers who brought Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak's rock festival to life.

Geordie stars Sting, Mark Knopfler and Brian Johnson in musics rich list

3 North East stars have been named among the Top 50 Music Millionaires in Britain and Ireland.
Former Tyneside teacher Sting - real name Gordon Sumner - is the highest, ranked joint-13th alongside ex-Beatle George Harrisons widow Olivia and son Dhani.
He is said to have a personal fortune of 180m, amassed through his solo work and his earlier career as frontman of The Police.
Joining him in the list, at joint-42nd, is Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler, with an estimated personal wealth of 65m. He is said to be worth the same as 1960s crooner Engelbert Humperdinck, who is representing Britain at this years Eurovision Song Contest, and warring Oasis brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher.
And not far behind is a third Tynesider, AC/DC singer Brian Johnson, whose fortune stands at an estimated 50m - the same as Take Thats Gary Barlow and legendary Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison.

Sting, Mraz and Guster Sign Pledge for Legally Harvested Wood

Adam Gardner, band member of Guster and and co-founder of the non-profit organization Reverb, testified last week at a Congressional hearing on behalf of many bands in the music industry. Gardners effort was to preserve the Lacey Act, which bans the use of illegal woods, providing artists and consumers with the reassurance that their instruments are not made from these materials. Currently proposed bills in Congress will weaken the Lacey Act.
In addition to Guster, the pledge on the Reverb website has been signed by artists such as Dave Matthews Band, Jack Johnson, Sting, Mick Jagger, Maroon 5, Barenaked Ladies, Jason Mraz, Bonnie Raitt, and Willie Nelson.

Dear (German) Sting fans,

A German TV production company is currently working on a documentary about Sting for one of the biggest public German broadcasters. Our aim is to provide an insight on his career and life and portray the artist from his very first steps in the business to his greatest success. As we want our music documentary to be as versatile as possible we are looking for footage or photos of Sting. Maybe you have some remarkable pictures of him (it's important that you own the rights though), old newspaper articles you could scan or rare live-recordings you would like to share. Please send us a mail to stingdocumentary@gmail.com. We are looking forward to it!

A workprint of a lost documentary about the tumultuous making of Disney's 2000 animated The Emperor's New Groove appeared on YouTube some weeks ago, but was subsequently removed. The back story, via MousePlanet's Wade Sampson, prominently features Sting.

In 1997, musical performer and composer Sting was asked by the Walt Disney Company to write the music for a new animated feature called Kingdom of the Sun. It was to be directed by Roger Allers who was basking in the success of his work on The Lion King. Sting agreed, on the condition that his wife, filmmaker Trudie Styler, could document the process of the production with their own production company, Xingu Films.

The Sweatbox, whose title refers to the air-conditioning-bereft screening room Walt Disney set up to evaluate his employees' work, premiered at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival but has gone virtually unseen by the public ever since. Disney owns the rights and never officially released it.

It's basically...

Sting and Trudie Styler attended the Broadway production of the new musical Newsies at the Nederlander Theatre this past weekend.

Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies, with music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein, tells the story of Jack Kelly (played by Jordan), a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged 'newsies,' who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets.
