Paul Simon & Sting tour: On Stage Together

What we announced some months ago is now official: Sting and Paul Simon Will Tour Together. On Tuesday, Sting and Mr. Simon are to announce that they will appear together on a North American tour, during which they will perform several of their best-known songs individually and as a duo. Eighteen dates are scheduled from Feb. 8 through March 16 (incl. a March 4 appearance at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan), with additional dates expected to be announced. The two singer-songwriters will be backed up by their respective bands on the tour. The tour has a simple title, �Paul Simon & Sting: On Stage Together�.

The films of all the "Human Rights Concerts" have been digitally restored and are to be released in 2013 in DVD, audio and digital formats. Three of the four films have never been available in any format since their one-time-only airing on TV - making the upcoming release all the more exciting. The complete concert set will be released on a 6-disc DVD box-set in the Fall of 2013. The title of the box-set is "�RELEASED!" and features Sting and The Police. Yesterday Miles was interviewed by the Argentinean radio station Vorterix (listen here). Some poignant remarks were made, including that Sting didn�t have a single hit since 2001. THE BIRTH OF CIRCA ZERO (according to Andy) One night Andy was invited to the Troubadour in LA by his friend Peter Leak the manager of a band called the Rescues. Andy had never heard of the Rescues but believed his friend when he said that they were the greatest band of all time. Sting will release an album of new songs in September, entitled 'The Last Ship', accompanying the musical of the same name on which we have reported in previous articles already. The play is expected to run on Broadway in 2014. It will be released on 24 September 2013 in a collaboration with Cherrytree, Interscope and A & M Records labels. The new album will consist of songs used in the musical and songs that did not make it for the musical. As we reported some months ago, three songs have been distributed to music officials: The Last Ship (waltz-time folk tune, heavy with Christian imagery and told in a Northern English dialect), And Yet (jazzy funk number, sung from the point of view of a sailor arriving in his home port and wondering about a woman he left behind), Dead Man�s Boots (tense dialogue between a father who works in the shipyard and a son who wants to do something else with his life). Andy Summers, whose distinctive guitar play helped shape the sound of The Police, has found a new musical partner in L.A. songwriter Rob Giles. The duo, going under the moniker Circa Zero, have completed work on their as-yet-untitled ten-song debut and will be announcing a spring release date and series of live dates soon. The Los Angeles-based Summers, a fan of Giles' band The Rescues, met up with the singer/songwriter and the two began writing songs together, a process Giles describes to Direct Current as "a lot of fun" and an opportunity to creatively have "the freedom to do what we want to do". Summers and Giles are currently looking to expand to a trio on the road with the addition of a touring drummer, a role the multi-instrumentalist Giles took on in the studio. A host of musicians including Bryan Ferry, Sting, Neil Tennant and Mark Knopfler have attacked Newcastle City Council for slashing its culture budget. In a letter to The Guardian, the musicians protest against the local authority�s plans to completely cut its �2.5 million culture budget, calling the decision a "shortsighted attack" on Newcastle's cultural life and say the council risks "throwing away a shared cultural heritage � built up by generations and generations of ordinary people in the city." Recording has started on the new CD by Sting that will accompany the forthcoming "Last Ship" musical. Carel Kraayenhof is one of the artists who was contacted by Rob Mathes (producer of the CD "Symphonicities" by Sting and his DVD "Live in Berlin") with the request for a CD recording with Sting at his house in the UK. Michael Kiwanuka was also in the studio with Sting in NYC on September 21, 2012 for a collaboration. Not sure this is for the Last ship CD :-).

For the avid bootleg collectors, a new gem has popped up: STING - July 27, 1988 Los Angeles "Wiltern Theatre" - Soundboard recording. This show was part of the second US-leg of the 1987/ 1988 Nothing Like The Sun tour. Most of the shows were performed in large arenas or at special summer festivals. He did however play in the intimate Wiltern Theatre on July 27. Only about 2,300 people were able to attend this very special and long show. Sting and the band performed all the songs they did during the other dates of the tour, but many extra songs were added. The show also included several interesting covers (including songs by George Gershwin and Frank Zappa). This resulted in the longest Sting show ever. A whopping 172 minutes, or almost 3 hours. Some members of the band had the chance to perform some songs of their own: Dolette McDonald, Delmar Brown, Kenny Kirkland and Branford Marsalis provided some very high quality moments.
