Another long-term concern is pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive disease in which scarring thickens and hardens lung tissue, making it difficult for oxygen to move into the bloodstream. Dr. Elsayegh describes a lung with pulmonary fibrosis as “a stiff balloon from the party store” — your face flushes as you try to force air inside, but it simply refuses to inflate.

As a former Palisades resident intent on returning to the neighborhood, Dr. Elsayegh is also doubling as a trusted confidant, drawing on his personal experience to help his patients face uncertainties and find solutions — or next steps, at least.

“In an ideal world, I would go in there and say, ‘Everyone that lives in the Palisades and in L.A. County, let’s all move. Let’s all go somewhere else and we don’t have to worry about this,’ ” he said. “That’s not reality. I’m trying to find this unbelievably difficult balance of helping us return to normalcy or return to our life, but doing it as safely as possible.”

In early February, Dr. Elsayegh pulled up a chair next to Dana Michels, a cybersecurity lawyer and healthy mother of three who had gone to check the damage at her house and now could not shake a cough.

“Sweetheart, you’re not moving air at all,” Dr. Elsayegh said, listening to her lungs through a stethoscope and quickly ordering a breathing test and a nebulizer, to start. A pulmonary student asked to take a listen, then glanced up at Dr. Elsayegh, looking confused.

“I’m not hearing anything,” the student said. Dr. Elsayegh gave a single nod.

After years of renting, Ms. Michels and her husband got their first mortgage almost four years ago; it was a family milestone. Now, with their Palisades home smoked through, the family is split between two rental apartments in Marina del Rey — one for boys, one for girls — and they are navigating a new school, new insurance paperwork and new prescriptions to manage the wheezing.

BEIJING — Xi Jinping didn’t even have to mention Donald Trump by name to get his point across.

The Chinese president was giving the hard sell to a room full of senior Latin American leaders on Tuesday. He promoted his country’s stability and fundamental reasonableness, providing a clear contrast between him and his U.S. counterpart’s erratic trade war.

“Bullying and coercion only lead to isolation,” he said in Beijing at the China-CELAC, or Community of Latin American and Caribbean States Forum. The context was clear.

The world’s two largest economies remain engaged in a trade war that has also engulfed nearly every country on earth, including more than 30 Latin American and Caribbean countries who sent heads of state and senior officials to Tuesday’s forum.

In his first public comments since the U.S. and China agreed to a 90-day pause on most of their levies in trade talks over the weekend, Xi said Beijing was ready to work with Latin American and Caribbean countries in the face of “rising geopolitical tensions and bloc confrontation, unilateralism and protectionism.”

While Trump has allies such as El Salvador President Nayib Bukele and Argentinian President Javier Milei, he has alienated much of Latin America with his threats to “take back” the Panama Canal and his derogatory comments about immigrants, said Bárbara Fernández Melleda, an assistant professor in Latin American studies at the University of Hong Kong.

“It seems that Donald Trump is certainly Latin American-adverse, and the way he’s been speaking about the Latin American community in the United States has been really sad for us,” she said.

“What’s happening, not just in Latin America, is that countries are saying, ‘Well, if these big countries are getting hostile, we should just find other partnerships.’”

China played up those tensions in the lead-up to the forum, rejecting the idea of Latin American and Caribbean countries being in anyone’s “backyard.”

“What the people of Latin America and the Caribbean seek are independence and self-determination, not the so-called new Monroe Doctrine,” Assistant Foreign Minister Miao Deyu was quoted as saying by Chinese state media, referring to the 19th-century U.S. approach to the region as its “sphere of influence” that Trump has been accused of trying to revive.

The Cuban ambassador to China, Alberto Blanco Silva, told NBC News after Xi’s speech that he viewed China “as a factor of stability, balance and opportunity — not only for the world, but also for Latin America.”

China is Latin America’s second-biggest trading partner after the United States, and Latin America is the biggest destination for Chinese outbound investment outside Asia. Last year, total trade between China and Latin America exceeded $500 billion for the first time, up from $12 billion in 2000.

Beijing has also been cultivating Latin American ties with an eye on Taiwan, the self-governing island democracy it views as a breakaway province. Most of Taiwan’s few remaining diplomatic allies are in the region, and China peeled away one of them — Honduras — in 2023.

Chinese influence in Latin America can be seen in the electric vehicles on its roads as well as massive infrastructure projects, such as the $1.3 billion Chancay port in Peru.

While there are concerns and criticism around such projects, Latin American countries’ relationship with China “seems to be more symmetrical than we are used to,” especially when compared with the U.S. and former colonial rulers in Europe, Fernández Melleda said.

Xi said Tuesday that China would import more from Latin America, encourage Chinese companies to increase investment and provide 66 billion yuan ($9.1 billion) in fresh credit to support Latin American and Caribbean financing.

The Chinese leader also said he wanted to deepen Latin America’s involvement in Beijing’s Belt and Road infrastructure initiative. Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who in January agreed to accept U.S. deportation flights after Trump threatened him with sweeping tariffs, said Monday that his country would join Belt and Road.

Boys and young men are struggling. Across their lives — in their educational achievement, mental health and transitions to adulthood — there are warning signs that they are falling behind, even as their female peers surge ahead.

In the United States, researchers say several economic and social changes have combined to change boys’ and men’s trajectories. School has changed in ways that favor girls, and work has changed in ways that favor women. Boys are often seen as troublemakers, and men have heard that masculinity is “toxic.”

Young people themselves tend to agree that girls are now at least equal to — and often doing better than — boys. Many young men say they feel unmoored and undervalued, and parents and adults who work with children are worried about boys. It’s not just a feeling: There’s a wealth of data that shows that boys and young men are stagnating. Below, I’ll explain what some of that data is.

Some boys have been affected more than others — the outcomes for Black boys are worse, and growing up in poverty disproportionately hurts boys. And in some cases, the patterns aren’t new — boys have always lagged girls in certain areas, yet there has been little focus on their issues, perhaps because men have dominated in so many spheres.

That is beginning to change, said Niobe Way, author of “Rebels With a Cause: Reimagining Boys, Ourselves and Our Culture” and a professor of developmental psychology at N.Y.U. “Boys and young men, they are starving just like everybody else to be seen as they see themselves, as good people,” she said. “They want to not only survive but also have the opportunity to thrive.”

Here is an overview of some ways in which boys and young men aren’t thriving.

School has become more academic earlier, perhaps making it harder for boys, who generally mature later than girls, researchers say. Boys enter kindergarten behind girls, in both their academic readiness and their behavior. The gender gaps persist as they move through school. Across the United States, girls score better on reading tests than boys. Girls earn higher G.P.A.s. Boys are more likely to be suspended.

All this leads to a lower likelihood of graduating high school on time for boys than girls — 83 percent for boys compared with 89 percent for girls, according to a Brookings Institution analysis.

Women also outnumber men in college enrollment, which is linked to broader career prospects and higher earnings. Of recent male high school graduates, about 57 percent are enrolled in college, barely up from 54 percent in 1960, federal data shows. In that same period, women’s college enrollment has surged past them — 66 percent are now enrolled, up from 38 percent. (For both, enrollment is down from prepandemic highs.)

Boys also have strengths in school. On math tests, they tend to outscore girls (especially white and Asian American boys in high-income suburbs), and since the pandemic, boys’ academic performance has improved relative to girls’. Still, researchers say there is something about modern-day school that is not enabling boys to fulfill their potential.

“In education, this is more a story of the acceleration of girls,” said Richard Reeves, president of the American Institute for Boys and Men. “But there is enough evidence to think that the educational system is not as boy-friendly as it could and should be.”

Mental health has been worsening for young people in general, and for boys in some different ways than for girls. Among boys ages 3 to 17, 28 percent have a mental, emotional, behavioral or developmental problem, compared with 23 percent of girls, according to the Child and Adolescent Health Measurement Initiative.

Boys are roughly twice as likely as girls to be diagnosed with A.D.H.D. or autism, though experts caution that those may be underdiagnosed in girls, for whom symptoms can show up differently.

Mental health has also been declining for girls, who are more likely than boys to have anxiety and depression. Researchers say that because boys still face the expectation to be stoic, their struggles more often show up in their behavior. Nearly two-thirds of teenagers say boys are more disruptive in class, while just 4 percent say girls are, Pew Research Center found in a recent survey of teens. (Other behaviors, though, like physical fighting and drug use, have decreased for boys.)

And though most teenage boys, 84 percent, told Pew they have at least one friend they can lean on for emotional support, that’s not as many as the 95 percent of girls who say they do.

Overall, suicide is more prevalent among men than women, and has increased among young people. But the increases are far greater for young men. In 2023, the suicide rate for males ages 15 to 24 was 21 per 100,000, up from 11 in 1968, according to an analysis of C.D.C. data by the American Institute for Boys and Men. The suicide rate for young women was five per 100,000, up from three.

“The data is clear men aren’t super healthy,” said Matt Englar-Carlson, a professor and founder of the Center for Boys and Men at Cal State Fullerton. “I don’t know any men my age or younger who don’t know someone who died by suicide.”

Though young people in general are taking longer to reach the traditional milestones of adulthood, it’s particularly true of young men.

Among men ages 25 to 34, 19 percent still live with their parents, up from 14 percent in 1983, according to census data. Of women that age, 13 percent live with their parents, up from 11 percent four decades ago.

While women and men used to be equally likely to be single — less than a third of those ages 25 to 54 were in 1990 — now 39 percent of men and 36 percent of women don’t have a partner, a Pew analysis of census data found (the mismatch may be because women often partner with older men, Pew researchers said.)

The work trajectories of men and women have also diverged, as many of the jobs that mostly men did, like manual labor, have disappeared in the United States, while women dominate today’s service-oriented work.

The share of men working or looking for work has steadily declined, while the share of women working has rapidly climbed. Of men ages 25 to 54, 89 percent are in the labor force, down from 94 percent in 1975. Of women that age, 78 percent are in the labor force, up from 55 percent in 1975.

And while women still earn less than men, their median weekly earnings have climbed 19 percent since 2000, while men’s have increased just 7 percent in that period.

“The contemporary American economy is not rewarding a lot of the characteristics associated with men and masculinity,” said Robb Willer, a professor of sociology at Stanford, “and the sense is those trends will continue.”

Sean Penn is open to working with controversial director Woody Allen again.

During an interview for The Louis Theroux Podcast on Tuesday, the Oscar-winning actor revealed he is willing to collaborate with the filmmaker on another project, having worked with him on the 1999 comedy-drama Sweet and Lowdown.

“I see he’s not proven guilty, so I take him as innocent, and I would work with him in a heartbeat,” he declared.

Host Theroux went on to question Penn over whether he believed Allen had a “bad rap” in Hollywood.

“I would work with him in a heartbeat, if it was the right thing… With these things, I don’t know anyone well enough to say, ‘One hundred per cent, this didn’t happen, that didn’t happen,'” the 64-year-old replied. “God forbid you are wrong and there is a victim involved in something. But boy, I find the stuff that I know about, and I haven’t read everything, the stories are mostly told by people that I wouldn’t trust with a dime. It just seems so heavily weighted in that way.”

Allen has been blacklisted in the entertainment industry since his ex-wife Mia Farrow publicly accused him of sexually abusing their adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, back in 1992. Dylan repeated the molestation allegation during a TV interview in 2018.

Allen, 89, has always maintained the claims are false. Two investigations were closed after finding no evidence against him and he has never faced charges.

And as the Annie Hall director has never been proven guilty of a crime, Penn presumes he is “innocent”.

Joking that perhaps he is “an ignoramus”, the Mystic River star continued, “I am not aware of any clinical psychologist or psychiatrist or anyone I’ve ever heard talk or spoken to around the subject of paedophilia that in 80 years of life, there’s accusations of it happening only once. I’m not aware of that.”

Representatives for Allen and Dylan, 39, have not yet responded to Penn’s comments.

An internationally renowned mushroom expert who discovered death caps near Erin Patterson’s home has started his evidence in her triple murder trial.

Dr Thomas May, a mycologist or scientist specialising in fungi, appeared in Patterson’s trial on Tuesday.

Patterson, 50, has pleaded not guilty to three charges of murder and one charge of attempted murder relating to the lunch she served at her house in Victoria’s Leongatha on 29 July 2023.

Patterson is accused of murdering her estranged husband Simon’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, his aunt Heather Wilkinson, and attempting to murder Ian Wilkinson, Simon’s uncle and Heather’s husband.

The court has previously heard the lunch guests died after being poisoned with death cap mushrooms that were in a paste used by Patterson to make individual beef wellingtons.

The prosecution alleges Patterson deliberately poisoned her lunch guests with “murderous intent”, but her lawyers say the poisoning was a tragic accident.

May told the court on Tuesday that death cap mushrooms were most commonly reported in May, and outlined the three known sightings of death cap mushrooms in the Gippsland region, and the “citizen science” website iNaturalist, which is often used to report sightings.

Nanette Rogers SC, for the prosecution, said in her opening statement to the jury last month that May posted on iNaturalist about a discovery of death cap mushrooms under his profile name “funkeytom” in May 2023.

The post on iNaturalist, a site which is publicly available but requires a profile in order to post observations, included photos and GPS coordinates within about 20 metres of where May discovered the death cap mushrooms in Neilson Street, Outtrim, Rogers told the jury.

She said in her opening statement that the prosecution allege Patterson’s phone data suggests she travelled to the Outtrim area the day after May posted about his discovery on iNaturalist. The site is about 20km from her Leongatha home.

May said he came across the death cap mushrooms while on a short walk after speaking to a community group in Outtrim about fungi.

He said that he included photos, latitude and longitude and geo-coordinates in his post, but not the specific street.

He was also shown two photos of mushrooms on scales, one of which he said appeared highly consistent with death cap mushrooms, and another he said appeared to be commercially grown button mushrooms.

May was also asked by Rogers on Tuesday about another case of fatal death cap mushroom poisoning. He noted there was no central registry of such cases, but said he was familiar with a case reported in 1997 which involved a husband and wife who cooked wild mushrooms, resulting in the husband dying in hospital.

Under cross-examination from Sophie Stafford, for Patterson, May said that young death cap mushrooms could also be predominantly white, rather than the greenish or brownish colour exhibited in mature specimens.

He said there were also mushrooms with white gills, like death caps, which were non-toxic mushrooms.

May agreed with Stafford that distinguishing between toxic and edible fungi could be difficult, even for specialists. There were no simple rules to make such a distinction, he agreed.

Stafford showed 10 photographs of mushrooms, later all revealed to be death caps, to May, asking whether he could identify each one.

May said that all 10 images showed mushrooms which were “consistent” with death caps, but that he felt he could say that with more likelihood in some cases than others.

He said that in all cases he would be asking for more information than the single photo.

He agreed that the exercise demonstrated the difficulties of performing such an identification using one photograph.

May was also taken to work he had published, including a book he co-authored, Wild Mushrooming: A Guide for Foraging and another study of which he was a co-author, which focused on how certain apps used for foraging mushrooms were incorrectly identifying species.

One of those apps was iNaturalist, the court heard, specifically in relation to a feature which used AI.

May said the study occurred because the use of the apps was increasing, and he agreed that there was also evidence that foraging for mushrooms had become more popular in Victoria, and that may be linked to the pandemic.

May’s cross-examination will continue on Wednesday.

The jury was also shown photos on Tuesday of leftovers of the beef wellington lunch, which it heard were transported to Melbourne with Patterson via ambulance.

It also heard from two further witnesses who said Patterson told them the mushrooms used in the beef wellington were partially sourced from an Asian grocer.

Dr Varuna Ruggoo, an emergency physician at Monash Health who assessed Patterson on 1 August 2023, said she appeared clinically well at this time.

She said a review of Patterson undertaken by a colleague earlier that day concluded “there was no evidence of any sort of liver toxicity and that she was stable to be discharged”.

Notes from the same colleague indicated that Patterson was not suffering from amanita phalloides – death cap mushroom – poisoning, Ruggoo said.

The trial continues.

“The management commentary across the board is by and large still somewhat weakish to at best neutral in most cases. So, we still are not really in a good news environment. The good news would be when I guess earnings really start delivering and you start seeing good earnings growth coming through,” says Pratik Gupta, Kotak Institutional Equities.

What is your view on the way how markets are set up and do you think we are reaching what could be called as peak of good news?
Pratik Gupta: I am not sure we are at the peak of good news as yet because frankly, there is still plenty to come. The earnings environment is still actually very weak, so we cannot call it good news.

The management commentary across the board is by and large still somewhat weakish to at best neutral in most cases. So, we still are not really in a good news environment. The good news would be when I guess earnings really start delivering and you start seeing good earnings growth coming through.

At Kotak we are expecting the Nifty earnings growth to be just about 10% in the current year. We have seen a series of downgrades in the last few weeks and over the earning season. The good news is definitely in terms of I guess tariffs and geopolitics.

There definitely I guess there is a lot of optimism that things have settled down and the worst is over. But what definitely in our view investors globally are still very worried about a sharp global slowdown.


Just the uncertainty caused by the tariff environment that itself will create issues in terms of economic growth globally which in turn as far as India is concerned that impacts us relatively less, which explains why a lot of foreigners are still interested in India, but nonetheless our exports will get impacted, the merchandise trade exports and slowing global economy that hits us. On the flip side, we do benefit from lower oil prices, lower commodity prices, so that is helping for example a lot of our consumer companies or the companies where oil and oil derivatives are an input cost, so we have seen some benefit to margins. But generally, we think there are still many more things to look out for. For example, the RBI’s liquidity support, the lower interest rate environment. Hopefully, we will have a good monsoon. We are hoping that in the next few quarters finally the consumption slowdown that we have been seeing post monsoon that should start picking up. The private capex cycle has been frankly dead, so that should pick up.

And two very important factors – one is, all of last year we have seen a slowdown in the growth rate in government capex, that hopefully will start picking up after the monsoons. We have got a new bunch of finance ministry bureaucrats who are at the helm and hopefully they will drive things a bit more. And second is the regulatory environment.

You have got new regulators at the RBI, SEBI and likely at the IRDA as well. And generally, the mantra seems to be make it easier to do business, reduce compliance cost, all the players were sort of suffering. So, to that extent that also helps. The fly in the ointment is, of course, valuations, that unfortunately we still trade at very expensive valuations, so that is the thing that is holding markets, that is keeping investors away to some extent.

So, what could be the next big trigger as we say?
Pratik Gupta: There is nothing visible as such. One trigger I could think of is potentially, for example, on Friday we saw India’s sovereign rating upgrade by Morningstar, now that is a relatively one of the smaller rating agencies, but you start seeing perhaps six to nine months later some of the bigger guys like S&P and Moody’s upgrading India.

That is a very big positive as and when that happens. Otherwise you have to literally wait for the private capex cycle to pick up which frankly was being held back because of uncertainties on either domestic politics last year, or tariffs or geopolitics whether you see China dumping and so on and that has been sort of held back last, I would say, three-four quarters that has been slowing down.

Any single big thing which I can think of off hand. Just one thing, the big thing to look out for is in our conversations with global investors, as you know emerging markets as an asset class has underperformed the US in particular for the last 10-15 years and finally, the weakening of the US dollar and a crack in the US equity bubble especially the tech mega caps in the US, we are beginning to see some incremental investments being made away from the US and we are seeing this helping especially some of the European markets, the Hong Kong, China markets and even India you have seen the last few weeks with the exception of Friday when we had geopolitical concerns, India has also benefited through some FII inflows.

So, as we progress in the year, the next big thing could perhaps be renewal in emerging market flows. The timing of that is very difficult to predict whether it happens three months later, six months later, nine months later.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Pachuca won its first Liga MX Femenil Apertura championship 3-2 on aggregate over America despite a 2-0 loss in the return leg on Monday.

Irene Guerrero, a midfielder who plays for Spain’s national team, and striker Scarlett Camberos scored goals for America but it wasn’t quite enough for the Aguilas to overcome a 3-0 deficit from the first leg of the final series.

Pachuca had lost in its three previous appearances in finals series, in the Apertura 17 and the Clausura 2022 and ’23 tournaments.

“It was fundamental to have won at home. We did not come here to defend the lead, but America played great and pushed us,” said Pachuca’s goalkeeper Esthefanny Barreras, who was voted the Player of the Match. “It’s a nice and historic moment to win the first title for us.”

The women’s professional league in Mexico played its first season in 2017 a nd it has kept growing in popularity.

America was trying to capture its third title. The Mexico City based team has lost four of the last six finals series.

Yogurt parfaits from Knockroe Inc. have sparked a nationwide recall over concerns of undeclared almonds.

Newsweek reached out to the company via phone Monday evening for comment and left a voicemail.

Why It Matters

Numerous recalls have been initiated in 2025 due to the potential for the following: damaged products, foodborne illness, contamination and undeclared food allergens.

Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or food allergies every year. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the nine “major” food allergens in the U.S. are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, Crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts.

People with almond allergies or sensitivities who consume them could experience mild symptoms including swollen lips and hives to a potential life-threatening reaction including anaphylaxis, the FDA warns.

What To Know

According to the FDA in an alert on Monday, the company announced the recall of the “Bonya” brand yogurt due to undeclared almonds potentially being in the product, specifically the additional granola packaged with yogurt.

The agency notes that the 12-ounce yogurts were distributed nationwide to retail stores and have an expiration date of May 5, 2025.

Photos of the impacted products are posted by the FDA in the alert. No illnesses have been reported as of Monday, the agency adds.

The recall was initiated after the product was discovered to not have a label revealing it contained almonds. The FDA alert says that following an investigation, it was discovered that there was a “temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.”

The FDA on its website in March, in part: “People with food allergies should read labels and avoid the foods they are allergic to. The law requires that food labels identify the food source of all major food allergens used to make the food. This requirement is met if the common or usual name of an ingredient already identifies that allergen’s food source name (for example, buttermilk).”

The agency added, “The law also requires that the type of tree nut (for example, almonds, pecans, walnuts), and the species of fish (for example, bass, flounder, cod) and Crustacean shellfish (for example, crab, lobster, shrimp) to be declared. The allergen’s food source must be declared at least once on the food label in one of two ways.”

The NFL has begun releasing bits and pieces of the 2025 regular-season schedule, leading up to the full schedule release on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Arizona time.

Some of these impact the Arizona Cardinals. Others do not.

2025 NFL schedule leaks, reveals

2025 season opener: The league announced the season opener where the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles kick off the season at home is a divisional game. They host the Dallas Cowboys.

Week 17 prime-time streaming-only game: In week 17, two teams will play a Saturday night game on Dec. 27 in a matchup that will be exclusively on Peacock, NBC’s streaming platform. Peacock already has an exclusive playoff game and have the exclusive rights to the game played in Brazil in Week 1.

Week 16 Saturday doubleheader on FOX: With college football in bowl season, the NFL tries to fill some of the Saturday television space in December. In Week 16, there will be a Saturday doubleheader on FOX. In one game, the Eagles will face the Washington Commanders on the road, while the other game has the Green Bay Packers visiting the Chicago Bears.

Christmas Day matchup: In what is now becoming a Christmas Day tradition, the NFL will have a game that is exclusively on Netflix. That game will have the Denver Broncos visiting the Kansas City Chiefs.

Black Friday game: After the Thanksgiving games, the NFL will have one game on Black Friday with the Chicago Bears on the road against the Eagles. That game will be exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on November 28.
