Winter Wardrobe Audit

At the beginning of winter season I compiled my winter wardrobe. I am not strict on having a 10 (or any other fixed number) item wardrobe but I noticed that I feel better when my wardrobe is not jam-packed. I keep all my out-of-season clothes in boxes and at the beginning of the season I select a number of items to put in my wardrobe for the upcoming season. Since I read a book Dressing Nifty After Fifty by Corinne Richardson several years ago, I use her suggestion to start planning one's wardrobe from making a list of activities during a two week period. I find this idea very helpful. I didn't repeat this exercise last autumn since I have done it already after retirement and my list of activities haven't changed since.
Anyway at the end of the winter season I decided to review how my assigned winter wardrobe worked, to make an analysis what I have actually wore and what items got little wear, and then decide what items I need to add or replace for the next winter.
Here are the core items from this year winter wardrobe.
Three bottoms - black pencil skirt, warm dark grey trousers and black trousers that are not that warm and more dressy. All three items are me-made.

Four tops - me-made bow tie blouse that I have refashioned, two knit-work tops and a shirt.

Four knit cardigans - pink, brown, black and dark grey. All cardigans are store bought except the dark grey one. Grey cardigan is recycled Asma cardigan that I didn't wear.

All in all my core winter wardrobe counts 11 items but the grey cardigan was added only in February, so at least half of the season it was a Ten-Item Wardrobe.

I calculated that it makes 33 different outfits. I should say that I felt quite comfortable with it and it took me through most of my winter activities rather well. I could compile a casual or more formal outfit from these eleven items.
There were some extra items of course for special occasions like Christmas etc. I also don't count T-shirts (two T-shirts - black and white) and home-wear. Since we have central heating and the outside air temperatures are very low I always change clothes when I go out or come home.

I know that many people do this exercise at the beginning of the season and I have done this before as well. I still have to decide about my summer clothes. In previous years I started planning my summer wardrobe already in February and for me it worked perfectly well. Since I aim to sew and knit the most part of my wardrobe I need some time to make things. This year I am a little behind but it is still early spring here. Spring is late this year, we still have zero temperatures and even had a little bit of snow today.

Beauty, Books and Inspiration

I've been feeling a little bit down lately. Since the end of the winter after all snow has gone we have such an ugly weather, everything is so grey, dull and dirty. It was return of snowfall for a week, then followed by a week of rainy, windy and cold weather. On top of it the news lines every day make me sick. I am so desperate for beauty. Seeing beautiful pictures of lush greenery and blue skies on the blogs I follow is a real treat.
It made me seeking some inspiration and thinking about how can people create beauty in life when they have no influence on their milieu. I was looking for some inspiration and role models that I can follow.
First one that came to my mind was the Virgin Mary. She lived in the city of Nazareth in the middle of the desert and the family was poor. I've been trying to imagine her everyday environment and how she lived. I am sure she managed to turn into beauty everything she touched.
My second choice of inspiration is my all times favorite "Jane Eyre", especially the chapter when she moved in a small school cottage in Morton. Jane Eyre has always been my favourite heroine, since my childhood.
My other favorite book is "Little Women". I like reading the description of their modest but cozy living room, how they plan presents for their mother and how they manage their resources.
Another favourite of mine is a novel by Nina Fedorova "The Family". It has been published in 1940 and I guess it hasn't been reprinted since that time but I can't recommend it more. It's a real gem. "The family" is a fragments of a big aristocratic family who live in exile in China after the 1917 Russian revolution. A Grandmother, a Mother, a young granddaughter and two nephews. They have literally no money but remain so beautiful in their attitude towards each other and outer world, show such a wonderful example of christian love and support to those in need and devotion to their friends. I think this book deserves five stars. If you ever have a chance to read it, I can't recommend it more.

What inspires you?

It has been really long time since I last wrote in my blog. Now I feel that I am getting my blogging mojo back. Partly due to reading interesting and thought provoking posts in a number of blogs that I follow. After reading them I feel a desire to echo back.
During my absence I have had several major changes in my lifestyle that required time to adjust to them. I went in retirement and my son got married. Both events were no surprise and long foreseen. Now I don't work and take care about my mother who is 86, and my son lives very far from me. My new lifestyle asks for a different wardrobe, more casual style, a wardrobe for a homemaker. This is very foreign for me so I need to learn a lot.
Last but not least addition to my life are two rescued cats.

That's enough about past and now about what I would like to aspire in my sewing/knitting projects.
I am into making a lot of recycling / upcycling. Make do and mend is my motto now. There are several reasons for it. Not only because I am naturally thrifty and hate waste but also for economical reasons, as well as for educational reason. If I don't wear the garment (and I have a lot of these) means that I've made a wrong choice, either of style or pattern or material (fabric, yarn). Another option is that it doesn't fit my current lifestyle. I am determined to have all my garments wearable and to learn to "see" the best use for the fabric (yarn), to be able to identify the pattern that will be the best use for the fabric. I have already an example of successful recycling that I am going to show in one of future posts. Another goal is to finally create a harmonious and well curated wardrobe where all pieces go well together.
I guess that now my blog will be focused not only on sewing and knitting but also at frugal living while after retirement the resources are scarce. Nevertheless my aim is to live in retirement with dignity, elegance and joy.
I bought a flower today and the cats have already trimmed it :).

I think I have to sow some oats for them. Unfortunately they don't eat the grass that I buy for them in a pet shop.

Knitted Christmas Presents

After the busy Christmas time when I worked as a tourist guide for my visiting friends, I am finally ready to show knitted and crochet projects that I made as Christmas presents. Both knitted scarfs are Kim Hargreaves's designs. I noticed that I become more and more addicted to her books. I like how precise and carefully elaborated they are. Not to mention classical and very British style of her patterns.
После суматошных новогодних каникул, когда я выполняла роль гида для своих гостей, я наконец могу похвастаться вязаными подарками, которые я приготовила к Новому году. Это два вязаных шарфа, оба по дизайнам Ким Харгривз. Мне все больше и больше нравятся её модели, особенно то, как тщательно и детально составлены описания. Кроме того, мне близок сдержанный и консервативный (или классический) стиль её моделей.

Adore scarf from book Misty. I used two skeins of Lanosa Chinchilla (~ 500 meter in total), needles # 5. This scarf is very delicate and airy.

The second present is also scarf but is a completely different one, very thick and warm. The pattern is Thunder from Shadows book. The yarn is Rowan Cocoon, 3,5 skeins knitted on needles # 6,5. I call it Thunder in Tundra because yarn colour called Tundra.

Второй шарф - полная противоположность, очень теплый и толстый. Пряжа Кокон от Рован, ушло 3,5 мотка, осталось еще на шапочку. Цвет пряжи называется Тундра :), то, что надо для нашего климата :).

The third present is not for a person but for my kitchen :). Since I try to get rid of yarn leftovers I used some of them to crochet place mats. The pattern is a free DROPS design .

Третий подарок я сделала для своей кухни. Т.к. стараюсь освобождаться от остатков пряжи, связала крючком вот такие коврики для кухонного стола. Описание на сайте Дропс.

Also as a part of stash busting made this little pulse warmers. I had very little leftover of kidsilk and I found this mittens to utilise it.

Заодно покажу еще один маленький проектик, для утилизации остатков пряжи. У меня было совсем чуть-чуть кид силка, куда-то хотелось пристроить. Нашлись вот эти митенки.

Winter Knitting

Winter came to Moscow and we have already a lot of snow. I hear often "you live in Russia and you are accustomed to cold", but No, I am not, I like feel warm and cosy.
This year I made another scarf for myself. It is more than two meters long and very warm and makes a nice wrap. I tried to use this yarn in some other patterns but they didn't get much wear so I decided to find it a proper use finally. I work on cleaning my yarn stash and try to use the remainders of yarn from previous projects.
The pattern for the scarf is Heath by Kim Hargreaves.

To the scarf I added a new hat. The pattern is from some French magazine.

Sheath Dress (Burda 9/2012-109)

I envy people who know how to choose the best pattern for the particular fabric. I don't have this talent and for me it's always a gamble and the result is a surprise. With sheath dress from September issue of Burda magazine the sirprise turned out to be a pleasant one. The fabric didn't need any complicated pattern to show off. At the same time this pattern has some interesting details like a boat neckline and long side darts that spice it up.

The dress is versatile and can be dressed up and down. No wonder, this apply to sheath dresses, that's why they are so popular.

Gray vs.Grey (Chaise & Asma by Kim Hargreaves)

It's time to sweep dust from my blog. I didn't write for quite a wile without any apparent reason. I made very little sewing last summer but did make some knitting. Since the season for summer knits has passed already I will follow the weather and give an account of winter knits.

Both patterns are from Kim Hargreaves books. First one is Chaise from Winter Blooms. Last year when I was in Venice I bought two gorgeous yarns (I try not to think about the price though). The first one is pure cashmere from Grignasco.

It became a Chaise, A Most Classic Sweater, as it defined in Kim Hargreaves book. That's exactly what I was aiming at. When the yarn is so precious the design should be classical and very simple.

Another yarn that I brought from Venice is Filatura Di Crosa Superior, a softest blend of cashmere and silk. It's of gorgeous colour of hyacinth. I bought only two skeins and they are still waiting for some beautiful scarf/shawl pattern.

The second project is Asma from the last KH book Enchanted. The yarn is from my stash, a blend of wool, alpaca and acrylic. I like 3/4 sleeves as at the model picture

but in my case it turned out almost long sleeve. I don't know what's the reason, I followed the pattern instruction to the letter.

I very much like the buttons, they add charm to this otherwise quite simple model. Difficult to take pictures of them because of glitter.

That's it for the moment. I knitted and crochetted some small things as I am cleaning up my yarn stash and getting rid of yarn leftovers, try to keep my stash lean and organised. I've also finished one sewing project lately, another dress, will show it as soon as I take pictures. The dress is from Burda magazine 9/2012-109.

Pansy Pincushion

Since I took up sewing I didn't have a proper thing to stick pins into. Finally I decided to change the situation and make a pretty pincusion. It is cross stitched and decorated with gold thread and beads. The only problem is that I hesitate to stick pins into it :).

My LBD is ready and I am absolutely happy about it. I already know that it will become irreplaceable in my wardrobe. It could be dressed up and down, and would pass for any occasion. Exactly what someone needs for a minimalist wardrobe.

I made two amendments to this pattern. First, I scipped the pockets as usually. Second, I added full lining.
The most difficult part was to take pictures since black doesn't allow to see any details.

One more thing I am happy about is how darts and seams meet :)

Wrap Dress (Burda 5/2006-115)

Wrap dress is ready and I am pretty happy with the result. Didn't make any changes, except little fitting of the sleeve's head. Unfortunately the design of the fabric doesn't allow to see the details of the pattern, like lovely folds at the skirt.
I wear a spaghetti strap vest top underneath since the neck is low as usually with Burda patterns. I decided on this option when I was just considering this pattern. Actually the low neck was one of the reasons why I hesitated sewing this dress.
The fabric is rayon knit.

Though it is still snowing here and the temperatures are below zero I am in the mood for warm weather sewing and knitting. I would like to make a sleeveless LBD that I could wear with a jacket in winter and on its own in summer. I am thinking about this dress from the February issue of the Burda Moden magazine.

"Haste Makes Waste"

I reworked the jersey dress I complained about in the previous post.

The reason for that bubble at the back was that I soaked the cloth before sewing and hang it to dry. The sides of the fabric stretched and I cut it as it was. What a fool I was! This kind of things happens when I want to finish a garment quickly, usually in one day. I sew mostly on weekends and sometimes delaying half-ready garment for another week just burns my hands. 'Haste makes waste' as they say.
So I had to spend extra time unripping the back, removing the zipper and steam ironing the back to return it to a normal size. It's amazing how ironing could make miracles to sewing!
I didn't put the zipper back because I can easily get into the dress without it. But I added lining made from thin rayon knit and now I am more or less content with the result.
The dress is very comfortable and I wore it several times already.

I've been thinking about making a little black dress next but spontaneously bought another knitted fabric and have already started a wrap dress. It is a variation of Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress.
HeathersSphere from SEWspicious Minds recently published a nice collection of patterns for wrap dresses. I don't have access to all these patterns so I turned to my collection of Burda Moden magazines. I am going to use the pattern #115 from 5/2006.

This is a fabric I am going to use for this dress. My camera can't capture the real colour, in reality it is darker and has more khaki hue.

I decided not to rush with this dress but make everything slowly and very accurately.

Some new finished knitting projects. A new hat and scarf for my son since it was rather cold here. I used free patterns from Junghans-Wolle web site. I like their patterns, they are so clear and precise, it is always a pleasure to use them and they turn out well.

A Swarm of Spiders Cardigan and Where's my mojo?

My blog was rather quiet for a while. As many others I ran astray due to holiday's season but the real reason is that I was discouraged by failure of my last sewing project. However during this time I completed two knitting projects and here is the first one.
The pattern is from the Italian knitting magazine Mani di Fata (April 2007).

On the sewing side I've completed a new jersey dress using a pattern from November 2011 issue of Diana Moden magazine.

Here's my dress

The pattern is not difficult at all BUT I made a mistake and here's how the back looks like. It has a bubble on the back and the top end of the zip perks out.

I need to unstitch the back and change everything now. It sits this way since end of November and I don't start any other projects because I know that if I'll start a new one I'll never come back to fix this one. I wore it once though and found out that it needs lining as well. I have already bought a knitted lining fabric but again, lining doesn't come easy to me. Yet another reason to hesitate and postpone.
Ending on the positive note, I am ready to fix this setback at last because I want to move to some other projects already.

Hope to come back soon with the amended dress and the second knitting project.

Ruby Silk Shell (Burda 04/2011-114)

I bought this ruby Chinese silk with jacquard pattern because I just felt that I must own it. It is not the colour I normally wear and would never use it to make a full attire, so I decided to use it to accessorise my "parade" black RTW suit.
I used the pattern from April issue of Burda magazine, only lengthened it several centimeters.

Here is my shell. The picture with the suit shows the original colour best of all.

I still find this Carmen red-black combination too dramatic for my colouring, should try this shell with other pieces in my wardrobe and probably find better combinations.
Here is a closer look to the accessories. Christmas tree brooche I've bought years ago from Harrod's and Venice glass earrings.

The picture was taken at the residence of the French Ambassador in Moscow. I always wanted to see inside of this building, which I think is the one of the prettiest houses in Moscow. It reminds a gingerbread house. Here are some pictures of the outside view.

Very Simple Summer Dress (Burda 6/2011-107)

The Christmas is around the corner and I am still posting about summer projects :). I admit I haven't been blogging actively lately.

After sewing several flowery projects for Summer I finally got a desire for some one-colour and very plain pattern. I made a choice in favour of this dress from June issue of Burda magazine.

The fabric is rayon but it is so soft and nice to touch that feels like silk. The colour is pale gray blue and has jacquard pattern.

Though it looks very simple it was rather expensive. When I've just started sewing I was hesitant to buy expensive fabrics because was not sure that I will not spoil them with my sewing. I wonder about other dressmakers, when you've started sewing, did you spend money on expensive fabrics or like me opted for budget cloth?

But some fabrics are so appealing that I just can't resist buying them. Together with this blue rayon I bought a piece of ruby Chinese silk. Normally I don't wear that bright colours but that one was so beautiful, I couldn't keep myself from owning it. I will report about this project next time.

So here is the finished dress. The pattern is very simple, literally only a couple of stitches.

I am very happy with this dress. I made it in August and had a chance to wear it a couple of times before Autumn arrived. It is very simple and understated but it immediately became my favourite out of all summer sewing projects.

Jersey Dress (Burda 8/2011-116)

I haven't been posting much last time so I still have some things to report about that I made at the end of summer.

This simple dress with small kimono sleeves and hanging collar I finished in August but didn't even had a chance to wear it, the weather turned to the autumn so fast.

Not much to report about this dress, the stitching was fast and easy. Except for my first attempt to make it using other fabric which ended in turning into a top :).
After this first failure I researched all finished versions of this model at Burda web site forum and decided that mine should be made from very thin and flowing jersey.
The only problem with this sort of jersey was that the collar just hanged flat without making nice drapes which is the main feature of this dress. To overcome this I added fusible interfacing to the collar. And I didn't make pockets in side seams.

As for the rest I just followed the instructions.

Now I only have to wait till the next summer when I could wear this dress.

Knitted Top (Diana Moden)

I don't use original Diana patterns much but this one was could change my opinion. It is simple, didn't need any alterations and fits nicely.
I would love to write that I was going to sew the long sleeves top from the beginning but this would be untruth. This beautiful knit border fabric was expected to become this Burda pattern. I did make this dress later using another fabric, will post about it in a different post.

But I couldn't fit the pattern into the piece of fabric that I had and to coordinate it with the border print.
So I cut the dress from the La Mia Boutique magazine 03/2011-12 (ШиК 8/2011).

Even though I added 1,5 cm on each side seam which in total makes 6 cm the dress was tight in hip area and fit badly (even with my bottom measurements being smaller than LMB measurement scale). With my previous exciting experience with LMB knit dress I was quiet relaxed when started with this pattern. The pattern was not only very tight but has a very peculiar sleeves as well. So I left with a cut piece of the lovely fabric. I trasformed it to the top from Diana magazine and it worked like miracle. Not only the top fits well but the sewing was relaxing and fast, actual stitching took not more than two or three hours. I didn't have enough fabric left for long sleeves and had to add cuffs. They are still a bit short but I can live with it.
I love this fabric in top pattern even more than when it was a dress and as a bonus it coordinate well with my long knitted vest that I showed here.

I enjoyed working with linen, such a wonderful fabric. I would love to sew something from linen for myself as well. The only problem that it wrinkles so easily, so it would be something very casual, for vacation wardrobe.

Two other small projects are the hat and the pot holder. The pattern for the hat is Simplicity 5581.

Burda 08/1989

The pot holder was my first try on patch-work. I chose this very small project just to see how to do this. This pattern was published in Burda magazine 08/1989 along with some other lovely bigger projects.

Besides trying quilting this project satisfied my inclination for recycling and nonwaste living. Maybe it is because I was raised by my grandmother who survived revolution and two wars and used to save everything, or just my inborn sense of responsibility but I hate wasting things. So I made this potholder from scraps of fabric that I used for my sewing projects.

Salad Dress (Burda 7/2011-110)

During first summer months Moscow hosted the exhibition “Inspiration Dior” .

Goes without saying that I visited it. Some dresses in vintage Dior collections had names. So I decided to copy this and to name my new project :).
The name Salad Dress comes from one of the dresses at the exhibition (please forgive me, Mr. Dior).

So here is my Salad dress from July issue of Burda magazine. The camera didn't capture the true colour. In reality it is light yellowish green.

I cut size 19 petite (means 38 regular) and I feel comfortable in it but when I look at the picture I see that the top looks baggy. Again I am struggling with Burda measurements.
Good news is that is the first time when I am really happy with making the invisible zipper. Seems I finally managed to become friends with that special invisible zipper foot.

It was not a smooth sewing though. Initially I wanted to make very simple solid colour dress using this pattern.

But then I decided that it will be too simple and chose another pattern. Now I regret of not going with my first intention. Still have a desire to make light solid colour dress in a very simple cut.
My second choice was this dress.

Burda 4/2010-108

I wanted to make it since it has been published in 2010 but couldn't find fabric that would drape well. I tried this fabric and it seemed that it would work. I cut out back and front pieces of the dress, basted and tried it on, and it looked like a maternity dress. Not an effect I wanted to get :/.

Since the fabric had been cut already I had a choice either to put it in a trash bin or to try to rescue it with some other pattern. So the choice of the pattern was somehow limited. I managed to squeeze this pattern in previously cut pieces of fabric and in what remained uncut.

It is a petit pattern so I lengthened the top a couple of centimeters. Now I doubt the necessity of doing this. Otherwise made no alterations, just added lining to the skirt since the fabric wrinkles easily.

One more picture from Dior exhibition that I would like to share. Shoes collection, I would wear any pair of these beautiful shoes anytime :). The green ones at the top left would suit my new dress ;).

Unpacking Me-Made Vacation Wardrobe

When I received February issue of Burda magazine and was hooked by its Italian pages I didn't know that I am going to have Italian vacation this year. But Burda continued Italian theme in May issue and I sewed another piece from these pages. As I moved on with my sewing, vacation idea gradually materialized and became tangible. At the end of June I was lucky to spend one week in Venice, the unreal fairy tale city. I was absorbing it with all my sences and enjoyed every single minute.
Here are the Me-Made garments that I took on this vacation trip.

Summer Dress (Burda 2/2011-101)

This pants have loose fit that makes them very comfortable for travelling.

Hat

I made this hat just a couple of days before the trip more for fun than for practical reason but it came out very useful for trip on the motorboat to and from airport since it was very windy.
It is made from leftover Ikea fabric (after making this pillow). The hat pattern is from Burda Easy Fashion Summer 2008 magazine. Easy project, took me not more than two hours to make it.

I also wore this combination of lacy mohair jacket and sundress in the evenings, no photos though.
It was nice to wear Me-Made garments though they are yet far from being perfect. And of course the trip inspired me to make more sewing plans.

Tunic Top (Burda 5/2011-103)

A simple silk summer tunic. It is made from the old silk dress which was not old but never worn and then went out of fashion. Since it is wonderful natural silk I couldn't just throw it away and wanted to use it to make something new for hot summer weather.
