Calling all quilters!!!!

Do you have WIP's and UFO's laying around, or are you just itching to make a new quilt? If the answer is yes then this is for you!

Sarah over at Confessions of a Fabric addict is hosting the annual Hands2Help event over on her blog. She has been hosting this event since 2011 and it keeps growing. So far with Sarah's and all those who have signed up 420 quilts have been sent to some amazing charities.

You can check out Sarah's blog to find all of this years amazing charities. I am going to sign up and will most likely be helping out

They help out 911 telecommunicators and their families and since I was a 911 telecommunicator and still work for the police department this is a perfect way for me to give back to my work community.

Signs up are from March 15th through March 21st. You do not have to have a blog to participate!

I am excited to be a part of Hands2Help again this year and hope to see you all there too!

August Bee Blocks

I've been a busy bee! I recently completed all my bee blocks for the month of August, so I could free up some time for other projects in the works.

First up is the Newbee Hive #7 block. The Queen wanted a Wonky Pinwheel block with a color scheme of grey, pink and yellow.

I have been wanting to try this block out for quite some time, so I was excited my hive mate picked it for her month. It was very easy and fun to make. I love the color scheme, and I am not a big fan of yellow but this is just pretty.

I also completed my ThreadDivas bee block for August. The Queen requested a Donut Block, she provided the instructions. Her color scheme was red and white. She was gracious enough to send us out the small red squares for the block so that we could match colors for her red and white quilt to be.

I love the red she chose. It's a deep cranberry red. I made up some small pinwheel blocks with the cut off corners of the snowballed blocks to send along. I am excited to see her quilt finished. I have added a red and white quilt to my "to do" list. I don't know about you but my "to do" list is an ever growing one. I'll be lucky to finish it up by the time I'm 95.

I've also been working on a Union Jack Pillow for the Pillow Pop Sew Along on ThreadBias. I did mine a little different than in the book but I am happy with the results so far.

Instead of making a bunch of little Union Jack's I made one big one for the front. You can find the pattern over at Mollie Sparkles blog here. I should be finishing this up soon!

I have a lot more planned to do this week, but we will see how that goes as this is also the first week back to school for the kiddos. Yikes!! Wish us all luck!

I've been away from the blog for awhile busy working on packing up my house for the big move. I have been sewing when I can in between cardboard boxes and sorting and cleaning. I have a baby blanket under way for one of my Mom's coworkers. They are expecting a little girl. So I decided to use some Up Parasol by Heather Bailey.

I just love this line it's so pretty and feminine. I decided to go with the Churn Dash block because it's one of my favorites and it is so versatile.

I've also been working on the Mini Medallion being hosted over at Clover and Violet along with Sew Lux Fabric. There is a new post each month with directions for each section of the Medallion. I got caught up and have the first two sections finished.

I am excited to see what this looks like when its finished, its my first Medallion.

I also joined a Birthday Swap over on Flickr. The July Birthday girl had a room done in the theme of Peacocks. So I made a mini quilt with those colors in mind and sent some other little treasures along.

I used a mixture of Kona and AMB solids and just a few pieced of some peacock fabric that I had left over from another project.

Economy Blocks

I have recently been making up some fun economy blocks. I have not decided what I am going to do with them all yet, but am leaning towards making an I spy quilt with them.

This is my first try at any kind of paper piecing. I really loved the process of it, once I figured it out. These were very addictive and there are so many possibilities.

I love the little frogs! They are my favorite, probably because I collect them.

I don't usually have a lot of fussy cut friendly fabrics on hand, I will definitely need to add to my stash because these were just to fun to make.

Sunday Stash

I hope everyone enjoyed their holiday weekend in the states! I know mine was busy and filled with family, friends, and beautiful fireworks.

I picked up these lovelies for the Color Brick Swap I'm hosting.

First up Orange, which is a color that is lacking in my stash.

The bottom print is from the Daydreams collection by Kate Spain, its Reflections in Persimmon. In the middle is of course some lovely Happy Go Lucky- Jump in orange by Bonnie and Camille. And last but not least is the Tapestry mosaic in Tangerine.

Next up- Grey

The top and middle prints are from the Flats collection, top is Diamond Rings in Slate and the middle is Polka dots in Stone. Love these prints. On the bottom is Grey Honeycomb from the Shades of black, again one of my favorites.

Last but not least- Low Volume

I picked up some Paris Flea Market-Paris map in china white, along with some Boho in Basic Earth. The top print is from the Barcelona line, City map in Crème. I'm in love with map fabric right now. Its kind of an obsession of mine at the moment.

Mystery swap update.

"Monday, Monday so good to me..."

I wanted to update you all on the Mystery Swap. First off thank you to all who filled out the questionnaire. I received some really good feed back. Most of you liked Spain the best, sorry Morocco. I have made some changes per all of your feedback.

So due to popular demand I am going to open the Summer Vacation Swap- Theme: Spain, to 56 participants. Each participant will be responsible for 1 yard of fabric that goes with the theme. Each yard will be cut into 56 - 5" charm squares. Each participant may sign up for up to two slots, possibly more depending on how fast we fill up. You must have a flickr account and can sign up here.

Fabric can be based on color or the inspiration board, a design that goes with the theme and so on. The only No, No's would be NO kids prints or batiks. Fabrics need to be vibrant and spicy! Pretty simple right. I will post mail dates once the swap is full.

Now for the best part fabric inspiration!!

Friday Finsh and a Winner!!

It's Friday, and that means its time for a finish and a winner! Recently Lorna of Sew Fresh Quilts was asking for pattern testers for her Ombre Studio Mini Quilts, and I jumped at the opportunity! I choose to work on the Quilt mini. I picked a Kona Roll up-Sunrise, and used Kona white for the back ground. The patten was a breeze! As I was making it I thought that either would make a great mini quilt or even a pillow, and I'm sure many of you could come up with even other ways to use this great patten. Here's what I came up with.

For the back I used left over strips from my Kona Roll to make a Kansas Sunrise. I also used the scraps for the binding.

WIP-Charity Quilts

Happy Humpday! This week I have been working on getting the tops put together from some star bee blocks that I received. The first one is Scrap Jar Stars pattern by A Little Bit Biased. I have seen this block a lot lately and really liked it. I had asked for a Brown, Orange and Aqua color theme for the blocks as I really like this color combo.

The second is the Inverted Star block by Common Threads a free pattern on Craftsy. I also asked for the same color theme on these blocks.

I have backs picked out for both, so now I just need to get them basted and quilted. These will be going to Happy Chemo.

Today is all about Kona Solids. I personally love Kona in all colors. I recently purchased this lovely stack for a swap. I wanted to choose some colors I had not used before.

The colors from left to right: Royal, Persimmon, Pomegranate, and Wasabi. I just love all of these, they are so bright and cheery. The Royal looked more blue online but when it arrived I noticed it really is more on the purple shade. The Persimmon and Pomegranate are just rich and vibrant. I found the Wasabi to be my favorite. Its just the right amount of limey green without being neon like. This is a short and sweet post, as its been a long busy weekend here! Happy Monday.

Morocco or Spain- Mystery Swap

It's Summer and officially vacation time. I was thinking it would be fun to have a Summer Vacation themed Mystery Swap. Mystery Swap, what's that you say? Basically there would be a preselected theme, in this case Summer Vacation, I would select the fabrics, cut them into charms, and send them to you. I am currently securing the best price possible for fabric, and the shipping would be included in the charm pack price. I will be posting more about that as soon as I get it sorted out. I will be offering full charm packs-112 charms, and half charm packs-56 charms with limited spots. All fabric will be quilt shop quality.

This week has been busy, busy, busy! I'm ready for things to slow down just a bit, so the kids and I can enjoy the summer! This week I have been pattern testing for Lorna over at Sew Fresh Quilts.

Lorna recently inquired for some pattern testers on her blog for her Ombre Studio Sewing Studio mini quilt patterns. I offered to help her out. Lorna graciously sent me both patterns (I love to Sew and I love to Quilt) and said I could do one or both. I decided to do the I love the Quilt mini. I thought Kona solids would work great for the Ombre effect so I scoured the Internet for color inspiration. I ultimately chose this Kona roll up in Sunrise.

It reminds me of a Kansas sunrise. Love it!

The roll up worked out great as the pattern calls for strips. I had very little waste. I chose Kona white for the back ground.

Here are a couple of the pieces finished.

This has been a really fun pattern to put together.

I'm thinking of using the left over Kona roll up to make a scrappy back and binding. But as I kept putting pieces together I thought this might make a really nice pillow as well, so now I am torn, pillow or mini quilt?

I wanted to share something special with you all today. One of my favorite blogs is No Hats in the House written by Sarah Sharp. She is hosting a monthly color inspiration for quilt blocks. Each month she posts a color pallet and folks can make blocks with either all or just some of the colors in the pallet. You can pick any block you want as long as it is in the color range for the month.

The best part about these blocks is that they will be going to the foundation My Very Own Blanket. MVOB is a non-profit that provides blankets (quilts) to children in the foster care system in hopes that it will bring them comfort.

Isn't this wonderful! Well I thought so too! It's easy peasy, just head over to No Hats in the House and you can find the monthly color pallet postings in her side bar. You can send a few each month, or just one, or even send a few during the months you have time for extra sewing. It's raining here again, which is great for the plants and trees and well pretty much everything. However it barely lets up long enough to keep my yard from becoming a jungle! Seriously there could be wild animals out there.

While I'm warding off wild animals in my rain boots, I thought I would share a fabric bundle I created with you all.

Heather at Lark Cottons sponsored a mosaic contest using fabrics from her shop and the theme was Ethereal. The idea was to make a mosaic and then the top ten would be selected and then bloggers could vote for their favorite bundle. The first and second place winners would get there personal bundle for free and the bundles would be available for purchase in Heather's shop for others as well! What a deal right, so I had to try this out.

Ethereal for me evokes images of light, airy and vintage. I love pretty much anything vintage. So I made up this mosaic.

It took me a while to come up with this as there were so many wonderful fabrics to choose from, but ultimately I gravitated towards these beauties.

As I followed along in the contest, my bundle was picked as one of the top ten contenders. What!! I could not believe it. I finished in third place in the blogger vote and I was so excited that I about fell out of my chair when the results were posted. Now I know third place is not the winner, but I was honored that my fellow blog friends voted for my bundle!

So I went over to the Lark Cottons site to check out the winners bundles which can be found under Precuts and Bundles or by searching the key word Ethereal. When I arrived at that shop site I was surprised to find this:

Yup that's my bundle. I just knew I had to purchase it. So I did and it's even prettier in person. I would really love to make a beautiful quilt with it but I'm not sure I have the nerve to cut into it! It may end up along side my hoarded stash of Ghastlies, which I have yet to cut into, and just be admired safely out of the view of the rotary cutter.

OK so I joined the Star Light Star Bright QAL hosted by Melissa back in January (I didn't find this till February so I tried to play catch up), well it ended in April. I am still working on finishing this up. Yeah I know it's June now.

I started out pretty well, got all my pieces cut and even laid out a possible block option.

So at this point I started making my HST's and Geese and thought this is going to be a breeze! Then it hit me, I was going to have to lay out each block one at a time, UGH! I realized I needed to know which fabrics to pair of for the HST's and needed to make sure that my directional prints were facing the right way. So I carefully laid out two blocks and completed them.

I am happy with the way they both turned out, but let me tell you the stripe on the second block definitely gave me a few more grey hairs! I pinned, moved, rotated, and took pictures till I thought I had it just right and still had two spots I messed up. I'm not telling where they are!! I decided it just added charm to the block, at least that's what I'm going to tell myself! After this I decided to quit for the day, and I just never went back.

So after a long break I finally made some centers for some of the other blocks for the quilt.

Oh buggers there is that stripe again! I managed to at least get it going in the right direction this time!

4 down and 3 more to go. Then it will be time to make up and add the corners and sides. Wish me luck!!

Happy Mail, Quilters ADD and Rain Boots.

It's the middle of summer and I'm wearing rain boots!! We have had rain off and on for the last two weeks and it was down right chilly yesterday! Brrr!! One of the wonderful perks of living in Kansas, you never have to change out the clothes in your closet! One day the temp is 65 and the next it's 95. Oh the joys.

Thank goodness for Happy Mail! I received my first block for the Friendship Supernova Swap from Erica this week!

Isn't it GORGEOUS! I love how her first block came out. We decided to just "go with the flow" and not use any particular placing of the fabrics in the blocks. I love that we left all of this up to chance as the blocks are so diverse!

I also finished up my 2nd block for Erica this week.

I am really happy with how this one turned out with the exception of the center block, not sure it really fits. Here's pick of both my finished blocks together.

My first block is already in the mail to Erica, so she should be getting it soon! I hope she likes it!!

I also cut out the pieces for my first block for the swap, but that is as far as I got as my Quilters ADD kicked in after completing Erica's second block!

Do any of you suffer from Quilters ADD? Mine is the cause ...squirrel... of some UFO's sitting in a bucket in my sewing room. Yikes! Ah, well I will get to them sometime, right?

Well I'm going to pull up my rain boots and wade out to the mail box!! I'd love to hear about what your working on this week!

Sunday Stash! -#1

Charm packs galore! I added these lovelies to my stash this week courtesy of Southern Fabric! The charm packs are Heirloom in Ruby by Joel Dewberry. The tones are so rich and lovely in this line. I have a quick and easy project that I think these will work great in! I can't wait to get started. The little gems (mini's) are Daydream (love!!) by Kate Spain. One of these is destine for a journey to the west for a friend of mine. But its a secret, so don't tell!

After much debating I also scored this Kona Roll Up from Missouri Star Quilt Co.. It's full of red's, orange's, yellow's, pink's and green's! It reminds me of a Kansas sunrise overlooking a green wheat field in the early months of summer! This roll up has a mini quilt in its near future.

WIP-What sound does a Peacock make?/I'm the Queen!!

We made it! It's mid week, hump day, two days closer to the weekend and my Friday! Yipee! I'm back with the Garden Peacock, as she is still a WIP. I did get the top finished this week, whew! I am so happy with how she turned out!

My little Will, with his mixed matched jammas was front and center to help me get a pic. While his brother wanted to make sure I couldn't see him through the fabric. This Garden Peacock is on her way to becoming a full fledged quilt one day! I'm linking her up with Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday.

I'm also co-Queen this month with Paula in the Thread Divas Hive. Since everyone will be making two blocks this month I decided to go simple. I chose the Churn Dash block. This little block is so versatile. For my blocks I asked for a true white background with bright, boy suited colors for the churn dash portion. I used a great little tutorial from Sarah over at Sew Me

I just love the whales! Its perfect for a little boy! Thank you Connie!

My Co-Queen Paula requested flying geese with centers that coordinated with the 2wenty thr3e Collection by Eric and Julie Comstock of Cosmo Cricket for Moda.

Love this fabric! For the background she wanted either gray or low volume grays with a scrappy feel. Her Sister Wendy worked up a great tutorial for the big geese, you can find it here.

I had a charm pack of the 2wenty thr3e fabric but alas my little squares were not going to be big enough for the center part of the geese. So I raided my stash and found coordinating colors and some low volume greys. Here's what I came up with:

I just love how this block turned out. I don't want to give this one away! It will be headed out this week. I saved the clippings from my geese to make some HST's that I'll use in a future project!

I joined in the Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge, being hosted by Sarah at Confessions of a fabric addict, for the first time this year. After reading about this wonderful cause I knew I wanted to be a part of it. There were three charities to donate to: Quilts of Compassion, Hurricane Sandy Survivors, and Happy Chemo.

I chose to donate a quilt to Happy Chemo. My family has been affected by Cancer, so I related to this charity on a personal level.

I decided to make a quilt from some bee blocks that I had received some time ago. The quilt is a simple design of HST's in pink, grey and black. I think it will be perfect for a little girl who is undergoing chemo.

I am so excited I got to be a part of this, this year and plan to join in next year. You can read more about Hands2Help here. Don't forget to give a shout out to all of the other participants. You can view their quilts over at Confessions of a Fabric addict.

Friends of a Feather....Flock together!

I talked one of my hive mates, Erica, into joining the Supernova Friendship Swap being hosted over at Late Night Quilter.

The low down:

Basically you and your partner make 10 Supernova blocks-(Tutorial can be found over at Freshly Pieced) 2 each month- 1 for yourself and 1 for your partner for 5 months. Along with this there will be some fun questions to answer and send with your block each month, this way you get to know each other a little better.

Erica and I swapped a couple fabric options (she made me choose..no pressure) we ended up with Botanique by Joel Dewberry. I asked her to choose the color way that she liked and she chose the Golden Hour and I am doing the Fountain.

Isn't this just a beautiful line! Love me some Joel Dewberry! I have my first block for Erica completed.

I'll be sending this beauty out this week! So excited to see the rest of these blocks come together!

WIP Wednesday- Garden Peacock

I have been working on my cousin's wedding quilt, he is getting married this July! So excited for him and his fiancé. Their wedding colors are peacock themed, so I thought they needed a peacock themed quilt all their own.

I have four of the twelve blocks completed. I'll keep chugging along and hopefully get this done in time for the big day!

Hello all! I would like to welcome you to Stitching @ the Green Desk!

Some small tidbits about me. I'm the mother to two wonderful little boys (not so little) Riley and William. I have worked at the police department for nine years and still love it. We share our home with our dog Delilah and our ornery cat Duncan. Quilting is my selfish treat. There is nothing like the hum of the sewing machine to help d-stress.

Its been a very tedious process for me to get this started. I had a blog with a few of my first postings and lost it, ugh, then made a new blog, however decided I wanted to change some things on it along with the email it was attached to, found out I could not change the email so I had to start a whole new account. Ugh, Ugh, Ugh. I guess that is what you get when you decide to start blogging and have no idea what you are doing right?

Its been much like my quilting process. You see I'm a newbie. I'm a self taught quilter and I've had some bumps and pin sticks along the way. I've been quilting now for about a year and a half. I learned to sew when I was younger but had no use for it at the time. Then after hearing that my cousin was expecting, I decided to make her a baby quilt. It was far from perfect and I'm pretty sure the quilt police would of winced at my technique, but she liked it and I was hooked. From that point on I have searched, tried, failed, tried again. If at first you don't succeed, try again, right? So that's what I plan to do.

Any who, I plan to post lots of wondrous things for you to ooh and awe over. Oh who am I kidding. Back to reality, this blog will involve all my quilty things. Quilts, projects, swaps and more. I'm a newbie to all this so please bear with me as I stumble along on this journey. I'm always open to suggestions!
