Bent Creek Quaker StarAs summer approaches I like to stitch on at least one patriotic work-in-progress.

YAY! I’m very excited to have a stitching finish this week. (Here’s my previous progress on this project.)

I finished the border on The Raven Sunday night and here it is:

I hope you can see the sparkly effect from the opalescent fabric in the picture, because it’s quite lovely in person. With the movie The Raven coming out in theaters recently and my eagerness to go see that, plus my son reading some Edgar Allan Poe this week for school, I really wanted to make sure this was finished this week.

The Raven by La D Da cross stitchI used the DMC threads instead of the silks that the chart model is stitched with. (The silks to DMC conversion is included with the pattern, and also on the ordering page here.) For fabric I used 28 count opalescent Jazlyn in Chocolate Vanilla Swirl by Silkweaver from my stash cabinet.

mothers-arms-cross-stitch-mirabilia-designsWith Mother’s Day coming up this weekend I’ve got “mother” themed things on the brain.

This is Mother’s Arms from Mirabilia Designs. I will throw a confession in here, I was actually surprised to see that this was a Mirabilia leaflet, it seems different than their usual releases – but, in a good way.

When I think of Mirabilia I usually think of fancy ladies sitting on invisible stools or of colorful mermaids swimming through imaginary waters. I love the colors and the symbols of motherhood throughout this particular piece.

Every mother understands the desire to surround her child with love. Here that love is represented in the most exquisite of details: the infant’s patchwork quilt of hearts, the faithful stuffed bunny, the white doves of peace, and the mother-of-pearl charms that surround the precious pair with health and happiness.

The stitch count on Mother’s Arms is 155w x 189h, so it’s a very nice sized piece. The pictured model was stitched over 2 threads on 32 count Ivory Linen using Mill Hill Beads and Kreinik Metallic Threads.

Stitching the Night Away Stitching Bloggers Blog Hop

Have you ever had a case of the “stitching blahs” where you just didn’t want to stitch? Or maybe it was more like you didn’t get to stitch because you were busy and that created a chain reaction sense of the “blahs” and led to even less stitching…. sort of like a case of “the Mondays” that we are all familiar with. How do you handle your stitching blahs and get back into stitching mode?

I’ve had a long ongoing battle with the stitching blahs over the years, and I know several other stitchers who have as well. That’s part of the reason I chose it as our topic for the first blog hop here at Stitching the Night Away. I was actually going through a bit of stitching blah when I put the hop together, so I figured I would glean a little inspiration from the community on how to banish this most recent bout with the blahs.

I think my longest running episode of non-stitching was somewhere around two and a half years. It was a wicked combination of stress, illness, moving, and more stress that caused it. Definitely not fun. When I finally came out of that funk I started off with a few small projects, freebies from the web and ornament sized things, and eventually worked my way back up to big projects. Thank goodness. At the time, I was afraid I’d never stitch again.

Last year alone I went through several episodes of blah where I would go an entire month without stitching. I started off 2012 pretty good and then recently things really dropped on me recently, I just wasn’t making time to stitch.

I’m glad to report that all ended today and I’m stitching again! I even have photographic proof:

My new E-Z Stitch Lap Stand came from American Dream Products today and I dug in to try it out. If you look closely there I only have a few more stitches to put into The Raven and I’ll be celebrating a finish! In fact, I intend to go curl up on the sofa with it and Friday’s episode of Grimm and get that all the way done right after I publish this blog post…
