Following the complete lockdown, as you may have heard, we have now had to close both churches altogether for the foreseeable future – I am sorry that they will not be available for prayer and meditation.

If you are struggling financially, please also be in touch. We are in close contact with the St Ives Foodbank who will be increasing their services over the coming weeks. We are also happy to discuss financial problems in confidence with the hope of pointing you in the direction of any support which you may need.

The Narrow Road

As you will almost certainly have deduced, the play, the Narrow Road, has been cancelled. I am particularly sorry to those who had already purchased tickets.
Obviously, this cancellation has hit Riding Lights financially in a serious fashion and it would be nice if we could offer them something as a gesture it would be greatly appreciated by them I know. So, if you have bought a ticket and might be willing to donate a percentage of your ticket price, please reply and let me know. Or, if you were planning to go and felt able to make a small donation in lieu of the ticket, again, please let me know.
Aside from anyone wishing to donate part of their ticket price, all ticket sales will be refunded in full.

Riding Lights have also kindly offered us free access to one of their previous plays online (see below). Do have a watch – hopefully it might encourage you to book if we do manage to get them back again!

It is an absorbing and moving piece of theatre, focusing on what was happening to Jesus’s mother and the disciples John and especially to Peter between Good Friday and Easter Sunday morning.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (2nd July Trinity 3)
If Jesus suddenly stood in front of us needing help, we wouldn’t refuse him, would we?When it comes to other people, I suspect it’s not so clear cut. If a homeless person asks us for money, we may suspect he really wants to spend it on drink or drugs (or both), in which case we may feel we should refuse. Although we may not use these terms, it’s very tempting to differentiate between the deserving and the undeserving poor, and favour the former. Our Gospel reading suggests we should adopt a rather different approach. Sometimes when we welcome someone it’s just as if we’re welcoming Jesus himself. If we offer some one as little as a drink of water, it’s noted by our heavenly Father and will be rewarded. All of which suggests we should be more open handed than we often are. Food for thought, I think.

THE WOMEN’S REFUGE/ST.PETROC’S is grateful for your donations of toiletries, dried goods/tins, clothes, bedding (single), towels etc. In particular they need net curtains (90in drop) desperately, furnishings and paint, tin openers, lamps and mirrors for the bedroom. THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (18th June Trinity 2)
In today’s Gospel Jesus tells us that as disciples we are not expected to be him, but rather we are to be “like the teacher.” That likeness insures us that we will be maligned, but being maligned can be endured because Jesus has gone before us as the pioneer of our faith. What he has told us in the dark, in secret, we can proclaim from the housetops. We can do so because he has called us to a ministry that cannot be deferred by death, for the fear of those who can kill the body is now countered by the confidence of the fear of the one who alone determines life and death, namely God.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (18th June Trinity 1)
Today’s gospel reminds us that the apostles were not forced into following Jesus or asked to volunteer but they were called and sent out into the world to continue the work that Jesus himself had been doing. Jesus had compassion on the crowds and responded to their need for guidance and healing. During the distressing events of recent weeks there have been many examples of love and compassion as people have given protection, comfort, support, medical expertise and aid to those devastated by loss, injury and trauma. In these actions, we see the love of Christ reflected in our communities.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (11th June Trinity Sunday)
Today we celebrate the festival of the Trinity. The doctrine of the Trinity is both foundational for orthodox Christianity, and, at the same time, that part of the Christian faith that we find it hardest to get our heads round. Perhaps the easiest way to make sense of it is to think how the first Christians came to such an understanding about God. They were Jews first, so had a clear understanding of God the Father, as we now call him. Then they met Jesus, and came to realise that that he, too, was part of what we mean when we speak of God. And finally, on the Day of Pentecost, they encountered the Holy Spirit, who then also became part of their understanding of God. Hence the Trinity.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (4th June Pentecost)
Pentecost is the Birthday of the Church. The descent of the Holy Spirit, so powerfully and boldly described by St Luke in his Acts of the Apostles, is indeed an occasion of great power. It enabled the early Church to proclaim the Gospel to the ends of the Earth. But that was two thousand years ago, what of that power today? We receive the Holy Spirit at our Baptism and confirmation, but we more often than not forget about it. But that isn’t how it should be. Every Eucharist should be a sending forth into the community with Spirit filled Christians.

The Churches that are growing today, are those where the Holy Spirit is released in Christian lives and affecting the community around them. The real work of the Holy Spirit is not merely to comfort and strengthen our faith, but also to enable us to communicate our Lord’s love to others. Church leaders often speak of growing the Faith, but only the Holy Spirit within each believer can do that. Each of us needs a Personal Pentecost. Pray for a personal Pentecost.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (28th May Easter 7)
On Thursday, we celebrated the Feast of the Ascension when Jesus was taken up into heaven having reminded the disciples that they were witnesses to the crucifixion and resurrection and were to proclaim the good news to all nations. In the Gospel reading this morning Jesus prays for the disciples and for us that as we go about this task we may have God’s protection and be unified. The prayer movement ‘Thy Kingdom come’ invites Christians to join a wave of prayer during the days between Ascension and Pentecost. We are encouraged to ask for the Holy Spirit to help us be witnesses to Jesus Christ and to pray for others to discover that living faith. Will you ‘Pledge2Pray’?

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (21st May Easter 6)
What did Jesus’ disciples feel like after his ascension? You might think they were feeling depressed and bereft. At the end of his Gospel Luke tells us something different. “They returned to Jerusalem with great joy and they were continually in the temple blessing God” (Luke 24:52). The reason for this can be found in today’s gospel reading, where Jesus tells his disciples, “I will ask the Father and he will send you another advocate to be with you for ever.....I will not leave you orphaned’’ (John 14:16,18). That promise is for us too. Jesus does not leave us alone and unaided. When we’re about the work of the kingdom we have the promised Holy Spirit to guide and empower us.

The great tragedy facing many people of our world is that it might be better to die in a refugee camp than to die in a war. It could be more acceptable to risk your children’s lives in a plastic dinghy, and to leave everything you know behind. What a terrible choice to have to make. When the alternative is civil war, terror, bombs and bullets, almost anything is better. This is the dreadful choice facing tens of millions of people worldwide - fl eeing confl ict and disaster, making dangerous journeys in search of safety. Christian Aid Week was set up 60 years ago to support the work with refugees in Europe following the Second World War. In many ways it is much worse now than when Christian Aid was fi rst set up. Let’s act again now, to help relieve suffering and build a world where everyone has a safe place to call home.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (7th May Easter 4)
A shepherd’s life was harsh and dangerous as he defended his sheep from thieves, bad weather or wild animals often sleeping with the sheep and acting as a gate to the sheep pen. Psalm 23 ‘The Lord is my shepherd’ emphasises the care and protection of God for his people but the blessings come from keeping close to ‘the shepherd’ and not going astray. Jesus described himself as ‘the good shepherd’ who had come for all those who will listen to his voice and follow him. How well do we know the voice of the Shepherd and are we following it?

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (30th April Easter 3)

Our Gospel reading today begins with two disciples setting out for a seven-mile walk from Jerusalem to Emmaus. It ends with them taking a seven-mile walk back again. What a strange thing to do! So why did they bother? Because leaving Jerusalem was about saying goodbye to all their hopes about Jesus. Then they met that same Jesus, discovering that he wasn’t dead after all. So they returned to the place where they could share that revived hope with the eleven disciples, knowing that their hope in Jesus as the one “who would redeem Israel” was very much intact.

There is a remarkable line in one of Victor Hugo’s poems. “Each man in his darkness goes towards the light”. The life of each of us has a meaning, which escapes us. Each of us, despite diffi culties, vacillations, and failures moves from a confused darkness towards the peace of the Kingdom of God. The day shall fi nally come when, as it is written in the Scriptures, God shall wipe away all tears. Our life appears to be like a novel, but God fi nds the title. We are told in today’s Gospel that Thomas doubted the Lord’s Resurrection. We all experience such times – But, hold on. It’s all part of the meaning that escapes us. Times of doubt can also be times of growth in the Kingdom.

Alleluia, Alleluia Christ is risen! With this joyous acclamation, the darkness of Good Friday is put behind us and we move into the light of life with the risen Christ. The resurrection of Jesus was met with fear, joy, amazement and hope by his followers who had been plunged into despair and confusion by his crucifixion. On Easter Day everything changed because the unimaginable and inexplicable had happened. It was a new beginning for Jesus’ followers and it is a new beginning for us too as we are invited to share in the new life that the resurrection brings and we can proclaim – He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (9th April Palm Sunday)

There is something about being in a big crowd. It is very easy to get caught up in the prevailing mood. On Palm Sunday, as we now call it, in Jerusalem, the crowd seems to be acclaiming Jesus. Except that the crowd’s answer to “Who is this?” is “This is the prophet Jesus from Galilee.” Jesus is a prophet, but so much more. Here they are blessing the name of Jesus; on Good Friday the crowd will be calling for his crucifixion. It’s easy to bless the name of Jesus when everyone is doing it. We need to stand firm in the faith when others pressure us to do the exact opposite.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (2nd April)

Today is Passion Sunday. It refers to the beginning of our Lord’s trials. All four Gospels record in great details his arrest to his Crucifi xion. The word Passion, (from the Greek verb “pascho” meaning to suffer) portrays a very strong and intense feeling. Passion is not only as emotion, but a compelling enthusiasm or desire for something of vital signifi cance. In the Gospels it’s a God word. Note the word desire - And He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer”. In this brief passage from Luke’s Gospel (22:15) desire and passion are united. As we move towards Holy week, the scene is set for our Lord’s entire act of love on Passion Sunday. God lays before us the Passion of his Son in all four Gospels which reaches its climax on Good Friday.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (19th March)

The origins of Mothering Sunday are unclear but most historians think that it was the practice of returning to the ‘Mother’ church, which led to the tradition of domestic servants or apprentices being given the day off to visit their mother and family. As a church community, we are called into a role of mothering, to ensure that everyone receives the nurturing, protection, love, sacrifice and guidance that each individual needs to flourish. Families come in all shapes and sizes and for some Mothering Sunday can be an uncomfortable and even negative occasion. Yet each one of us has received ‘mothering’ at some point in our lives and we can be thankful for that person, male or female, younger or older than us, family, friend or stranger.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (19th March)

A tribe of nomads travelled through the desert and cried out to God because they were thirsty, and God provided water for them. A man sat down beside a well, tired out by his journey and asked a woman to give him water to drink and she did. The significance of water in the Bible is not only physical but also spiritual. Jesus spoke of the living water that leads to eternal life. Today, in physical terms, 5.5 million children in East Africa are threatened by drought, famine and conflict. There is also a spiritual thirst in society that challenges Christians. In both cases the question for us is the same. Who will provide and how?

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (12th March)

Thomas à Kempis wrote in ‘The Imitation of Christ: ‘It is faith that is expected from you and honest living, not profound understanding and deep knowledge of the mysteries of God’. In other words, God is asking ‘Do you love me and trust me?’. Abraham trusted God and left the home of his ancestors and his wider family to follow a nomadic life in the desert knowing that as Psalm 121 says: ‘The Lord himself watches over you’. Nicodemus believed that Jesus came from God but struggled to understand some of his teachings. Lack of understanding and doubt could be seen as a barrier in our relationship with God but perhaps Lent is an opportunity to explore these difficulties, safe in the knowledge that they are not a barrier to God loving us.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (5th March)

We are reminded in today’s Gospel reading that Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, fasted and resisted the temptations of the devil. Traditionally in the season of Lent people have observed a time of fasting and abstinence. Today there has also been a trend to give up social media or have a ‘fast’ from electronic gadgets. Conversely, many do acts of kindness during Lent to raise awareness of the needs of others or of concern for the environment. The intention behind all of this is to focus our minds on Jesus and to call us to repentance for our sins leading to our transformation. Whatever approach you choose to take this year may it give you the opportunity through reflection, prayer and self-denial to grow in Christ and to become more like Christ.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (26th February)

Have you ever sat in a high place and admired the beauty of God’s creation, perhaps even somewhere along our stunning coastline? The sense of God’s glory and majesty is hard to escape. Moses in our first reading and Peter, James and John with Jesus in the Gospel reading go up a mountain and experience the wonder of God’s presence with them. This overwhelming encounter confirmed for the disciples the identity of Jesus but also caused them to be afraid for he was transfigured before them. May we too feel the awesome nature of God at work in our lives and yet hear the voice of Jesus saying ‘Get up and do not be afraid’ so that we can go out and share the good news with others.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (19th February)

Jesus said ‘Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own’. We may see ourselves surrounded by worries, but Jesus gives us some sound advice in this morning’s Gospel. After all, how much of what we worry about is an issue for us today, right now? Much of our anxiety stems from what has happened in the past or what we are afraid will happen in the future. We have the assurance that God, who created the world, cares about each one of us and our lives so that we can share our worries with him in prayer. Living in the present moment frees us from yesterday’s and tomorrow’s fears and allows us to deal with today’s problems.

How would it be if our thoughts were revealed on a video screen for all to see? Would we still be able to look our friends and neighbours in the eye or would we be embarrassed that our outward behaviour doesn’t always match what is going on inside our heads? In Matthew’s gospel today Jesus continues his exploration of the Law and focuses on those commandments that are intended to help us maintain good relationships. Sometimes we need to take an honest look at ourselves and ask if we are living as one person on the outside but entirely another on the inside.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (5th February)

When Jesus healed on the Sabbath and sat down to eat with the outcasts of society he scandalised the religious people of his day by going against their expectations of right living in accordance with the Law. Instead he encouraged his disciples to go beyond a narrow interpretation of the Law and return to the original foundation of the commandments ‘to love the Lord your God and your neighbour as yourself’. In doing so he was urging them to be salt and light in their community, to act differently to those around them in a way that would give glory to God. What does that mean for us today?

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (22nd January)

In today’s scripture readings we are reminded of God’s provision against all expectations. The widow in Zarephath is saved by the miraculous provision of grain and oil for her household during a time of famine. Jesus transformed water into wine at the wedding feast when there was insuffi cient for the celebration. God meets both needs generously. Maybe in the week ahead we will be asked to help someone with our time, talents, possessions or money. Not all needs are material, sometimes a kind word or a thoughtful act is what is required to be a blessing and a support to a friend or stranger. May we respond generously when the opportunity arises.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK (22nd January) from Canon Andrew.

Many people will know the hymn which starts with the line ‘Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?’ by John Bell and Graham Maule of the Iona Community. It echoes the reading in our Gospel for today where the immediate response of the fishermen to Jesus’ call was to leave a steady job for an uncertain life and become disciples. It is unlikely that we will be called to take such a radical step and yet we are still challenged to follow Jesus and to be changed. Do our lives show this in the choices we make, our relationships and our concern for the world?
