STL Hops 2nd Anniversary Party

I know people have been asking about it, but it’s time to let the cat out of the bag. On November 20th at 6:00PM, STL Hops will be having its Second Anniversary Party in the Schlafly Tap Room Cellar. I don’t think there is a better place to have a beer nerd party than surrounded by brewing equipment.

Tickets can be purchased through Brown Paper Tickets and the cost is $20.01. Why the extra penny? Because with the BPT service fee, the exact cost of the ticket is $21.50. All of the proceeds for this event will be donated to Stray Rescue of St. Louis. Your ticket will include beer and snacks. Right now I have confirmations from the following brewers/distributors on beer:

Boulevard
Buffalo Brewing
New Belgium
Morgan Street

Keep checking back on this post because I’m working on not only getting a bunch of brewers but also a bunch of swag as well. Also, only 65 tickets are being made available, so get them while you can.

Blood & Sand Event at 33 Wine Shop Tonight

33 Wine Shop & Tasting Bar will be hosting a special event tonight, Monday, November 9th, called Blood & Sand. This event is to help kick off the new St. Louis chapter of the United States Bartenders Guild.

Blood & Sand will not only allow you to try some samples of beer and wine, but local mixologists Ted Kilgore and T.J. Vytlacil will be on hand to put together some of their amazing cocktail creations.

I will be on hand to assist with the beer tastings. So come on out and show your support for the local Bartenders Guild and enjoy some tasty beverages to boot. The event will begin at 6PM and admission is free.

Week of 11/06/09 Beer Tastings

I’ve made a change in how the beer tastings will be listed in the Friday Round-Up, it’s going to be a week’s worth of tastings starting with the Friday that the list is posted. So if you’re a retail shop, bar, restaurant, brewery or distributor and want me to list your tasting, make sure to email me at mike@stlhops.com.

Today, from 4PM to 6:30PM the Wine and Cheese Place in Clayton will be having a tasting featuring Bells Expedition Stout 2009, Bells Christmas Ale, Bells Winter White, De Graal Tripel, Birolla Malthus Chestnut Ale, Farnum Hill Extra Dry Cider, and Schlafly Coffee Stout. 2009 National Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day

Ah, it’s that time of the year again. Time to break out your mash paddle, fire up the burners and teach someone how to homebrew! According to the American Homebrewers Association, “Teach a Friend to Homebrew Day is an international event to introduce people to the homebrewing hobby and establish relationships with local homebrew supply shops.”

Each year on the first Saturday in November homebrewers get together and gather up some friends and teach them how to brew beer. It could be possible that your friends may not ever brew a beer again, but I think it’s very important that if you love beer, you understand how beer is made.

But what if you don’t know a friend that homebrews? Well, you always have a friend in Drew Huerter, Jerid Saffell and Mattingly Brewing, as they’re hosting a homebrewing demonstration on November 7th starting at 8AM:

Anyone who would like to come down and brew or learn how to brew, Mattingly will be hosting again this year. This upcoming Saturday 11/7. I will be doing an all grain demo. If you plan to brew, please try to be there and set up between 8-10 am. I will have plenty of hot filtered water and cold chilling water around. Depending on our brew cycle I may have some yeast available as well. I can also mill your grain if you need such service.

11/04/09 Mattingly Peek-a-Brew Line Up

The Mattingly Brewing Company may now be producing full scale productions of beer, but that doesn’t stop them from showing off what’s yet to come. Tonight, Head Brewer Drew Huerter let his assistant brewer Jerid Saffell take the reins and brew up the Hop Goddess Double IPA. Drew gives a description of the beer:

The Hop Goddess hits full force in flavor with 5 American hop varities mated to a dry, slightly caramel malt profile very reminiscent of what you will find on the west coast. Loads of hop aroma, a respectible ABV at 8.25%, and our slightly fruity house yeast round out this bold IIPA. 100+ IBUs

Be sure to head out tonight and taste some of Drew and Jerid’s excellent beer.

11/04/2009 Cicero’s Beer School

Cicero’s Italian Restaurant continues their fall Beer School semester this Wednesday from 5:30-6:30PM. Cicero’s Beer School provides background about beers and beer styles usually directly from people directly in the beer industry.

It’s a perfect opportunity to learn more about a style you’re unfamiliar with or to just brush up on a style you haven’t enjoyed in a while.

This week’s school is being taught by a representative from Pyramid/Magic Hat. This person will be on hand to discuss and sample the Pyramid Wheat, Apricot and an IPA. Go out and take advantage of one of the few places where you can drink and learn!
