Fashion trends run the gamut, and some can be over before you've even gotten the memo they've begun. When I was a kid the brand of jeans you wore was a very big deal and I'm sure that's still a factor for teens. But save for the Walkman and the color of our roller skate covers I don't think anyone of a certain age could have predicted that so many “out there” things could be included as part of our own personal vision of style.

Your Pet

The pet industry is one of the few markets out there that is thriving during the economic woes. Why is that? Well while some pet lovers look to cut costs with Fifi or Fido, many more are looking at their pets as beloved members of the family. I have personally seen the care some friends take in feeding their pups and goodness knows I had a gold-plated Himalayan, but now thanks to pet apparel, strollers and the like your pet can be a direct reflection of your own personal style. Sure you'll still see the occasional old-school Frisbee catching Retriever with a bandanna but you're also just as likely to see a Pug in a biker jacket or a Poodle in a tutu. Let's face it, love it or loathe the trend but pets are getting decked out.

Tech Stuff

Boy howdy, this one is particularly surprising to readers of a certain age but your phone, music player, laptop, etc has become a huge reflection of style. From specialized “skins” to customized ring tones and apps, what you cart around (and with what level of panache) can say a fair bit about you. And though purse and apparel sales are most likely still going strong a lot of people get more joy from picking a new cover for their smart phone than they do another bland pair of jeans. Technology is big business but technology accessories is even bigger.

Your Kid

There comes a time when a child is adamant about expressing his or her own style. The tough part is when that usually means marrying various animal prints and unholy color combinations but a parent can always hope that their own style (if any) somehow shows through with their kids. Though when parents actually do let their kids wander the town in six shades of pink and green they might be embarrassed but they also come off as pretty darned cool. I had pink hair as a teen, and when other adults commented to my mom about it my mom said, “If that's the worst thing she's doing, we're doing alright.” Of course it wasn't the worst thing I was doing but that freedom to be wild looking ultimately cemented my friendship with my mom and let me feel I had some sort of control over a life that of course I didn't have any control over. And yes, I calmed down eventually.

So while your kids may not go for the cargo pants and collared shirts you hope for they are still reflecting you. They show whether you save the bullets for the big bears or work incessantly to make your kids conform. Now when a company gets it together to get coordinating outfits for your kids, pets AND gadgets you'll soon be looking at a Fortune 500 biz!

A Heartwarming Service Dog Success Story

Planning an Outdoor Wedding

If you’re planning to get married this summer, you might be thinking about an outdoor wedding. Although they come with their own share of pitfalls – after all, you never quite know what the weather’s going to do, do you? – outdoor weddings can be incredibly beautiful and romantic, and limited only by imagination (and possibly budget – although you can make some major savings this way!)

So how do you make sure that your outdoor wedding is everything you want it to be and more? Not just for you, but your guests too?

Venue

In England and Wales, you cannot be legally married outside. The ceremony can take place outdoors, but the legalities (the statements, signing of the register etc.) must be carried out in either a church, registry office or other licensed wedding venue.

However, you can still have an outdoor wedding, not to mention the reception. A temporary or permanent canopy or gazebo can be a lovely location for a romantic and intimate ceremony, while a tent or marquee is ideal for a reception. There are plenty of venues (country house hotels, parks, gardens, etc.) that offer outdoor wedding packages now, so do a little bit of homework.

Theme

A temporary canopy, gazebo or marquee can easily be decorated to match your chosen theme. If you’re getting married outdoors, you can use the natural beauty of the venue to inspire you. Perhaps echo the colours of the flowers if there’s a garden. Or consider seasonal colours and flowers. Oranges, reds and purples are lovely for autumn weddings, while pretty pastel colours and greenery are wonderful for spring, and red and white make a pretty Christmassy theme.

Guests

Make sure there’s plenty of seating for guests and if it’s a hot, sunny day, have cool drinks on hand and somewhere shady they can go and sit/stand. If it’s cooler, let them know they may need extra layers, and you could even have coffees or hot chocolate available for them while they mingle.

Weather

This will be your main issue for an outdoor wedding, and unfortunately there’s not much you can do about it! If you’re in a marquee, make sure it has proper flooring so that guests don’t get soggy feet or sink in the grass.

And, if push comes to shove, try and have a backup (indoor) venue. Tables and chairs can be moved, but your guests won’t thank you if they get drenched/blown away.

An outdoor wedding will require careful consideration and planning, and there may be several things that you wouldn’t have to factor in for a traditional ceremony, but hold your wedding outdoors, and it’ll definitely be one to remember.

When planning a family vacation, it can be difficult to find a destination and organize family activities that everyone will enjoy. Luckily my family enjoys the great outdoors so we can easily plan trips that keep the entire family happy.

My kids developed a love for nature while staying at an outdoor boarding school in New Hampshire one summer. Here they discovered a love for hiking, white water rafting and rock climbing. Since then we have organized vacations that center on adventure sports and hiking and these trips have been fantastic for family bonding and building memories that will last a lifetime.

And thanks to my wife’s enrollment in an online university we have a new found flexibility and so can travel whenever our kids are on vacation time. We have had some phenomenal trips experiencing some of the best in nature that the US has to offer.

Here are our top 5 favorite US outdoors and family friendly destinations:

The Grand Canyon

One of the world’s most famous natural wonders, the Grand Canyon is located in the heart of the Arizonan desert. A beautiful and awe-inspiring canyon carved by the Colorado River, this far-reaching site is on many people’s bucket lists. If you do go here, make sure you plan to spend the whole day as the Canyon is absolutely huge and you will want to spend a decent time to truly grasp its sheer size and wonder. We were completely blown away by the Grand Canyon and highly recommend it.

Yosemite

This Northern California destination is one of the most stunning and widely visited National Parks in all of California. Famed for its granite cliffs, tall waterfalls and snowy winters, Yosemite is a very family friendly vacation choice. We love skiing and snowboarding in Yosemite in the winter and during the summer it is great for hiking trips. There are plenty of camping sites and picnic tables throughout the park, so save money and bring your camping gear and own food and skip on the local often pricy accommodations and restaurants.

Honolulu

Everyone should explore a Hawaiian island at least once in their lifetime, and Honolulu is a great one to start off with. A beautiful island known for its warm hospitality, there is plenty here to keep every member of the family entertained. My wife and I enjoyed the jet skis while my kids had a great time snorkeling and horseback riding along the sandy beaches. Avoid peak summer times as the beach can get jam packed. We vacationed here in the winter and relished in the virtually deserted beaches and slashed accommodation prices.

Yellowstone

Another epic National Park, Yellowstone is the first National Park in all of America. Primarily located in Wyoming, this gigantic park also borders Idaho and Montana. As well as its natural beauty, Yellowstone also boasts much indigenous wildlife such as wolves, bison, elks, lynx, bears, deer and mountain lions. We love hiking through the park and marveling at its natural geysers. Just make sure you bring your camera, as you will want to take snapshots that will capture family memories you will cherish forever.

Fort Lauderdale, Florida

If you are a family of beach bums, you can’t go wrong with Fort Lauderdale. One of Florida’s sandiest and most popular beaches, Fort Lauderdale is great for water sports or just for sunbathing. We tried scuba diving here and had an amazing time seeing all the fishes and even swam with some dolphins! As with Honolulu, this beach destination can get unbearably busy in the summer months, so you will probably want to schedule your vacation during off season periods of the year.

These are 5 of my family’s personal favorite picks for US outdoors adventure vacations but of course there are many more epic places that aren’t on the list. Make sure you explore your options online before you pick a place to visit and stay. The best deals and advice can often be found online so don’t forget to do some online research before you book. Wine tastings usually have a cover charge and guests are encouraged to try different styles to find their favorites. Wine tastings have a great atmosphere and can be a great place to go for a date.

Live Music

Not only are wine bars great because people can gather and enjoy wine, but many places have live music. What could be better than ending your work weak with some blues or maybe even a little jazz? Live music is great because customers get to experience some of the local talent. Also, if you happen to be a local musician then you can enquire about performing there also.

Take Time for Yourself

When the work weak winds down do not stay at home. Instead, see what your area has to offer for entertainment. Plus this is a great way for anyone to make new friends.

Hurricanes, tropical storms, and other types of severe weather conditions can wreck havoc on a home or business, let alone an entire community. Since natural disasters are completely unavoidable, you can only prepare your home or business to a certain extent because no amount of preparation can stop a home or business from being damaged by wind or water. There are some things that you can do to help protect your assets and control the extent of the damage by securing the perimeter, preparing yourself, getting insurance, and meeting with your neighbors and business owners.

1. Prepare yourself

The first thing you must do is prepare yourself for the storm. Time is of the essence, especially if the storm will hit within a few days. Listen to the weather forecasts very carefully and take their warnings seriously because many have died thinking that nothing would happen. Create an emergency kit and get essential items like flashlights, batteries, cellphones, radios, blankets, maps, and a generator. Gather your important documents from around the house such as passports, licenses, as well as other legal and financial documents. Winter is slowly beginning to wreak havoc on our lives so now is the time to prepare your beloved vehicle for the cold snap. So no matter if you are driving a mini or a pickup truck below are a few tips to make sure that both you and the machine are adequately equipped to deal with any winter emergency.

Road Salt
With winter comes ice and with ice comes the onslaught of grit spreaders, helping to clear away hazardous ice. While this may seem a step in the right direction of batting away the dangers of winter, the road salt itself is an issue to contend with. The salt helps to reduce the freezing point of moisture on road surfaces and therefore stop it from forming into lethal ice. Salt also has the unwelcome attribute of speeding up the corrosion process of metal. Ensure you use a high quality sealant or wax on your cars bodywork from the autumn onwards to prevent salt causing erosion on your vehicle.

Although they'll never admit it, most people have the ability to sing. There's more involved in singing than hitting the right notes, though. To sing like a professional, you need to develop the muscles in your chest, abdomen and back. Muscular development is important because proper body position is required for successful singing.

Professional singers exercise regularly to improve their lung capacity, position, balance and vocal tone. These exercises don't resemble the routines we normally think of as exercise, but they're designed to develop and strengthen the muscles required for performance.

If you're interested in pursuing a career in song, here are a few exercises you can do to strengthen your "singing muscles."

A strong diaphragm is an absolute necessity for a singer. The diaphragm is a muscle that sits below your lungs and separates your chest from your abdomen. When you inhale your diaphragm contracts. This contraction increases the space of the thoracic cavity and draws air into the body. When you exhale, the diaphragm expands and forces air out. These two actions are absolutely necessary for clear, confident singing, so increasing the strength and control of the diaphragm can improve your stage performance.

Breathe With Your Belly

Inhale rapidly and deeply. The contraction you feel below your lungs is your diaphragm. Although your diaphragm works each time you inhale or exhale, quick deep inhalation breaths will help stretch and strengthen this muscle, and it will help you identify its position. When you are singing, you should be able to feel your diaphragm contracting and relaxing. If you cannot feel your diaphragm, you're not inhaling quickly enough or deeply enough to provide sustained sound.

When you breathe, your chest normally expands and contracts. With this exercise, also designed to strengthen your diaphragm, you want to exhale without decreasing the size of your chest. If you can do this, you can master the controlled exhalation you need to sing.

Exhaling Through Your Diaphragm

Take in a rapid, deep breath. Note the expanded size of your chest. "Lock" your chest muscles and exhale the air using your diaphragm. Exhale as completely as possible without changing your chest size. The exhalation (which may feel a bit funny) was accomplished by your diaphragm. Repeat this exercise to help establish the smooth exhalation control you'll need to perform.

Posture is another key element to breathing. When you stand straight and tall, your diaphragm can expand and contract more effectively. If you sit, slump or hunch your shoulders forward, the rest of your body limits the space in which your diaphragm can expand.

Balancing A Book

Find a hardcover book, about the size of a textbook. Stand as straight as you can and try to balance the book on your head. To prevent the book from falling, you'll need to keep your head, neck and back straight. Try to balance the book for 30 seconds, then 1 minute, then 2 minutes, then three minutes without relaxing your neck or spine. Once you've got the knack of balancing the book, add belly breathing and exhaling through the diaphragm to the mix. After you master the balancing and breathing, try raising your arms over your head while you breathe and balance the book. This will help expand your chest cavity and enable you to take in more air.

Repeat these exercises regularly and you'll develop the correct posture and diaphragmatic strength you'll need to launch your singing career.
