Australian men typically consume almost four times the recommended alcohol intake in a drinking session, but most don't believe they binge drink, new research shows.

A national survey into drinking attitudes found 79 per cent of Australians do not believe they drink too much - but reckon others do.

The survey, produced for the Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation (AER), showed men consumed almost four times the recommended alcohol guidelines in a typical drinking session, and women twice as much.

The guidelines recommend no more than two standard drinks a day.

Some 60 per cent of the 1,000 respondents agreed Australians drink too much, and another 36 per cent say their friends or family consume too much alcohol.

The survey found 21 per cent of respondents said they had passed out at least once as a consequence of drinking, with 75 per cent saying there was peer pressure to drink alcohol.

The survey results come just days after Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced a $53 million program as an initial attempt to put a cap on binge drinking among young Australians.

AER chief executive Daryl Smeaton said the survey results raised concerns about conflicting attitudes towards excessive drinking.

"Whilst many Australians recognise we have a national drinking problem, when it comes to our personal everyday drinking habits, it seems most people are more comfortable turning a blind eye, or pointing the finger at other people," Mr Smeaton said.

"Most Australians will not acknowledge that they drink at risky levels.

"(But) there is a clear belief that friends, and Australians in general, are drinking too much.

"Australians need to shift the 'it's not me, it's them' attitude concerning drinking habits before we can start to change the way we drink."

Mr Smeaton said alcohol misuse cost the Australian economy a conservative $15.3 billion a year.

"The government has made a powerful commitment to undertaking preventative work to help reduce this toll and AER welcomes this commitment," he said.

AUSTRALIAN stocks closed 2.3 per cent lower today after robust domestic jobs data fuelled inflation concerns and as Tokyo slumped.

Investors also worried that key US economic data due tonight on retail sales might be weak as investors scale back spending amid fears of recession, while lingering fears of more credit woes in US financial institutions also weighed on market sentiment.

The benchmark S&P/ASX 200 Index slipped 122 points, or 2.3 per cent, to 5135.9, and the broader All Ordinaries dropped 118.4 points, or 2.22 per cent, to 5215.7.

In Tokyo, the benchmark Nikkei 225 index was 3.45 per cent lower by late afternoon.

“While it’s possible we may have seen the lows in share markets, it’s likely that more downside lies ahead in the next few months as the news on the US economy is likely to get worse before it gets better,” AMP Capital Investors chief economist Shane Oliver said.

“However, while the outlook for the next six months or so remains bleak we remain of the view that the bulk of the damage has been done and that by later this year shares should be back onto a sustainable rising trend.”

Australian employers created a better-than-expected 36,700 jobs last month and the unemployment rate surprisingly fell to 4 per cent, its lowest since the 1974 August quarter, a Bureau of Statistics report said today.

The report fuelled concerns about the risk that wage demands would fuel upward inflationary pressures and bolstered speculation the Reserve Bank of Australia would retain a hawkish outlook on monetary policy for the rest of this year.

Analysts stressed the employment report was a lagging economic indicator.

“Nevertheless, the strength of the February numbers will keep the Reserve Bank watching for signs of upward pressure on wages and implies that even if it has finished hiking the cash rate, it is unlikely to be quick to start reducing the cash rate,” said Lehman Brothers Australia chief economist Stephen Roberts.

AMP’s Mr Oliver added: “The fall in unemployment to a new 33-year low is telling us that the economy has been strong over the last year. But the collapse in consumer confidence to its lowest level since 1993 is one of several indicators telling us that the economy is likely to slow significantly and further interest rate hikes are unnecessary.”

The high-yielding Australian dollar shot up as high as US94.17 cents after the February labour force report, up from yesterday’s domestic close of US93.23c, as investors placed bets that official interest rates could rise again this year.

But the Aussie dollar had pulled back by late afternoon to be at US93.40c.

The Reserve Bank raised rates to a 12-year high of 7.25 per cent earlier this month, after increasing rates by 25 basis points last month to fight inflation.

THE Australian share market retreated today as US woes over the global credit crunch resurfaced and local jobs figures fuelled fears of another rate rise.

At 1615 AEDT, the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index had fallen 122 points, or 2.32 per cent, to 5135.9, while the broader All Ordinaries slipped 118.4 points, or 2.22 per cent, to 5215.7.

On the Sydney Futures Exchange, the March share price index contract declined 92 points to 5135 on a volume of 31,779 contracts.

CMC Markets senior dealer James Foulsham said there were renewed concerns today the US Federal Reserve's plan to increase liquidity would not be enough to ease the global credit crunch.

As well, yesterday's short-lived rally – when local stocks surged 2.4 per cent – was partly driven by short sellers covering their positions, he said.

"People are still pretty uncertain," Mr Foulsham said.

"There's some doubts coming out of the US whether the $200 billion that's going to be injected is going to be enough money to sort out the problems.

"What we're seeing today is a lot of the stocks that bounced yesterday have just come straight back down.

SANDPOINT -- The Bonner County Planning & Zoning Commission unanimously approved a large-scale planned unit development for resort on Lake Pend Oreille at Trestle Creek.
An accompanying zone change from rural to recreation for the 109-unit development was approved on a 4-1 vote. The development's conditional use permit and zone change are headed to county commissioners with do-pass recommendations.

The planning commission tabled decisions on Pend Oreille Bonner Development's proposal earlier this month due to time constraints. Tuesday's hearing was open to testimony, although it was limited to allow testimony only from people who didn't speak at the prior hearing.

Nearly all of the testimony at the earlier hearing was in support of the project. At Tuesday's hearing, three people testified and each raised concerns about the proposal.

Mount Eagen resident Janelle Shields said she was discomforted by the density of the housing and its impact on the shoreline. Although developers say the resort would have lesser impacts than the RV park its supplanting, Shields pointed out the trailer park was seasonal."The trailer park had its highest use three months out of the year," she said. "There will be an impact year-round with this density."

Lori Goldrick echoed Shields' remarks and questioned the safety of the resort's dependence on track-level railroad crossings motorists would have to negotiate and the "privatization of the lake shore."The North Idaho Country Resort RV park has always been private property, although anybody could pull off the Highway 200 and pay a fee to camp or stay there.On rebuttal, project representative Marty Taylor emphasized the resort would be developed at a density lower than code allows and it would have no effect on the adjacent recreation area maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Builders and developers tend to notice big price imbalances, and they are
working to accommodate demand for urban living. New lofts and condo complexes
have popped up all over many big cities. Suburban towns built in the 19th and
early 20th centuries, featuring downtown street grids at their core, have seen
a good deal of “in-filling” in recent years as well, with new condos and town
houses, and renovated small-lot homes just outside their downtowns. And while
urban construction may slow for a time because of the present housing bust, it
will surely continue. Sprawling, large-lot suburbs become less attractive as
they become more densely built, but urban areas—especially those well served by
public transit—become more appealing as they are filled in and built up.
Crowded sidewalks tend to be safe and lively, and bigger crowds can support
more shops, restaurants, art galleries.
But developers are also starting to find ways to bring the city to newer
suburbs—and provide an alternative to conventional, car-based suburban life.
“Lifestyle centers”—walkable developments that create an urban feel, even when
built in previously undeveloped places—are becoming popular with some builders.
They feature narrow streets and small storefronts that come up to the sidewalk,
mixed in with housing and office space. Parking is mostly hidden underground or
in the interior of faux city blocks.
But much of the future decline is likely to occur on the fringes, in towns far
away from the central city, not served by rail transit, and lacking any real
core. In other words, some of the worst problems are likely to be seen in some
of the country’s more recently developed areas—and not only those inhabited by
subprime-mortgage borrowers. Many of these areas will become magnets for
poverty, crime, and social dysfunction.
Despite this glum forecast for many swaths of suburbia, we should not lose
sight of the bigger picture—the shift that’s under way toward walkable urban
living is a healthy development. In the most literal sense, it may lead to
better personal health and a slimmer population. The environment, of course,
will also benefit: if New York City were its own state, it would be the most
energy-efficient state in the union; most Manhattanites not only walk or take
public transit to get around, they unintentionally share heat with their
upstairs neighbors.

The disappointing earnings forecasts and comments from Fed officials come as Wall Street tries to determine whether the economy is in recession -- and whether investors have been a bit too optimistic about companies' profits bouncing back in the second half of the year.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 103.96, or 0.85 percent, to 12,154.94.

Broader stock indicators also dropped. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 9.96, or 0.75 percent, to 1,321.38, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 18.68, or 0.83 percent, to 2,239.92, reflecting concerns about the high-tech sector following Intel's news.

Citigroup, one of the 30 companies in the Dow, fell $1.15, or 4.9 percent, to $21.94 to new nine-year lows.

Intel, another Dow component, slipped 11 cents to $19.90.

Declining issues outnumbered advancers by about 2 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, where volume came to 267.2 million shares.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 6.82, or 1.00 percent, to 677.38.

Overseas, Japan's Nikkei stock average edged up less than 0.01 percent. In afternoon trading, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 1.22 percent, Germany's DAX index fell 1.26 percent, and France's CAC-40 declined 1.14 percent.

Earth Biofuels LNG Subsidiary Signs Supply Agreement With SYSCO

DALLAS — Earth Biofuels, Inc. (OTCBB: EBOF) today announced that its subsidiary, Applied LNG Technologies, Inc. ("ALT"), has executed a new three year supply agreement to sell and deliver liquefied natural gas ("LNG") to SYSCO Food Services of Los Angeles, Inc., a subsidiary of SYSCO Corporation (NYSE: SYY).

As is the case with its numerous other West Coast customers, ALT will deliver the LNG from its plant in Topock, Arizona to SYSCO of Los Angeles for use in SYSCO's fleet of delivery trucks.

Robert Kidder, Manager of Fleet and Facilities for SYSCO Foods of LA, stated, "Signing this long term contract with ALT provides us a secure source of LNG at costs significantly lower than diesel prices."

DALLAS--(Business Wire)--Earth Biofuels, Inc. (OTCBB: EBOF) today announced that its
subsidiary, Applied LNG Technologies, Inc. ("ALT"), has begun
receiving regular deliveries of the output of renewable liquefied
natural gas ("LNG") produced from a landfill site in Orange County,
California.

  Per the terms of a prior agreement, ALT has the first right to
purchase one hundred percent of the nameplate capacity (5,000 gallons
per day) production of the LNG facility which is owned by a
wholly-owned subsidiary of Prometheus Energy Company at the Frank R.
Bowerman Landfill. ALT markets the LNG to the Orange County
Transportation Authority.

  ALT's Vice President of Operations, Kevin Markey, said, "We are
excited to incorporate renewable LNG from landfill gas into our
growing California market. The demand for clean, transportation-grade
LNG in California has never been higher."

  Solid waste landfills produce a 50% methane gas as a result of the
decomposition of organic materials within the landfill. The Bowerman
production facility is the first of its kind in the U.S. to
commercially produce renewable vehicle-grade LNG from landfill gas.

  Transportation grade LNG helps companies meet strict emission
standards in the state of California. Vehicles fueled by the
transportation grade LNG produce approximately one-sixth of the
nitrous oxides (NOx) and up to 15 percent less greenhouse gases than
comparable petroleum diesel fueled vehicles.

Dallas, TX--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Earth Biofuels, Inc. today announced the completion of a financing needed to finish the construction of "

Willie's Place at Carl's Corner" truck stop located 70 miles south of Dallas on Interstate 35E.

The Company stated that construction on the remaining final phase of the project has already begun and management expects the truck stop to open this summer, 2008.

"We are pleased to begin the final phase of construction on 'Willie's Place'," stated Dennis McLaughlin, CEO and Chairman of Earth Biofuels. "Although the project has experienced delays, we believe once customers and visitors experience this unique truck stop and restaurant they will feel it was worth the wait."

This new roadside destination will feature 13 Ultra-High Flow Master/Satellite dispensers for fueling twelve trucks at a time including a wide load island. There will also be 4 standard-sized fueling stations with 8 pumps. All fuel sold at "Willie's Place" will have some percentage of biofuels, including "BioWillie®" Premium Biodiesel and ethanol, enabling more drivers to participate in the green movement in the United States.
