Final Cut Pro is a software suite created by Apple for video editing.

I started using the program my first semester of film school at NYU, when non-linear video editing was just beginning the incredible trend of accessibility to non-professionals we’ve seen over the past decade.

Flashing back to the early 2000’s, Final Cut was a competitor to Avid, a mammoth software company that completely dominated the professional industry. Mainly because of Final Cut’s more visual, mouse-based format for editing, the program was viewed as unprofessional, and its users thought of as amateur.

However, fundamental change was in the works. The amateurs, working from home, suddenly were allowed to participate in the upper ranks of content production and distribution thanks to the internet and cheap camera technology. Final Cut allowed these early adopters to create new, bold styles of filmmaking with help from the intuitive system Apple created for video editing.

The tipping point came a few years ago when Final Cut penetrated Hollywood. Academy-award-winning filmmakers like the Coen Brothers were using Final Cut to rough cut their films themselves when previously they had no option but to submit to a darkened editing room at a production facility.

Not only did Final Cut penetrate the upper-reaches of the industry, but its more modern workflow became industry standard.

Avid fought back, creating “Express” versions of their software and lowering the sticker price for the “pro-sumer” category. Today, Avid and Final Cut are both heavyweights in their industry. But ask a professional editor in 2001 whether they would consider using Final Cut, and their answer would be drastically different than today.

I bring up this story with Stocktwits in mind — a modern and intuitive system for consuming real-time financial data.

It will be interesting to ask the haters what they think in 5-10 years.

But we love getting your reactions when it does. First off, it lets us know that you’re watching… which is always nice

Most importantly — it helps us add priority to the list of technical issues to resolve. Because there’s certainly no shortage with the current state of live streaming.

There’s so much that could go wrong. Video on the web has matured already in just a few years, and with widespread proficiency of YouTube etc, pretty much everyone knows how easy web video broadcasting can be.

But live broadcasting is in it’s infancy. We have few options for technology providers, and one is more fragile than the other.

Then there’s the broadcasters, scattered in different locations across the country. On different networks with different upload speeds. At various types of computers.

This week a live show had major issues because someone in the same office was uploading a large file to Yousendit — unbeknownst to the broadcaster a few offices away.

High quality live broadcasting is a complicated process built on top the beta version of cutting-edge server and software technology.

But just to reiterate: we hear you. And though you may not hear from us directly, we’re on it. @ reply us, and we guarantee it will climb up the to-do list.

Some incredible developments are coming down the pipeline.

Hang in there — we promise to make it worth the wait.

We’ve fielded tons of suggestions about On Demand… categorizing videos alphabetically, categorizing by most recent, adding descriptions about the content of the show… unfortunately we don’t have the ability to add these features.

While the StockTwitsTV Player is our own special concoction of technology, we didn’t write the code ourselves (though we are working on that). So the On Demand section we have is what we’ve got – and the best use of the section from a user-experience standpoint is to display only the most recent episode of each show.

We’re constantly updating our archives, where every episode on StockTwitsTV is available, sorted chronologically by most recent broadcast. Our next focus will be to add episode descriptions, more advanced titles, and a very cool search feature that will bring up all episodes related to a topic, ticker, or person.

As always, we read every suggestion you email or tweet – so keep them coming!

Welcome to StockTwitsTV!

While we certainly aren’t the pioneers of live web video, STTV is perhaps the world’s first truly-independent broadcast network. There are no corporate overseers regulating programming or pushing an agenda of any kind.

We are a live network delivering content that meets our viewers approval.

The big goal is financial education and real-time information, with a small dallop of entertainment thrown in the mix. If you’re watching StockTwitsTV and have some ideas to contribute, you know where to find us. And we will absolutely listen — because we are available to do so. That’s the luxury of not having fancy equipment or the overhead of broadcasting on cable tv, or the need to maintain an FCC license to broadcast.

That said, our concoction of technology is extremely new, and not without it’s limitations. This will be the main focus of this blog: what we can add or change about StockTwitsTV; its content, its interface, and the service as a whole. Maybe if you’re lucky we’ll also let you pick our brains about the secret sauce we’re using to make it all work.

Thanks so much for tuning in. Please collaborate with us to make StocktwitsTV as interactive as possible.
