Glenn Beck urged people not to fill out the race question on the Census because it’s an attempt to increase modern day slavery (emphasis added):

Glenn Beck: Why were they asking the race question, you said when, in 1790? … Right, they want to know, do you count as three-fifths? Do you count at all? So, you have to know how many slaves did you have? People find that offensive today because the idea was, if we’re going to count, we want to know how many are here for services etc. etc. and slaves would get less. Well that’s not right. One. One. ‘I’m not three-fifths, I’m one. Whites are not worth than me.’ Now reverse it, why are they asking this question today?

Stu (Co-Host): Because minorities are worth more than whites.

Glenn Beck: Exactly right. So you will get more dollars if you are a minority. So you are worth more as a minority. Well there is no difference. The reason you don’t answer the race question is because one, everyone counts as one. All men are created equal. If you were offended back in 1790 about slavery and that everyone should count the same, do not answer the race question. How dare you. How dare you. At least in 1790, they were doing it to slow the South down on slavery. To try to stop it as much as they can. Today they are asking the race question to try to increase slavery. Your dependence on the master in Washington. No way, don’t answer that question.

The census is a target for many right-wing extremists, like Glenn Beck, because they are deeply concerned about the implications of an updated and accurate assessment of our nation’s diversity. Glenn Beck’s attacks on the census aren’t new. Neither is his willingness to prey on racial anxieties for political or personal reasons.

When a company chooses to supply Glenn Beck with advertising revenue, they are associating their brand with the aforementioned nonsense and vitriol.

And, this kind of talk is precisely why the StopBeck effort rolls along.

Today, we are announcing three additional sponsors that have pulled their advertisements from Glenn Beck’s show: Weight Watchers, George Foreman Cooking and Sylvan Learning.

These additional sponsor losses bring the total number of sponsors to drop Beck to 119.

Statements from these three advertisers follow:

George Foreman Cooking advertisements began appearing on Glenn Beck’s show on February 11.  After being notified about the presence of these advertisements and Glenn Beck’s incendiary rhetoric, George Foreman Cooking advised that they were pulling their ads.  Their statement:

Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. George Foreman Cooking adheres to a set of media buying guidelines for syndicated programming and for local stations that promote inclusion and help our company reach a broad range of diverse customers. Placement of ads in connection with any program that is contrary to this purpose is in violation of this policy. We have so reminded our advertising agency and have been assured of strict adherence to our policy.

Sylvan Learning advertisements began airing on February 16.  On February 17, they advised that they were pulling their advertisements.  Their statement was short and sweet:

“Sylvan Learning does not support Glenn Beck’s political views. Sylvan will exclude future Fox News Channel commercials from The Glenn Beck Program.”

Weight Watchers advertisements aired several days on Glenn Beck’s show in the U.K. (prior to the past 9 days of sponsor-less shows).  After reaching out to Weight Watchers, they advised that the advertisements were run in error and would no longer appear.  Their statement:

Thank you for contacting us. We apologize if we offended you in any way. The ad that ran in the “Glen Beck” program was unintentional as it is not a part of our media buy. Thanks again for sharing your perspective.

Color of Change also announced additional sponsors that dropped Glenn Beck in the United States. Thirteen of these sponsors were not already on our list of 103 dropped sponsors. When added, they bring the total number of dropped sponsors for Glenn Beck to 116.

Company statements from Color of Change’s press release…

Allstate:

“While we do purchase advertising on Fox News Channel, we did not intentionally purchase commercials in or around the show, ‘The Glen [sic] Beck Program,’ nor do we sponsor the program,” said Jennifer L. Egeland, director of integrated marketing communications for Allstate Insurance Company, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “You should not expect to see Allstate advertising during this program in the future.”

Anheuser-Busch:

“Our company has not agreed to advertise during the Glenn Beck show,” said Johnny Furr, vice president of community affairs for Anheuser-Busch, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “We purchase advertising on the Fox News Channel for time slots other than this show, and the ad you saw inadvertently ran during that program.”

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals:

“Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc. does not intend to advertise during the Glen [sic] Beck Show and has communicated this to the FOX network,” said Susan Holz, Senior PR Specialist for the company, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.

Brother International Corporation:

“Moving forward, Brother won’t have it on there [Beck's show],” said Peggy Carlton, account executive for Brother International at MS&L Worldwide, in a voice mail message to ColorOfChange.org. “Moving forward there won’t be any specifically on Glenn Beck.”

Idaho Potato Commission:

“It has been our long-standing policy to not advertise on any controversial programs,” said Frank Muir, President & CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “We have informed FOX that the Idaho Potato Commission will no longer advertise on the Glen [sic] Beck Show.”

Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School:

“I first learned about this controversy [in November] and asked Fox to take his show out of our rotation,” said Steve Schwartz, executive vice president of consumer services for Intersections, Inc., in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “We no longer advertise on Glenn Beck’s show.” Angela Loiacono, manager of corporate communications at Career Education Corporation (CEC), parent company of Le Cordon Bleu Culinary School, confirmed that CEC had asked Fox News not to allow its ads to run during Glenn Beck’s program. “Our commercials…should be off-air in mid-February,” said Loiacono in an email to ColorOfChange.org.

Marriott International:

“We do not intend to have any additional ad placements during the program,” said Jeff Flaherty, spokesperson for Marriott International, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “I’d like to point out that diversity and inclusion are core values at Marriott and an essential component of our success.”

Republic of Macedonia:

“Although we only have a few more spots left to air on Fox, we have requested that the remaining spots not be aired during Glenn Beck’s program,” said Natali Rancevic, a spokesperson for the Republic of Macedonia, Agency of Foreign Investments, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “Fox has agreed to honor our request.”

United Healthcare:

“Back in August of this year United Healthcare instructed FOX News to not run any of our ads during the Glenn Beck show,” said Lynne High, director of media relations, in an email to ColorOfChange.org.

US Fidelis:

“We are no longer advertising on this show or station,” said Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, marketing coordinator for US Fidelis, in an email to ColorOfChange.org. “Thank you for bringing this to our attention.”

This brings the total number of sponsors to drop Glenn Beck to 103.

Their statement was a bit unclear, so I contacted Celsius to clarify.

They advised: “We were not tracking the ad placement detail. Based on consumer’s request, we reviewed the situation further, and we found we were able to make the change which occurred several weeks ago.” They also confirmed for me that they have taken measures to ensure that their advertisements will not appear on Glenn Beck’s show going forward.

In the past two weeks, Glenn Beck lost his 100th, 10st and 102nd sponsor.

[Update #2, 2/17/10]: Color of Change announced additional companies that dropped Glenn Beck, bringing total number of lost sponsors to 116.

His sponsor lost seems to be having a real effect as his show in the U.K. was without sponsors the past 10 days.  This must be striking a nerve as the right-wing attack machine is already churning out nonsense.

Now, this effort continues…and here are some ways that you can help out.

#1) Spread The Word

• Tell your friends about our StopBeck effort, post a link to StopBeck.com on your Facebook page, etc…
• If you have a blog, add StopBeck.com to your blogroll.  Or, if you feel like getting fancy, add a StopBeck badge to your site (see sidebar).
• If you see a blog post that fails to mention Glenn Beck’s lost sponsors even though it is relevant to the topic of the post: leave a comment about his lost sponsors and point them to http://stopbeck.com [Note: This is crucial to spreading the word about our effort.  But, I am not asking you to spam the blogosphere.  Please make sure the comment is relevant. Spreading the word about his lost sponsors helps improve the comment thread on that site - and it also helps our effort.]

#2) Consider Offering A Small Donation

It seems like our efforts are having an effect…

Glenn Beck’s show in the United Kingdom has not run any commercials during the past three days (Tues-Thurs). Glenn Beck’s show in the UK used to run commercials.  The shows that come on before and after Glenn Beck still run commercials.  But, for the past three days, Mr. Beck hasn’t had any sponsors in the U.K.  During the commercial break, instead of running ads, they cut away to Sky News updates or the weather.  Perhaps they’re having trouble finding sponsors willing to subsidize Glenn Beck’s misinformation, vitriol, sexism and race-baiting?

This really is great news and testament to the continued participation in this effort by many.

StopBeck – UK posted video of a commercial break for Glenn Beck’s show in the UK compared with another Fox News Channel show broadcast in the UK.  You’ll see that Glenn Beck’s show is no longer runs paid advertisements, whereas other Fox News Channel shows in the UK continue to have paid ads:

Now, keep in mind, this is from the same guy that apparently gets a real laugh out of mocking homeless people who ask him for money.  In June 2003, Glenn Beck launched a “new car fund,” which he asked his fans to fill for him.  Mind you, this is real – not a joke. From his website:

“Now is your chance to real [sic] make a difference in someone’s life” … by giving money to someone with more money than you, so he can buy a new car.

This morning, StarKist (tuna) became the 102nd sponsor to drop Glenn Beck.

StarKist’s statement (emphasis added):

Our television media purchases are dictated by our marketing plan and are chosen based on time of day, such as early morning (6:00 – 10:00 a.m.) or primetime (8:00 to 11:00 p.m.); channel (ABC, Lifetime, ESPN, etc.) and audience demographics.

We do not dictate what program is on when our commercial airs. But we do frequently evaluate our media purchases to ensure that the programs we choose match our brand’s target demographics and overall advertising plan. In doing so, we have chosen to not air our commercial during Glenn Beck’s program going forward given a number of alternatives that meet our advertising plan’s criteria.

When will media stop ignoring Glenn Beck’s continued sponsor loss? When will they start asking Fox News to account for Mr. Beck’s vitriolic, sexist and racially charged tirades?

BECK: He chose to use his name, Barack, for a reason. To identify, not with America — you don’t take the name Barack to identify with America. You take the name Barack to identify with what? Your heritage? The heritage, maybe, of your father in Kenya, who is a radical? Really? Searching for something to give him any kind of meaning, just as he was searching later in life for religion.

Responding to this absurd and bigoted attack, a coalition of civil rights groups denounced Glenn Beck’s remarks.  The coalition includes: America’s Voice, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), Center for New Community, Color of Change, NCLR (National Council of La Raza), Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition and Media Matters.

Their joint statement:

Glenn Beck’s comments reveal the depth of his failure to grasp the true nature of America and of the American people. Ours is a nation of immigrants. Ours is a nation of proud individuals who celebrate their heritage as surely as they love the country in which they live. Ours is a nation that draws strength from its diversity, rather than rejecting it. And America is not a country that defines citizenship or patriotism based on color, or creed, or name.

In 2004, Senator Barack Obama explained that when growing up, he possessed “the hope of a skinny kid with a funny name who believes that America has a place for him, too.” And he was right. It does. Mr. Beck’s inability to accept this fundamental quality of our nation — or at the very least his willingness to pander to those who reject it — should trouble us all. He owes an apology to the people of this great country.

Actually Glenn, the First Lady didn’t call her kids “fatties,” nor did she suggest anything of the sort.  The only person using the term “fatties” is you.

Glenny, you’ve got plenty of misinforming and preying on racial anxiety to do.  So, how about you steer clear of the kids, okay?
