Alex Blaszczynski, Professor of Psychology at the University of Sydney, says there is a trend toward online sports betting which has altered the pattern of problem gambling presentations at the various University’s Gambling Treatment Clinic.

The internationally recognised gambling expert says:

“Problem gambling has certainly moved away from the traditional picture of a person sitting for hours on end at a poker machine.

“While we are still seeing these clients, we are seeing that young men in particular are turning to gambling on sports. These young men are reporting difficulties controlling their internet-based sports betting in increasing numbers.

“Looking at our client numbers, we had approximately a 70 percent increase in the number of sports betting clients from 2008-2009 to 2010-2011.”

The figures are not difficult to explain, says Professor Blaszczynski. “With more and more people gaining access to higher internet speeds, and wireless internet via their smart phones, you can literally gamble anytime, anywhere.

“Obviously all this makes it easier for people to gamble and increase their risk of higher rates of problem gambling.

“With the footy season soon underway we are expecting to see a raise in the young male clients present with these problems.”

Christopher Hunt, clinical psychologist at the University of Sydney Gambling Treatment Clinic, said a few years ago the majority of the people who visited the clinic gambled only on poker machines.

“However today, we are seeing many young men, who are losing large sums of money from betting on sports over the internet. They can literally lose a fortune without even leaving the comfort of their own home.”

Mr. Hunt notes a link between this rise and the increased promotion of gambling through the sports media. “It is difficult to watch most kinds of sporting matches these days without being made aware of the prices that various outlets are giving for bets,” he says.

“In this environment it is natural that many people with an interest in sports may try their luck by gambling on the sports they enjoy. Unfortunately some of these people will lose more than they planned to and become problem gamblers”.

"Online sports betting has created new generation of problem gamblers: "

Smoking initiation at a young age tied to greater risk of illicit drug use

Young people who start smoking at an early age have a much higher risk of starting to use cannabis by the time they turn 17. Risk factors that increase the likelihood of starting to smoke include externalising problem behaviours such as impulsiveness. Smoking, in turn, is a significant risk factor for cannabis use. These results have been confirmed in a project researching smoking at an early age and externalising behaviour as predictors of drug use. The project has been funded by the Academy of Finland’s Research Programme on Substance Use and Addictions.

By the time the adolescents were 17, some 15 per cent of the girls and 12 per cent of the boys participating in the study had used cannabis or other illicit substances at least once. The identified predictors of drug use were female gender, binge drinking, father’s binge drinking, smoking peers and acquaintances with drug experience, and aggressive behaviour among boys. Early smoking onset was an especially powerful predictor. Compared to never-smokers, those who had started smoking by the age of 12 or earlier were 26 times more likely to start using drugs by age 17 (Korhonen et al. 2008).

The project made good use of data collected in the FinnTwin12 study, a Finnish-American birth cohort study initiated in 1994 to examine genetic and environmental determinants of precursors of health-related behaviours. The project gathered questionnaire and interview data on twins aged 12, 14 and 17, and also collected information from their parents and teachers. The present study also involved researchers from the Netherlands in connection with the Vidi-project and the TRacking Adolescents’ Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS) project.

Gateway theory revisited

In one of the studies of the project, researchers examined individual, peer and family factors as predictors of starting to use drugs at the age of 17, the age by which some 15 per cent of the girls and 12 per cent of the boys participating in the study had used cannabis or other illicit substances at least once. Early smoking was identified as an especially significant predictor. This finding was replicated also in the data collected in the Netherlands (Korhonen et al. 2010a).

“The findings support the gateway hypothesis (Kandel et al. 2006), which asserts that licit substances such as tobacco and alcohol are a stepping stone to harder, illicit drugs. The theory has come under much criticism in recent years. Many have argued that certain common factors may explain both smoking and drug use, factors such as problem behaviour and genetic influences. That’s why we wanted to look into these issues more deeply in our studies,” says Adjunct Professor Tellervo Korhonen, one of the researchers on the team.

The second sub-study compared alternative structural equation models. The first model proposed a causal association between early-onset smoking and the subsequent onset of drug use, while the second model proposed that both smoking and drug use are a result of common genetic and/or environmental vulnerabilities. The first model, where the early smoking affected the early onset of drug use, had a somewhat better fit with the data. However, the researchers were not able to rule out the role of common genetic factors either (Huizink et al. 2010). A similar conclusion was reached in a study based on US material, published shortly after this study (Agrawal et al. 2010).

Feeling the need for weed

The third sub-study analysed the associations between externalising problem behaviour, the early onset of smoking and drug use. The results suggest that externalising behaviours, such as hyperactivity, impulsiveness and aggressiveness, are predictors of early smoking, which in turn is a strong risk factor for drug use. In most of the models analysed, the association of problem behaviour with drug use was mediated through early smoking (Korhonen et al. 2010b).

“This can be interpreted so that impulsive tendencies lead to an increased risk of experimenting with different problem behaviours. If young people have access to tobacco, it’s very likely that they’ll try it quite early, which may later lead to experimenting with other psychoactive substances such as cannabis,” says Korhonen.

The study was part of a larger research project led by Professor Jaakko Kaprio, “Predictors, neuropsychological correlates, and consequences of cannabis and alcohol use among Finnish young adults – a twin and population approach”, which was funded by the Academy of Finland’s Research Programme on Substance Use and Addictions.

"Smoking initiation at a young age tied to greater risk of illicit drug use: "

Gambling problems are more common than drinking problems

After age 21, problem gambling is considerably more common among U.S. adults than alcohol dependence, even though alcohol dependence has received much more attention, according to researchers at the University at Buffalo’s Research Institute on Addictions.

In results published this month in the Journal of Gambling Studies, John W. Welte, principal investigator on the study and a national expert on alcohol and gambling pathology, concluded that there is a distinct inconsistency between his research and much of the other research literature. Other research supports the proposition that problem gambling is more common among adolescents than among adults. Problem gambling has often been described as rare. Even the National Council on Problem Gambling describes it as “rare but treatable.”

Welte and colleagues conducted, then combined, results from two national surveys of gambling and alcohol — one of youth ages 14-21 and the second of adults 18 and older — to identify patterns of U.S. gambling and alcohol use across the lifespan. They found that gambling, frequent gambling and problem gambling increases in frequency during the teen years, reaches its highest level in the 20s and 30s and then fall off among those over 70.

“No comparable analysis has been done previously and therefore none is available for a direct comparison of these results,” Welte says. “But, given what we found about the persistence of frequent and problem gambling through adulthood, increased prevention and intervention efforts are warranted.”

Other results detailed in the article demonstrate that frequent gambling is twice as great among men (28 percent) as among women (13 percent). Men reach their highest rates of both any gambling and frequent gambling in the late teens, while females take longer to reach their highest rates.

The odds of any gambling in the past year are significantly higher for whites than for blacks or Asians, although the odds of frequent gambling are higher for blacks and Native Americans, the study found.

It is also notable that frequent and problem gambling become more common as socioeconomic status (SES) gets lower; gambling involvement tends to decline as SES rises. Welte speculated as early as 2004 that lower SES Americans may pursue gambling as a way to make money, leading to more difficulties than if their motivation were strictly recreational.

Welte’s first telephone survey of adult gambling was conducted in 1999-2000 with 2,631 adults from 4,036 households nationwide. The second survey of youth gambling in 2005-2007 included 2,274 youth — with parental permission — from 4,467 households. Both surveys were conducted with residents drawn from all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Questions asked of those who agreed to participate ranged from frequency of drinking, quantity and type of alcoholic beverage to frequency of past-year gambling and type of gambling, such as raffles, cards, casinos, sports betting, horse or dog track, lottery involvement and games of skill.

"Gambling problems are more common than drinking problems: "

Drug Prevention Strategy|A Concerned Parent

There are two ingredients that when combined form a high likelihood for drug use or abuse. They are a teenager, and former isolation. A teenager with a lot of time on their hands, or one who is simply “hanging out” is at very high risk for experimentation or drug use itself.

A national adolescent health study indicated a set of related risk factors that produce a likelihood of up teenager using drugs 3 to 8 times more likely than the average teenager. These risk factors included time hanging out, in failure in school.

On the flipside this study showed that teenagers who reported a high level of connection to their parents were the least likely group to engage in risky behaviors such as drug use and abuse. A positive and supportive of dull, parent or family relationship is the greatest deterrent for drug use.

How, exactly do you maintain a connection with the teenager? The answer is amazingly simple and frustratingly complex. Talk to them and listen to them. Here are some pointers that can help you out:

· One of the rules of communication is that when someone talks, you listen. When you talk, they listen. No interruptions.

· Have realistic and open discussion about the dangers of drug use. Drug use is not a problem that will go away is simply ignored. If necessary, educate yourself.

· Ask for your teenager’s points of view and opinions and listen to them.

· Give your child lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement.

· Be very consistent in setting and maintaining rules, boundaries, and limitations.

· Be interested in their world and their activities, know who they are hanging out with. Discourage a lot of “down time”.

Aside from maintaining open communication lines, talking and listening to your children, there is one more critical thing you can do is apparent all pay off big time. That is, spend time with your children. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in a hostile and bustle of the modern-day world but in reality isn’t the most important thing your family? Isn’t the best investment you can make spending time with your children?

The 1st warning sign of drug abuse might be the easy reality that you’re searching at this listing of signs. There’s an old saying that states in the event you believe there might possibly be an issue, then there most likely is one.

Here is the list of warning signs:

1. Increase of tolerance. This means you need to take more of the drug to get the effect you’re looking for or, in taking the same amount you are getting less effect.

2. Temporary loss of memory. These include blackouts, not being able to remember what you have said the night before, and general difficulty with recalling facts.

3. Preoccupation with drugs. This means you are thinking about the more it more. Even when you are not using, you’re wondering how soon you can be, how much, where you can get them, etc. often spoken of as obsession and compulsion.

4. Loss of control. This refers the inability to set and maintain boundaries around use. For instance saying you’re just going to have two lines of cocaine and you end up doing an entire eight ball. Another example is saying you only have two drinks insistently cannot stick to that limit.

5. People are commenting on your drug use. Friends and family start noticing your use and ask you to slow down or quit. It is often evident to the people around the user that there is a problem before it is evident to the user themselves.

6. Escape, or “geographical cure”. Problems start manifesting themselves in life. The user blames the job, the friends, the city they’re living in. They may move, start a new job, or stop associating with people who care.

7. Ethical deterioration’s. People using drugs slide very gradually behaviors and beliefs that they normally would not consider. Examples are lying, stealing, fighting, low self-esteem, guilt and shame.

8. Periodic abstinence. A drug user will often attempt to quit for a day, a week, etc. to “prove” that they do not have a problem. This may or may not be accomplished (see loss of control). But, the very fact that efforts to control use are going on is indication of a problem. People without a drug problem do not have to meet efforts to control their use.

9. Unmanageability, negative consequences. This simply means that when drug use occurs bad stuff happens. Examples of negative consequences can be arrests, DUIs, fights, divorces, loss of jobs, on and on. The difficulty here is the drug abuser cannot did the negative consequences occurring in his life his injuries a direct result is drug use not simply a matter of bad luck.

10. Psychological dependence. The easiest and simplest way to understand this to understand the concept that when drug use becomes a “need” instead of a desire, you have crossed a line.

We hope this list of warning signs of drug abuse provided some insight for you, or perhaps someone you love and you are concerned about. Bottom line, get help. Drug and alcohol abuse and addiction is something that does not get better by simply ignoring it. Drug addiction is a progressive disease and always progresses toward the wars never toured the better.

For people who have mental health issues such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, and depression dual diagnosis addiction treatment focuses completely on the patients and their well being during and after recovery.

When a person has mental health issues they are less prone to make it through a normal addiction treatment program mostly because they already do not have the will power to conquer their addiction, but adding stress from recovery will only worsen their condition. In dual diagnosis addiction treatment a recovering addict will be taught how to handle life without their addiction through daily counseling sessions that help them grow mentally and emotionally so that they can make it through addiction treatment and stay sober.

Illnesses such as bipolar disorder and depression can cause a person to turn to drugs as a coping method, but in some cases addicts getting treatment obtain these mental health problems while in recovery. The addicts with these problems are in a much more life threatening state than a person who is just an addict because at any moment they can snap and kill themselves or others around them. The duty of dual diagnosis is to safely help the addict conquer their addiction with little to no problems and help them handle their life while overcoming their mental health issues.

If you or someone you know for has both a mental health issue and an addiction problem, look no more. There are programs near you that can help you or your loved one safely overcome addiction and give you or them the tools to handle their life without their addiction so that they can conquer any other obstacles that will come into yours or their lives. Call A Forever Recovery today so that you or your loved one can get started on the journey towards total recovery.

"Dual Diagnosis and Addiction: "

The Truth about Alcohol Addiction

The truth about alcohol addiction is more shocking than many people think. Some people think that alcohol addiction is no big deal, mainly because alcohol is legal and because alcohol addiction is not something that has been a big issue in the past.

Throughout history people would drink alcohol when they were happy, sad, at dinner, and even just when they were thirsty. Alcohol was not considered something that could be an addiction, but in recent years people have been proving that alcohol addiction can effect how a person acts and lives. The truth about Alcohol Addiction is it’s exactly like a drug addiction and effects a person’s brain and body just like it were a drug addiction. There are life long problems for a person who is an alcoholic such as brain damage, memory loss, trouble learning, problems with their anger, family troubles, poverty, and problems with his or her heart and organs that are fatal. All of these issues are real issues that come from alcohol addiction and a person who is a long time alcoholic will experience most, if not all of these side effects.

Alcohol addiction also effects a person’s outward appearance. Alcoholics are known to have rosy cheeks, be plump from the amount of sugars and fatty content that are in alcohol, and have aged and unhealthy looking skin. Some of these side effects can be reversed, but for many people addicted to alcohol, their physical problems make it clear to others that they have an addiction.

Alcohol addiction is something that was once thought of as rare, but today there are more alcoholics in the world than drug addicts. With the number of alcoholics increasing daily, alcohol rehab has become the best solution for any alcoholic to go when they are trying to recover from alcoholism. You as the sex addict will enter into the rehabilitation center where you will have a sort of detoxification. This detoxification is a 60 to 90 day period of complete abstinence from sexual intercourse. During this time, you will learn how to challenge yourself in your everyday life and what has triggered you to have a psychological addiction to sex. Many sex addiction treatments rely on changing your inner self and helping you see what is not okay with a sex addiction. It is a mental addiction that causes you to do things you would normally never do. Having multiple sex partners can cause serious problems in your love life, family life, and personal life.

Sex addiction treatment tries to unlock the problems from within you and help you see that sex addiction is not something that you have to live with forever. Sex is a natural way of life that is good, but too much sex with multiple partners is a pathway towards destruction. When it comes to sex addiction treatment it is all about talking about your addiction and learning to manage a normal life without the need to have sex.

Once you have been able to learn about yourself and others just like you, you can have the option to continue therapy which is recommended after your sex addiction treatment. Sex addiction is like any other addiction and has the potential to come back into ones life. After sex addiction treatment you should have sex still, but with someone you care for and not to the point of it controlling your life. If you think you are ready to make the commitment towards a life free from the bondage of living with an addiction to sex, make the call A Forever Recovery today. You deserve to live a life where you are in total control, you can make the difference today.

"Sex Addiction Treatment: "
