When a person formed a pattern of reaching for junk food any time that stress levels and emotions are running high, it is referred to as emotional eating. When they make the decision to lose weight and attempt to change this type of behavior they must take the time to learn how to recognize the emotional eating triggers that are responsible for causing them to overeat.

Sitting down with a paper and pen in hand to write down each of the situations that cause a person to eat during stressful times when emotions are high is often rather easy for a lot of people. The hard part comes in when it is time to begin changing the old behaviors that they have formed. The men and women that are used to giving in to their emotional eating triggers and have done so for quite a few years will often find this particular challenge much more difficult than a person that has just started this bad habit.

Once you have taken a long hard look at the emotional eating triggers that have taken over your life, you can then begin to replace the habit of reaching for food with a much better and healthier action. If there are times you face that are completely overwhelming and you feel like you cannot resist the urge to eat, make sure that you reach for healthy snacks like carrot sticks, an orange, or other type of fruit or vegetable that contains a high level of the essential vitamins and minerals. The key is to stay completely away from the foods that are known for their power to pack on the extra weight.
There are many men and women that are able to get through times they are experiencing emotional eating triggers without reaching for food by grabbing one of their favorite books instead. Keeping the hands busy during these times is important. Activities like crocheting, playing cards, working word search or crossword puzzles have also been found to help a great deal.

Another important aspect of successfully learning how to ignore emotional eating triggers that have had their hold on you for years is to make certain you have a caring and helpful support system. Close friends and family members can provide lots of help during stressful times that you feel you are going to give in to the urges you are experiencing. Many people tend to also find that they can often suggest other helpful tools to win the battle against the emotional eating triggers that provoke the unhealthy habit of reaching for junk food.

There are possibly more people today than any other time in our history that are becoming conscientious about losing weight and the overall condition of their health and well-being. This has also sparked the interest of many people to discover effective methods that give them the ability to lose weight fast. While losing excess pounds quickly is possible, while doing so it is important to take the necessary steps to maintain good health of the entire body at the same time.

A Common Mistake Often Made When People Shed Pounds Quickly

There are countless techniques, tips, and tricks that can be found in just about any place that you look, including numerous options on the Internet. A common mistake that quite a few people make while trying to lose weight fast using various techniques is they do not make long term changes to their current lifestyle. What generally happens is a person will commit to a crash diet or other type of fad diet just long enough to lose a few quick pounds. Then, they go right back to their normal eating patterns.

Changes Must Be Made to Your Lifestyle to Lose Weight Fast and Keep it off

Common sense will tell you that if a person returns to their old eating habits after they’ve successfully lost the pounds they wanted to get rid of, they are likely to gain it all right back. To lose body fat and to maintain an ideal weight it is necessary to pay close attention to the specific types of foods that are included in your diet. Food items that are crammed full of fat and carbohydrates have to be avoided. The same is true for foods and beverages that contain large amounts of sugar.
There are several websites online that give detailed information on foods that will not pack on the pounds. They also contain information in regards to items that contain high levels of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients. The idea is to replace junk food items with healthier foods that will supply you with a lot of nutrition. While it may take a bit of time to get used to eating differently, once you see these are changes will help you lose weight fast, it will become like second nature to only select items that are good for you. Drinking adequate amounts of water each and every day is also a vital part of shedding the pounds and remaining healthy at the same time.

Binge eating is when someone goes through an episode of extreme over eating. This episode is generally quite brief but the person binging consumes huge amounts of food during the episode. Most people have had some sort of binge eating on occasion but it becomes a serious problem if it is a frequent occurrence. When also accompanied by purging (making oneself vomit), laxative use or other similar behaviors, it has crossed the line to an actual eating disorder.

For those who eat due to emotional reasons and start binge eating, stress management techniques could be very helpful. Many, many people eat due to stress in their lives and stress doesn’t have to be overt. Depression causes stress, relationship problems cause stress, even overeating itself can cause stress. That’s why for so many who find themselves binge eating, stress management can make a world of difference.

Particularly for binge eating, stress management will start with identifying what is causing the stress. One way of identifying the stressors that trigger binge eating is to keep a food diary for a week to a month. Jot down everything you eat, along with the time, and what you are feeling when you eat. This will enable you to look back and spot the danger signals of an episode of binge eating. Stress management can then be tailored to help find alternative ways to reduce stress other than eating.

Once you’ve identified what is stressing you out to the point of binge eating, stress management techniques can offer a new way to handle the stress. Techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and exercise can help you avoid binge eating and discover new ways to relax. Naturally, the first thing is to try to eliminate as much stress as possible.

Eliminating stress isn’t always possible but you can replace the binge eating with other activities that are healthier. Meditation is very effective at relieving stress and can also help you get in touch with your spiritual side. Part of meditation involves learning how to clear your mind of all the negative thoughts and harmful energies. When you get good at this, it can eliminate the need to eat in order to feel better.

Deep breathing stems from a yoga practice and is a good way to help yourself relax and clear your mind. As a matter of fact, that can help you get into the meditative state but deep breathing can also be practiced by itself as a relaxation technique. One way to do this is to take a deep breath and imagine that you’re pulling the air through your toes and up through your entire body, then exhale slowly. Do this ten times and your whole body will feel more relaxed.

Exercise is always a good stress management technique. Not only does exercise release endorphins, the ?feel good? hormones, but it also helps to tone muscle and lose weight. As time goes on, you start seeing and feeling the results which gives you encouragement to continue and lowers the desire for binge eating. Stress management comes from the good feelings at the time of the exercise and continues on when you see the welcome effects.

As quite a few men and women find out each year, stress eating is a problem that can quickly begin to add on the pounds. This in turn can begin a vicious cycle of numerous other emotional and physical health problems appearing. Everyone knows that being overweight is unhealthy. However, not as many people understand just how unhealthy it can be to cover up stress with this type of behavior, rather than using coping skills to deal with stressful situations.

A vast majority of the time, when a person battles the poor habit of stress eating, they tend to reach for food items that do not contain any type of nutritive value. Instead many men and women with this type of problem will frequently reach for junk foods that are high in salt and sugar content. This brings us to the first and most important step that a person should take when they find themselves grabbing unhealthy foods when times become stressful and overwhelming.

To effectively be able to break the bad habit of stress eating, it is vital for all types of junk foods and drinks to be removed from the home. Food items like this will also need to remain off the grocery list, and replaced with better choices that include fruits and vegetables that are high in vitamins and minerals. When sugary, salty, or oily foods are not obtainable during times when stressful situations arise and become overwhelming, the person can then replace these items with a healthy snack. Not only do snacks like celery or carrot sticks, grapes, and oranges taste great, but they also supply the body with essential vitamins and minerals that are good for you. These snacks decrease the likelihood that a person will run into problems with being overweight in the future.

Another great way that several people have found to be quite effective when they are attempting to begin a life that does not involve stress eating, is keeping numbers handy of those that will provide positive support. Many people are often surprised at how many of their friends and family have also experienced problems with stress eating when they begin building a contact list for support. It is often much easier to overcome problems like this when you have someone to talk to that has already walked in your shoes. They can also share effective approaches that they have found to help them beat the urges to eat when stress and emotions run high.

Men and women that struggle with the urge to eat when strong feelings of emotion and stress overwhelm them into eating often feel completely out of control. This is an eating disorder that affects numerous people, and it can ultimately cause depression and numerous other health problems. When a person eats during times of stress, it can also cause the battle they fight against being overweight to be almost impossible to win. The good news is there are several different steps that can be taken that will effectively eliminate this behavior and stop emotional eating. In achieving this goal, it provides people with the ability to regain control of their food.

One of the first steps that a person should take is to change the way in which they think. In many cases when a person eats excessively when stressful or emotional situations arise, they do so in an instant reaction. This type of pattern needs to be changed and replaced with a much healthier reaction. To stop emotional eating successfully, it requires a conscious effort to change the old ways and habits formed from unhealthy thinking patterns. This can be done in many different ways. Some people have found a tremendous amount of benefit by simply reaching for word search puzzles or crossword puzzles when they feel the urge coming on to eat from stress related issues.

It is also necessary to recognize the triggers that are responsible for causing a person to eat when emotions are high. By knowing what these triggers are, a person can better avoid specific situations and circumstances that have been known to cause their impulse to eat when emotions are high. It can be very helpful for a person to know the signs that certain events are about to take place that typically cause them to experience excessive stress. When a person knows what these signs are they can form a routine of simply removing themselves from these situations before they even occur and stop emotional eating before it happens.

Taking a closer look at the list of food items that are purchased for meals and snacks is also a good idea. By removing junk foods and unhealthy snack foods from the home and no longer putting them on your grocery list, it will increase the chances of being successful in your fight to stop emotional eating. These should be replaced with foods like celery, carrot sticks, and other fruits and vegetable items. It is after all, much healthier to reach for fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in times that stress and high emotions feel as if they are overwhelming.

When some people have problems in being able to deal with stress they face in their life, they turn to other things for relief. In a lot of cases a person will begin eating excessive amounts of food to find relief and comfort from the stress they are experiencing. Unfortunately, this type of behavior will frequently only adds additional problems they must face in being overweight. There are some effective steps a person can take however for overcoming emotional eating. They not only help to relieve stress, but they also help to prevent problems with various types of health issues that being overweight can ultimately cause.

Cleansing Breaths

The first step to overcoming emotional eating is to relax and breathe calmly at the first sign of stress. Although it may sound too simple to be true, cleansing breaths can actually do wonders when stress becomes an issue. Simply inhale deeply through the nostrils and slowly exhale through the mouth. This exercise can be performed any time the signs of stress begin. Relaxing the body and mind will help a person to focus more clearly, reducing their desire to focus on food.

Accept Your Situation and Express Your Feelings

Being able to accept stressful situations is often hard for a lot of people. However, when stressful situations occur, it is much healthier to redirect the mind towards an acceptance of situations that cannot be changed. It is also a great step for effectively overcoming emotional eating. Some people also find it beneficial to write down the exact stress factors they are facing.

It is also beneficial to write down each way that the stress affects the body. It is important to learn how to soothe constricted muscles, tenseness and other symptoms of stress that affect the body. Rather than feeding into the stress by reaching for food, overcoming emotional eating can begin with simple steps of acceptance and expression.

Avoid Stressful Situations

This is perhaps one of the most important steps a person can take when they are trying to break old patterns of overeating during times of stress. While not every single stressful situation can be avoided, most all of us can usually tell when a certain situation is about to turn stressful. These are the exact times of situations that should be avoided at all cost. This is especially true when you have just started a plan for overcoming emotional eating.

With buffets located in nearly every district of every city, its easy to see why Americans are gaining weight and obesity rates are rising at an all-time high. Sadly, many of our foods are specifically intended to stimulate appetite and enhance flavor, as this increases profits for corporate food producers. Indeed, trying to stop eating too much is a battle against not only your own temptations, but also the very ingredients in the food that you consume. Fortunately, even if you have no confidence in your ability to refrain from eating massive amounts of food when tempted, you should know that you can train your body to stop eating too much by taking a more conscientious and natural approach to hunger and appetite.

Eat Slowly, Chew Thoroughly

The primary purpose of eating is to absorb nutrients from the foods we consume. However, most people do not chew their foods thoroughly enough to obtain optimal nutrient absorption. By chewing your food into small morsels and savoring each bite, you’ll not only simplify digestion and maximize the nutrients assimilated from each meal (causing your body to sense that it is full faster), you’ll also be able to enjoy your food for longer periods of time. In fact, studies have shown that our saliva is capable of aiding in the digestion of fats by up to 30%, which indicates that our mouth is the actual beginning of our digestive tract.

Eat When You’re Hungry

Although it may seem counterintuitive to eat liberally while you’re trying to stop eating too much, this is perhaps the easiest way to avoid binge eating. Instead of suppressing your appetite and waiting all day for one meal (which usually causes one to eat a large meal at the end of the day), eat whatever you’d like, whenever you’d like, in small amounts. By eating what you want as soon as the craving arrives you’ll find it easier to limit how much you consume, as your hunger will not yet have become insatiable. Many binge eaters restrict themselves from eating for the majority of the day, only to eat an exuberant amount before bed. Since the body is far more efficient at digesting foods and absorbing nutrients during the day many diets call for dieters to restrict all food intake after 6 PM.

Try to Schedule Servings

Although its important to never suppress your appetite, its also imperative to maintain a consistent, balanced diet. Instead of eating at random times throughout the day and depending solely on cravings, consider scheduling calculated servings of whole foods to be eaten throughout the day. This will help you eliminate unforeseen temptations, while also ensuring optimal nutrition intake on a routine basis. Ideally, you’ll want to acquire a taste for healthy, nutritious foods, and then keep those foods easily accessible in your refrigerator and pantry. This way you’ll be able to grab a quick, beneficial snack before or during any activity, without the additional guilt or gut associated with conventional snack foods.

There can be quite a few triggers that can happen in a person’s life that can lead to overeating to deal with stressful situations. As a matter of fact there are numerous men and women that form a strong habit of overeating during times of stress. This of course generally results in even more problems of being overweight. There are however quite a few emotional eating tips that can help to reduce the struggle that many people face with this issue. Below you will find some of the most effective tools that have proven to work rather well for individuals that are trying to break the habit of eating while they are stressed.

Keep Your Mind Prepared

We all know that no matter what steps we take to stay away from stressful situations, there are some circumstances that simply cannot be avoided. This is one of the emotional eating tips that can be the hardest to achieve when the goal is to stop consuming food under stress. It is important however to know the signs to watch for that are known triggers for this type of behavior. When a person keeps their mind on guard at all times, it is easier to form better habits of focusing on healthier things.

Keep a List Handy Containing Other Activities to Change the Minds Focus

There are numerous types of fun and healthy activities that a person can take part in that can reduce the chances of giving in and turning to food during a stressful situation. Puzzle books like word search, Sudoku, and word find can refocus the mind and keep the hands busy. Things like sewing, crocheting, reading a favorite book, or writing a letter to a friend or relative, or even taking a walk through the park can also be very effective.

Avoid Adding Comfort Foods to Your Grocery List

This is perhaps one of the most important emotional eating tips that should be incorporated into any person’s plans that want to achieve a healthier emotional wellbeing. If the urge to eat during stressful times becomes overwhelming, it is much easier to avoid unhealthy and fattening foods if there aren’t any in the house. Instead, plan a grocery list that includes healthy snacks like carrot sticks and other fruits and vegetables that have a high level of antioxidants.

Replace Stress with Cleansing Breaths

At the very second that you feel like you are becoming stressed, learn to immediately close your eyes and take a few cleansing deep breaths. Many people are often surprised at how much this step can actually help reduce the urge to begin eating when stress appears. All that you need to do is close your eyes and clear the mind of all thoughts. Simply take a deep breath in through your nose, and then slowly exhale the air from the mouth. During excessively stressful times this exercise may need to be repeated several times before the mind and body will begin to relax.

There are many people that take a lot of comfort in being able to eat while they are stressed out or have run into an excessively emotional circumstance or situation in their life. However, the fact of the matter is that this type of behavior can actually be harmful to a person’s overall health and well-being. The emotional eating definition for someone that eats in this manner is as follows:

A person that allows their emotions to dictate how much and when they eat. This is a problem that both men and women can experience. A person that eats during times of stress and high emotions will pick up food in response to the feelings that they are experiencing, instead of eating when their body actually feels hungry.

There are quite a few people that can get away with consuming all sorts of food products when they experience stressful situations without noticing any harmful changes in their body. However, there are just as many or more people that over time will begin to find themselves actually living the emotional eating definition of a person that experiences several different damaging effects. This is a problem that can affect a person’s well-being and it can have a huge negative impact on the overall condition of their health. Some of the most common harmful problems a person may experience physically and emotionally include the following:

* Overeating from stressful situations can result in obesity and problems with being overweight

* When emotional eating leads to excessive weight, it can then cause a wide myriad of different health problems, including high blood pressure and many others

* Low feelings of self-worth

* Symptoms that are associated with depression

* The loss of desire to engage in activities and excursions with friends and family that used to provide a lot of excitement and fun

To many people it may seem harmless to eat during times of a person’s life that cause an excessive amount of stress. The exact opposite is true however, as there are numerous problems both emotionally and physically that this behavior can and often does lead to. This is when the typical emotional eating definition starts to turn into several different other problems that will affect the person’s entire life.

When a person finally realizes that they truly do have a serious problem with consuming an excessive amount of food while their emotions are running high or they face stress, there are several tips that can decrease this behavior. While the actual emotional eating definition involves a person that allows their emotions to trigger their eating, replacing this response can lead to a much healthier life. Below are just a few of the best and most effective steps to replace the old behaviors with ideas that are much healthier.

* Instantly begin cleansing breath exercises when stress is noticed

* Replace junk food in the home with healthy snacks like carrot sticks

* Make sure to drink a healthy amount of water every single day

* Grab a book, word puzzle, or other activity to keep the mind and hands busy when stressful situations occur unexpectedly

For those who are having problems due to emotional eating, stress management tactics may be able to help. Often people have turned to food as a coping mechanism because they were never taught any other way to deal with stress in their lives. This is something that can quite often be traced back to childhood.

How many of us grew up with a mother, aunt or grandmother that thought food was the panacea to all our ills? They’d give us a cookie to take our minds of falling and skinning our knee or offer us a bowl of ice cream after we broke up with our boyfriend. Besides offering food when we were hurt or upset, they also would go the other direction and not eating food became a guilt-inducing thing. If you didn’t clear your plate, were you ever told that your parents worked hard to put that food on the table or better yet, that there were starving children in Africa who would appreciate that food?

No wonder there are so many people suffering with eating disorders such as compulsive eating, anorexia and bulimia! We were conditioned to associate food with our emotions. For most people, other stress coping mechanisms are learned and they never have an issue with food. For some, however, eating becomes their solution to handling any type of stress.

In overcoming serious emotional eating, stress management tactics can be taught that can replace food as a coping mechanism. There are many different stress management tactics that can work to help a person cope with stress and anxiety. Once a person learns these, it’s a matter of changing your habits from turning to food when upset or anxious to using a different stress reliever.

The first step will be to identify what triggers your emotional eating. Stress management really can’t be implemented until you know these triggers. Some of these triggers will be easy to identify but others could take longer as they are so deeply ingrained that you don’t even realize what’s going on. Until you’ve figured out what those “hidden” triggers are, you won’t be able to eliminate them.

Once you’ve discovered the causes of emotional eating, stress management tactics will be used instead of eating. This could be something like taking a walk before going to the refrigerator when the urge to eat hits you and it’s not because you’re hungry. Another might be to write your feelings out in a journal rather than reaching for that bag of potato chips.
