Former smokers just as likely to relapse if they used nicotine replacement therapies to help them quit.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Nicotine patches are no  better than willpower at  helping smokers to quit, research shows. Earlier clinical trials had suggested nicotine replacement therapy could double a smoker’s chances of giving up the habit. But a new study of 800 patients found patches made no difference to long-term quitting rates.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Researchers said the earlier trials had failed to replicate ‘real-life’ situations. They said success and relapse rates were similar whatever method smokers adopted.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The NHS spends an estimated £84million a year on stop smoking   programmes. A week’s supply of patches, which can be obtained on prescription, cost £10 to £14.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The latest study – by the Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Massachusetts, Boston – investigated patients who gave up smoking between 2001 and 2006. It concluded: ‘The main finding is that persons who quit relapsed at equivalent rates, whether or not they used nicotine replacement therapy to help them in their quit attempts, in clear distinction to the results of randomised clinical trials.’&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The results were the same for heavy and lighter smokers and whether counselling was or was not given.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Harvard’s Hillel Alpert said: ‘This study shows that using NRT is no more effective in helping people stop smoking cigarettes in the long term than trying to quit on one’s own.’&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;The cost of quitting: People can spend up to £14 a week on patches.  In an online report in the journal Tobacco Control, fellow author Lois Biener said the funding for NRT might be better spent on other interventions. But Ardi's father, who is about to be named Person of the Century by the tobacco companies, doesn't know what the big deal is, "He looks pretty healthy to me. I don't see the problem." A study funded by the Medical Research Council, led by Muy-Teck Teh, of Queen Mary, University of London, has found that the effects of a genetic mutation that is common in mouth cancer can be worsened by nicotine in the levels that are typically found in smoking cessation products. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The results raise the prospect that nicotine, the addictive chemical in tobacco, may be more carcinogenic than had previously been appreciated. &lt;em&gt;“Although we acknowledge the importance of encouraging people to quit smoking, our research suggests nicotine found in lozenges and chewing gums may increase the risk of mouth cancer,” &lt;/em&gt;Dr Teh said. &lt;em&gt;“Smoking is of course far more dangerous, and people who are using nicotine replacement to give up should continue to use it and consult their GPs if they are concerned. The important message is not to overuse it, and to follow advice on the packet.” &lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most nicotine replacement products have labels advising people to cut down after three months of use and to stop completely after six months. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mouth cancer affects nearly 5,000 people each year in Britain and is usually linked to smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking alcohol. It is often diagnosed at a late stage, and consequently has a poor prognosis. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although nicotine is acknowledged as the addictive element in cigarettes its role in cancer has long been disputed. It is not as potent a carcinogen as other chemicals found in tobacco smoke, such as tar, but some previous research has suggested that it may also contribute to the formation of tumours. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nonetheless, it is much less dangerous than cigarettes and is therefore used in a wide variety of smoking cessation products that allow addicts to satisfy a craving for the chemical without smoking. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the new research, published in the journal Public Library of Science One, Dr Teh’s team has investigated the role of a gene called FOXM1 in mouth cancer. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A mutation that raises the activity of this gene is commonly found in many tumours, and is also present in pre-cancerous cells in the mouth, the scientists found. This raised expression can then be worsened by exposure to nicotine. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;According to Dr Teh, &lt;em&gt;“If you already have a mouth lesion that is expressing high levels of FOXM1 and you expose it to nicotine, it may add to the risk of converting it into cancer.  Neither the raised FOXM1 nor nicotine is alone sufficient to trigger cancer, but together they may have an effect.  The concern is that with smokers, you are looking at people who are already at risk of oral cancer. On 1st January 2007, smoking was prohibited in restaurants, although a seperate room can be set aside for smokers providing no food is served in it. Bars larger than 50m2 must provide seperate smoking and smoke-free areas and smoking is still permitted in bars smaller than 50m2. Penalities range from EUR 150 to EUR 1650.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Smoking on public transport vehicles (trams, buses, underground trains) has been prohibited since 1976 and in 2004, the national train company prohibited smoking on all domestic trains.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Prior to the 2005 Royal Decree smoking in cafes, hotels and restaurants was regulated by the Royal Decree of May 15, 1990 (Ministerial Decree of January 2, 1991 and Royal Decree of February 9, 1991) and stipulates that cafes and restaurants that are greater than 50m2 should provide 50% non-smoking areas, which are clearly indicated as such. All cafés and restaurants are also required to have a smoke extraction or air ventilation system. Under the same Royal Decree, smoking in enclosed public places is not permitted, although enclosed premises where foods and/or drinks are offered for consumption are exempt from legislation. Smoking is not permitted in areas that form part of premises where sick or elderly people are cared for; health services are provided; children are admitted; education is provided; shows are performed; exhibits are organized; or sports are practised. This Royal Decree was badly enforced. In 2004, for example, 43% of bars and restaurants did not comply with the legislation. A Royal Decree of February 7, 1997 forbid smoking in places where food products are produced, stored or sold.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From 1st April 2005, Belgian businesses were given the right to require their employees to work longer if they stop for smoking breaks during the working day. Oftentimes we would look to our cigarette breaks as a chance to get away from the stresses of work or just to have a quiet moment to ourselves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just because you have given up cigarettes doesn't mean that you can't enjoy breaks. But now, instead of lighting up, substitute new, healthier alternatives that will give you a similar sense of calm and relaxation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some of my favorites:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Meditate&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Meditation can be a wonderful way to gain control of your mind, especially when it's racing with thoughts of how much you miss smoking and cigarettes. It's incredibly easy to do and can be done anywhere, without any equipment except your own body&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Simply sit on the floor in any comfortable position (such as cross-legged). Close your eyes. Attune your ears to the sounds around you, whether it's the noise of the street or the voices of your office colleagues. Now shift focus so that you are listening to the sounds of your breath and your own body. At the same time, concentrate on a mental image that gives you a sense of peace, such as a candle flame, a tree, or cloud. Try to keep your focus centered for at least 10 minutes at a time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Listen to Music&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Music is such an amazing distraction. It's so easy to get lost in a familiar melody, or to be transported by a new song that really speaks to you in some way. In fact, music has an effect on the brain that may be similar to chemical substances but it's all totally natural, of course!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A great tip is to substitute daily music breaks for what used to be your daily smoking breaks. Instead of going outside to puff away, put on a soothing CD or turn the radio on a channel you love. You can use your i-Pod if you are at work, or play it out loud if you are at home. The distraction will keep your mind off cigarettes, and the music will give your body its much-needed dose of relaxation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Go for a Walk&lt;/strong&gt;Don' just sit in your office or your living room thinking about how much you wish you had a cigarette right now. Instead, get up and put your body in motion. The physical stimulation will start endorphins coursing through your body. If you can take a stroll outside, do so and pay attention to the sounds of the birds, cars passing by, the color of the flowers in bloom, and so on. The point of this exercise is to get yourself out of your mind and focusing on external things in order to beat the urge to smoke.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Develop New Interests&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try developing new interests or hobbies like gardening or painting. Such things would keep your mind off that urge to smoke. All of us have a certain measure of creativity that often remains untapped. It would be a wonderful thing if you could try working on that creativity. Join a dance class or a drama class. Or you could try learning a new skill like pottery or clay modeling. Try to involve yourself with other people. Do same social work, or try helping out at the local volunteer organizations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Change your lifestyle by changing your routine. Go swimming, try working out or going to the gym. Be active. Got something you wanted to do but never had the time to do it? NOW is the time. I encourage you to use your day as a new beginning, a fresh start to a life without cigarettes.
