Why Should I Stop Smoking Now?

There is no time better than the present to stop smoking, and the reasons are numerous. The health of oneself and one’s family is most important, but so many benefits to being smoke free can be explored. Health benefits begin within hours of one’s last cigarette. Being smoke free means lower blood pressure and better oxygenation of the body’s organs.

Physical fitness will be easier to attain, adding to the positive effect on health. Almost every organ in the body will benefit from lack of nicotine. Heart and lung disease risk will diminish greatly. Cancer risk, which is increased throughout a smoker’s body, also diminishes notably when the habit is kicked. Another benefit to being a nonsmoker is the condition of oneself and one’s home.

A nonsmoker has much cleaner hair, clothes and teeth. The home of a nonsmoker smells infinitely better than that of a home that is smoked in daily. The car of a smoker typically smells unpleasant at all times. A home or car is much more difficult to sell if it has been subjected to cigarette smoke. Often, a home will sell for less than if it is in the same condition otherwise, but has not been exposed to smoke. Most visitors to a smoker’s home, and passengers in his car, notice the smell immediately, and form negative impressions of their visit.

Many people cannot stand to smell the breath of a person who has just finished a cigarette. Smoking harms the people in vicinity of the smoke area. Children living in homes where a smoker also lives have higher incidences of illnesses, asthma and earaches. Everyone in the house, especially the smoker, may catch colds more frequently, and require longer periods of time to recover from them.

It is possible even pets’ health may be adversely affected by cigarette smoke. Smoking is very costly in terms of money as well as health. Each pack of cigarettes takes an economic toll on the smoker and the smoker’s dependents. Thousands of dollars a year could be lost to the purchase of cigarettes and cigars, money that could go to an infinite number of other places, almost all of which would be much more enjoyable than the cigarettes.

Again, now is the best time to quit smoking for so many reasons. One’s health is probably one’s most important asset, and the biggest key to comfort and happiness, and cigarettes do more to compromise that health than anything else. Even a smoker’s loved ones’ health is at risk from the cigarettes. The family’s monetary worth is also greatly diminished by smoking, with debts possibly accumulating, and sacrifices made, while thousands of dollars are being spent on cigarettes. With the look and smell of the smoker’s clothes, home and the smoker himself, what better incentives are there to kick the habit?

Deep chesty inhalation of nicotine filled cigarette smoke results in quick absorption of the poisonous nicotine into the lungs—the nicotine then diffuses itself into the blood as rapidly as the beneficially inhaled oxygen. From the lungs the nicotine reaches the brain in less than 10 seconds.

Nicotine is known to stimulates the adrenal glands and in doing so prompts the release of epinephrine plus nor epinephrine, which are considered somewhat responsible for increasing heart rate and the blood pressure in the smoker. It is estimated that approximately one-third of all cancer deaths worldwide occur due to tobacco.

Active smoking and exposure to environmental tobacco smoke are believed to account for 90 percent of all cases of lung cancer. Smokers suffer from many respiratory diseases other than lung cancer. Smoking has long been recognized as a major risk factor in cardiovascular disease.
Children bodies are especially susceptible, when breathed in, to the effects of any close environmental cigarette smoke. When raised in a household in which they are regularly exposed to environmental tobacco smoke, children are especially likely to suffer from asthma and chronic cough, and they may suffer from reduced lung growth and function.

It has been stated that females who smoke are more likely to experience the effects of infertility, miscarriage or worse. Whenever a mother to be smokes, some toxins vis the lungs enter into the pregnant woman’s bloodstream and poisons from the smoke can easily be passed directly to the fetus. Once the infant has absorbed these toxins into their body they can negatively affect an infant’s lung development and lung function as they grow.

Babies of women who smoke are more likely to be born prematurely, to have a low birth weight, and to have slower initial growth. Hence if you quit smoking now, it can help you live longer and be healthier. It lowers the risk of lung cancer, other cancers, heart attack, stroke, and chronic lung disease and you can enjoy a higher quality of life.

Now is a very present term. It identifies that this second, if to become a moment, is a imperative. Imperatives never achieve as seconds become moments as hours become days and life is long. The now of this question presumes a necessity. Why stop smoking? This is an imperative as noted by the American Heart Association and the American Cancer society. An imperative vast for an individual said to have a nicotine addiction.

What is a heart but the beat of life. A lung but a breath of fresh air. And the “now” both organizations suggest will see us healthier and stronger, living longer. There once was a man very happy with the now of life. This time, this moment. A millisecond. Joy too has the imperative of now.

Obviously I am not totally believing of the American Medical Community in it’s condemnation of smoking or chewing tobacco products. And not so sure this “now” prolonged by giving up a pleasurable activity is worth the gamble of a future prolonged with even one less joy. Is joy a worthwhile life activity. I reflect that in the 1950′s American’s were besieged by a stop smoking campaign that used the then new television networks to extend it’s impact on America, Americans, and our lifestyles. Somehow was born the “public announcement’, media blitz for a “cause”.

Unfortunately the media bowed out of a controversy so expensive and far reaching in terms of harm, deaths, miscarriage, and birth defects. To this day most American’s do not know that the rise in lung cancer, and the resultant deaths, and the other health concerns mentioned were most likely caused by asbestos. A fine dust that when breathed in destroys throat and lung tissue. A fine dust that can genetically change an individuals DNA markers to be passed to their children.

A fine dust that infiltrates tissue, even that of the womb bearing a yet unborn child. The “now” imperative for me is not to expect my life to be shorted or lengthened by smoking or not smoking. The “now” imperative for me is to understand that “public service” announcements, health associations, the media, health providers, ad agencies, and even state governments have long enjoyed the profit of a lie so long told that it has become a truth.

The “now” for me is not an imperative of quitting smoking but of seeing quit in this America the need to punish those different. The “now” an imperative to see the food, drug, and health standards deregulated in the First Bush Dynasty, Presidency, reinstated in full force. The “now”is an imperative. For this now, this second, this minute, the deregulation of food, drug and health standards has seen the return of the drug “Valium” to prescription of Primary Care Physician.

Find out more at the Health Directory. Valium, a prescription drug, a tranquilizer, was pulled from the market as regular, even short term use can result in an addiction said that one can never overcome. The regular use of Valium causes fatal heart attacks in women. And permanent importance in men. The “now” an imperative for American’s to wake up from the tobacco wars and get back to the business of recognizing the “focus” the TV demands from us has blinded us to a reality. Smoking is not a grave danger, and the grave dangers need to be off the market now.

It was another cold mid winters day in Henderson. I was at work all day coughing up my lungs like there was no tomorrow and my chest felt like someone had kicked it in. I felt real sorry for myself and decided that once I got home I would have an early bed straight after dinner. Nothing is ever as we plan it it seems or at least not as easy.

On my arrival home I find my wife looking quite worse for wear and who was about to go to bed with a severe cold and was only waiting for me to get home. Well I got my instructions, as I seemed the better of us two, and with four children to feed, bath and entertain I was not about to get my own wish fulfilled. Are the children playing up worse than normally, I was not sure but nothing seemed to go right that night.

After dinner I went and sat in the lounge and lit up a smoke, the last one for the day, the last of my twenty five pack I had bought that morning which was now empty. I felt the smoke tear down my throat and questioned my actions. “Oh well,” I thought. This flu must be making me feel so bad, it could not be the smoking. I was so sure about that.

As the night went by I was getting worse. I was finding it hard to breath, my lungs hurt and I was coughing up what seemed like gallons of phlegm. I prayed for the flu to end which eventually it did, until the next winter and so on for years.

This was a common occurrence for me and my wife during the many winters we experienced but not now, not anymore. This is my first smoke free year in the past thirty years and I am loving winter. I can breath, my lungs feel great and I do not have any form of phlegm build up, ever!

I do not even feel like having a smoke, honestly I am truly finished smoking forever. My only regret is the thousands of dollars I wasted on cigarettes over the years before I smartened up and quit. How did I eventually manage to quit? To stop smoking the easy way was, and is, a whole other story.

Actually it is what I was given when I was smoking more than a pack a day and had been for more than 30 years. fact! I took a shot at my own method and being rather skeptical myself I knew I would just start again but thought after a heart attack leaving me with severe heart damage I had better try stop smoking for my children’s sake at least.

I am happy to say I have been smoke free for over a year now and surprise, surprise so is my wife who had smoked from when she was only fourteen years of age! Neither of us have reverted back to smoking and we are both sure that if we did for whatever reason we would be able to easily quit smoking again.
