Editorial: State Police Radar traps

A radar trap might be the best solution if speeding was the major traffic problem in Maryland. Speeding is not. Aggressive driving and willful dangerous driving conduct is the issue.

The Maryland State Police are off the mark. Maybe it is just me, but I see the MSP taking the easy road to traffic enforcement. Piece of cake to have two or more officers run radar and flag down motorists traveling in excess of the posted limit. This, however, is not what I call real police work.

While two or three officers are flagging down motorists on a side road our highways are still full of dangerous aggressive drivers doing a lot more serious things than speeding. Speed traps are a waste of tax payer dollars and do nothing to get these officers the experience they need to recognize and enforce laws against aggressive driving.

I don’t want to believe all these traps are just a revenue opportunity or that officers are making up for what they have not been able to accomplish the rest of the month. That would be cynical.

You cannot convince me that nabbing an average joe for a lesser offense is going to make an impact on a problem that has been the 800 pound gorilla in the room for years!

Today in Calvert County you are going to experience the radar trap. Officers are going to place you and themselves in danger at these locations. There will be no emergency lights to alert traffic to a police action. Officers are going to be jumping into traffic to flag you down, praying that you see them.

The sad thing is these radar traps are never going to catch the aggressive tailgaters, the aggressive lane changers, the people that ignore pedestrians on our streets. None of those behaviors are at issue.

What you will see at the end of a shift are those same officers speeding off home proudly waving their FPD and FP plates that protect them from enforcement action. When was the last time you saw a person driving a car with those tags stopping at a red light or stop sign or driving the speed limit?

MSP managers your heads are in the sand. You are making revenue to justify your existence and your stats seem to look good but you are not making a difference.

Southern Maryland give these young officers nothing to do this evening. Obey the traffic laws and give the MSP something to think about when they go home with empty pockets.

Deadly weekend on area roadways | Washington Examiner

At least five people were killed in D.C.-area crashes this weekend, an unusually high death toll on the region’s roadways.

Pedestrians were killed in three of the crashes; the other deaths were due to one-car accidents. Three crashes happened in Montgomery County, one in Fairfax County and one in Prince George’s County.
