In 2006 Michael Gellatly was commissioned by Random House to create a series of fully embellished map illustrations for George R.R. Martin's long anticipated book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, The World of Ice and Fire - the never-before-seen history of Westeros and the Lands Beyond. With the book scheduled for release today, we are able to share with you these maps of mythical places. Says Gellatly, "It was quite the adventure!" Michael talks more about the project, and how he came to work with George R. R. Martin in this interview with AltPick. And after the jump, we'll learn a little more about Michael's process in the creation of these maps, and look at some example of the early concepts alongside the fully realized final versions.

Although Gellatly's maps carry the feeling of a hand drawn, painted document, there exists no original. Elements of the maps are drawn freehand or painted and scanned into Photoshop where Gellatly is able to manipulate the images to create these new worlds. Everything is hand crafted - stained paper, drawings, watercolor, tinting, icons, and legends are all built separately. The maps are a multimedia collage of Gellatly's own work, realized in Photoshop. My love for photography began when I was 11 years old with a Sports Illustrated subscription that included a free camera. Changing the plastic cameras f-stop’s from cloudy to partly cloudy, and even to the sunny setting was all the sophistication I needed to test it out the first time photographing Shamu on our family vacation. From there, as they say, the rest is history. Having participated in sports and outdoor adventure throughout my life I naturally gravitated towards sports lifestyle imagery. It has always provided me with opportunities to challenge myself in new ways, creatively and technically.

Whether I'm photographing an NBA superstar with a five minute time limit or snowboarders soaring through the air, each day as a photographer is exhilarating and satisfying.
