Economic and social causes of the emigration in Lombardy. The case of Mandamento of Cuggiono

This paper analyses the economic and social causes of the significant phenomenon of emigration which affected the Mandamento di Cuggiono between the 1880s and the 1920s. The paper demonstrates that the mass-emigration which occurred in this area of the Milanese did not represent a new phenomenon, but constituted a prosecution, on a larger scale, of previous migrant traditions, which had for decades represented a structural feature of the local economy. Therefore, the paper aims to contribute to the historiography on Italian emigration, which has for long neglected the northern regions of the country and particularly Lombardy.

This article focusses on Emanuele Farina, an antifascist intellectual. He was part of the political area looking for autonomy from the egemony of the Communist Party. This area disappeared in the post war period due to the political polarization during the Cold War: therefore many important personalities were forgotten. Farina was a socialist, a liberal and an anarchist, he took part in the Spanish Civil War with the Republican Army; he was a journalist, too, a translator and he was interested in science and tecnology.

The Rebirth of the Partisan Movement in Lower Valtellina

After the great round-up of the end of November 1944, the partisan movement in lower Valtellina was eventually re-born according to two distinct political inspirations. The division Garibaldi, located between the Lake Como and Morbegno, aimed at a political and social renovation of Italy, whereas the brigade Rinaldi, which belonged to the Garibaldi movement too and was situated between Ardenno and Sondrio, strove for the mere liberation of the Country from the Nazis and Fascists. Accordingly, the two commands settled the problem of the constitution of a unified command with the partisan forces of higher Valtellina and that of the relations with the population in two different ways.
