4chan Versus Twitter Round One

Internet pranksters gathered around the popular anonymous internet forum 4chan have seemingly orchestrated an attack on Twitter creating a number of fake accounts and pushing the hashtag #gorillapenis to the trending topics. The attack now seems to be under control as that particular hashtag is no longer visible in Twitter trends but coupled with the recent problem with suspension of several real accounts &#8211 which might have been partly due to the 4chan attack &#8211 it once again shows that Twitter is going to have a hard time controlling spammers pranksters and hackers whose number will inevitably increase with the rise of Twitter&#8217s popularity. On a side note Cnet&#8217s blogger Harrison Hoffman has linked to the Insurgency Wiki which is an &#8220offense&#8221 in the eyes of the 4chan crowd and therefore the page that previously explained the details about the attack on Twitter is now making fun of him. It&#8217s an interesting tactic by stifling attempts to link to the site it reduces its relevance in Google&#8217s index therefore making the site harder to find. The instructions for the attack dubbed &#8220Operation Shitter&#8221 were as following 1. Create Twitter accounts2. Post messaged including the #gorillapenis hashtag3. Make #gorillapenis a Trending Topic on Twitter4. ????5. PROFITIt&#8217s a problem for Twitter. It&#8217s not that hard to defend against attacks aimed at gaming trending topics. After all there are only a couple of them at any given time and when the Twitter admins see a topic that&#8217s obviously spammy or fake they can just remove it manually. But stifling the creation of fake accounts is harder. If the trending topics and account creation turn into a never-ending rat race between spammers and Twitter admins who have to constantly remove them there will always be some degree of spam permeating Twitter hopefully it&#8217ll never get so high to render Twitter unusable.
Googles New Layout Love it or Hate It?

Readers may have noticed that Google changed the way it displays search results this week the Google logo is smaller results are indented and spacing has been added above the search box. Google also removed the page size indicator which gives you a hint of how long the page might take to load.Reader Marek Foss sent us screenshots comparing the old and the new layout below which he feels looks more like Google AdSense than a page of Google search results. And yet we know that such changes can have a significant effect of Google&#8217s revenue and page load times &#8211 removal of features eg. page size indicator gains a fractional boost in load times for instance. We also know that Google is meticulous in optimizing pages and that asking the user what they want as we do here might not result in the correct answer as a CNET article last year explained For example Mayer said the company wanted to find out how many search results to show users&#8211the customary 10 or 20 25 or 30? When asked directly users said they&#8217d like more results on a page but testing showed otherwise.Specifically Google found that when the results increased to 30 per page people searched 20 percent less overall Mayer said. After much analysis of server logs the company found it was because it took about twice as long to display the longer results list for the user and speed matters.Google&#8217s latest layout change then isn&#8217t likely to be for aesthetic purposes it&#8217s for speed and revenue. The question is do you like Mark find it less aesthetically appealing? Are you a fan of the new Google layout?trendsReviews Google

Microsoft Chokes On Its Own Ad Quickly Pulls Vom.com Spot

While the Jerry Seinfeld ads represented the nadir of Microsoft&#8217s attempts to create a popular ad campaign the software company seemed to hit its stride recently with the general positive notices for its I&#8217m A PC spots. But now the latest in a series of ads promoting Microsoft&#8217s Internet Explorer 8 browser is so bad that it&#8217s making some viewers want to puke&#8212literally. The ad features a typical suburban couple at the breakfast table and includes a laptop. See the full ad after the jump. Microsoft NSDQ MSFT told CNET that ad was intended to humorously highlight IE8&#8217s InPrivate Browsing feature. But as complaints rose Microsoft and its agency Bradley and Montgomery decided to remove the ad from their respective sites. The spot is still on YouTube for the time being.

The RIAA has won a nearly two-year-old copyright infringement suit against news-sharing and communication network Usenet.com the verdict comes on the heels of a similar win against file-sharer Jammie Thomas to the tune of $1.92 million. In 2007 the RIAA accused Usenet a precursor to social networks like Facebook and MySpace of using pirated music to entice its users to pay monthly fees CNET reports that U.S. District Judge Harold Baer found the company guilty of &#8220direct contributory and vicarious infringement.&#8221

Jammie Thomas To Appeal Her $1.92 Million RIAA Verdict

Jammie Thomas-Rasset the woman who was charged with copyright infringement through online file sharing tried to fight and subsequently lost will appeal the verdict in her case which ordered her to pay $1.92 million in damages to the recording industry that sued her. As we&#8217ve noted her case was always on shaky legs and it was probably taken into account by the jury which set a very harsh penalty. However it&#8217s questionable whether the verdict is constitutional and Jammie Thomas-Rasset will appeal on that grounds.&#8220She&#8217s not interested in settling. She wants to take the issue up on appeal on the constitutionality of the damages. That&#8217s one of the main arguments&#8211that the damages are disproportionate to any actual harm&#8221 her attorney Joe Sibley told CNET.And disproportionate they are. 80000 dollars for sharing a song &#8211 one song &#8211 on an online network? However you look at it it&#8217s an arbitrary number. If you tried to apply the same standards in other cases you&#8217d get ridiculous results. Together with the fact that Thomas-Rasset doesn&#8217t have that kind of money trying to appeal the verdict is a logical choice. No one can tell whether she will succeed or not but in a case as important as this one it&#8217s good that she&#8217s putting up a fight. Awarding such huge damages for online file sharing is a dangerous legal precedent that might result in further pressure on ISPs and governments to implement draconian measures to stop it as well as give them more rights to monitor online activities not only of file sharers but all of us.
gdgt Engadget Founders Launch The Worlds Greatest Gadget Database

Ryan Block and Pete Rojas creators of the leading gadget blog Engadget flicked the switch moments ago on their new gadget community gdgt. What is gdgt exactly? It&#8217s a new gadget-focused community and content site with reviews and user-powered forums. Most of all it&#8217s a database of new shiny things. As Block explains in the launch blog post We both love devices and spend an insane amount of time playing with them writing about them talking about them and thinking about them. We&#8217ve waited for years for somebody to make a gadget site we could go hang out at all day &#8212 when no one did it we just decided to do it ourselves and make sure that it went beyond everything else out there. The actual genesis of gdgt sprung from an idea Peter had for a site where people could create and share lists of products they had and wanted and an idea Ryan had for how to build the world&#8217s greatest gadget database. On their own both ideas were alright but when we combined them we wound up with something way greater than the sum of its parts. After our work at Engadget and Gizmodo we knew gdgt had to be different from the rest of the technology sites out there yet make total sense as soon as you saw it.While the core concepts that drive the site &#8212 gadgets and community &#8212 will always stay the same what we&#8217re most excited about is the fact that we can use gdgt as the foundation for building tons of new features and tools for the gadget world. Stuff like the gadget finder &#8212 which lets you search for devices based on specs finally! &#8212 is only the start. We&#8217re already working like crazy thinking up lots of new stuff to introduce over the coming months. And since we&#8217re building this site for you it goes without saying that the gdgt community has a direct say in what we&#8217re working on. Hit us up in gdgt feedback to tell us what you want from gdgt or just what&#8217s on your mind.We really appreciate how patient and supportive everyone has been while we&#8217ve labored to get gdgt out the door. We&#8217re extremely excited about what we&#8217ve built and even if it still has some bugs here and there hey you&#8217re probably an early adopter you can handle it! we hope you think it was worth the wait. So go and create a profile start building your gadget list and check out all of the cool features the site has to offer. In the mean time you know where to find us we&#8217ll be right here working to make gdgt the place to call home for you and your gadgets. The keyword here is not community however it&#8217s the database component that&#8217s key to gdgt. If successful gdgt could be a far more structured reference point in the world of gadgets than say blogs like Engadget and Gizmodo. It could provide access to data on thousands of gadgets plus consumer reviews. In short a better CNET. It&#8217s a powerful idea and if anyone has the ability to make it work these guys can.Video What is gdgt?Tags engadget gdgt
