Calculator is Amazon's Free App of the Day

Calculator was featured this earlier this week on Amazon's App Store as the Free App of the Day. What an awesome opportunity! Thanks to everyone for downloading it - I hope that you enjoy using it!

I just received back a report from them and all-in-all Calculator had 192,785 total downloads that day! What an awesome honor.

I just wanted to take a moment to let everyone know how valuable it was for me to get all of your feedback throughout the course of the day and that I will be trying my hardest to implement all the feature requests you have. There is a lot to do, but I believe many of you commented because you truly would like to see this be the best app it can be. I plan on making it so.

It always amazes me how much one learns when working on something. Things that aren't directly related to the task at hand but you learn as you go along the way.

Case in point: Calculator.

I originally made Calculator because I wanted a decent Calculator on Android that looked as good as it performed. I wanted it to be simple and yet accurate. I wanted the ability to change the look of it on the fly. I wanted alot of things and I think I have in large achieved all of them.

But things just don't appear when you program - you have to create them. So many things you take for granted
on your average calculator (like error checking, input checking, overflow, rounding) aren't just an automatic thing. You have to fully understand every function that you put on the calculator: how it works, what inputs are valid for it, what causes it to error, what causes it to go to infinity, where it is undefined etc. Today, for example, I spent a good amount of time on Wikipedia learning about the trig functions and hyperbolic functions and where they are defined/undefined, how radians and decimals are related and so forth. The list goes on and on. And even when you think you have compensated for everything, someone will report a new bug for you to try and fix. Just the other day a person emailed me a bug about how the Calculator rounds off on certain things. I always appreciate the feedback from all of you and I really do enjoy the challenge, but man sometimes I think "All I wanted was a Calculator! How can things be so complicated!?"

But things are always more complicated than they first seem.

Anyways just a funny observation. All I have to say is I know way more about mathematics as a result of this that I never really intended to learn. Such is life....

Has anyone else been experiencing this recently?

Oh and I have been hard at work updating Calculator. Still don't have any concrete release date, but it's coming =)

Ok this has been a long time since I have been around. Too many side project, never enough time. Yadda yadda.... you know how it is. Anyways, I finally have some time again to start devoting to Android again and I am excited. Like coming back to an old friend who welcomes you back with open arms. =)

I was initially sort of hesitant about getting back into coding again because I haven't done anything in Java in a solid couple months (PHP is my other main language I like to write in). It was one of those things where I kept looking at my old code and I was like "I know I wrote this for the life of me I can't remember writing any of this." Nevertheless, I spent a couple hours jumping back in to it tonight and man it feels good!

I have a couple things I would love to accomplish in the following weeks. One, Calculator is due for a good number of updates including a major rewrite that I have been working on for some time. Plus I hope to start working on some new Android project. Not sure what yet but I hope I can come up with something sweet.

Here's to a fresh start! And off we go!

I know it has been quite a while since I posted last. Life has been quite busy for me the last few weeks (moving, new job etc.). However I am getting close to being settled back in and possibly looking into starting a new project.

Hi everyone,

Just thought I would let you guys know about what has been going on at Stormin Dorman Productions. I know that I have been a little quiet lately with updates and such and thought I would bring you up to speed.

Head past the break to see what has been going on.

First off, I have been busy with other projects so I haven't had as much time to devote to app work. I should be finished with that in the next few weeks.

Second, I am working on a rather major update for Calculator. Several people have been requesting some additional features that I would love to add but at this point it is becoming difficult to add with the current state of the code. I am basically rewriting everything from the ground up. Doing so will allow me to support things like parenthesis, correct order of operations (PEMDAS), better layouts, more functions etc. etc. you get the picture. Basically it will make Calculator even more amazing than ever before.

I am not sure how long this will take me but I just wanted to let you know that it is coming and that it will be sweet. I am very excited to see how this will all turn out. Let me know if there are any features you are dying to see in this rewrite.

Calculator 3.2.1 - Couple small changes plus a new function to work with!

Hey all,

Just got a new update up for your favorite Calculator on the Market!

This update brings a couple small changes as well as a nifty new function to the table!

Calculator 3.2.1 is a minor update and adds the following features:

First off I removed the permission for internet access. I had no intention of this being shady- I thought I needed it in the app but I don't. So away it goes!
UI updates in the menus
The new function-------- nCr!! You can now do combinations within Calculator 3.2.1. Just put the Calculator in landscape mode and hit the 'Alt' button to reveal the new function. Enjoy!

I'm quite busy at the moment but I will still try to devote as much time to updating Calculator with new features as I can.

Calculator 3.0 Is Finally Complete!

Hello all!!

I'm very excited to finally announce that Calculator has finally hit 3.0 status. I'm very excited to finally release this and am sorry it took so long but I think the wait has been worth it.

Calculator 3.0 brings:

Skins! You can now choose the look and feel of the Calculator on the fly. Choose from "iCalc", "Greyscale", "Milky Way" and "HTC". You may also set skins and layouts independently of each other
Added the ability to force the screen to stay on while you are in the app.
Fixed a quirk where certain operations would cause the answer to display weird (ie. 15/1.5 = 10 now instead of 1E+1). Thanks to those who alerted me to this.
Internal improvements and optimizations

Overall I am very pleased with this update. Sorry again for the long time it took to get this out. If any of you have suggestions for skins I would love to hear it!

I just wanted to give you a quick update since there haven't been any updates in a few weeks.

Calculator 3.0 is in the works and I'm really excited about it. I don' t know when it will be done but I think it will be pretty sweet. My life has been super busy over the last couple weeks so I haven't had much time to devote to it.

Rest assured it will come. I will try to put in as many of your suggestions that I can. Be patient with me.

Calculator 2.3.2 already?

Can a guy do 3 updates in a day? Well I guess so. Sorry about that folks but I was just alerted as to how huge my app size had needlessly gotten (800k for a calculator?).

I have since redone some of the code and just published the new version to the Market (only 330k).
This update should also improve startup speed of the app.

Calculator 2.3- A few updates here and there...

Hey everyone,

Just pushed out Calculator 2.3 for you in the Market.
This was a smaller update feature-wise but does add a few new things here and there that people have requested that makes it a little more usable.

The 2.3 update includes:

Updates "Simple" layout in landscape so it looks a little cleaner
The "%" key now evaluates the expression when you hit it so you don't have to hit equals right after
When you store a number in memory, you can now start typing the next one you would like to work with immediately instead of hitting clear first

Eg. To add 2 and then 3 into memory you now hit 2 > M+ > 3 > M+
Instead of 2 > M+ > Clear > 3 > M+

Hey everyone you can now download the Calculator 2.2 update in the Market.

This sweet update includes:
-Ability to change layout on the fly. I have included 2 more default layouts (including one with a % key in portrait for you business types). I plan on adding more and if you have any suggestions let me know!
-Adjusted haptic feedback levels

Got a new version of Calculator for you guys to download.
The 2.1 update brings:

Install app to SD card for all you Froyo users
Ability to select haptic feedback level (Off, Light, Medium, Hard)

Hello everyone!!

I am so excited today to release version 2.0 of Calculator on the Android Market!!

This is a major update that I have been working for a long time on and I know many of you have been asking for it.

This update brings a slew of new functions to the calculator including:

Landscape mode (finally)
Scientific Functions
Trig
Roots
Radian and decimal mode
Log (base E, 2 and 10)

I am very excited for this release and hope you enjoy it very much.

As usual with such a big release, one or two bugs can slip by my attention so if you find one please shoot me an email and I will get on fixing it. Please don't rate down for such things, I can fix them if you just tell me.
