When we're mapping out our fields, we try to consider each crop's specific needs - timing of planting, spacing of seeds, ideal temperature for germination, irrigation needs, and on and on. As vegetable gardeners know, planning for a long list of crops can become quite an involved process, made a little easier with the right resources.

Our greenhouse has been bustling with activity lately.  It's the brightest, warmest place to work, so we have several construction projects going on in there right now.  We are building cold frames, work tables, and benches for seedlings, and also putting together a barrel woodstove to heat the greenhouse on cold nights. The sun is out today, and the winter rye we seeded in early November is still trying to grow!  I just walked the perimeter of our fields again, double-checking my measurements. Now that I'm actually sitting down to calculate how many seeds to order, I need to know how much cultivated bed space we'll have available for growing this year's crops. The kitchen smells like basil and woodsmoke, with a hint of oregano.  I just spent the afternoon processing and packaging dried herbs to sell at tomorrow's Winter Farmers' Market.

It's amazing to me how the flavors of summer come rushing back when I open a bag of these herbs. All summer, we cut batches of fresh basil, sage, oregano, and thyme, and hung them to dry in the barn. Our farm was featured in this recent story in The Wire about NH Farm to School:  Making the Connection.   In the fall, we made weekly deliveries to Exeter High School, where food service director Jeanne Pierce is doing great things with local food!  As we make our crop plans for the 2012 growing season, we'll be ordering extra seeds with the schools in mind.

We are packing our truck for the first Winter Farmers' Market of the season. We're loading up squash, potatoes, onions, carrots, turnips, and a bunch of other stuff I've been washing, sorting and packing for the last few days. We are almost ready!

With the help of our neighbor's plow, we turned over a few acres and seeded winter rye.  Most of the land is sloped (some areas more than others), except this nice flat field at the top of the hill, which hadn't been cultivated in a very very long time.

Big news! We are moving the farm to a new location.



  
After
 many years of farming on leased land, we are finally putting down 
permanent roots. In October 2011 we will be moving to a historic 
property in Brentwood 
currently known as Creamery Brook Farm. We are working with the current
