I’m a huge fan of the idea of letsencrypt, which is trying to bring free SSL encryption to the whole of the internet, in particular all the smaller sites who might not have the expertise to roll out SSL or where a cost might be restrictive.

There are a lot of scripts for powering letsencrypt, but getssl looked the best fit for my use case as I just wanted a simple script to generate certificates, not manage apache configs or anything else. It seems to do a pretty good job so far. I swapped over the certificates to the newly generated ones and it seems pretty smooth sailing.

After leaving IBM I’ve joined Pace at their Belfast office. It is quite a change of IT sectors, though still the same sort of job. Software development seems to have a lot in common no matter which industry it is for.

There’s going to be some interesting learning, things like DVB are pretty much completely new to me, but at the same time it’s lots of Java and C++ with similar technology stacks involved. Sadly less perl, but more Python so maybe I’ll learn that properly. I’m likely to work with some more interesting Javascript frameworks, in particular Angular.js which should be fun.

The job is still Software Development, and there should be some fun challenges with things like allowing a TV set top box to do on demand video content when all you have is a one-way data stream from a satellite, for instance, which make for some interesting solutions. I’m working in the Cobalt team which deals with a delivering data from the TV provider onto set top boxes, so things like settings, software updates, programme guides and on demand content and even apps. Other teams in the office work with the actual video content encryption and playback and the UI the set top box shows.

The local office seems to be all running Fedora, so I’m saying goodbye to Ubuntu at work. I already miss it, but hopefully will find Fedora enjoyable in the long term.

The office is on the other side of Belfast so is a marginally longer commute, but it’s still reasonable to get to. Stranmillis seems a nice area of Belfast, and it’s a 10 minute walk to the Botanical gardens so I intend to make some time to see it over lunch, which will be nice as I really miss getting out as I could in Hursley and its surrounding fields.

After nearly 10 years with IBM, I am moving on… Today is my last day with IBM.

I suppose my career with IBM really started as a pre-university placement at IBM, which makes my time in IBM closer to 11 years. I worked with some of the WebSphere technical sales and pre-sales teams in Basingstoke, doing desktop support and Lotus Domino administration and application design, though I don’t like to remind people that I hold qualifications on Domino :p

I then joined as a graduate in 2005, and spent most of my time working on Integration Bus (aka Message Broker, and several more names) and enjoyed working with some great people over the years. The last 8 months or so have been with the QRadar team in Belfast, and I really enjoyed my time working with such a great team.

I have done test roles, development roles, performance work, some time in level 3 support, and enjoyed all of it. Even the late nights the day before release were usually good fun (the huge pizzas helped!).

I got very involved with IBM Hursley’s Blue Fusion events, which were incredible fun and a rather unique opportunity to interact with secondary school children.

Creating an Ubuntu-based linux desktop for IBM, with over 6500 installs, has been very rewarding and something I will remember fondly.

I’ve enjoyed my time in IBM and made some great friends. Thanks to everyone that helped make my time so much fun.

When we moved into our new house last year we found a rather large corner cupboard in the kitchen which was rather difficult to see into because it was so dark. The cupboard was a great size for storing food, and would give plenty of space, however we simply had trouble finding anything in it as all the light was blocked by standing in front of it.

A quick look on online and I decided that some strip LED lights and a 12V PSU should do something to change the situation. You can pick up either for a few quid from banggood.

White 12V self-adhesive LED strip

12V LED Power supply

Of course I didn’t want to be turning lights on and off by hand, as knowing me I’ll just forget to turn them off, so a spare micro switch on the 12V side seemed the appropriate option

Micro switch to turn off lights when cupboard is closed

I think the final result is pretty good, though it does bug me that theres a dead set of LEDs on the top shelf – didn’t notice that before putting them in…

The finished result

One piece of advice I do have is that it is worth buying the little self-adhesive cable tidy anchors for this sort of thing. While the LED strips themselves are self-adhesive, there’s a fair bit of wire linking them all together and trying to stick them out of the way with a hot glue gun like I did is just a recipe for getting very hot fingertips and a mess of hot glue everywhere.

It’s been a very long road but we’re very excited to finally have a place of our own, allowing us a lot more flexibility and freedom (not to mention warmth!). If you’re not familiar with Southampton Makerspace (or even if you are) you may be interested to read on.

What is Southampton Makerspace?

Wikipedia states:

A hackerspace (also referred to as a hacklab, makerspace, or hackspace) is a community-operated workspace where people with common interests, often in computers, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialize and/or collaborate.

But we like to think of Southampton Makerspace as a friendly and inclusive community of people who like making things (be they physical, digital or otherwise) and sharing knowledge, experience and tools. Currently the interests of the current membership seem to focus on subjects of technology (3D printing, microcontrollers (Arduino, etc), robotics, home automation, computers (Raspberry Pi, etc) and programming), wood- and metal-work and more arty disciplines such as costume design. We have a significant number of tools available to facilitate these activities and our members are often willing to lend their own personal tools too.

We are keen to attract new members to expand our horizons and build upon other forms of making such as costume design and props, pottery, photography, fine art, glass blowing, baking, games design and anything else that tickles your creative fancy!

Looking back (or: a brief history of Southampton Makerspace)

Activity interest according to the 2012 SoutHACKton survey

It all started as a call to Southampton hackers in 2009, followed by a tentative first meeting at the Crown Inn to gauge interest. Then there were some further meetups including a visit and workshop from Mitch Altman and Jimmie P Rodgers of Noisebridge, San Francisco. We started joint meetings with a Dorkbot group at the Arthouse, where we effectively merged and continued to meet monthly for the next few years (except one meeting at ASpace). Finally by September 2012 our community had grown sufficiently that getting a space of our own seemed feasible, so we ran a survey, the results of which were very promising. In the mean time we started meeting at DHaus/Etch; a venue that enabled us to hack easily without having to worry about the safety of other patrons.

At the beginning of 2013 we attempted to set up a makerspace as a charity, but this was quickly quashed by the Charity Commission who insisted that we were an educational outfit and thus must register with Ofsted to qualify. Not being fans of bereaucracy but not giving in easily we decided to go ahead the next best way – as a non-profit company limited by guarantee (CLG) – So Make It Ltd. Whilst we were sorting out the paperwork to register with Companies House one of our members had located someone who could help us out with somewhere to meet and keep our stuff – Tim from rideride Cycle Workshop was very supportive of our venture. He very generous allowed us to use a 500sqft area in the corner of their warehouse at just the cost of the electricity we used until we were big enough to afford a space of our own. We continued to grow and met much more frequently at the rideride warehouse; until finally at the end of 2013 we realised we were big enough to set out on our own and we crowdfunded some capital and started looking for places to go.

Having ruled out a large number of places; at the very end of 2013 we finally found a suitable and affordable place – Unit K6. We signed the contract early in January and spent the rest of the month moving in and improving the space. There’s still plenty to do but we’re very proud of what we’ve achieved – and it’s much easier to heat than our previous space!

Looking Forward

The Makerspace has run a number of events covering quadcopter drones, build your own mini-Arduino and use it to power your Christmas Lights, learn to program Node.JS and a behind the scenes of rendering in 3DS Max; not to mention our regular 3D printing meetups and of course our thrice-weekly regular openings. But now we have a place of our own with a dedicated workshop room we hope to run many more events in 2014!

Having a space of our own also gives us a lot more freedom – we intend to expand our number of keyholders significantly. Any member can become a keyholder by passing a short list of sensible pre-requisites. We’ll be “hacking” our front door such that any keyholder can get in to the space by scanning an wireless card or similar (like opening the gates at the London Underground using your Oyster card) which gets past the issues of potentially having to revoke all copies of traditional keys. By having more keyholders we should have the space open considerably more than we’ve been able to commit to in the past, and this also relieves the pressure on the trustees freeing them up to work on growing the space in other ways.

Having only existed since March 2013, the Makerspace already has many tools available to use such as a 3D printer, lathe, various drills and saws, angle grinder, welder, soldering irons, printers, guillotines and much more. Besides it’s twice weekly meetups it has also organised a number of events including a soldering workshop, programming course and quadcopter hack day; and hosts a number of groups including electronics (Southackton), 3D printing (So RepRap) and .NET Gadgeteer (Gadgeteer South Coast).

The agreement we have for our space in Southampton is coming to an end in the middle of October, at which point we need to pay for 12 months rent up front. We are asking for donations via a crowd-funding campaign to cover our basic costs for the next year. This will enable us to grow, have more tools and equipment, longer opening hours and more space for more members, more events and more workshops. We will even have our own locked doors and are aiming for 24 hour, seven days a week access for all members!

If you have followed my article on Record and Replay in WMB 8 (also applies to IIB 9), or perhaps you are already using Record and Replay in your Broker deployment, you may have wondered how to clear out the data which will build up over time when recording.

As there are no official tool or instructions for doing this, I thought I would take a moment to give some brief instructions on how you can achieve this yourself.

At the moment, in WMB 8 and IIB 9 only two tables are used to store recorded data: “wmb_msgs” stores each recorded message and some metadata, and “wmb_binary_data” is used if a message body or exception list was recorded. As the tables have no enforced referential integrity all we have to do when deleting data is remove it from the tables in the correct order. For example you could use the following commands to remove messages older than 15th November 2011

DELETE FROM wmb_binary_data WHERE wmb_msgkey IN (SELECT wmb_msgs.wmb_msgkey FROM wmb_msgs WHERE event_timestamp < '2011-11-15 14:54:35.121')
DELETE FROM wmb_msgs WHERE event_timestamp < '2011-11-15 14:54:35.121'

As you will likely want a more complicated WHERE clause, and to check it carefully, you may want to create a sql instruction file, for example with the following content:

-- connect to DB
CONNECT TO rrrdb
-- set an alternate schema if the default doesn't apply to you
-- SET SCHEMA WMB
-- now do our deletes
DELETE FROM wmb_binary_data WHERE wmb_msgkey IN (SELECT wmb_msgs.wmb_msgkey FROM wmb_msgs WHERE event_timestamp < '2011-11-15 14:54:35.121')
DELETE FROM wmb_msgs WHERE event_timestamp < '2011-11-15 14:54:35.121'

Save this in a file, and you can then edit it and check it carefully, then run it with
db2 -f purge.sql

You will notice that we are using strings as our timestamps. This is actually correct, as they are stored as VARCHAR in the table as we couldn’t think of any reason to parse then and turn then into timestamp types in the database, so instead went for the slightly better performing option of a VARCHAR. This of course means you must format your dates in the full ISO standard, with YYYY-MM-DD, always using two digit months and days.

You can also add your own additions to the where clause, just make sure you add it to both DELETE statements.

You don’t have to do this on a db2 command line of course, you could write your own script or application to run the database commands for you, and even add it to a cronjob if desired.

N.B. I have only tested this with db2, though I am pretty certain the same SQL should work in any other database supported by Record & Replay.

(Also posted on the official IBM Integration Bus blog)

SoMakeIt is Southampton’s makerspace has existed for nearly 4 months. It is open Tuesdays 7:30 – 10:00pm and Saturdays 2:00 – 8:00pm and is located in Holybrook rd. We have a website and wiki and are home to the longer-running group Southackton.

We are run by our members, for our members, and are entirely funded by member donations. I should probably point out that I am also a trustee of SoMakeIt.

We are building a growing collection of tools (including a metalworking lathe!) and 3d printers, as well as some pretty good skills and knowledge, so come down and have a look at what we do!

Please spread the word and tell a friend about us too!

It is an interesting talk on the idea of a genius programmer, and will probably ring true for most programmers out there.

I found quite a few similarities in it with agile development techniques, and most of it applies to both open source projects and inside most commercial and corporate development teams. I really found a lot of the ideas and advice agreeing with agile ideas and generally sound like good ideas.

Towards the end of last year we changed broadband to Virgin and it worked out the same price we were paying before to get TV included. This presented a small problem, as the new Virgin Tivo box didn’t fit in the cabinet under the TV as there was a media pc in a full-sized desktop case taking up too much room. I thought about what to do, and considered buying a smaller case (as the computer in it is pretty small), but actually decided that it would be interesting to build a case.

The requirements were pretty simple. It had to house a mini-ITX motherboard, two hard drives, with space to expand for four or six if I ever require it (though powering them may be another matter), and be reasonably accessible. I had decided that the computer didn’t need to be visible from the front, so started thinking about a taller, vertical case to drop down behind the TV. This seemed like a better idea, than any desktop style case sitting under the TV.

As it was never going to be seen, I simply bought a large piece of MDF, and started by simply drawubg outlines for a few components I wanted space. I decided to leave space for a full-sized dvd drive in case I wanted to add it later. For the hard drives, I already had an old drive cage from another PC. The mini-ITX motherboard layout can be found online and so I simply measured, rather carefully, where to put the mounting risers and drilled holes for them. To my surprise they screwed in and held without needing any glue.

Afterthoughts: It turned out to be quite easy to just place things on wood, trace them and put it together, but I’m not sure it is the best way to build something like this. I should probably have modelled something first, maybe digitally, maybe just out of card. The hardest thing was that having started putting it together I realised that the lid was never going to open fully, as the width of the wood got in the way of the opening. Having the lid contain three sides could have helped here, but at the time I didn’t think I would need an aluminium bar to add strength, but didn’t think it would have enough strength for just one end piece to support itself. If I had thought of the aluminium reinforcement before glueing the side panel on then I could have done it differently.

Most of the components on the top of the case, the power buttons, leds, serial connector and IO plate were simply glued in place with a hot glue gun. This worked well, but was a bit messy.

I would have loved to have a go at a metal case, but I simply don’t have any tools for bending metal, so it wasn’t going to be practical. Also, wood is much easier to cut.

MDF seems to have been a poor choice of material. It often split when drilling into the end of the wood, such as drilling holes for the dowel or screwing in the aluminium support piece. Chipboard or plyboard is probably a better choice as it has a bit more strength, or better yet – real solid wood!

I ended up with a lot of space in the case, which is great for working on it, but having only two accessible sides limits access quite a lot. It would have been worth thinking about having the lid differently so that access to the front and two sides was possible. This could also allow it to be smaller but still have good access.

Avoiding hard drive vibrations is tricky. The sealant helps I think, but I would have liked to have had the time to mount the whole thing on rubber grommets, as it does sit in the living room. It is still quieter than the electronics for backlighting the LCD TV though.

It also turns out that I can’t cut any straighter with a jigsaw than a hand saw. I think I need a lot more practise with all saws.

Looking back over last year, I really tried to get into a regular pattern of cycling to work. Some good weeks and some bad added up to 31 days over the year, which sounds somewhat disappointing. 341 miles cycled to work and back sounds a little better, but I really must do better this year. It will be interesting to see how much I actually manage over the course of this year.

Mountain biking wasn’t really any better either, only managing just over 5 rides, though I really enjoyed them. Several of the rides were in the dark and my little light didn’t really do what was required, so I bought a pair of Chinese clones for a fairly modest price. Light-wise, they are brilliant. Not sure about the cardboard in the battery pack, but the light output is incredible for the price, and I have yet to have a single problem with them.

My first serious mountain bike ride was a 26km loop near hursley, following part of Clarendon way which was affectionately nicknamed the cheese-grater as we were going down a dirt staircase with barbed wire on one side at some speed in the dark. A nice ride, despite people getting a few punctures.
http://www.sportstracklive.com/track/detail/antonpiatek/Mountain-Biking/hursley/549054

Then we went out to near Winchester for a ride a CheesefootHead – This was supposed to be a 20-25km ride, but turned out to be a 37km ride which nearly broke me. Not to mention being chased out of a field by a herd of very inquisitive and curious cows who were just getting that bit too friendly! Fantastic views from around here though, which I had brought a camera.
http://www.sportstracklive.com/track/detail/antonpiatek/Mountain-Biking/cheesefoot-head/622592

Then I went back for my second go around Queen Elizabeth Country park, having come-off badly on my first attempt with a good hole in my elbow. The uphill parts are pretty tiring, but the route is really nice and I really recommend getting out there if you are nearby.
http://www.sportstracklive.com/track/detail/antonpiatek/Mountain-Biking/qecp/637658

We also did a ride from Hursley, up through the south edge of Winchester, along the golf course and down through Twyford, Colden Common, and Fair Oak. The time of year was bad as the nettles were massively overgrown, but it was a really nice ride. The GPS stopped in the middle, hence the straight line.
http://www.sportstracklive.com/track/detail/antonpiatek/Mountain-Biking/hursley/742981

And the last ride of the year was another loop from Hursley, which gave me a really good chance to test out my newish lights as it was properly dark and pretty much all offroad. The lights worked great, and the really soft and muddy ground made for an interesting ride. Quite tiring and tricky because of the mud, but the hardest bit was trying to get the bike in the boot of the car without covering everything in mud!
