LSL CV Special - Vintage White

"Llana"

Memphis based LSL dealer Martin Music currently lists this Carl Verheyen signature model in vintage white. And "Llana" is her name.

Lana sports the Verheyen floating trem set up on a tension adjustable Wilkinson unit, as well as the rounded fingerboard edges they call "Lowered Apex" with a 7.25" radius. The medium "C" is hand shaped after Carl's '61 Strat. The body is alder, finish is nitro and body is alder weighing in at just over 7 lbs. Frets are 6105's, and pickups are Carl's design, wound by LSL.

Basically, this is a Strat-o-gasm! Seriously folks, there's nothing but rave buzz out there on LSL guitars. And if FCS was making this, the price would be triple. There's no better time to acquire an LSL!

I first saw Gary Clark Jr. in vids from the most recent Crossroads Fest, where he shared the stage with Doyle Bramhall II. Although it seems like the new Blues generation is mostly white people, and that young black musicians are more interested in other genres, Clark can make it seem like we haven't really heard any Blues in awhile.

No disrespect intended to all the contemporary Blues artists who dedicate their lives to the music. It's just that Gary Clark Jr. has that old strong ammonia piss vibe that just hit the city and plugged into an amp for the first time so many decades ago. And he shows up from some trans-dimensional time rift; like the guy walkin' his dog in a Kurt Vonnegut book. But mostly, this just hits me like hot jet blast on a carrier deck!

Minnesota based vintage Strat maven merchant extreme Ed Matthews aka "Eddie Vegas" just listed yet another vintage Strat of Eric Johnson lineage. I think this is the 4th one I've seen in as many years...

But if there's any doubt, just know that Ed's eBay feedback is 100%, with a 3K plus score. And he always has plenty of serious vintage Fender inventory.

This '62, formerly owned by Eric Johnson (due diligence!) has been featured frequently throughout EJ's career, and dissected by Fender seeking secrets from the old mystics of the non-filter ciggy era. Anyway, Ed's price is $90K, and he doesn't care if he has to sit on it past the Mayan calendar expiration. He also doesn't want any calls from "tire kickers". I spoke to Ed one time-- ya gotta get those questions asked QUICK, before he starts rollin'!

You'd have to accessorize your wardrobe to play this one. I'd recommend a tan suede jacket with the long fringes, Saigon mirror shades, straw cowboy hat and Neil Young sideburns. Include a cream tolex Dual Showman with a bottle of Wild Turkey sitting on top, and you're there.

This is one of the nastiest Nash ~~relic~~ guitars I've seen, since those nitro fire survivors Bill did a few years back. The S-57 Louisiana Roadhouse looks like a flood recovery that survived cuz it was dipped in the fry-o-lator just before the levee, it bust open. Yeah, the case candy should include an order of fried okra!

The ash body, 3-tone nitro finish is loaded with custom Lollars. Neck is a boat, soft "V", meaning it's super fat. And what will this guitar look like in 50 years? Maybe gator tail jerky. But imagine how it will sound!

Serious Guitar!

Meet Kendra, a 6.8 lb swamp ash dream in vintage cream. That's what they call this finish which resembles Fender's trans-blonde Mary Kaye and EJ models. It's nitro as well. SoCal based LSL Instruments gives each guitar build a female name, hence "Kendra".

Bodies, necks and even pickguards are handmade and shaped by LSL, who also wind their own pickups. The S-type model name is "Saticoy", Tele profile is the "T-bone" and they make a Carl Verheyen signature S-type called the "CV Special". Top players are raving about LSL guitars which price point very reasonably at the low side of Fender CS pricing, and a fraction of a DeTemple or D'Pergo. Verheyen's endorsement says it all.

Kendra comes with a 7.25" radius, 21 fret "C", sportin' 6105 frets. The hardware is aged. A G&G case is included.

Who knows? But since we dig Eric Johnson, I'm sure this Fuzz Face will be the master of all models. Just introduced at Winter NAMM 2012, the EJ FF is dialed in to sound like Eric's favorite vintage ones. This is the 4th FF model from the folks at Dunlop. Here's the current selection:

RED - Regular, standard, basic, etc. "Pass the ketchup!"
BLUE - Hendrix model. Sounds just exactly like Jimi... Purple would be smarter.
COPPER - Joe Bonamassa. Bling! Brasso polish not included.
DIJON - Eric Johnson. Mustard for your tone!

Does anyone think this will keep going like all the Crybaby pedals? How many different Crybaby models does Dunlop have now? I'm still waiting for the Yoko Ono Wah.

I think a great little boutique niche could be painting celeb caricatures on Fuzz Face pedals. Imagine the face of Steve Buscemi, Chef Gordon Ramsey, Joe Pesci or Samuel L. Jackson adapted to a FF pedal! The tough part is finding the artist to do it. But then again, there's one at every carnival, fair and trade show. Just remember that you read it here first!

ENGL Retro Tube 100 - Guitarist: Doug Rappoport

You'd think that Guitar World, who uploaded this video, might be just a slight bit interested in the musician. But apparently not-- as there are no credits, captions or tags including the identity of the guitarist.

Check this clip's first 40 seconds, then skip ahead to 03:20 - 05:40. It will become very clear that Doug Rappoport isn't an ENGL shipping & receiving drone brought to NAMM simply because his playing sucks less than the rest of the staff. And just maybe, someone at GW could perceive this enough to plug the musician here. I dunno-- is it just me or WTF?!!

But enough rant already. Know that Rappoport is a busy LA session player, 10 year veteran with Edgar Winter's band and an instructor at Musician's Institute. He also has a cool solo release titled, BIONIC. But mostly, Doug is a badass guitar player worth knowing about! So check the links!

This Anderson Classic S-type features SC1 pickups at neck & middle-- with an SC3 at bridge, vintage style trem and big frets. Body is alder, and neck is tinted flame maple. Includes all orig. candy, paperwork and OHSC. Even the hang tag is on it, so doesn't seem to have much playing time.

I recommend first going to 04:50 for the play along, then checking out the full breakdown at the beginning of the clip. If you're in a Rock, Blues or even Funk rut, this may be the sort of thing to open you up to a sophisticated, yet understated approach that just grooves!

"'Genuine' old vintage pickups are way overpriced and a huge gamble, here's the problem,

In the 1950's, electronics were pretty basic, to the point that the mechanical counters on the machines that Leo & Co used to handwind pickups were very inconsistent, errors in production, both mechanical and human, were common place. This caused the wide variation in specifications and sound we find in vintage pickups sold today. Some sound great, others are less than impressive! Not to mention the possibility of fatal internal issues, check the pic of what killed a real '56 vintage I rebuilt this week! Old DOESN'T mean good! (cont...)

Now you can try something you never thought you could, a totally authentic re-creation of the famous late 50's Strat pickup set. Not the modern mass produced offerings that everyone's playing. These are identical those vintage muti-thousand dollar sets you have seen, only better! WHY....

Because these are serious, quality recreations of the originals, but New and 100% mechanically sound, and I do mean SOUND, (pun intended!)

I start with real black forbon bobbins, lacqured to prevent internal corrosion (check that last pic again!) around the sand cast staggered and hand beveled, etched AlNiCo poles. All "scatterwound" to the magical Tone Zone.

The AlNiCo 3 (around 1/2 the power of AlNiCo5) combines with the scatterwinding to achieve clarity,chime and top end shimmer while still retaining a rich and warm "Bluesy" tone with true power. The hand aged, hand bevelled AlNiCo poles add a smooth, mellow warmth to the classic strat "bell tones and quack" without the thin "ice-pick" sterility found with most newer, cheap and machine produced pickups.

For Auction are a matched set of handmade "scatterwound" Classic 57's, a re-creation 1957 spec, single coil pickups for your Strat or Clone or Special project.

All personally handwound in Sydney Australia. All parts are imported from the USA and the highest quality, true to the original Fender pickups. The fact is that all best,major and boutique pickup makers, use parts from a few common suppliers.

This set consists of 3 hand made scatterwound Single Coil Pickups with aged Parchment White 50's re-pro "rounded" Bakelite style relic Pickup Covers. This set has a vintage "Straight Up" NO RW/RP middle pickup. All are matched to work perfectly with 3 or 5 way switching and no "out of phase" issues or dramas!

All come with my "Bakelite" style pickup covers (exclusive to Slider's) and a full set of "age matched" 6/32 UNC round head mounting screws with vintage style amber rubber compression spacers.

All are Lacquered, prior to winding to prevent long term corrosion of the wire against the AlNiCo poles (the most common problem I see for killing vintage pickups), then Wax potted "post build" to reduce possible high volume microphonics and provide protection to the delicate windings.

All pickups come individually labeled and signed with all specs relating to Materials, Polarity and Composition.

These are not an "off the shelf" pickup and are intended for the discerning player or restorer of fine instruments."

As her above 2011 GNR cover demonstrates, Etta went out fighting! And a whole lotta girls out there are carrying on all the better because of her influence. So Ms. Etta gave a lot to us in her 73 years, and we thank her for it!

Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, Joss Stone, Beth Hart, Christy Whitley, Joanne Shaw Taylor and many others are keeping Etta James alive and well.

2007 was the 20th Anniversary of Fender Custom Shop. Hence the oval headstock stamp & neckplate. This Jason Smith Masterbuilt Closet Classic from '07 features a thoroughly checked Fiesta Red nitro finish on a light ash body with tinted neck & rosewood fretboard. The 9.5", large 21 fret "C" has 6105 frets and a fat headstock. Pickups are '69's at neck and mid with a Texas Special bridge coil. Pickguard is a 3 ply minty.

Olivia's Vintage based in Illinois, currently lists this as pre-owned but mint condition. Includes COA and OHSC. Seller is Top-rated with over 5K of positive feedback. Plenty of hi-end gear listings!

Besides all steel semi-hollows, Trussart does wood. But the metal accenting that has become Trussart's trademark, is boldly utilized throughout the line-- down to the gray stained maple necks. And this Steel O Matic S-type has a chambered alder body, so don't worry about it weighing in with a Chevy diesel Silverado 2500. Whew!

Sugar Pine is also a body option. Neck is a "62" profile, 10" radius with 6105 frets. Pickups are by Arcane. Rustproofing, extended power train coverage and towing package are probably gonna run extra.

Young Ryan Watson here seems comfortable enough up on stage handling both guitar and vocals on Crazy Train. Just havin' fun like a regular kid. I guess nobody told him this might be biting off more than he can chew. Kudos to the parents for lettin' this train roll! Wonder if that's a Yngwie Strat? Can you see scallops?

This video, from May, 2011, indicates Ryan as 9. He might be 10 now-- ooooh! Ryan's band is called "Unavailable", based in Fredrick, MD, and they have a Facebook page you can LIKE, to monitor their progress as the lads keep growing. Wonder what their groupie scene is like...

Wurlitzer Music Of Boston (Top-rated, spotless seller) is currently listing this '61, single owner, heavily used Strat! They oughta include photos of the owner's hands as well... probably has those big knuckles like Keef! If you check the full listing while it's there, you'll see tons of pics including full disassembly, electronics, screws, saddles, crust, corrosion and every inch of fretboard. They claim everything is original except for one saddle and some bridge screws that got too corroded to use. But those original loose parts are still included. And the finish is gone. Gone!

Ok, so actually the finish was stripped. I'm surprised there's no mention of the finish residue included in a ziplock or maybe an urn. But you can ask about that...

New '59 Relic

This lemon has been squeezed! And zested!!!

This is the very first Fender Custom Shop YELLOW Relic Strat we've ever seen! Maybe yellow is making a comeback. Or possibly since the world is supposed to end this year, they decided to just go for it.

This one has Fat 50's pickups, 6105 frets and a custom neck with a slight "V". Oddly enough, the neck is also a compound radius, though no specs are given. Maybe 7.25 to 10 or 9.5 to 12-- but I have no clue. Call 'em!
