FIRST ALLOW ME TO THANK EVERYONE FOR COMING.

IN BEHALF OF THE OFFICERS AND STAFF OF THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES I WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON SOME ISSUES THAT MAY HAVE BEEN MISUNDERSTOOD OR MISINTERPRETED.

FIRSTLY, LET ME RESTATE IN MY OWN WORDS THE VISION AND MISSION OF THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES:

THE VISION OF THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES IS TO MAKE ART MATTER TO THE LIFE OF EVERY FILIPINO. AND WE AIM TO DO THIS BY CREATING, PRODUCING, AND PRESENTING CULTURAL EXPERIENCES FROM THE PHILIPPINES AND AROUND THE WORLD – ONSITE, OFFSITE AND ONLINE. WE ALSO AIM TO SHOWCASE THE BEST EXAMPLES OF PHILIPPINE AESTHETICS AND EDUCATE THE FUTURE ARTISTS AND AUDIENCES FOR ARTS AND CULTURE.

I JOINED THE CULTURAL CENTER OF THE PHILIPPINES AS AN ARTIST AND MANAGER IN 1986 RIGHT AFTER THE PEOPLE POWER REVOLUTION. AND I AM PROUD TO HAVE BEEN NURTURED IN AN ATMOSPHERE THAT ENCOURAGED THE BLOSSOMING OF ARTISTIC EXPRESSION. I AM DOUBLY PROUD TO REPRESENT MANY TALENTED, EXCELLENT, COMMITTED (AND MAY I ADD - UNDERPAID AND OVERWORKED) ARTISTS AND ARTIST MANAGERS IN CCP .

EVEN AMONG US IN THE ART WORLD, MANY WERE OFFENDED WHEN WE FIRST VIEWED POLITEISMO. BUT IT SERVED AS AN AWAKENING. IT ROUSED OUR SENSES, CHALLENGED US TO TAKE A DEEPER LOOK, WOKE US UP TO A LESS INNOCENT WORLD: WHAT IS THE ARTIST TRYING TO SAY? WHY AM I REACTING THIS WAY? SHOULD I BE ANGRY? OR SHOULD I BE MORE INTROSPECTIVE? SHOULD I JUDGE THE ART WORK FOR WHAT I SEE ON THE SURFACE OR SHOULD I TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS DOING TO AFFECT ME? THIS IS THE EXPERIENCE OF ART.

A LOT OF US AGREE THAT THE CONSEQUENCES OF KULO COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED AND INDEED, THIS HAS SERVED TO GIVE US A LESSON THAT WILL GUIDE US IN THE FUTURE.

BUT WE CANNOT IGNORE THE IMPORTANT FACT THAT IT HAS CREATED OPPORTUNITY AND CHALLENGE TO ENGAGE OTHERS, ESPECIALLY AT THIS TIME OF CHANGE.

YOUNG OR OLD, WE NEED OPENNESS AND DIALOGUE THAT WOULD WAKE US FROM OUR COMFORT ZONES. UNDERSTANDING AND CALM, RATHER THAN JUDGEMENT, VIOLENCE OR THREATS.

WE UNDERSTAND THE DISAPPOINTMENT AND FRUSTRATION OF OUR ARTISTS WHEN THEY LEARNED ABOUT THE CLOSURE OF THE MAIN GALLERY. TO THEM PLEASE BELIEVE US WHEN WE SAY WE WILL REMAIN COMMITTED TO THE CAUSE OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM.

IN VIEW OF THE EXTREME REACTION WE RECEIVED AND CONTINUE TO RECEIVE, THE MENACING THREATS THE ARTIST AND SOME MEMBERS OF THE BOARD HAVE BEEN RECEIVING, IT HAD BEEN NECESSARY TO TAKE ACTION TO CALM TEMPERAMENTS.

WE WILL BE HOLDING DIALOGUES WITH RELEVANT SECTORS THAT WILL RESULT IN DRAWING UP REASONABLE GUIDELINES THAT WILL (A) ENSURE AN ATMOSPHERE CONDUCIVE TO ARTISTIC FRUITION (B) ENSURE RECOGNITION OF SENSITIVITIES, (C ) ENCOURAGE ABIDING TOLERANCE.

IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT THE BIG PICTURE HAS BEEN LOST IN THE FURY AND CONFUSION OF RECENT DAYS. IN ALL MY YEARS WORKING WITH THE CCP, I AM VERY PROUD TO SAY THAT IT IS ONE GOVERNMENT AGENCY THAT HAD FOUGHT HARD AND STILL CONTINUES TO FIGHT HARD TO KEEP ITSELF FREE FROM INFLUENCES OR PRESSURES THAT THREATEN ARTISTIC EXPRESSION.

THIS OF COURSE HAD MADE US VERY VULNERABLE. BECAUSE OF THIS, WE WOULD LIKE TO DO OUR PART IN CREATING BETTER UNDERSTANDING BY HOLDING A SERIES OF PUBLIC FORUMS ON ART AND ARTISTIC FREEDOM, ART AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, AND ART AND THE MEDIA.

I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE MEDIA TO A TOUR OF THE BACKSPACES OF THE CULTURAL CENTER SO YOU CAN WITNESS THE MANY ARTISTS WHO ARE LOVINGLY AND PASSIONATELY CRAFTING THEIR NEXT GIFTS FOR THE PUBLIC. SO YOU CAN SEE THE FLOOR BOARDS, THE WALLS, THE CORRIDORS WHERE THIS EXCITING PROCESS CALLED ART HAPPENS; FEEL THE ENERGY OF THIS WONDERFUL EXCHANGE AND ENGAGEMENT OF CREATIVE MINDS; SO THAT WE MAY ALL BETTER APPRECIATE WHERE ART COMES FROM, HOW ART IS CREATED AND WHY WE ALL NEED TO STAUNCHLY UPHOLD THIS SPACE CALLED ARTISTIC FREEDOM.

IN THE 1950S THERE WAS A MOVE TO BAN THE TEACHING OF JOSE RIZAL’S NOVELS ‘NOLI ME TANGERE’ AND ‘EL FILIBUSTERISMO’, THE TRIUMPH OF KNOWLEDGE OVER UNENLIGHTENMENT HAS MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR US TODAY TO RELISH THIS ARTISTIC WORK AS ONE OF THE NATION’S GREAT CULTURAL TREASURES. THE MUSICAL VERSION OF NOLI ME TANGERE IS NOW PLAYING AT THE LITTLE THEATER. A WRITER AND A CHOREOGRAPHER ENVISIONED A NATURAL CATASTROPHE OF LANDSLIDES AND FLOODS BECAUSE OF MAN’S DISPRESPECT OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND WAY BEFORE ONDOY AND THE RECENT NATURAL CALAMITIES – THEY CREATED THE DANCE PIECE “ENCANTADA” WHICH IS OPENING THIS WEEK AT THE CCP MAIN THEATER. WE CONTINUE TO CREATE AND TO OFFER GIFTS TO OUR PUBLIC INSPITE OF THE DIFFICULTIES WE FACE IN FUNDING.

WE NEED YOU TO CHAMPION THE ARTS AND NOT DENIGRATE IT. WE NEED YOU TO SUPPORT THE ARTS INSTEAD OF THREATENING TO DEFUND IT. THE UPHOLDING OF ARTISTIC FREEDOM SHOULD BE EVERYONE’S STEADFAST RESPONSIBILITY – FOR IT IS ONLY IN THIS FREEDOM THAT WE CAN ALL LIVE SIDE BY SIDE IN ABIDING TOLERANCE AND SOULFUL CREATIVITY.

Dulaang UP's Titus Andronicus

In a land where politics and carnage exist as a way of life, where fear and blood begets allegiance, and where the muffled cries of injustice are buried in a hapless pit, is there a chance for honor and integrity to prevail?

Dulaang UP presents Titus Andronicus: Silang mga Diyos at Diyosa, Layeta Bucoy’s Filipino adaptation of William Shakespeare’s controversial tragedy, under the direction of Tuxqs Rutaquio, featuring a stellar cast led by Cinemalaya 2011 best actor Bembol Roco, best supporting actress Shamaine Centera-Buencamino, GMA 7 actor Mike Tan and theater veteran Rolando Inocencio, together with today’s most talented crop of young theater performers from Dulaang UP and the theater, television, and film industry.

The play runs from September 14 to October 2, 2011, at the Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater, 2nd floor, Palma Hall, U.P. Diliman, Quezon City.

Philippines-Japan Friendship Month Opens on July 1 with Eiga Sai—The Japanese Film Festival

An exquisite Japanese cinematic masterpiece at all levels—visual, aural, emotional, spiritual, awaits Eiga Sai fanatics this July featuring Departures, winner of the 81st Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2009. The Eiga Sai opens on July 1 (Friday) at the Shang Cineplex Cinema 2, Shangri-La Plaza, EDSA, Mandaluyong City as a kick-off event of the month-long festivity.

Departures takes a bizarre and unique subject with heartwarming scenes and outstanding acting performances by Masahiro Motoki, who played the role of Daigo Kobayashi, an aspiring cellist who eventually takes the job of an encoffinner, sending the deceased body off to final departure with dignity. He coveted the Best Actor awards (32nd Japan Academy Prize in 2008 and Kinema Junpo Awards in 2009) for his role in the film complimenting the brilliant mind of its acclaimed director Yojiro Takita.

The film festival officially reels off with an invitational screening and special performance of Mr. Renato Lucas, the principal cellist of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra together with pianist—Ms. Naomi Sison, at 7:00 P.M. at the Atrium Plaza, Shangri-la Plaza.

“Eiga Sai,” which literally means ‘film festival’ now on its 13th year is organized by the Japan Foundation, Manila together with the Embassy of Japan, The Shangri-La Plaza Corporation, UP Film Institute and supported by Lyric Piano, and ClickTheCity.com.

Completing this year’s roster of exciting films to be featured are The Summit: Chronicle of Stones; The Chef of South Polar; One Million Yen Girl; Your Friend; Yunagi City, Sakura Country; Summer Days with Coo; Climber's High; Feel the Wind; and Villon's Wife.

All films will be shown with English subtitles. Admission is free. In the deceptively simple conversation between mother and son, ambiguous and seemingly random recollections paint a portrait of a woman trying to rediscover strenght, and the drive to revisit her long abandoned desire.

The couple’s struggle to save their lives was awkwardly turned into a fight, crystallizing their own family “storm” – their chronic, even futile problems. But when Ondoy subsided, who will be booted out?

BALUNBALUNAN, BINGIBINGIHAN by Debbie Ann Tan, directed by Issa Lopez

Featuring: Bembol Roco, Missy Maramara, Paul Jake Paule

Gilbeys and Brandy, 20 years apart are husband and wife, pimp and whore who love each other dearly. Brandy with her repertoire of roles as nurse, baker, cook or tutor does her trade with perfunctory ease that brings to the table Gilbey’s sole diet: chicken gizzard. However, life gets more difficult. They decide to take in a boarder, someone who could help them in this covert trade as well.

Enter Whiskey,a virile lad who looks and acts nice. The couple take him in as a bedspacer. They eventually reveal their trade to Whiskey and insinuate an offer to work for them as a “plumber.”

But three is always a crowd. Jealousies and hate begin to tear this odd trio apart. Whiskey proffers his love for Brandy. Gilbeys suspects Whiskey of being a traitor anda thief. Brandy is torn between the two.

But Gilbeys and Brandys love for each other runs deep. A love that links the matter of eating chicken gizzards.

Every night, a streetlight is the lone witness to the meetings between two hired killers responsible for the string of murders in a particular area in Manila— and every day, dead bodies are left underneath it for a police detective to find, and a young journalist to investigate and report. Streetlight Manifestotackles the subjective nature of truth and justice, and frames the discussion on dignity of work amist the backdrop of Manila’s business casual culture of violence. But for every day the investigation remains unresolved, the body count continues to rise.

Miranda Beloto, wife of Governor Bingo Beloto is obsessed with the idea of bringing to her impoverished province the first staging of a full length opera. As she prepares to face her corrupt, insensitive husband, she must also deal with the pressure from her own manipulative mother. It seems that Miranda’s foolhardy vision of beauty is all she can cling to in the face of so much brutality. Or is she herself a crucial part of the cycle of corruption?

A mother, wife and daughter remain in the realm of resistance to seek justice. Each has lost a loved one from the tragic sinking of MV Princess of the Stars where 773 people died. One of the worst maritime disasters in recent years, the vessel sank because of the shipping line’s insistence to sail amidst a looming typhoon.

Three years since the sinking, the women persist. However, they slowly forget. Time consumes them, great powers offer bribes, the cost of the struggle becomes insurmountable. Most of all, the memory of pain stabs each time it is remembered. Some succumb to the solace of oblivion, leaving the seemingly endless battle while some remain amidst certain pain and uncertain answers.

This is an elegy for all those lost at sea and their relatives left behind. This play allows us to understand their struggle.

It is February 14, Valentine`s Day. Eva is trapped in a bus stop along EDSA. Desperately trying to get a cab to make it to her father`s burial in La Loma, she asks passersby how she could make it to her destination. She sees an easy access to make it to the other lane ---an opening in the middle of the highway that bears this sign: BAWAL TUMAWID, NAKAMAMATAY. In the meantime, Eva meets a stranger, an old carpenter named Mang Caloy. The old man gives her options on how to make it to La Loma but she remains indecisive.

Heavy traffic and the heavy rain engage them into a peculiar conversation. A coffee shop near the bus stop becomes their refuge and here they begin sharing sentimental and funny stories about their past. Eva talks about her father`s death and her simple dreams as a hopia vendor. Mang Caloy breaks the serene conversation by telling the story behind the signage. An unpredictable revelation of the old man`s past marks the climax of the play. As the busy avenue becomes expansive again, an unexpected accident happens, leaving Eva in deep shock.

Mina thinks it sick that their father is having a "funeral" even before he is dead and that his having cancer was just an excuse to get them to go home. Alvin could not understand her resentment towards their father. As Alvin tries to hide his feelings towards his adopted sister, Mina tries to sleep away the demons of their family's past in the comfort and solace of her brother's room.

Ang Babae sa Septic Tank chronicles a day in the life of three ambitious, passionate but misguided filmmakers as they set out to do a quick pre-prod at Starbucks, a courtesy call to their lead actress, Eugene Domingo, and an ocular inspection of their film’s major location, the Payatas dumpsite. Director Rainier, Producer Bingbong and Production Assistant Jocelyn are well-to-do, well-educated film school graduates who are dead set on making an Oscar worthy film. When Marlon, a college student, stalks Karen, his literature professor, he finds out that she moonlights as a choreographer and dance teacher in a dance studio. Frustrated over his performance in her literature class, he plans to impress her instead by learning to poeticize his body movements and enroll in her dance class. He hires his classmate to teach him the basics of dancing. As Dennis, his tutor, teaches him how his body should move, Marlon begins to understand the intersections between the art of poetry and dance. This opens up his world to new insights about the life of Karen as a single woman who chose to live the life of an artist in a third world setting. CUCHERA by Joseph Laban

Based on a true story, Cuchera is about Filipino drug mules, drug couriers and their recruiters. It follows the story of Isabel, a veteran drug mule, in her first attempt at running her own drug transshipment operation between Manila and China. Isabel’s character is based on the story of an actual Filipina drug mule who was caught with eight capsules of heroin lodged in her sex organ, 48 in the rectum and 11 in her abdomen after an x-ray was conducted by Chinese authorities. Cuchera presents an accurate depiction of how some Filipinos end up becoming entrenched in the world of illegal drugs. Currently, the Philippines leads all Southeast Asian countries in the number of nationals arrested for drug smuggling charges in China. As of 2009, there are currently 95 Filipinos languishing in various jails in Chinese territories---four of whom are on death row. Violators include minors who enter China with fake passports. The long-standing conflict between the military forces and the rebel group Abu Sayaff has severely ravaged the poor town of Patikul in Sulu. Residents have become so accustomed to the armed clashes, that reports of kidnappings and recruitment of young Tausugs to join the rebel groups already became normal news to them. However, Amman, a 33 year old coffee farmer in Sitio Kan-Ague, continues to believe that there is still hope for their town. Amman believes that educating his children would change their present situation. His 9-year old son Fahad is one of Kan-Ague Elementary School’s top students. Fahad’s brilliance and perseverance have led him to represent his school in the annual regional quiz bee. Joined by his best friend Alelie, Fahad goes through rigorous training under Michael Balmes, the principal of Kan-Ague Elementary School. Michael is one of the few volunteer teachers who walk daily through a dangerous path just to get to Kan-Ague. Michael’s constant encouragement and persistence to educate the kids in Kan-Ague gives new promise to the residents of Kan-Ague. However, this hope becomes short-lived after a relative of one of the volunteer teachers dies in an armed encounter between the army and rebels. Little did the residents know that this incident would lead to the death of their beloved principal and, for fear for their own safety, force the teachers to abandon the students of Kan-Ague. The town’s worsening situation compels Amman to take action and convince his co-parents to find a solution, but Amman soon discovers that this won’t be an easy task. Most of the parents are reluctant to cooperate, and he finds no support from the local government. Programme A:

UN DIUTAY MUNDO: An unknown “point of view” witnesses everything that happens in the place where it is located---a dark room occupied by a feral child. It narrates how this child is being treated by the ones who look after him, how curious he is of the world outside, and how he longs to break free from being trapped in that room. Meanwhile, a girl who dreams to be a writer is able to enter the room and get in touch with the feral child. This is the start of the child’s struggle of breaking free from isolation. This was all witnessed and narrated by the “point of view”. But before a bond between the girl and the child tightens, the ones who have been keeping the child from the outside world discovered what has been going on. The “point of view” then unfolds the child’s helplessness because he is still trapped not only in that room but also in his condition. It also tells how the girl fails to fulfill her dream of becoming a writer because she is now trapped in her situation. Lastly, the “point of view” tells how it desires to help the child break free but is unable to do so. The reason lies in the revelation of what the “point of view” is. SAMARITO: Midnight. An adept thief makes his silent way towards a rich couple’s walled compound. He has everything considered: the location of the street-light base to help him vault the perimeter, the vulnerable back gate, the number of steps to the couple’s bedroom. The only thing he didn’t count on is the couple returning early from an aborted night out. The thief steps out of the bedroom to the distinct sound of strife. The couple is in the midst of a heated argument, and the argument only gets hotter from here. The thief watches as the confrontation escalates until the man explodes in rage and floors the woman with a solid punch across the face. The thief is in shock. The man screams at his downed lover and continues to physically pummel her. The thief sneaks back out of the home, but he is not unaffected by what he’s seen. He beats a hasty retreat, but stops in his tracks. He looks back over his shoulder. He takes a deep breath. Does the thief have it in himself to do the right thing? Is his conscience and humanity beyond salvation? Everything will unfold on this unquiet night and nothing will ever be the same again for our thief; the most unlikely of Samaritans. WALANG KATAPUSANG KWARTO: Ang kwentong ito ay mayroon katapusang…hindi lang halata. Magaganap ang kwento sa isang silid kung saan dito lamang hindi nagtatago ang ating mga karakter. Dahil dito sa silid na ito ay Malaya sila, walang nakakarinig kundi ang apat na pader lamang na naghihiwalay sa kanila sa totoong mundo. Maaring sabihin na ito ay kwento ng pag-ibig. Maari ding hindi... EVERY OTHER TIME: College and partying are almost synonymous to one another, so are making mistakes. The freedom we have during college can sometimes make us forget the tiniest of our responsibilities. After a night of hard partying, this guy realizes he left something behind. NINO BONITO: Boni, a little boy from the slums, squares off with the stark reality of drugs, petty crime and abuse armed with his own brand of hip hop and some divine intervention.

HANAPBUHAY: A day in the life of a man who’s trying to make a living for his family as he is confronted by the ironies of the realities of life. And death.OLIVER'S APARTMENT: This short film is about a man named Oliver who has not left his apartment over seven years. An obsessive-compulsive germaphobe, he has everything delivered to him and he lives each day the same. One day he receives a postcard and things start to unravel. IMMANUEL: Immanuel is set in speculative Philippines where air pollution has reached irreparable proportions. Air pollution has rendered breathable oxygen scarce. This makes it the main resource around which society revolves. The film follows to protagonists: Leo Sagaysay, a young father and husband who works at the Oxygen Factory, and his wife Rubi. Together they have a son, whom they struggle to support. The appearance of an ex-factory worker at their door sets off a chain of events that leads to the downfall of the Sagaysay family. DEBUT: An adolescent girl awakens to the first day of the rest of her life. HAZARD: While out driving together, a father and his son discover that they share different principles and perspectives in life. Upon reaching the city’s outskirts, they make an even more disturbing discovery that will push their unstable relationship to its limits.

15 writing fellows chosen for the 4th Palihang Rogelio Sicat

From more than 100 applicants, 15 young writers have been chosen as fellows to the 4th Rogelio Sicat Writing Workshop.
This year, the participants of the only national creative writing workshop in the Filipino language are the following:
POETRY: Philip Anorico (Angono, Rizal), Joshua Diokno (Quezon City), Lolito Go (Olongapo City, Zambales), Ram Hernandez (San Mateo, Rizal), Louie Jon Sanchez (Caloocan City), Randel Urbano (Quezon City), and Jenny Whil Mesiera Valenzuela (Lucena City, Quezon). SHORT STORY: Patricia Ruth B. Cailao (Quezon City), Mary Deane Camua (Guiguinto, Bulacan), Jesus Catigan Insilada (Calinog, Iloilo), Pia Montalban (Quezon City), Anna Christina G. Nadora (Meycauayan City, Bulacan), Renato R. Santillan (Dagupan City, Pangasinan), and Karl Ivan Dan V. Orit (Bacoor, Cavite). ESSAY: Ipelineo Soco (Valenzuela City)
The workshop will be conducted by pillars of Philippine literature namely Efren Abueg, Rogelio Ordoñez, and Elmer Ordoñez as well as the writing workshop’s regular faculty.
“The number of workshop applicants for this year is record-breaking. There are many well-written entries. Unfortunately, we only have 15 slots for the workshop,” says Dr. Jimmuel Naval, chairperson of the Department of Filipino and Philippine Literature (Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikang Pilipino, DFPP) of the University of the Philippines, and workshop co-director.
The Fourth Palihang Rogelio Sicat is handled by the DFPP and the Cavite Young Writers’ Association. This year’s writing workshop will be held at Alfonso, Cavite on 26 –29 May 2011.
“Many applicants were from places outside Metro Manila like Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Iloilo, Negros, Bikol and Northern Luzon,” said Prof. Reuel Molina Aguila, workshop co-director.

Lumaki ako sa pamilyang bibihira o talagang walang nagbabasa.

Wala akong natatandaan anumang babasahin sa loob ng
aming bahay noon. Ang ganitong kapaligiran ang dahilan kung bakit di ko
rin nagustuhan ang pagbabasa.

Pagdating ko ng hay skul, ang konsepto ko ng aklat o mga
babasahin ay ensayklopedia lang. Naiinggit nga ako sa aming mga
kapitbahay na may isang estante ng ensayklopedia na bibihira nilang
buksan o basahin, na kung ilang buwan din nilang hinulugan. Di pa noonuso ang xerox at wala pang xerox sa aming lugar, kung kaya nagtiis ako
sa pagkopya kapag may pa-assignment ang aming titser. Noon din, akala
ko, kapag may-ensayklopedia sa bahay, mayaman o maykaya, o kaya may
mataas na pinag-aralan ang mga nakatira.

Bagamat nasa probinsya ako, nakakaluwas pa rin ako ng
Manila nang mag-isa para bumili ng aking mga gamit sa National
Bookstore sa may SM Edsa. Doon nakita ko ang marami at iba’t ibang
libro. May iba pa palang libro bukod sa ensayklopedia. Pero napansin
kong puro mga librong isinulat ng mga banyaga ang kanilang idinidispley
sa salamin.

Pagdating ko ng kolehiyo, doon ko lang talagang
nakahiligan ang pagbabasa. Ilan sa aking mga kaklase ay mahilig
magbasa. Paramihan kami ng nabasa. Palitan at hiraman. Tanda ko,
Popular Bookstore sa may Doroteo Jose ang aming bilihan ng mga murang
libro. Yabangan kami ng aming mga nabasa, kaya nakakahiya kung wala
akong nabasa.

Natatandaan ko, dahil sa kagustuhan kong matapos ang
isang lumang-lumang libro ng isang manunulat na Pilipino, ipinuslit ko
sa aklatan ng aming pamantasan ang aklat. Problema ko kasi, dahilpanggabi akong estudyante lagi ring sarado ang aklatan. Sarado ang
aklatan sa mga estudyanteng panggabi na tulad ko.

Lalo pa akong nahilig sa pagbabasa nang makahiligan ko
rin ang pagsusulat. Sabi nga, ang isang manunulat ay isa ring
mambabasa. Sa bawat perang natatanggap ko, isang libro agad ang
binibili ko. At kahit saan man ako mapunta, lagi kong kasama ang mga
naipon kong libro. Di talaga ako matatahimik kung di ko kasama ang mga
libro kong nakahanay nang maayos, tulad noong tumira ako sa Siniloan
Laguna sa loob ng dalawang taon. Pero sa kasamaang-palad, nang
magkaroon ng malakas na bagyo sa Siniloan Laguna, nabalutan ng putik
ang aking mga libro. Ang dating mababangong pahina ay bumaho at
nagkulay-putik. Para akong namatayan noon, matinding depression angnaranasan ko.

Pero lagi’t laging puwedeng magsimula. Nagsimula muli akong mag-ipon at bumili ng mga libro.

Napuntahan ko na ang lahat ng maaaring bilhan ng mga
libro. Mula sa pinakamamahal hanggang sa mumurahin tindahan ng mga
libro. Mula Glorietta hanggang sa isang second hand bookstore sa
Baguio, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao at iba pa, napuntahan ko na. Mula
mga coffee table book hanggang sa mga children’s book, may collection
ako. Mula sa mga libro ukol sa teorya hanggang sa mga panitikan,
kulturang popular, media at iba pa.

Noong magkaroon ako ng sariling bahay, kauna-unahang
ipinagawa ko ay lalagyan ng libro. Gusto kong matahimik na ang mga ito.
Alam na alam ko rin kung may gumalaw o kaya ay may nawawala sa akingmga libro. Nakaayos ang mga ito ayon sa mga manunulat.

Aureaus Solito’s first feature film Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros won 15 international awards including three awards at the Berlinale - The Teddy Award, International Jury Prize at the Kinderfest and Special Mention from the Children's Jury of the Kinderfest. It is also the first Philippine film nominated for Best Foreign film at the Independents' Spirit Awards in the US. It has been shown in more than 50 film festivals around the world. He is the first Filipino to make it to the premiere independent film festival in the world, the SUNDANCE Film Festival in Park City, Utah, USA; two years in a row for both The Blossoming of Maximo Oliveros and Tuli, his second feature.

TP's Noli Me Tangere: The Musical, Named!

After the rigid auditions held last March at the CCP Tanghalang Amado V. Hernandez and The Music School (of Mr. Ryan Cayabyab), the complete cast of Noli Me Tangere: The Musical is now set!

In honour of Jose Rizal’s 150th birthday, the critically acclaimed musical adapted by Ryan Cayabyab from Rizal’s most famous work with libretto by National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera and under the direction of theater luminary Audie Gemora, will be re-staged with costume design by National Artist Salvador Bernal.

Taking the lead role of Crisostomo Ibarra is young actor and music heartthrob Mark Bautista, alternated by the equally talented Arnold Reyes. Very much fitting the female lead is the sweet pop chanteuse – Cris Villonco – as Maria Clara. The vile Padre Damaso is to be played by veteran actor Bodjie Pascua, as versatile actressAngeli Bayani does Sisa.

The rest of the powerhouse cast includes Gerald Napoles as Elias – alternated by Riki Benedicto, Al Gatmaitan as Padre Salvi, Ring Antonio as Doña Victorina, Gary Lim as Don Tiburcio, Red Nuestro as Kapitan Tiago, Jenny Villegas as Tia Isabel, and Lao Rodriguez as the Leproso.

The chorus is composed of Jenny Garcia, Pamela Imperial, Janine Santos, Sherine Ann Koa, Hazel Grace Maranan, Diana Sison, Kathlyn Castillo, Martha Nikko Comia, Eric Arenas, Gino Ramirez, Chesko Rodriguez, Jejie Esguerra, Von Ryan Yu, Berl William Angeles, Paolo Rodriguez, Baron Barbers, and Greg deLeon.

This production of Noli Me Tangere, in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd), will also serve as the launch of the National Campaign urging high school students to join forces with the Kabataang Rizal Movement in order to promote the ideals of Rizal and his vision for the Philippines.

Noli Me Tangere: The Musical opens on August 5, 2011 at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino.

Busong is the indigenous Palawan concept of Fate or instant Karma. Nature reacts instantly to man's disrespect of nature and other men. Punay was born with wounds in her feet so that she cannot step on the earth. Her brother, Angkarang, carries her through a hammock, as he searches the changing landscape of Palawan in hoping to find a healer who can cure Punay. Different people help him carry his sister along the way- a woman looking for her husband, a fisherman who lost his boat and a young man who is searching for himself- and each one meets their fate.
