It must be another slow news day...

Billy Crystal comes back to host the Academy Awards and does his usual great job of it. Although the 3 hour running time makes the ceremony a slog no matter who's MCing the shindig. And of course there are skits and jabs galore to punch up the pace and keep all of us from falling asleep before the good categories are called up. And one of those skits was a parody of Woody Allen's film Midnight In Paris where Sammy Davis Jr (Crystal in make up) makes an appearance.

This morning I see articles about a backlash and tweets from various people on the "black-face incident" at the Oscars. If you can't see the difference in these two images:

Giving scratch tickets as Christmas gifts is asking for trouble...

Some years ago a coworker gave me a couple of scratch tickets for an office Christmas gift. At first I was surprised because I didn't expect to get anything from her. Not that I didn't like her or thought she wasn't cool, in fact she was very cool, I just didn't expect to get a gift from her. After the heartwarming surprise wore off, I then felt that anticipation you get when gambling at any level. Scratching the numbers, I imagined winning and doing all kinds of things with the 20k grand prize. Bills paid, debts resolved, world travel, high class call girls

And just that fast it was over. No win, no money, no bills paid, no high class hookers. Nothin'. I had that little emotional crash you have when you don't hit the number your playing and tossed the tickets in the trash. Then a few minutes later it hit me.

That was a cheap fucking gift! That was nothing! That was a two minute high with a 10 minute low that took me on an emotional roller-coaster ride to Shitsville!

Bruce got scratch tickets for Xmas too...

What kind of gift is that? A gift is supposed to make you feel good and add something to your life. Even if its a practical gift (which is no fun) it still adds something your life. A sweater, potholders, undershirts and socks are not fun gifts but they're still useful, Scratch tickets don't add anything unless you win and the odds are heavily against you on that. Which is another shitty aspect of the "gift". Name another gift that has a probability factor not in your favor? Don't worry, I'll wait...

Imagine getting the greatest most exciting video game for a gift. But the hitch is you have to guess the correct number combination to unlock the game. Not unlock secret levels, no, to play the game period you have to guess the right numbers. Oh, and you only have one shot at it and chances are you won't guess the right numbers. Now you see just how fucked up a thing that is to give to someone, right...

Now you may be saying, yeah but Nic, she didn't have to give you anything in the first place. True, but if she hadn't my day wouldn't have changed at all. I wouldn't have gone on that emotional trip and gotten my hopes up just to have it all come crashing down in the span of a few seconds.

The other aspect of why it's a crappy gift is what if you win big? Some scratch/lottery tickets have incremental prizes leading to the grand prize. So its possible to win anywhere from two bucks to two million. So if you hit for say 20 dollars, it's a nice thing. Not great but nice and the person who gave you the ticket wouldn't expect anything in return. That "glad you won but I don't expect anything back" attitude is probably good for up to a couple hundred bucks. But if you hit the grand prize and win thousands or hundred of thousands then you best believe the person who bought the ticket for you will be expecting you to break them off something for it. But you're not obligated to give them anything.

No, really, you're not. But before you know it the hurt feelings and lawsuits start flying and you've made an enemy for life all because you messed up and beat the odds. But the chance of that happening is 120,000 to 1. And that's what the gift giver is secretly banking on. Because anyone in their right mind would be pissed to find out they gave away a winning ticket they could have easily played themselves.

So if you ever get scratch tickets for a gift, holiday or otherwise, realize that the person who gave it too you is doing so banking on your failure...the bastards. And if by any chance you actually happen to win do NOT share the big prize with them because that'll teach the douche-bags to play with your emotions in such a cavalier manner.

Lindsay Lohan spreads it for Playboy..

We knew it was going to come to this eventually after Lindsay was busted for the fifth time. Posing for Playboy is a sign of one of two things... A step up for a struggling newcomer or the last gasp at attention for a person struggling to keep their career alive.

And boy is Lindsay struggling.

There are a couple of issues I have with this spread.
1. Lohan is pretty much past her prime.
2. The Marilyn Monroe thing is all wrong for her.

I liked the younger (although she's still in her twenties) thicker Lindsay Lohan. The Mean Girls Lindsay who looked healthy and relatively drug free.

This Lindsay had it going on. The legs and boobs that defied gravity. The red hair and freckles. Lohan was firing on all cylinders in this period of her life. Now she's literally a shadow of her former self.

And the choice to go with the Marilyn Monroe look is wrongheaded. She's not in the vein of the original blonde bombshell. Lindsay is in the vein of Ann Margret, no slouch in her own right. And it was no coincidence that her earlier photo spreads capitalized on the resemblance.

But after years of partying and drugging, its taken a toll on the once promising film star. Physically its left her gaunt, pale and skinny. While she's not as bad as she used to look a few years ago she's no longer the thicker sexier Lindsay that we all were watching out for. Before, her face was fuller now she just looks older and not in that graceful mature way and she's using a ton of make up to hide it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Playboy purposefully leaked the photos. Lohan is a has-been on her way to obscurity. This is a typical Playboy spread and I wouldn't imagine sales would be that much higher than on a regular day. If she had done this kind of thing after Mean Girls then it would have been something. But then again she wouldn't have had too. Which is why this reeks of desperation more than anything else. She's in and out of jail and court rooms, Can't get a film gig and has lost much respect in the industry. She may as well show her ass to make some cash now.

The Google+ Circles Love Story commercial is f*cked up, here's how...

Here is a commercial that shows a relationship that's a complete ratfuck*.

First we see Kyle who goes all in apparently from the first meeting with Lisa. He puts her in the "Love of My Life" circle from the jump. No ambiguity here. Kyle is in love with Lisa. We're done with Kyle now, he and we are just waiting for Lisa to come to the same conclusion.

Lisa on the other hand, none too impressed with our young hero, puts Kyle in the "Creepers" circle and she has a lot of them. Even a girl is in there going by the profile pics. Apparently a lot of people creep Lisa the hell out. Yet she stays in contact with them anyway. Interesting.

Then she decides to move him from the Creepers circle to her "Book Club" circle. What probably happened was Kyle saw in her hand bag a book she was reading, ran to the book store and read the inside flap of it then pretended he read the same book. "Oh my God! You're reading that too?!? I just finished it..." yeah Kyle we know the deal.

Then she moves him from there to the "Guys With Cars" circle which has got to be one of the most superficial circles I've ever seen. Where's the "Guys With 12 inches" circle or "Guys who make over 100k a year" circle? So now we see that Kyle is basically in the friend-zone. Which is a horrible place to be for guys attracted to or in love with a girl. You get all of the responsibilities of a boyfriend but none of the benefits. You gotta listen to her stories no matter how inane, feign interest in whatever activities she likes no matter how mindbogglingly boring it is to you and schlep her non-car having ass to and from places whenever she doesn't feel like taking the bus. Basically he's become her personal valet. We've got to be at least three months into this "relationship" and I guarantee you Kyle hasn't even gotten to first base yet.

She then moves him from the car circle to the "Ski House". This makes sense because we know that the only way she could go on the trip in the first place is if Kyle drove her. There isn't one ski house/lodge that isn't at least a 60 to 90 minute drive away. And they must have been the only two in the car so there was ample bonding time going there and back. There's always a lot of drinking and drunken behavior at ski houses and Lisa is most likely a horny drunk so this where Kyle probably got some action. Maybe a hand-job in the Jacuzzi or a BJ after he walks her tipsy ass back to their room. At this point we're maybe five, six months in and Kyle's patience has finally paid off. A drunken half effort blow job before she passes out on the bed but at least she touched his wee-wee and Kyle is happy about that.

Then she takes him from the ski house circle to the "Maybes" circle where there's one other guy. Waitaminnit! Who the fuck is this dude? You mean there's another guy whose been chauffeuring her ass around and reading her fucking boring books and going to dry ass Tori Amos concerts with her all this time too?! How long has this been going on?! How far did he get cause Kyle only got to third base that one time! Goddamn it! Why are we in love with this bitch!!...God, I miss her...

Then it happens. Kyle gets moved from the Maybes circle to the "Keepers" circle. HOORAY!! He did it! He finally got this bitch to consider him a KEEPER!. Wait... why is there an "s" after the word? Why is keepers plural?! It's as if she's leaving room for more than one. The circle is titled KeeperS not Keeper. So there's the possibility that there could be more than one at some point. Meanwhile Kyle's ultimate circle is called LOVE OF MY LIFE...not the LoveS of my life. For Kyle this shit's forever, for Lisa, hey if someone comes along with a better car and more interesting book for her book club then anything's possible.

My prediction for how they end up:

Kyle proposes to her at the ski house in front of all their mutual friends (well mostly her friends). Lisa accepts and the two get married soon after. Six months into the marriage, Lisa has affair with a coworker who went from Creepers to Book Club to Maybes in just three weeks. After a particularly bad argument with Kyle and a pretty hot sex session with the co worker she moves Brad (the coworker) to the Keepers circle and puts Kyle in the Assholes circle (that's where the other Maybes guy is by the way). They divorce before their first anniversary.

And they lived ever after...Thank you Google for helping to tear Kyle's heart out.

Former Penn State receiver and running back Rich Mauti organized what he hopes will be one of the largest gatherings of former Nittany Lions players to stand on the sideline ever, in an effort to show support for their embattled program.

Mauti sent emails to more than 800 former Nittany Lions and asked them to attend 12th-ranked Penn State's home finale against No. 19 Nebraska on Saturday. He wants players who took pride in wearing the school's classic blue-and-white uniforms, and fondly represented their university years after they played their final down, to return their thanks to a program -- not just former coach Joe Paterno -- that gave them so much.

By midweek, Mauti said about 75 players had agreed to attend.
"It's for the kids that have to go out there on Saturday," said Mauti, who played under Paterno from 1974 to 1976 and went on to play in the NFL. "It's a show of support for that. It's not going to be banners and flags and bands. It's going to be the Penn State Way. It's going to be our presence. Hopefully, we get enough guys there that will mean something."
Mauti emphasized he's not forgetting or minimizing the scandal and possible cover-up centered on former defensive coordiator and one-time head coach heir apparent Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno and university president Graham Spanier were fired Wednesday in the fallout of a shocking grand jury report alleging repeated, illicit contact between Sandusky and boys as young as 10.
"I'm not condoning any activities that have been alleged. That's not the purpose," Mauti said. "I'm trying to get everyone that has been through that program, that has had a positive experience, to support the kids and the program and the school at this juncture."
Former Penn State linebacker Buddy Tesner said he will be there to watch a game between two teams jostling for a Big Ten divisional title. Tesner played from 1971 to 1975 and went on to found the Football Letterman's Club.

"I think it's a great idea to rally the troops to support the team as much as anyone else," Tesner said. "At the same time, we're being very careful to make sure that we respect and understand the families that have been affected by all this. We're not making a statement of innocence or guilt."
No, but another former Nittany Lion said he hasn't forgotten Sandusky, even as the former assistant coach stands accused of having sex with young boys.
Sam Stellatella, a three-position player in the 1950s, has donated money to Sandusky's defense and urged other former players to do the same.
"I told him he's going to need a million dollars to defend himself," the 73-year-old Stellatella said. "He called me back and said, 'What am I going to do with this money?' I said, 'Use it for your lawyer because you're going to need it.' "

Stellatella sent Sandusky $100. He wrote personal letters to other members of the 1959 Liberty Bowl team that defeated a Bear Bryant-coached Alabama team and asked they also donate. He does not know how much money was raised.

"I know some of the guys sent money," Stellatella told The Associated Press. "Here's the thing, these are horrendous charges against him. But he's still entitled to his day in court. Everybody's prejudged him. He's done horrendous damage to Paterno and (athletic director Tim) Curley and the football program. I don't listen to the news and I don't read the reports of what he did because I would get too upset.

"But he's still entitled to his day in court."

That's a lone stance among a group of players who have been quick to distance themselves from Sandusky.
Brad Benson, a former Penn State offensive lineman who won a Super Bowl with the New York Giants, was not invited to attend the game. He said he wouldn't go anyway -- and had no problem with his fellow former Nittany Lions presenting a unified front -- as long as they remembered the true victims of this case.

"I sure wouldn't want it be a show of solidarity for Joe," he said.

Benson spoke in anger about Paterno's actions and, more troubling, the reaction of unruly students who toppled a television news van, rioted and attempted arson after a peaceful demonstration Wednesday night turned ugly.

"There are people right now that are supporting Joe. They are rioting and doing things they shouldn't be doing," he said. "I equate these students that are rioting to the occupiers on New York City right now. They're not mature enough to understand why they're rioting. They weren't there when this happened. What are they protesting? They're protesting that someone with a tremendous responsibility failed to fulfill his moral responsibility, and other people failed as well."

Sources told ESPN that as a way to possibly honor Paterno, some current Penn State players have discussed bringing a game ball to the fired coach's house if the team defeats Nebraska.

First of all the game should have been canceled. But since the university isn't going to turn down money (its only molested kids for cryin' out loud) the least they should do is play the damn game and just go home. What they definitely should not do is award Joe Paterno with the game ball should the team win. Paterno forfeited any displays of respect and gratitude for his service to the school when he neglected to call the police upon hearing about the incident and further enabled Sandusky by allowing him to stay with the team and around that campus. At the end of the day he's just a football coach and if the school is serious about rehabbing their image and finding some kind of closure then they, the students, the team, and the alumni need to cut ties with the man who enabled a child rapist. Otherwise the rally held tonight was just a visual display of damage control for a school that's keenly aware of its image in the last few days and not a genuine display of concern and sorrow for the victims. To thank Paterno for his service to the school and community knowing that in the most important moment of his life, he did the bare minimum required of him as a human being is a slap in the face to the molested children.

As for Mike McQueary the over six foot 200+ "man" who witnessed Sandusky sodomizing a boy in the shower in 2002 and not stomp a mud-hole in the pervert right then and there but he didn't even report it until the next fucking day, for the first time I now understand the concept of harikiri. McQueary just needs to kill himself and I'm not being facetious or sarcastic. I don't see how he could witness something like that and not do anything at that moment and then live with himself for all this time after it. Not only will he not get jail time but he won't get fired because he's being treated as a whistleblower.

Asked if McQueary would be fired, Erickson said "there are complexities to that issue that I am not prepared to go into at this point."
In forums online, and in comments on other websites, some have indeed called for McQueary to be ousted, but the assistant coach could be protected as a whistleblower.
Gerald J. Williams, a partner at a Philadelphia law firm, said Pennsylvania law is broad in protecting a person who reports wrongdoing, as long as that person is part of a governmental or quasi-governmental institution, such as Penn State.
Asked if McQueary was protected by whistleblower status, trustee Boyd Wolff said Friday after a board meeting, "He's a witness. He's different from the others, so he has to be treated differently."

A Penn State graduate and State College native, McQueary also played for Paterno. He was the starting quarterback of the 1997 team that finished 9-3. McQueary joined the staff as a graduate assistant in 2000 -- the season after Sandusky retired -- and moved on to become receivers coach and recruiting coordinator in 2004. source

Some whistleblower. That's why I say he needs to do the honorable thing and put himself down because not only has he not been punished, he's been rewarded since that incident with promotions and now protected. The head coach gets fired while he keeps his job because of "complexities"? The whole thing stinks to high heaven and as the investigations get deeper a lot more people are going to get exposed and we're going to find out more about those closest to the crimes, e.g. Saint Paterno and crew. Which is why he lawyered up today. Interesting how thorough he is to cover his own ass when the shit hits the fan.

If Penn State wins the game and those players present Paterno with the game ball it will prove that all of the ire and emotion on that campus really is about football and the program than the children who were victimized.

The Penn Sate Rioters need to grow the hell up!

As thousands of students crowded the streets around the Penn State campus on Wednesday night, protesting the University’s decision to fire beloved football coach Joe Paterno, the mob quickly chose a common enemy: the media.

Nearly 100 members of the media were at the Penn Stater Conference Hotel covering the board of trustees’ announcement when word quickly spread of a student demonstration developing nearby.

Following the press conference, local reporters as well as news crews in from Pittsburgh and elsewhere rushed to downtown State College, where a growing mob of students had gathered. And things quickly turned ugly.

“At first, the students were just milling about peacefully, but, as time went on, the crowd grew more unruly and more destructive,” WPXI‘s Courtney Brennan told TVSpy today via email. “I don’t know why, but the crowd’s anger over the firing of Paterno…quickly turned into hatred of the media.”

A group of demonstrators teamed up to tip over a WTAJ news van, escalating the protest to a full-blown riot and sending journalists running for safety.

After the WTAJ van was tipped, protestors targeted other satellite trucks parked in the area and began throwing things at nearby reporters and photographers.

“Students kept shouting threats at us and kept saying they were going to tip our satellite truck next,” Brennan recalls. “My photographer, Mike Drewecki, was pelted with bottles, rocks, mud and other objects.”

“INSANE,” WJAC reporter Brittany Boyer tweeted last night, describing the scene in downtown State College. “Students are blaming media for Joe Pa’s firing. We were chased downtown and had to drive wrong way on 1way street. THAT bad.”

“This is not ‘news exaggeration,’” WTAE sports anchor John Meyer tweeted last night while covering the student unrest. “We witnessed a riot tonight on College Ave.”

Although a handful of stations had their equipment damaged in the riot, there were no major injuries to report.

“Going to Penn State and seeing riots in the past, I thought I was prepared,” Boyer told TVSpy this afternoon via email, following a 24-hour shift. “But I could not believe all the blame and focus on the media. There were multiple times I was concerned about our safety. I kept telling our other reporter it felt like we were reporting in another country. You never expect to be concerned about your safety and students wanting to harm you or your car so it was something I never experienced before.”

Brennan summed up how the media navigated the hostile situation when she tweeted to a colleague early Thursday morning, “It’s in our blood, babe…we can handle ourselves in this kind of stuff.”

there is nothing to smile about.

In the not so distant future all of those people are going to look back and see that they were wrong. I'm not much of a football fan but this is way beyond football and any accomplishments Joe Paterno has achieved over his decades long career as coach of the Nittany Lions. No matter you figure it, the bottom line is he and those under and above him at that college failed to do the human thing in not involving the police immediately when allegations of child molestation was discovered in their midst. This issue is pretty black and white either you're on the side of the victims or not. Any concerns about how Paterno should end his career or who's coaching what should be left out of the equation. Paterno failed in doing his duty as a human being period. All of those involved failed. There shouldn't even be a debate about this.

There are some students who feel that Paterno being fired over the phone wasn't handled professionally. Fuck that! Paterno didn't handle reporting a child molestation correctly (hint 1: YOU CALL THE FUCKING POLICE FIRST!) if anything all Paterno most likely did when he was told about the incident was make a phone call. If I had my way, he wouldn't have gotten that much. I would have thrown a brick covered in shit through his living room window with a note attached: GET THE FUCK OUT YOU COWARD! Sincerely, School Administration.

The riot that broke out on Penn State's campus shows that there is an unhealthy and realistic attachment to the football program and its head staff, particularly Paterno. Its fucking football people, no one is curing cancer or ending hunger. There was and is nothing that man achieved in his life that's more important than safeguarding children's well being and lives and he among others failed to do just that. The Penn State Rioters need to grow the hell up and get a clue about whats really important in life.

Joe Frazier - Philadelphia's True Champ

I find it incredible that Sylvester Stallone can be honored in the Boxing Hall of Fame for creating the fictitious perpetual underdog Rocky and Philadelphia celebrates that achievement with him but a real boxing legend who has represented Philadelphia honorably for decades doesn't get the same treatment. What I'm talking about specifically is that there is no statue immortalizing the boxing champ who floored Muhammad Ali.

Joe Frazier was a true American Dream come from nothing and work your way up story if there ever was one. Stallone said that people accept Balboa as authentic, they should parts of Rocky's character are based on Frazier's life: Frazier eventually took the Greyhound bus, "the dog", from the South to Harlem. He ended up working in a Philadelphia slaughterhouse. "I was the drain man. My job was to make sure the blood went down the drain. But sometimes, early in the morning, I'd go down that long rail of meat and work on my punching. That's how [Sylvester] Stallone got the same idea for Rocky - just like he used the story about me training by running up the steps of the museum in Philly. But he never paid me for none of my past. I only got paid for a walk-on part. Rocky is a sad story for me."

Frazier has not only represented Philadelphia in champion fashion but the whole damn country as well. He was the only boxer to win a gold medal in the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Granted Joe Frazier wasn't as outspoken politically or charismatic as Muhammad Ali but revisionist history would have you believe that Ali was always beloved and sainted. The reality is Ali was hated by most and seen as arrogant and conceited by those who didn't despise him (my mother couldn't stand Ali's arrogance and constantly referred to him as Cassius Clay up until the mid 80s). Joe Frazier chose to not be outwardly political and for that he was cast not only as an opponent to Ali but as a villain. Their clash wasn't just as athletes but as representatives of opposing forces in a socio-political battle. To root for Muhammad Ali was to side with the "People". And if Ali was for the people then Joe Frazier obviously had to be for the "Man", the "Old Boy Network. And that's where, I think, things went in another direction for Smokin' Joe.

A combination of lack of self promotion, naively believing that good hard work would be appreciated and recognized and racism (how much or little of a factor it plays is debatable but its in there somewhere) seems to be responsible for the marked lack of recognition of the work and representation Frazier has done for the city of Philadelphia. Unfortunately its too late to honor Frazier in life but the city can still correct its oversight by commissioning a statue dedicated to the man who showed more love for his city and country than it showed him.

I was watching the Today Show a couple weeks back and glanced at the TV to see something that looked incredible. Al Roker and Natalie Morales along with two men were damn near dwarfed by Savannah Guthrie.

Just look at the top picture, she literally stands head and shoulders above everyone else. At first I thought it was an optical illusion, maybe Savannah was standing closer to the camera or something like that. No, she's just a big chick. Either that or Al and Natalie are midgets.

You see it again in this picture. Granted she's in heels in both pictures but you can see that even if she were flatfooted, she would still be half a head taller than Roker and just slightly taller than Matt Lauer.

Y'know, the older I get the more I find myself appreciating women's footwear more and more. And boy do I appreciate nice boots on a chick.

Even sitting down Savannah towers over them. I have to admit that Guthrie carries herself very well. On the show she's fun and personable and I read that she has separated from her husband in the last year so she's available.

An 18-year-old Minnesota woman has been arrested in connection to a residential burglary, accused of sneaking into her neighbor's house through the doggie door. The woman has blamed her actions on debt and an addiction to pornography, Anoka County sheriff's spokesman Paul Sommer told The Huffington Post.

Amanda Rose Owens of East Bethel, a city located about 30 miles north of Minneapolis, was charged on Wednesday with second-degree burglary. If convicted, she could face up to 10 years in jail and a $20,000 fine.

According to Sommer, Owens' neighbor, Darin Paul Pake, 44, contacted police on October 3 and reported that a burglary had taken place at his residence on Earskin Street Northeast in East Bethel. Pake told police that a camera, a briefcase and a jar of money were missing.

Pake said that he had been noticing that, sporadically, belongings were missing and he had installed a surveillance camera in an attempt to capture the culprit on film. It worked. Pake showed detectives footage of Owens, a neighbor and babysitter he had once used, entering his home through a doggie door. The video captures Owens rummaging through Pake's possessions and, apparently after working up a thirst, grabbing a Red Bull energy drink from his refrigerator, police said.

According to the criminal complaint, Owens confessed and said she entered Pake's home on three separate occasions last week. In a post-Miranda statement, Owens further admitted that she took a camera and hid it in her bedroom.
"The defendant stated she was going to pawn it for money. The defendant admitted she stole the jar of money. The defendant stated she is addicted to pornography and purchased 20 to 30 DVDs and owed money. That's why she burglarized Mr. Pake's home, in an attempt to get items to pawn for cash," the criminal complaint reads.

Owens is being held at the Anoka County Jail.

Obama shows intensity at the CBC dinner. But can he sustain it?

Last night the President spoke at the annual awards dinner of the Congressional Black Caucus in DC. And the speech was both witty and fiery at many points. Obama is good at this kind of thing, the speech ended with a intense oratory in which he urged the audience and members of the Congressional Black Caucus to continue in the tradition of the Civil Rights Movements and "press on" through trials and tribulation.

But one can only hope that the President can sustain the fire he has lit. The speech was delivered with the vim and vigor that was reminiscent of 2008 candidate Senator Obama. That was the Obama who captured the party's imagination and hopes and won the presidency by seeming to embody the essence of change and hope. We just knew Senator Obama was a fighter who would stand up against the bullshit of the old guard Washington ways.

President Obama on the other hand, while accomplishing a hell of a lot over three years, hasn't been as confrontational as his rhetoric would suggest. Obama's leadership style has left his supporters and base very frustrated. The CBC and a growing number of Black supporters have been getting more and more angry at the lack of discernible progress for the Black community especially in employment. Members of the CBC and the Black elite have spoken out about the President's lack of attention in helping to alleviate the condition. But the grumblings haven't just been coming from Blacks but across the spectrum of Obama's base. What they want is for the President to do just what he espoused in his speech last night. Or more specifically to show the fire and emotion he had at the end of that speech.

The "no drama Obama" cool the President has exhibited throughout his political career can cut both ways for him. On the one hand in most crisis issues it makes him look very in command and control. In handling natural disaster recoveries and during the capture and killing Osama bin Laden, Obama looked very much in control. But during issues like direct negotiations with congress particularly with the GOP controlled House of Representatives, Obama's cool detached demeanor comes off more like fear and capitulation. Particularly when he's giving concessions early in negotiations. It's at this point where his supporters want to see their president show the same emotion and engagement like he did in that speech.

The optics of the presidency is almost as important as what he actually does. People want to see involvement and animation from their leaders. There's a reason why they call it the bully pulpit. The flashes of emotion and charge that Obama has shown in the last three weeks is something that he should have sustained over the course of his presidency. His approval ratings would probably be a bit better today if he had even with unemployment as high as it is. As it stands a lot of Obama's 2008 donors are slow to contribute to his reelection today due in large part to the lack of engagement and confrontation in his negotiations. Obama's governing style is to delegate authority and let the people charged with the hands on dealing with an issue do their job. Thats how he handled health care reform (allowing the various committees to draft their version), Financial reform, the Gulf oil crisis and various other issues. That in a grand sense is what a president should do in normal world.

Unfortunately, thats not the world we live in. Obama keeps making the mistake of treating and trusting congress to act in the best interest of the country instead of their party and lobbyists. A problem needs to be solved, the various committees and groups work out solutions, the best solution or compromise is chosen and things get better by an appreciable factor. Again, that's not the world we live in. The GOP have a mandate to refuse to work with the President, conservative democrats have their own agenda and everyone else just want the President to make it happen regardless of what it is. Obama's lack of hands on leadership has made him appear weak even as he's made strides forward. At this point, Obama is going to have to be more proactive. The jobs bill is a good start but unfortunately the timing of it makes the move appear very calculated rather than genuine.

The jobs bill Obama proposed is something he should have done right after signing the health care reform bill back in 2009. He would have been in a much better position to expose the obstinate behavior of the Republicans by their refusal to work with the President to get Americans back to work. A strategy that would have been extremely effective going into the mid-term elections. If the President ends up with only one term, the problems in his administration will be traced back to missed opportunities to stand up to the opposition in Congress. Telling the CBC to stop complaining and be prepared to get to work is fine and dandy. It's great to see that raw emotion and intensity. Hopefully the President will sustain that attitude for the rest of his first term and through the second.

Rick Santorum illustrates why we cannot have a republican President...at least for now

Ok, its clear that Santorum and the republicans hate gays but his answer here and the wording is straight out of 1943. Why do they always keep saying we're going to "take it back"? Take what back to where? Santorum called the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell a "social experiment". That term raised the hair on the back of my neck. Since Santorum and the rest of his ilk on that stage want to turn back the clock hows about we just take back desegregation in the military and hell while we're at it lets take back women's right to vote as well. Because both those things were called social experiments too.

Then we'll have what Santorum has always wanted. A military stocked with nothing but straight white males who all sleep together, shower together and when they're bored play "innocent" pranks on each other like stick a carrot up a guy's ass while he sleeps, shave his head bald and write "I suck cock!" on his forehead in indelible ink. Because stuff like that isn't gay at all. Actually it isn't because homosexuals wouldn't do some ignorant/dumbshit like that.

And this is why this country doesn't need a batshit Republican president. Not from this crew, especially now. All I keep hearing is how they're going to repeal this and repeal that but never how what they're going to replace it with. Everyone on both sides of the aisle agrees that the health care system as it stood before the reform was intolerable. Back in '93 when the Clintons tried to enact reform, the republicans countered with their own plan. After successfully killing the effort led by Hillary Clinton, the GOP's alternative just faded away as well. Even after gaining control of both houses and the Oval Office, somehow the plan and need to reform health care never came back on the table. The only time it did was during another democratic President's term and the plan he used was the republican's.

Not being able to kill it again this time the GOP refused to participate in its drafting and once passed they vow to repeal it. But this time there is no viable Republican alternative. And no one on the right is even trying to create one. Let's just take it away. And that's the sentiment from all of them. Yes, I understand that right now a few of them are tacking not just to the right but to the extreme right to get past the primary. But in this political climate there doesn't seem to be a moderate republican middle. How can a person say and pledge (yes, they've signed a number of written agreements holding them to their bat-shitness) all that bullshit then try to tack to the center in the general election and still look credible?

The extreme right (and that includes the Tea party) have fully highjacked the party and the primaries and in doing so crippled their more reasonable candidates. So far what has dominated the republican debates have been social issues (I don't know how one can be gay and republican). For a group that keeps screaming about the need for smaller government, they sure don't mind government getting into people bedrooms. This group of Republican candidates have no answers for getting us out of this huge economic ditch. All they have is tax cuts and repeal demands. And that's not going to cut it at all.

Mayweather KOs Ortiz but was it a cheap shot??

That didn't last long. Knock out in the 4th round but was it a fair knock out?

At first I was inclined to say that Floyd did do a cheap shot and has no honor in the ring because Ortiz was clearly not ready to fight. But that was all negated by the intentional headbutt Ortiz did earlier in the round. Because of that and the point deduction, Ortiz spent most of the time after the foul apologizing to Mayweather. After the referee deducted the point he brought both fighters together and instructed them to continue. Still apologetic, Ortiz said he was sorry one more time with his hands down. Seeing his opportunity, Mayweather lit into Ortiz with a one two combination that flattened his opponent completely.

The after fight interview was all excuses by both fighters and a rant by Mayweather on commentator Larry Merchant that was more WWE than WBC.

Mind you Floyd was winning the fight and dominating up to this point. But the most important rule in boxing is to protect yourself at all times.

I say, Floyd hit his opponent when he was unprepared but was within his rights to do so because it was during time in and considering the flagrant foul by Victor.

But it smells cheap.

New Biography Claims Sarah Palin Had A One-Night Stand With Glen Rice In 1987

The National Enquirer grabbed some details from the upcoming Joe McGinniss Sarah Palin book, and this chunk is too delightful not to share with you immediately. Apparently Palin had a fling with former Heat/Hornet/Laker Glen Rice while he was in college and while she was a sports reporter in Alaska, all the way back in 1987. Rice confirms it in the book.

In the book, which will be published on September 20th, McGinniss claims Sarah had a steamy interracial hookup with basketball stud Glen Rice less than a year before she eloped with her husband Todd.
Sarah hooked up with the NBA great, then a 6-foot-8 junior at the University of Michigan when he was playing in a college basketball tournament in Alaska in 1987, the book says. At the time, Sarah, just out of college, was working as a sports reporter for the Anchorage TV station KTUU.
A publishing source told The ENQUIRER that McGinniss claims Sarah had a "fetish" for black men at the time and he quotes a friend as saying Sarah had "hauled (Rice's) ass down."

Maybe I'll have to rethink my stance on Palin...lol. This actually highlights the change she made after she was tapped for the veep position in '08. Before that Palin was a common sense open minded person who actually did very well as governor of Alaska. She enjoy 80% approval rating and worked across party lines to get things done for her state. So her being open minded enough to have an interracial fling in her youth falls in line with that. But Sarah Palin after 2008, the pitbull with lipstick whose only response to anything coming from anyone who isn't a social conservative hardliner is a hardy "fuck you". The Sarah Palin who mocks anything that comes from across the aisle, its hard to imagine that Sarah Palin even thinking about kissing a black man much less anything else. Which is why this story is blowing up on the net.

I wonder how this will play in her not a presidential/attention-whore campaign tour? I get the feeling a good number of her fanbase wouldn't be so approving of such behavior. What September 11, 2001 felt like...

I remember I was on the bus going to work, even though I had a car, parking in town was an expensive bitch. There was a woman sitting next to me talking on her cell phone. I could overhear her part of the conversation and it sounded like she was talking about a movie but I couldn't remember if I saw the trailer for it. A plane crashed into the World Trade Center? Is that a new Bruce Willis flick? Then she said "You heard they got the Pentagon, right?" At this point I knew this had to be a movie. The only way the Pentagon could be attacked is if we're at war with another country. And as far as I knew no country in their right mind would do that, not even crazy ass North Korea.

Getting to my stop in Center City in Philadelphia, I stepped off the bus and while walking to my job, I noticed everyone had an "oh shit" look on their face. It wasn't until I got to the office that I saw everyone crowded around a couple of TVs in the place. The World Trade Center Buildings were on fire. The lady on the bus wasn't talking about a movie but suddenly I felt like I was in one. Everyone stood stock still and watched as the buildings burned and the news reporters tried to make sense of what was happening. The word terrorist kept being repeated. And it was clear that it was a terror attack. The precision, the coordination all pointed to an unconventional enemy. But it was still surreal to me. That is until I picked up the phone to call home to see if my mother was watching and there was a busy signal.

I don't mean a busy signal after I dialed her number, I mean when I picked up the phone and put it to my ear there was a busy signal. The lines where so busy there wasn't even a dial tone. Now the situation was getting real to me. Soon there was a buzz in the room about what happened and what could be next. If New York got hit and DC, could this be the beginning wave of a larger coordinated attack? What other major cities are on the target list? Suddenly being in a tall building didn't feel so safe. The lines cleared enough so that I could get through to mom and my brother. Both were stunned silent as well. Mom urged me to come home and hearing the concern in her voice coupled with my growing fear, I agreed. I don't remember if our office manager ever made an official announcement, I just remember everyone moving toward the exits kind of in a zombie like fashion. Stepping outside of the building onto JFK Boulevard, I could see people looking up at the skies as if they were expecting to see another plane hit a skyscraper in our city.

My brother came to pick me up and we discussed the events and what it all meant on the way home. Later that evening, I got a call from my supervisor asking me to check on something in the office. Since I had a car and lived closer to the office than anyone else, I agreed to do it. Plus I was curious to see how the city was doing this night. The airlines were shut down and in my neighborhood it was real quiet. Which was just eerie. Center City was a ghost town. I had never seen that before. Ever. Even when I was hanging out late at night, 2, 3, 4 in the morning there was always people and vehicles on the street. Trucks and trains, buses and cabs, in a way, I always took some level of comfort in hearing the sounds of the city. That night there was no one on the streets. Nothing moved. Going into the city it seemed like I was the only person other than official authorities to even travel into town that night. All I could see were police cars slowly criss-crossing the intersections. It was the most bizarre thing I ever witnessed. It felt like the whole country had been punched in the face and was still reeling from it. That night when I went to bed, it was the quietest most still night I ever experienced.

When I was a kid, I would hear my parents and grand parents talk and reminisce about the major events and defining moments of their generation. I would listen to stories about Pearl Harbor, MLK and JFK's assassinations, WW2, the Cuban Missile Crisis and it all sounded so exciting, the stuff I read about in history books they actually witnessed those moments. It seemed so cool to hear the tales. And I wondered if I would ever have a story like that. And now that I have, I finally understand what they felt and how they dealt with it and that its not cool. It was just scary and fucked up and it stayed that way for a long time after. For them and for me. I hate the idea that some people in the younger generation who are listening to our stories about 3000 people dying in such a senseless manner is exciting, like I thought when I was their age. I hate the idea that we'll romanticize that event and moment just like we did with WW2 and Pearl Harbor.

We should never forget nor embellish or allow it to be embellished to future generations what happened and how it affected us.
