Eclectic: some days I feel like wearing a rainbow shirt and celebrating my inner child, others I feel like wearing a wool skirt and celebrating my inner librarian.

Why we spotted her:

Caroline’s mix of textured skirt and girly, lacy top makes the look refined and fun all at once. The neutral flats help draw attention to her long legs with the high-waisted skirt lengthening her already fabulous figure. Caroline also seems to be a master of being cute on a budget by frequenting clothing swaps and the Salvation Army for her duds, keeping her outfit low cost yet still chic. The color of the entire ensemble keeps everything relaxed–perfect for a chill spring day!

Grace’s refreshingly colorful plum-pumpkin palette + adorb polka dot stockings perfectly exude a nostalgia-inducing 40s sophistication. She also changes it up  with her impeccable layering — by matching the length of her jacket with the dress, she creates a more streamlined silhouette, elongating her look. I love to look well put together, but I also love to look grungy–NOT pajamas or sweats, but more like a simple shirt with a cardigan and sneakers. But I’m also influenced by my sisters: they’re full on punks with mohawks, and bihawks and studs and patches. I don’t feel comfortable wearing those clothes; I simply take elements that I like. So as you can see, my style is everywhere, but overall I just like what I like.

Michael describes it best: he really knows how to smooth the edges of a tough aesthetic. The pieces of this look are fitted, balanced, and composited with borderline surgical precision, making its punk elements feel all the more mischievous. I am damn proud to be an NYU Alum. And this is one of the many reasons why.

As some of you might have seen/read last week, a gaggle of gorgeous, protesting NYU models stormed Gould Plaza armed with fabulous clothes, veils, and boombox. Their message? “Don’t Wear Clothes. Wear Art,” “Save Style,” and come to EXPO’s Fashion Show happening tomorrow.

Why you have to be there:

1. “It’s part fashion show part huge dance performance with flashing lights and strobes.” - from my darling friend Kaitlin Prince. No further elaboration needed.

2. You could be street-spotted next! Street-Spotted scouters will be stickering the best-dressed audience members as they walk in. Those of you who are stickered will have the chance to be featured on Street-Spotted. Just email me, caroline@street-spotted.com, if you’re stickered.

3. Crazy line-up and goodie bags. Featured lines include Prada, Nicole Miller, -AA+, Katie Gallagher, and gowns from Marc Jacobs sponsored by Gilt Groupe (nuts). These and other sponsors will be stuffing your gift bags, woot!

Sometimes there’s nothing better than simplicity. Jenna’s look proves the old fashion law of “less is more” by letting one item, her angular, cape-shaped jacket, steal the show. This cropped coat looks even more voluminous paired with slim-fit pants and tall, sleek boots–and I am loving it!  Another benefit to a more minimal style? It makes a special piece of jewelry really sparkle.

My friend says I look homeless: there’s often a saftey pin holding something of my clothes up, but when I give some effort I clean up well.

I believe in sustainable design, reusing old clothes and re-purposing them through simple combinations or renovations. I’ve posted some of what I’ve done (along with other design related tidbits) on my blog.

Why we spotted her:

The neutral/vibrant, loose/fitted, and long/cropped contrasts in Molly Joy’s look is fantastically dynamic. Her poppy-colored toggle coat and ultra-warm socks make a slick black and white ensemble immediately fun and cheerful in the dead of winter. Molly’s blue, hip-slung bag adds even more interest, introducing a new facet of color. Creativity conquers the cold yet again!

A vision of true individualism, Rosie makes her jeans-and-sweater combo her own with some great stand-out pieces. The spotted jacket and bright red boots add the perfect dose of color and pattern to her look, while her cap looks fresh in a sea of trappers and beanies. Sometimes a good flea market and a keen eye is all it takes to create any style you want: it’s pretty astounding how Native American Pin-Up completely makes sense here!

I like to mix high end with vintage and up and coming designers. Color, pattern and quality are essential. Comfort might even be my number one priority. If something is too trendy I take a pass; I want to wear my things for a long time. Individuality is huge for me: my clothing reflects my personality and I expect it to be functional for my lifestyle.

Kimi’s look is evidence of her totally unaffected disposition. Kimi isn’t striving to fit in with the majority of young women her age who view the term “trendy” as a compliment. Getting dressed is fun, but also sometimes hard, I’m usually running late and just throw on a lot of things and hope they match. If it were more socially acceptable I’d wear a nightgown everywhere.

Why we spotted her:

Anna’s combination of warm accessories and cozy textures with the florals and military-inspired boots of the moment makes her homespun style feel very new. The look’s resistance to matching — and Anna’s shopping sources — suggest some splendidly inventive instincts are at work. It is entirely cohesive, yet uncontrived. Looks like Anna will be turning heads come rain, sleet, or snow!

I usually like to keep it pretty casual, maybe jeans, a button-up shirt and a nice blazer. But I don’t always keep it that way.

Why we spotted him:

Alfonso’s lived-in leather, structured wool, and antique plaid make for a crisp, classic look. The timelessness of the materials is completed by solid, dark-wash denim. Definition of the casual sophisticate here, Alfonso infuses a little ease into his polished style with a slight cuff of his pants and a laid-back vibe. No doubt these pieces will outlast many a spring cleaning.

How would you describe your style?

Moody…it all depends on my mood. Today I’m feeling really tired of winter and being cold all the time, so I wanted to wear something green and with flowers to remind me of Spring!

Why we spotted her:

Despite the dreary weather, Merrill chose to show her optimistic side by wearing an outfit that integrates both forecast-functional elements, as well as bright, playful pieces that add a pop of “Spring” to the mix. By wearing a blossomy underneath a dark coat, Merrill shows off just the right amount of color, and avoids looking like she’s obvlivious to the Winter weather.  Her eye-catching purse is a completely different pattern than her dress, but only a sliver of each pattern is visible, so she still looks adorable! The chunky scarf and substantial-looking boots are the perfect accessories to keep Merrill’s look grounded.
