The Advocacy for Integrity and Economic Development (AIED) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prove its unbiased stand by releasing the total number of Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs) collected in the seven polling units where supplementary elections are scheduled to hold in Osun State.

A strongly worded statement by the group reads:

“We are deeply concerned about the allegations surrounding the conduct of last Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State. While we praise the electorate for embarking on a peaceful exercise, allegations against INEC as being unbiased are too heavy to be overlooked.

“INEC is the most powerful institution in Nigeria, far more powerful than the office of the President, because it holds the key to whatever form or shape the presidency takes. It is therefore a greater threat to national security, if the commission is seen to be favourable to a particular political party or individual.

“Seeing an official of the commission on national television confessing to an offence of destroying document of the commission capable of manipulating the outcome of the election is saddening.

“While we wish to believe that the said official and his supervisor acted alone, we urge INEC to release forthwith, the details of Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVC) collected in the seven polling units in a display of transparency and fairness.

“This is of utmost importance as such move will erase any thoughts of a planned manipulation between the commission and the ruling party.”
A male applicant on Tuesday died during the Federal Road Safely Corp recruitment in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

The FRSC Sector Commander, Segun Martins confirmed the death. Sources said that he died shortly after completing a two-kilometre race. He was said to have dropped his tally and passed out.

Medics from the FRSC were said to have quickly attended to him. He was later admitted to the army clinic in the Chari Megumeiri Barracks and died about 30 minutes after his admission.
Deputy Speaker of the House of Reps, Yusuf Lasun yesterday joined the battle to ensure victory for the APC candidate Gboyega Oyetola in tomorrow’s supplementary governorship election in Osun State, where he's trailing the leading candidate, PDP's Ademola Adeleke.

The APC lost in Orolu area, which is believed to be Lasun’s stronghold. He is known to be aggrieved with APC leaders.

The supplementary election will hold in three units in the local government due to cancellation over hijacking of materials by thugs.

There are 987 registered voters in the three units.

Also allegedly joining forces with the APC is Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

The rerun will determine the winner between Oyetola and Adeleke.

Saturday’s election was declared inconclusive by INEC which ordered the supplementary election in seven polling units in four local governments – Osogbo, Orolu, Ife North and Ife South.

There are 3,498 registered voters in the polling units where the elections were cancelled due to various reasons, including hijacking of election materials, abscondment of presiding officer, disruption of election by hoodlums who were shooting sporadically, manual accreditation and over voting.

Adeleke has a marginal 353 votes advantage in the election.

Omisore hosted an APC delegation of Ekiti State Governor-elect Dr Kayode Fayemi and Dr Olu Agunloye at his home in Ile-Ife.

On Monday, he received Senate President Bokola Saraki, who came to lobby him to support the PDP.

Omisore, who left the PDP for the SDP because the PDP ticket was skewed in favour of Adeleke, declined to give Saraki his commitment.

But after his meeting with the APC team, Omisore twitted under a photograph of himself with Fayemi and Agunloye: “With @OfficialAPCNg Ekiti state governor elect @kfayemi during his visit today. #goodgovernanceinosunstate #OsunDecides2018.”

He also twitted same after his meeting with Saraki.

But in another tweet, Saraki Presidential Campaign Council spokesman Doyin Okupe said: “Omisore I’m told caved in to pressure from APC…”

This platform is yet to confirm the authenticity of these claims.
A banker, Ronke Shonde, allegedly beaten to death by her husband, Lekan, three years ago, died of severe brain injuries, a pathologist, Dr. S.S. Soyele, said yesterday.

Dr. Soyele, from the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja, conducted an autopsy on the late Mrs Shonde.

He told Justice Josephine Oyefeso of Ikeja High Court that the

autopsy showed the deceased’s brain was “heavy, swollen and filled with water.”

“The deceased died of respiratory failure, caused by cerebral edema (swollen brain), caused by a blunt force trauma to the brain,” he said.

The pathologist was testifying at the trial of Lekan Shonde for the death of his wife at their Egbeda, Lagos home in 2016.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr. Y. G. Oshoala, Soyele said it was unlikely that the deceased inflicted the injuries on herself because of the multiplicity of the injuries.

“A bruise was found on her left jaw. During autopsy, it was discovered that the deceased had black eyes (pupils) a telltale sign of brain injury.

“We opened up the body and brought out the organs. We also opened the skull to bring out the brain. Blood collection was discovered in the skull, just beneath the skin.

“The deceased’s uterus was also brought out and there was no sign of conception. We took samples from the brain in order to determine the cause of the death, which primarily was respiratory failure caused by trauma to the brain,” he said.

The pathologist, who said he and his team had conducted over 1,000 autopsies, stated that the late Mrs Shonde’s autopsy showed that she suffered injuries to her brain in the past.

“We took samples from the brain and discovered old haemorrhage (bleeding) in the brain, which suggests past trauma,” he added.

Justice Oyefeso adjourned the case till October 24.
*Says INEC removed Adeleke’s 4,387 votes.
The PDP has demanded the immediate resignation of the Chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, following what it called his alleged controlling role in the “fraudulent manipulations” that it said characterised the September 22 governorship election in Osun State.

Also, the PDP called for the resignation of the commission’s Director of Operations, Mrs Amina Zakari, who is related to President Buhari.

Zakari is in charge of the Information and Communications Technology Department, where the PDP alleged that the election results were altered to favour the APC.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, made the demands in Abuja on Tuesday at a press conference, which was held at the PDP national secretariat.

He said, “It is completely inexcusable that Prof Yakubu presides over an atrocious and compromised electoral umpire that manipulates electoral processes, doctors figures, allocates fictitious votes and subverts the will of the people in an election.

“The PDP has additional documentary evidence of how this compromised INEC, through its Operations and ICT Department, doctored results from polling centres, directly shortchanged the PDP with no fewer than 4,387 votes by slashing votes cast for the PDP at the polling centres while allocating fictitious figures to the APC.

“The PDP has facts on how INEC slashed over 1,000 votes freely cast by the people for our candidate, Senator Ademola Adeleke, in Ayedaade Local Government Area, just to reduce our votes from our legitimate 10,836 votes cast at the polling centres to 9,836 votes so as to give APC the lead with a 1,000 vote margin in the local government.

“Also, the PDP has evidence of how INEC, while collating results, directly allocated over 1,367 fictitious votes to the APC in Olorunda Local Government Area, to fraudulently shore up the APC votes to duplicitous 16,254 votes.

“This is in addition to evidence of how INEC awarded over 2,000 fictitious votes in favour of the APC in Oshogbo to push APC’s vote to 23,379 against the actual 21,479 votes scored by the defeated party.”

Ologbondiyan added that the alleged writing of results by INEC in collusion with the APC occurred in many other areas, which he said led to INEC’s ill-fated directives to its junior officials, including the one apprehended in Ayedaade, to destroy results already displayed at polling and collation centres.

He added, “It was after INEC and the APC realised that despite their manipulation of figures, our candidate still scored the highest number of votes, making him the clear winner of the election, that they decided to fraudulently apply unconstitutional grounds to declare the election inconclusive.

“From the facts available to us, INEC robbed our party of over 4,387 votes. Our actual winning margin stands at 4,740 votes against the 353 votes declared by INEC.”

Ologbondiyan said the PDP had also discovered schemes perfected by INEC to rig its planned supplementary election in favour of the APC.

“The PDP is already aware that INEC has increased the original number of voters in the affected polling centres by over 850 so as to expand its latitude to manipulate results with uncollected Permanent Voter Cards, a development, which further shows INEC’s determination to rig the election for the APC.”

He added, “While Prof. Mahmood Yakubu can no longer be trusted to conduct the 2019 general election, it is public knowledge that Mrs Amina Zakari, the INEC Director in charge of Operations and ICT, is a direct blood relation of Mr President and as such, we believe that she cannot be an impartial arbiter in an election involving her uncle."

A presidential aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has said that he wants Abba Yusuf (pictured left), his son-in-law, to succeed Abdullahi Ganduje, the incumbent governor, because Yusuf performed well when he served as a commissioner under him.

Kwankwaso said Yusuf, who was commissioner of works, discharged his role well enough and was actually behind most of the projects of his government.

The lawmaker listed the Kano Kofar Nassarawa flyover among the projects, adding that the projects designed by Yusuf were far better than the ones under Abdullahi Ganduje, his successor.

Although Ganduje served as Kwankwaso’s deputy for eight years, both men have been having a running battle.

“Today most projects being executed by Ganduje are not durable and are of low standard while heavy amounts was spent on them, but our projects which mostly were designed and executed by Abba Kabir Yusuf are today standing firm in Kano,” NAN qouted him to have said.

Kwankwaso, who spent just one hour, appealed to his supporters to resolve issues among them amicably.

“I’m in Kano to see you and say thank you for the brotherhood and progressive unity we enjoy as kwankwasiyya members. Certainly we will sit and talk on vital issues affecting us,” he said.
Nigeria risks a relapse into recession, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) issued a serious warning to the federal government yesterday.

CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele told reporters at the end of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting in Abuja that they are worried that “the exit from the recession may be under threat as the economy slowed to 1.95 percent and 1.50 percent within the first and the second quarter 2018”.

CBN raised same alarm in 2015 and by 2016 it happened.

The economy plunged into recession shortly after from end of 2016 through 2017.

Emefiele said: “The Monetary Policy Committee appraised the microeconomic environment and noted that at its July meeting, modest stability was achieved in key indicators, including inflation, exchange rate and reserves. In particular, relative stability returned to the foreign exchange market, going by a robust level of external reserves with inflation trending downward for the 18th consecutive months. These gains so far achieved appear to be under threat of reversal following the new data which provides evidence of weakening fundamentals.”

This threat to the economy, he said, comes from “rising inflation and pressure on the external reserves created by the capital flow reversal as the current challenges grow”. He noted that the inflationary measure was rebuilding, and “capital flow reversal has intensified as shown by the bearish trend in the equities market even though the exchange rate remains very stable.”

The MPC, Emefiele said, “noted that the slowdown emanated from the oil sector, with strong linkages to employment and growth in the key sectors of the economy”.

The committee urged the government to take advantage of the current rising trend in the oil prices to rebuild fiscal buffers, strengthen government finances in the medium term and reverse the current trend of decline in output growth.

Other threats to the economy, which may aggravate the onset of recession, Emefiele warned, include “the potential impact of liquidity injection from election related spending, and increase in FAAC distribution, which is rising in tandem with increase in oil receipt.”

The Committee “was concerned with the rising level of non-performing loans in the banking system, traced mainly to the oil sector and urged the banks to closely monitor and address the situation.”

Members of the MPC were concerned over the weak intermediation by the Deposit Money Banks and its adverse impact on credit expansion and investment growth by the private sector.

The MPC called on the government to fast track implementation of the 2018 budget to help jump start sustainable economic recovery and to facilitate passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill to increase contribution to the overall GDP.
A 20-year-old woman, Zulac Kabiru, has confessed to killing her eight-month-old stepdaughter, Rukaiya, to teach her co-wife how to respect “her superior”.

She killed the baby by giving her insecticide, otapiapia, to drink.

Zulac, who was arrested by the police in Niger State for the alleged killing at Danauta village in Mariga area, said she took the action because the second wife was always insulting and assaulting her.

The suspect was said to have secretly given the baby the poison, which resulted in her death.

It was gathered that the suspect and her fellow wife had not been in good terms for a long time.

Addressed reporters when she was paraded, Zulac said: “I warned my husband to desist from getting another wife but he did not listen. The second wife loved insulting and assaulting me at all times. One day, I decided to poison her eight-month-old daughter to increase her sorrow in the family so that she will learn how to respect her superiors in the family.

“Before my husband married her, and I kicked against it, we were living in peace. But when she came, she split the family. My husband gave her more attention than he gave me. Snd since then, our family has been in shambles.”

The suspect said she did not know when she carried out the act, claiming it was the work of the devil.

“It was the work of the devil. I don’t know when I did it. It is a wicked act,” she said.

Police spokesman Muhammad Abubakar, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the suspect would be arraigned in court after investigation.
Wife of the president, Aisha Buhari said on Tuesday that she had no hand in the arrest and detention of her Aide De Camp, Sani Baban-Inna.

In a statement issued on her behalf by her Director of Information, Suleiman Haruna, the wife of the President said Baban-Inna, Chief Superintendent of Police, was arrested for using his position as her ADC to dupe people.

Mrs. Buhari, who is currently on a trip with her husband to the United States, said Baba-Inna had been her ADC sine 2016, but was surprised that he had defrauded unsuspecting associates and officials “as initial investigations have shown”.

She denied ever sending any of her staff members “to collect any favours on her behalf or on behalf of her children and will never do so” and urged whoever had been allegedly defrauded by Baban-Inna to get across to him to retrieve whatever he took from them.

The statement read, “The attention of wife of the President, Dr. Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has been drawn to some media publications and releases purporting illegal detention of her Aide De Camp over allegations of fraud.

“The story as it pertains to her ADC, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Sani Baban-Inna has it that he has been detained on the orders of Her Excellency for dropping her name and defrauding unsuspecting officials and associates. She wishes to use this opportunity to refute such allegation and to state that she has no hand in his arrest and detention.”
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed workers all over the country to proceed on a nationwide warning strike with effect from Thursday.

This followed the delay in approving a new minimum wage.

General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Dr Peter Ozo-Eson, in a statement in Abuja on Tuesday, directed all industrial unions in the country and state councils to immediately begin the mobilisation of their members in readiness for the warning strike.

It read, “This is to inform you that the organised labour shall commence a nationwide warning strike in respect of the non-implementation of the National Minimum Wage effective midnight of Wednesday, September 26, 2018.

“All industrial unions and all state councils are to commence mobilisation immediately for an effective strike action nationwide. A formal notification letter will be sent later in the day.”

President Muhammadu Buhari had in November 2017, inaugurated a tripartite committee to negotiate a new national minimum wage for the country.

The government had assured workers that the committee, which began sitting in March 2018, would conclude its work by the end of this month.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, who assured the workers of a new wage by the end of the third quarter, later announced that the committee had yet to finalise its work.

He stated that the government needed more time to consult before arriving at a figure which would be discussed by the committee.

The panel subsequently adjourned indefinitely.

The development, however, angered organised labour which accused the government of delaying the process and issued a two-week ultimatum.

It threatened to embark on a strike if the government failed to recall the committee and conclude negotiation on the new minimum wage.

Though Vice President Yemi Osinbajo held a meeting with the tripartite committee last week in response to the threat, the unions appeared unimpressed.

The leadership of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State have unanimously endorsed the candidacy of Senator Godswill Akpabio for the Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District.

According to a statement by his Media Aide, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio was adopted for the 2019 elections after a long meeting of the party elders at Obong Ntak, the country home of Chief Inibehe Okorie, a senatorial aspirant.

After the meeting, Okorie told his supporters that he decided to forgo his aspiration in the interest of the party and the Senatorial District.

He extolled Senator Akpabio as an “Uncommon Senator” and said he was excited at his entry into the APC and enjoined his supporters to work for his election.

In his response, Senator Akpabio said the unanimous adoption is a confirmation that he will add value to the APC in the country.

“Those in attendance at the meeting included, former Petroleum Minister and Chairman of the State caucus of the party, Atuekong Don Etiebet, APC State Chairman, Mr Ini Okopido, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Obong Nsima, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr Udom Ekpoudom (rtd) among others."
The Governor-elect of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi on Tuesday visited the governorship candidate of the SDP, Senator Iyiola Omisore, in Ile Ife to woo him ahead of the rerun holding in seven polling units in four local government areas of Osun State on Thursday.

Fayemi, who accompanied President Buhari, on his trip to the United Nations General Assembly, was instructed to return to Nigeria to meet with Omisore in order to seek his support for the candidate of the APC, Gboyega Oyetola, in the rerun election.

Omisore was said to have received the APC delegates well and they discussed the issue of the rerun poll but the outcome of the meeting was still sketchy as of the time of filing this report.

A source close to Fayemi told The Punch that the Ekiti State Governor-elect visited the Ife-born politician and the discussion was fruitful.

The source said, “Dr Kayode Fayemi went to discuss with Senator Omisore in Ife today. The meeting is not unconnected with the rerun poll. Dr Fayeni travelled to the US with President Buhari to attend the UN General Assembly and it was Buhari that asked him to return home to hold a meeting with Omisore on the matter. One vote is very important in this election, so every vote is important and that is the reason for the visit.”

The President of the Senate, Senator Bukola Saraki, had on Monday visited Omisore for the same reason and he also said the meeting was fruitful and was confident that the PDP candidate, Ademola Adeleke, would win on Thursday.

Omisore is considered to be very important in this rerun election especially at Garage Olode in Ife South Local Government Area where his father, Oba Olajide Omisore, is the monarch.

Meanwhile, the APC has said the PDP candidate would still lose if Omisore supported Adeleke in the rerun election.

The Director of Publicity, Research and Strategy of the APC in Osun State, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, said this in a statement on Tuesday.
Networking is all about interacting with people to exchange information and develop professional or social contacts. Clearly, it is everything in the business world. From gaining job opportunities to bringing in business for your company, networking is one of the keys to success.

Jumia shares tips for networking like a pro.

Have your business cards with you all the time

You do not know whom you might meet on your itinerary, it is therefore important for you to have your business cards with you all the time. You never know when you're going to need your business cards.

Brag about your accomplishments

There's absolutely nothing wrong with bragging about your accomplishments or your company to get people interested. However, do not overdo it so that you won't appear arrogant.

Use social media

You should be on all of the major social media platforms, and you should use them often. Network with everyone in your industry that you can, and post frequently so that you stay on everyone's minds.

Network with everyone

There is no need to discriminate when you network. So, endeavour to network with everyone and do not forget to be friendly. This will make everyone remember for good reasons.

Attend Events

You can't network if you're stuck in the house or the office. Attend industry and community events so that you can meet people.

Make plans

When you hand over your business card, ensure that it results in something concrete. Tell the person to call you on a particular date or you can tell them to expect your call. And ensure you call.

The statement read;
Our attention has been drawn to a fake news currently trending alleging that the Adeleke family has rejected possibility of working with Senator Iyiola Omisore. It is a concorted lie by rejected APC and their satelite politicians.

Senator Ademola Adeleke has openly expressed his willingness for cooperation and partnership with all progressive political forces to consolidate on the victory of last Saturday.

The Governor-Elect had actually spoke with many political leaders and candidates in the last poll. It was therefore false to allege opposition to the involvement of Senator Iyiola Omisore in the push for victory tommorow.

We repeat categorically that neither the Governor-Elect nor Mrs Dupe Adeleke-Sani ever told Senate President Bukola Saraki of Adeleke’s opposition to Senator Omisore. If anything, the family was full of praise for Dr Saraki, Senator Omisore, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, Alhaji Moshood Adeoti and other leaders who have rallied round Senator Adeleke to reclaim the stolen mandate.

We call on the public and affected political leaders to ignore the report. All hands are on deck for victory and no amount of fake news will stop Osun people from compleing the liberation and redemption movement.
The President of Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN), Mr Thomas Etuh has narrated how he rebuffed an invitation by President Muhammadu Buhari to discuss the advancement of fertiliser value chain in Nigeria.

He narrated the funny conversation that ensued between him and the Chief of Staff to the President, Alhaji Abba Kyari who had called him to come for a meeting.

Etuh told NAN that when the call came from Kyari inviting him, he thought it was fraudsters, and he vehemently told him off.

He explained that he rebuffed the call many times and advised the caller to go and get a job, not knowing that the call was genuine and was going to change the lot of farmers and fertiliser producers as well as suppliers.

“One weekend, I got a call from the chief of staff to the president, Alhaji Abba Kyari that they wanted to see me. I thought it was a joke. So, I said I wasn’t interested in looking for any appointment and I dropped the phone.

“A couple of minutes later, he called back and asked if I was Thomas Etuh, I said “Yes, I am”.

“We’ll like to see you”, he said. I said “Please! I have told you I am not looking for any appointment and I can hear your voice sounding like a very elderly person. So I think you should go and get a job to do and stop this 419”, then, I banged the phone.

“So while sitting with friends, we put the number on truecaller, and behold his name came up but I never bothered.

“About an hour or two later, he put a call through again; I picked it and naturally, I apologized. He kept laughing on the phone and saying that he understands and if I can come because they want to have a meeting with me.

“Eventually, I made the appointment for the meeting and the presidency was concerned about the price of fertiliser going up and what we can do to reduce the price.

“And that discussion translated into the President setting up this committee of Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI), which FEPSAN which I lead as a body was tasked to come back with a proposal and all hands were on deck."

The defectors were led by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Abdulwasi Musah with their letters of defection read on the floor of the assembly by the Clerk of the house, Mr Paul Bankole during plenary.

Other members who defected include Mr Lukman Balogun (Labour Party to ADC), Mr Bolaji Badmus (APC to ADC), Mr Azeez Billiaminu (Accord to ADC) and Mr Ganiyu Oseni (APC to ADC).

Others are Mr. Olusegun Olaleye (APC to ADC), Mr Samson Oguntade (Accord to ADC) and Mr. Muideen Olagunju (Accord to ADC).

Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers Association of Nigeria (FEPSAN) says 18 fertiliser blending plants across the country have been revived under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI) introduced by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The President of FEPSAN, Mr Thomas Etuh, who said this in an interview with NAN in Abuja on Tuesday, stressed that the resuscitated plants were now operational.

He recalled that only six, out of the 32 fertiliser blending plants existing in the country, were functional at inception of the Buhari-administration in 2015.

“We then had six fertiliser plants working at 10 per cent capacity but with the introduction of PFI, we moved to 11 plants in the first phase and today, 18 out of the 32 plants are engaged in this programme.

“At the end of last year’s season, we closed with 12 fertiliser blending plants because WACOT Limited, in collaboration with the Edo State Government, added one plant to the 11 we had in the first phase.

“About five plants are being evaluated to meet up the standards before we enlist them, and I can also tell you that because of this programme, we have five new fertiliser blending plants being set up in the country.

“We have one each in Zamfara, Ajaokuta in Kogi, Akwa-Ibom and Funtua in Katsina State, while the one in Kaduna is at the point of inauguration.

“The plants in Ajaokuta (Kogi) and Zamfara should come live by the end of the year, while that of Funtua in Katsina State might come up by first quarter of next year (2019).

“So, I think these new five plants should be up and running by the first quarter of next year,’’ he added.

Omega Power Ministries (OPM) has admitted an 11 year old boy, who was learning roadside mechanic because he could not afford to go to school, into its free school in Port Harcourt.

OPM runs seven free schools where all fees are free, students are given free school uniforms, books, lunch and are sent abroad for excursions.

The school is open to all who pass the entrance examination irrespective of denominations or religion. It is strictly for the less privileged children in our society.

The G.O of OPM, Apostle Chibuzor Chinyere believes it is not right for pastors to use church offerings and tithes to build schools that members cannot afford.

Evans Ugoh, the Head of Imo/Abia Operations Office, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has confirmed that a pastor and his wife died in Monday’s massive flood in an Imo community.

Ugoh confirmed the incident on Tuesday in an interview with NAN in Owerri.

The flood swept away some homes and farmlands in Oguta, the headquarters of Oguta Local Government Area (LGA) of Imo.

The NEMA official who did not disclose the identities of the deceased couple blamed the incident on the alleged neglect of the agency’s early warning.

He said that the agency gave evacuation notice early enough but regretted that it was ignored by the community. Ugoh said that he led a team of NEMA officials to Oguta and Ohaji/Egbema LGAs to monitor the sea level in the wake of increasing cases of flood in the area.

“When we discovered that there was an unusual rise in the sea level, we immediately issued evacuation notice to seven communities in the area,” he said.

He said that the agency also advised the communities likely to be affected to monitor the sea regularly and report to the agency for prompt action.

The head of operations regretted that the couple died barely one week after the evacuation notice was issued.
Reacting to the incident, the Traditional Ruler of Oguta community, Eze Nani Nzeribe, told NAN that flood had been a major problem in the area.

Nzeribe said that the couple died in the flood while attempting to recover some of their farm produce.

He said, “When the flood submerged most of the farmlands and homes in the community, the pastor and his wife moved into their farm to recover some items.

“Unfortunately, before they could get to safety, their overloaded canoe capsized leading to their death."

Hon. Adeyemi Ikuforiji, a former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly has denied reports that he purchased the governorship form of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) for Governor Ambode to contest the 2019 election if the APC refuse him their ticket.

Speaking with Daily Independent, Ikuforiji who described the rumour as the handiwork of mischief makers said those spreading the lie are only trying to fan the ember of discord between him and some APC leaders on the state.

"I have rumours by some mischief makers and unscrupulous elements that I went to purchase the governorship form of ADC for Governor Ambode so he can contest the 2019 election on the platform. There is no iota of truth in that.

"Some people just want to create problem where there is none. They are doing everything to pitch me against other leaders of the party in the state. But I can assure you that they will fail,” he said.

Kayode Fayemi, governor-elect of Ekiti state, on Tuesday led some members of the APC to the residence of Iyiola Omisore, SDP candidate in Osun state governorship election.

APC's visit comes 24 hours after that of Senate President Bukola Saraki.

The PDP and APC are wooing Omisore ahead of the rerun.

The rerun will hold in seven polling units across four local government areas — Orolu, Ife north, Ife south and Osogbo.

Ife is the stronghold of Omisore.

Ademola Adeleke of the PDP had polled 254,699, while his closest challenger, Isiaka Oyetola of the APC had 254,345 votes.

Although all the 48 political parties will partake in the exercise, the contest is between Adeleke and Oyetola.

While receiving Saraki on Monday, Omisore listed the conditions under which he would work for any of the two leading parties.

He had said, “I have given my programmes to both the APC and the PDP. My programme is like this; payment of salaries and pensions. Good governance is what is important to me.
