You could be eating gourmet food from a truck as early as this summer.

Newmarket seeks two interested vendors to participate in a one-year pilot project that brings gourmet food trucks to town. The call for interested trucks has just gone out and town staff is finalizing the town properties on which the trucks will be able to operate, such as Riverwalk Commons, according to community services commissioner Ian McDougall.

The intent is to gather insight from customers, residents and truck owners and report back to council with details when the pilot is complete, he added, pointing out that the consultation would include community groups such as the BIA on Main Street.

It isn’t uncommon for town staff to launch a pilot project without formal approval from council when the intent is to gather information to determine if the programs would be permanent.

The pilot project is restricted to two trucks and whether or not it will kick off in the next few months will be determined by the number of applications the town receives. Each application will be reviewed before the final vendors are selected. The idea is to have trucks that provide something other than the traditional hot dog, fries or burgers.

Andrew and Jennifer Tedford hope to be among the vendors selected to participate.

The Newmarket residents, he a Seneca College professor and she an employee in the food manufacturing industry, have invested more than $60,000 in the truck that is now getting the final touches, including being wrapped with the truck’s name, Wickedly Sinful. The couple is boasting it will be one of Canada’s first low-carb and no sugar added gourmet food trucks.

The Tedfords purchased the former Toronto service truck and have customized it, including the addition of three fridges, food preparation stations, a double fryer, one for main dishes and the other for desserts, a double oven and grill. The truck is also self-sufficient, meaning it has its own electricity and water supplies.

“We have never owned a restaurant, we just love to cook,” she said with a shrug.

The duo has been working on menu items for years, offering them up to family and friends for taste testing. The low carb and no added sugar idea came from a cruise they were on and the desserts tasted like there was sugar in them, but there wasn’t.

“I felt like I was cheating on my diet because the cheesecake and creme brulee was so good, even without the sugar,” she said. “I don’t think people should miss out because they can’t or don’t want to eat sugar.”

The challenge is finding healthy and fresh alternatives to your favourite foods and making it taste as good as the full carb or full sugar version.

They have decided the truck will offer a rolling menu as the seasons change, allowing them to work with local farmers for ingredients.

One thing is for certain, Wickedly Sinful will have a signature taco tart to offer customers. Other ideas are being tested, such as the pulled pork dish that comes in an ice cream cone to avoid the high carbohydrates contained in buns.

“We want to offer people a little something different on the social and food front,” Mr. Tedford added.

The truck still needs to undergo a certification from fire services and an inspection by public health before they submit an application for the pilot project.

If accepted as a vendor, Wickedly Sinful will be ready to roll in a few weeks and using social media to report their location every day and what’s on the menu.

For updates, find Wickedly Sinful on Facebook, tweet them @thewickedsin or visit their soon-to-be-complete website wickedlysinful.com

For more about the pilot project or to apply, call the town at 905-895-5193.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden were honored in a black-tie dinner at the home of Swedish Ambassador Jonas Hafström and wife Eva on May 9th. Capital Party Rentals, a Classic Party Rentals company, provided tenting and numerous ornaments to the gala affair, as well as managed the event itself.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 22, 2013

Royalty is accustomed to a certain level of treatment. Certainly, the king and queen of Sweden never felt out of place while they visited the United States to celebrate their 375th anniversary of the arrival of the first Swedish to the country, then New Sweden and now Wilmington, Delaware. For the D.C. leg of the tour, Capital Party Rentals brought forth a high level of luxury to the soiree honoring the Swedish Royalty.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden were honored at a black-tie dinner in their honor in Washington, D.C. Capital Party Rentals, the D.C. division of Classic Party Rentals, created the royal feel the king and queen are accustomed to in their palace in Stockholm. The creative team behind Capital Party Rentals built a luxurious tent featuring lavish ornaments.

The Capital Party Rentals team beautified the residence of Swedish Ambassador Jonas Hafström and his wife Eva Hafström for the May 9th dinner. The prestigious gathering, which also featured Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano as an honored guest, was held in a tent at the ambassador’s residence. Guests gathered underneath a clear-top tenting, which simultaneously created an indoor and outdoor sensation and featured wrought-iron chandeliers that cast their light on the royal blue tablecloths below. Blue and white flowers elegantly accented the space throughout.

Eighty guests enjoyed the opening remarks of the king as well as the beautiful melodies of the choir from The Swedish Church of New York, which entertained the guests with a handful of songs. An evening of delectable cuisine, prepared by chef Frida Johansson, made it truly an affair to remember.

“There is a very important reason we always choose to go to Capital Party Rentals,” says host Eva Hafström. “Capital knows us and understands what we need. I knew that the whole setting would be perfect, and of course, it was.”

Alongside the ambassador’s social secretary Pia Anderson, Capital Party Rentals managed the event. In addition to the clear-top tenting and the old-world wrought iron chandeliers, Capital also provided dramatic sheer ivory draping along the tent perimeter, subflooring with beige carpet, tabletop rentals and full catering.

For the past three years, Capital has worked with the Hafstroms on numerous D.C. events. “When Mrs. Hafström first approached me and said for sure it was going to happen, I thought ‘This is exciting – we are going to have a royal tent!’” says Gloria Collins, director of marketing and partnerships for Capital Party Rentals.

“The event was a great success. Our wonderful clients were very pleased, and it was an amazing compliment that Sweden trusted us with such an important event for their country,” says Collins.

The summer of 2013 brings 15 new street food vendors for a total count of up to 114 stationary vendors in Vancouver. Throw in the 20 mobile vendors prowling the city and we can say we’re really cookin’ with gas.

Next year, there’ll be 15 more spots and at that time the city will review the program to see where to go from there. This year, vendor locations were moved away from downtown core to areas like Beach Avenue, Victory Square, the Langara campus and the Queen Elizabeth Theatre area.

“When we began, we didn’t think Vancouver Coastal Health would support these types of foods. We’ve worked with them, established a set of standards, including nutrition, built a relationship and helped create an application process with them, says Sadhu Johnston, the deputy city manager. “We’ve come a long way.

I’ll say. Vancouver’s street food scene was rated No. 3 last month by Travel and Escape TV, behind Portland and Austin which had huge head starts. And in Portland, anyone who passes inspections can set up in a private lot or one of the parking lot pods which partly explains the 700 street food vendors. In Vancouver, they’re selected for quality and, as much as possible, green considerations.

Vancouver’s 2013 vendors were approved to start May 1 but many are still waiting for trucks or carts to be finished. This year, the city didn’t have a tasting panel as part of the selection process as was the case last year. “It was very, very, very labour intensive for vendors, says Johnston. “It involved quite a level of effort but we may do it again in the future.

“We’ve been learning a lot, says Johnston. “The first year, the lottery method didn’t work very well. We moved to a panel of experts reviewing business plans, menu choices and improved the way we work with our partners from the health side of things. Certainly, we learned about where carts and trucks can fit in. There were some challenges around parking, like some trucks would have designated spots but someone would have parked there despite the signs on the parking meter.

Andy Fielding, president of the Street Food Association and proprietor of Kaboom Box (two locations at Georgia and Burrard and Georgia and Granville) says vendors are inspected “often, in response to concerns some people have about health standards. “Inspectors come to the trucks and to the commissaries. I haven’t worked in restaurants in this city but I understand we’re inspected even more regularly. And besides, part of the experience of street food is seeing food being prepared in front of you. You can look right in and see what’s going on.

The street food business is a challenging one because of the very short season. “It’s akin to a retail store that makes its money at Christmas and you have to have a good location. It’s tricky and it’s a challenge to be outside the downtown area. You really need a density of people, says Fielding.

The Street Food Association, he says, represents about 30 top-tier vendors. “We have a criteria for members and we represent the vendors doing the most unique and sustainable type of menus. It’s the kind of criteria the city uses to choose new vendors. Regular hotdog vendors are not part of the association, he says. “If an event organizer approaches us, they know our members are the top tier.

And events are what will keep vendors afloat through the year. Farmers’ markets and catering are important alternative revenue streams but more events are starting to emerge. “Winter is the Achilles heel of the street food business and we’d like to organize more events through the winter. Dine Out Vancouver’s street food event and food truck festivals have been very successful in past years.

“We’re working with the former owners of the Waldorf Hotel (a food truck festival was organized in the hotel parking lot last year) to put on another festival. They plan to have a food truck festival every Sunday from June 16 to mid-September at a parking lot across from the Terminal Ave. SkyTrain Station.

“We’re trying to organize more events at the art gallery. We’ve met with people there, he adds.

“I could pretty much tell you nobody in this business is getting rich. I think if they’re honest, they’d all tell you that. But working on the streets is fun and I’d like to add that we add a lot to the city in general.
People love food and celebrate it in all forms at festivals all over the world. However, if you’re planning to attend one of our top 10 outlandish food festivals you won’t encounter your average, run-of-the-mill foods. Unless, of course, your diet frequently consists of roadkill, frog legs, animal testicles, insects and other delicacies.

If you are feeling hungry (and adventurous) venture to one of these festivals to celebrate locally prepared dishes made with ingredients not for the fainthearted.

Roadkill, anyone?! (Image: fihu used under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license)

Roadkill Cook-Off, Marlinton, West Virginia, USA

Have you ever seen a dead animal lying on the side of the road and thought, “Wow, I’m hungry?” If you answered yes to this question, then the annual Roadkill Cook-Off in Marlinton might be the perfect food festival for you.

Held on the last Saturday in September, this festival features dishes made from creatures who often find themselves flattened on the side of the road.

Actual roadkill isn’t used in the dishes, but visitors will be sure to get an authentic roadkill experience with sample dishes such as tacos filled with armadillo, porcupine stew and marinated bear.

La Tomatina in Bruñol, Spain (Image: grahammclellan)

La Tomatina, Bruñol, Spain

Feel like taking some aggression out on strangers by throwing crushed tomatoes at them for an hour? Then head to Spain on the fourth Wednesday in August for the largest tomato food fight you will ever encounter.

La Tomatina began around the end of World War II due to a rumoured local fight (the exact origins are unknown) and now draws around 45,000 people every year to toss nearly 250,000 pounds of tomatoes at one another.

Participants are urged to wear goggles and gloves during the fight and, of course, clothing you don’t mind getting permanent tomato stains on.

BugFest, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA

Only for those with an ironclad stomach (or fans of “Fear Factor”), the annual BugFest sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, incorporates insects and creepy crawlers in all of its featured dishes.

This September festival encourages participants to try bug-inspired foods prepared by local chefs, and fine-tune their entomophagy skills – the practice of eating bugs. Past featured dishes have included superworm enchiladas and cinnamon-sugar crickets.

Testicle Festival (Image: Beige Alert)

Testicle Festival, Clinton, Montana, USA

If the name of this annual festival hasn’t made you squirm yet, then keep reading. This Montana event, held in August and known formally as the Rocky Mountain Oyster Festival, is named for one of the main dishes served – bull testicles.

Undecided on your testicle of choice? Enjoy a sampler plate of the featured fare. Reports from last year’s festival found that participants consumed an average of 110 pounds of bull and bison testicles served deep fried, beer-battered or marinated.

After attending this one-of-a-kind event you’re sure to be chanting its motto: “I had a ball at the Testicle Festival.”

Battle of the Oranges (Image: Gio-S.p.o.t.s.)

Battle of the Oranges, Ivrea, Italy

This food festival is only for the brave considering its participants often come out bruised, injured, or even hospitalised. The Battle of the Oranges, which lasts for three days and concludes on Shrove Tuesday (the day before Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent), involves teams of helmet-clad diehards hurling oranges at one another in a tradition that dates back to the 12th century.

Festival organisers ship in approximately 400 tons of oranges annually for the event, and the aftermath requires a clean-up crew of around 100 members.

Cheese curds (Image: dfilippini)

Cheese Curd Festival, Ellsworth, Wisconsin, USA

To help promote the local dairy tradition in the town of Ellsworth, Wisconsin, locals began hosting the Cheese Curd Festival (taking place June 28-30), complete with eating contest and cheese carving competition.

Now, a cheese festival in a state known for its cheese production may not seem uncommon. But given the main dishes at this festival derive from cheese curds – the solid part of soured milk – it deserves this ranking in our top food festivals for those with a stomach of steel.

Waikiki Spam Jam, Waikiki, Hawaii, USA

A food staple in Hawaii, Spam® is that canned meat favourite that some (but not us!) refer to as “mystery meat.” This annual festival honouring the staple (held in April this year) is one of the most popular Hawaiian festivals combining the love of Spam with a family atmosphere and live music.

Don’t fear if this one-of-a-kind meat isn’t your favourite; the festival features some of Honolulu’s best restaurants serving up the meat in a variety of ways for all to enjoy.

Chinchilla Melon Festival, Chinchilla, Australia

What does the so-called “Melon Capital of Australia” do with its excess Watermelon crop? Host a melon-filled festival, of course!

Held once every two years in February in Chinchilla, this melon festival features activities like seed spitting, skiing with watermelon on your feet, melon tossing and more. Past festivals have made the Guinness Book of World Records for most watermelons broken on someone’s head in one minute: 47.

Gilroy Garlic Festival, Gilroy, California, USA

Calling all garlic lovers! The annual Gilroy Garlic Festival celebrates all things garlic in the nicknamed “garlic capital of the world,” Gilroy, California.

The July festival, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, attracts around 100,000 visitors all uniting for the love of garlic. Delicacies include garlic goodies such as lollipops, soft drinks and ice cream.

Fellsmere Frog Leg Festival, Fellsmere, Florida, USA

Who wouldn’t love of mouthful of frog leg or gator tail? Well, you’re sure to get plenty of both at this Florida festival held in January.

The festival features plenty of other tasty treats as well but many visitors come to get the authentic culinary experience. Festival profits go toward supporting youth recreational needs, so rest assured you are snacking on frog legs for a good cause.

“Cheers.”

“Salud.”

“Skoal.”

“Bottom’s up.”

“Here’s to your health.”

These are just a sampling of the toasts that wine lovers will use when they raise their glasses at two annual wine festivals.

The back-to-back wine weekends begin with the North Carolina Wine Festival on Saturday. Now in its 13th year, the festival features some of the state’s finest wines from festival veterans — Duplin Winery, Dennis Vineyards, Chatham Hill Winery and Waldensian Style Wines — along with finger-popping, foot tapping live entertainment.

Back by popular demand, Ken Knox Co, former members of Chairmen of the Board, will be taking the stage along with The Plaids and Walrus, a Greensboro band that will be making their first appearance at the festival.

Tanglewood Park will again be the site for this family-friendly event. Last year it attracted over 15,000 people.

Foreign Cars Italia and the festival are promoting the message: “Don’t drink and drive.”

They are providing “designated driver” ticket discounts, wristbands, information on taxi services and a showcase of foreign vehicles. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter.

“Whether you’re a wine aficionado or just beginning to develop your taste, the North Carolina Wine Festival is the perfect way to spend the day,” said Cami Marlowe, festival director and marketing and promotion director at WSJS radio. “Excellent wine, tasty food and great live music, what better way to spend Memorial Day weekend?”

The eighth annual Salute! The North Carolina Wine Celebration, presented by BBT, pops the cork on the streets of downtown Winston-Salem on June 1, with tastings from 24 North Carolina wineries.

Attendees will have much to savor, including the North Carolina Food Wine University, an interactive and fun educational experience that features food and wine demonstrations by local chefs and regional winemakers. The exhibit demystifies the world of wine, and clarifies the art of food and wine pairings. Presentations will be made every 45 minutes throughout the day.

Watt’s Left will serve up ample helpings of Southern Fried Classic Rock. On the heels of his recently released CD “Tobacco Town,” Caleb Caudle will join Haley Dreis, whose third CD, “Lady with A Rocket,” hit the airwaves in 2012, on stage for an hour-long set that will preview their Salute Wine Down late-night performance at The Garage on June 1 at 9 p.m.

Below The Line, considered one of the hottest bands in Winston-Salem, offers a diverse musical repertoire that combines original and familiar cover songs that span the musical spectrum.

In 2012, Salute! drew nearly 8,000 people. A similar number is expected this year.

“Our goal is to become a premiere destination event for Winston-Salem that attracts regional and out-of-town visitors, and brings economic vitality to downtown and the entire city,” said Mary Charlotte Hinkle, director of marketing and special projects at the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership. “It advances the Downtown Winston-Salem Partnership’s mission to increase vibrancy and drive economic development in our downtown core.”

With the growth of the North Carolina wine industry, these festivals give wine lovers something to toast.

Can you say, “Cheerio!”?

I arrived to find a narrow alleyway under the arches teeming with stalls and people selling everything from Peckham-made gin to organic chorizo sausages and home cured salmon. Much of it was being sold among splendid old furniture and fittings from the LASSCO showroom and there was something decadent and thrilling about tasting gin at 9am.

Then I spotted the doughnut scoffers, a trail of people licking their lips joyfully as they walked past me, so I followed them round the corner to the source of their joy: The St John Bakery on the other side of the arches on Druid Street.

Happy to join the queue and spend £2 on one doughnut, I wouldn’t even let the girl serving me put it in a paper bag. I just took the big, fat, golden ball, still faintly warm, crisp on the outside and lightly dusted with sugar and bit straight into it.

Fresh custard cream, flecked with real vanilla, sweet, rich and cool, oozed out thickly on either side, making this doughnut one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten in my whole life. Worth the queue and worth every penny, but only if you eat it on the spot.

A Colorado summer is simple. It’s a red-checkered picnic spread and smoky smells on the grill. It’s crisp morning hikes and afternoon river floats, a cold microbrew and a midsummer sunset, with sounds of strings and solos dancing in the twilight. Well, it’s summertime in the Rockies at least, and it’s about to get rolling.

Kick off the season with some flavor and fun at two local festivals this Memorial Day weekend. Beaver Creek will showcase its veteran event Blues, Brews BBQ, which is in it’s 10th year, and Vail will host a fresh new festival this year with FEAST! Vail, a celebration of mountains, food and wine.

James Deighan, event producer with Highline marketing and events agency, says FEAST! Vail is meant to combine the elements of adventure and cuisine into one fantastic weekend.

“Everyone knows about the adventure-side of Vail’s summer with climbing, fishing and hiking, but Vail has also built a reputation for culinary excellence,” Deighan said. “Participants will not only be treated to some exceptional food and drink, but they also have the opportunity to climb, hike and take a fly-casting clinic with some of Colorado’s best chefs. FEAST! is a true Vail-lifestyle experience.”

While Vail will be sure to inaugurate its own Memorial Day memories, don’t miss Beaver Creek’s traditional toast to the season. Blues, Brews BBQ will offer mouth-watering BBQ with thirst-quenching microbrews, along with musical highlights throughout the weekend. The holiday kicks off at the Vilar Performing Arts Center on Friday evening, featuring the high-energy Chicago soul blues of Big James and the Chicago Playboys.

FEAST! Vail

The new culinary festival in Vail features renowned chefs from Vail and Denver, as well as drinks from wine masters, cocktail artisans and craft beer experts. Mountain lifestyle has truly made its way into the mix, with yoga, climbing, casting and hiking offered and hosted by guest chefs.

FEAST! Vail events will be held in various locations in Vail and will run from Friday evening until Sunday night. Tickets for events vary in price and are sold individually. You can purchase them at http://feastvail.eventbright.com. For more information about the festival and for full event descriptions, visit www.feastvail.com.

Blues, Brews BBQ

This event fits the bill for appetite and atmosphere. Sit and savor barbecue flavor while tasting craft beers and listening to soulful blues. Don’t miss the featured music or the microbrew festival, and make sure to cast your vote for your favorite barbecue before dozing off in the beer garden.

“Beaver Creek’s Blues, Brews and BBQ event has evolved into a great tradition of signifying our official start to summer,” said Tim Baker, executive director of Beaver Creek Resort Co. “The 10th anniversary includes a Friday evening kickoff concert in the Vilar Performing Arts Center featuring Big James and the Chicago Playboys, a Spiegelau Beerglass Seminar Saturday and the Big Green Egg Backyard Barbecue Competition on Sunday. These new additions complement the great lineup of existing Blues, Brews and BBQ activities that make for a great weekend escape.”

Blues, Brews and BBQ runs from Friday evening through Monday afternoon, May 24-27, and the event offers admission to the plaza and food and beverage will be available for purchase.

For more information about Blues, Brews and BBQ, visit www.beavercreek.com, or buy tickets for ticketed events at http://bcbluesbrewsbbq.eventbrite.com.

Although it’s a shame to not be two places at once during this fun-filled weekend, all of the events are sure to be a truly savored experience.

“Top Chef” contestant and two-time James Beard Award-winner Kelly Liken, of Vail’s Restaurant Kelly Liken, will take part in the FEAST! Vail weekend, highlighting the healthy balance of work and play. Liken hosts Casting and Cuisine, a fly-casting clinic on Sunday.

“In my career, I’ve had the good fortune to be able to live and work almost anywhere,” Liken said. “Yet I choose to live in Vail where you can experience the glorious mountains and rivers, along with some of the tastiest recipes around.”

Belisle says that creating collaborative spaces and partnering with emerging local brands allows landlords to generate excitement.

LAS VEGAS-GlobeSt.com caught up with a few key industry executives at the ICSC RECon 2013 show here in Vegas including Jones Lang LaSalle southwest market director Peter Belisle. One key retail trend on Belisles mind was about how to get creative when thinking about ground floor retail in suburban office space.

With first floor common areas being underutilized in many suburban office buildings, we believe there is an opportunity for landlords to generate excitement by creating collaborative spaces like couches and WiFi and partnering with emerging, local restaurant brands that produce cachet beyond the traditional food cart concept, Belisle explains. The purpose to create a sense of place in a common area that may be underutilized.

This service, he says, would also help create a buzz with visitors and prospective tenants. He adds that JLL is actually in preliminary talks with several institutional landlords about developing a pilot program for their portfolio around this concept. We are also talking with restaurants about this idea, he says.

Retailers are in need of high quality growth opportunities, says Coslik.

And over at the Woodmont Co. booth was Stephen Coslik, chairman of the firm, who tells us that overall, activity at the RECon event has been strong and positive.

Coslik is seeing a high level of retailer interest, especially at our ground up developments throughout the country.

But retailers, he notes, are still very selective, but they are in need of high quality growth opportunities. Deal terms, he adds, are improving slightly for landlords with some upward movement with rents and moderate reduction in incentives.

Summer is almost upon us, which means lots of sun, beach-going, and movie-viewing (of course). The traditional movie-going experience can have you couped up in a theater for hours, which means you’ll miss the beautiful weather outside.

Luckily, Moviefone is taking you out of the theater, and into the sunshine (and under the stars) with this year’s Street Food Cinema.

The event also features gourmet food trucks and music from emerging L.A. musicians. Tickets to the event are $10, which includes access to the food, music, and live entertainment.
