On May 7 Street Spirits provided a performance /workshop process for a conference at the Tillicum Friendship Centre in Quesnel. The play was a new piece about the experience of a mother and daughter dealing with child protection problems. We performed this in forum theatre then engaged the audience in creating new scenes to work through issues of concern to them. Over the afternoon we created scenes about the power imbalances that sometime affect relationships, about bullying asnd about how elders and youth view one another. Taking part for Street Spirits were Ann, Andrew, Chelsea, Vanessa, Al, Adam, Ali and Meranda.

Haida Gwaii

From May 21 to 27 Street Spirits travelled to Haida Gwaii to provide 3 performances and a workshop for Victims of Crime Awareness Week. We drove to Prince Rupert then took the ferry overnight to Skidegate. We arrived early Monday morning and took some time to relax and regroup before performing our first show Monday evening. The performance was “Shadow of a Scream” our play about the aftermath of sexual abuse and how it affects families. The performance was at the Haida Heritage Centre, a beautiful venue with a really nice stage space. Participation and response were good with a lot of discussionand intevention. For our Tueday and Wednesday performances we created a new play on site. We used a technique we have been developing called “point counterpoint” that involves monologues followed by interactive scenes. The play looked at issues of substance use and how it affects the people around a drug user. The shows were given in the Charlotte and Massett high schools. resonse in both schools was positive and effective. On Wednesday evening we conducted a workshop process with members of the Massett community girl’s group exploring issues of concern to them. We had some time to travel the island and see the sights while we were there. We strongly recommend Haida Gwaii as a place to visit. We also recommend Dorothy and Mike’s Guest House. It is a really fine place to stay with a beautiful view overlooking the strait. the team for Haida Gwaii included Vanessa, Dominique, Pedro, Charles, Teresa and Andrew.

The Black Hand

On March 21, 2013 Street Spirits provided a performance of “The Black Hand” an original play about discrimination and prejudice. The play was created at the request of the Immigration and Multiculturalism Services Society and was presented at their meeting hall. Audience members saw the play and had the chance to intervene and attempt to change the story. Elements of the play were built around a simple idea that masked complex issues. Each person on stage wore one black glove. issues of prejudice and discrimination developed based on which hand the glove was worn. Some audience members saw this as a story about racism, others saw it as homophobia, still others thought of it as about class distinctions. By the end of the play it was clear that all of these reasons for discrimination made as much sense as which hand a glove was worn on.

Breaking Bodies

On February 6 Street Spirits provided a performance at Artspace of Breaking Bodies, an original production exploring how young people develop a sesne of who they are and of what their body means to them. This event was organized to coincide with Eating Disorders Awareness Week. While our performance touched on eating disorders the play went much further, looking at how body image influences many aspects of a person’s life and relationships.

Future Cents

On January 16 Street Spirits provided a one day workshop for participants in the Future Cents program. This workshop focused on identifying health concerns for youth in the Prince George area. Participants used theatre to generate meaningful scenes about such problems as anxiety, depression, lack of exercise, poor diet and substance use.

Xmas party

On Dec 13 2012 Street Spirits hosted our annual Christmas partyat the Great Wall. this has become an important part of our year and features a report on our year of work and a planning session for the future. As always all current and past members of Street Spirits were welcome. We had 22 people in attendance.

Two Spirits Group

On November 27 Street Spirits provided a workshop ffor the Two Spirits group at the Prince George Friendship Centre. We engaged the group in Theatre games and a scene creation process. The group explored the nature and impact of discrimination and marginalization experienced by youth in the school system and in the community. Taking part for Street Spirits were Mary, Dominuique, Charles and Vanessa.

Tl’azt’en

On November 24 Street Spirits travelled to Tachie to present a performance about the misuse of prescription and non prescription drugs for the Tl’azt’en First nation. We drove out the Tachie in the morning, met with the organizers and presented our performance to a mixed audience of children, youth and adults. Participation and discussion were good. We had lunch at the hall then returned to Prince George. Taking part for Street Spirits were Charles, Vanessa, John, Dominique, Mary and Ann.

College Heights Secondary

On Friday November 23 Street Spirits provided a workshop for students of College Heights Secondary School. To make this happen with Andrew being away at a conference in Vancouver, Elise took control of organizing and leading the workshop. Assisting her in the work were Charles, Vanessa and Teresa.

Goodbye to Kaiser

On November 17, Kaiser Glaab, a long time performer, workshop leader and representative for Street Spirits left us to accept a position in Alberta. Kaiser’s great work and dedication to the company will be sorely missed. We look forward to connecting with him when he returns to visit in the future.
