Well, here comes the classic "It has been a long time, but I promise to post again" post. I just moved to a new city, London, ON. I figure I have some exploring to do, some new techniques I have read about that I want to try, and well, I promise to start posting those photos once again.

Walking Home From Carleton

Just some photos I took on the way home last night. It was cold and my hands were frozen and this was not helped by the rain and later icy snow that started falling. It was very, very dark under the bridge and getting good photos was difficult. As you can see from the brightness in the regions that are not under the bridge the photos had to be highly overexposed. I think I should have upped the ISO but I was on autopilot last night and did not think of this.

I decided that I wanted to take a few photos down by a nearby stream tonight. However, this was a bit of a challenge. As you are probably aware a large storm is hitting the eastern US today, and while we are on the edge of this the high winds are causing problems, with gusts as high as 50-60 km/h. With my tripod bag blowing away and the tripod shaking and feeling like it might topple over I decided I had to call it a night after only a few photos. The branches should give you a good idea as to how windy it was.

Billings Bridge

It rained today and I had planned to go out and take some photos that tried to make sure of the sitting water around Billings Bridge. My memory card had a different idea however and decided to corrupt itself before I got a chance to do that. So here are a few photos I took tonight. Most of them are pretty bad, but I did get a chance to play with the saturation and contrast, which resulting in some nice changes in the colour and differences between the shadows and lit portions of the images.

I went for a walk fairly far south tonight, a lot farther than normal at least. I had wanted to take some photos of the CN trainyard but I did not get a chance to investigate just how close I could get to it. Perhaps another day I will be able to do that. However, I did follow a small road that went under this bridge and really liked the location. The photos were not great, but the grittiness of the location worked well for me.

These pylons were simply impressive. I will have to come back and take more photos near them. However, the humming was a little off-putting.

Patterson Creek Etc.

I set out a bit earlier than normal this evening as I had planned to walk all of the way down to the Fleet Street Pumping House and Bronson Pulp Mill but I got distracted and my feet were hurting so I stayed a little closer to home. Today I wandered down Bank Street until I got to Patternson Creek and from there I followed this strip of parkland until I reached the Rideau Canal. In the end I did not actually take many photos and I was not very happy with them. There were a lot of nice sights and some beautiful houses that I drooled over but for various reasons I found taking photos of these features rather difficult. Anyway, here are a few of the somewhat reasonable ones.

A trip to Hog's Back Falls

My walk tonight was a fair bit longer than I expected and sadly I was not overly happy with the photos I managed to take. There seemed to be something a little bit wrong, something I was unhappy with, in every photo. Today I wandered from Billings Bridge to Hog's Back Falls. It was actually quite a journey as the roads were under heavy construction along Heron and navigating the sidewalks was a bit of a disaster. But once I got there it was worth it. The falls are as impressive as I remembered, the force of the water is pretty amazing and wandering around in the dark nearby them was a little bit creepy and weird.

They lined up so well, I had to take a photo.

I went for a walk along Pleasant Park tonight. I had not walked very far along this street before and never at night so it was a new experience. It was very quiet and I found some nice forested and green areas to wander around in all by myself. I will have to do this again with someone else and perhaps explore Pleasant Park Woods at some point. There were a number of locations that I could not explore as it was simply getting too late or I was getting too creeped out. Another adventure for another time. The strong gusts of wind led to some interesting effects during the long exposure photographs. The trees whipped around, sometimes looking rather fuzzy in the final photograph, a bit like a painting in some cases. I am not sure if this is a good thing or not, but I will have to keep this effect in mind the next time I am shooting in weather like this.

I am not sure what this location was. The field had some rutted tracks running through it and a lot of waste, little plots and such. Perhaps it is a community garden? I really need to find out. However it was so dark I really could not tell what I was looking at

I went out on a photo mission last night but about 10 minutes after leaving I realized I had forgotten my SD card in my computer. I decided to do some investigation and found a few locations I liked so I decided to head out again tonight. I am posting quite a few photos and I admit many of them are pretty mediocre but there is always something I like about each one, even if overall the photos did not work very well.

I thought the clouds were pretty much perfect for taking photos of an industrial type location tonight. Very ominous looking.

This building is pretty nondescript from the front but I love the rest of it (also, it is full of cool switches and machinery. The view through the windows was rather tantalising)

Tonight I went for a walk along the northern side of the Rideau River. Most of this area runs behind houses so technically I did not get many photos that include streets but I think I will post them anyway. Paths are just streets for pedestrians. I did not get very far though. After taking a few night sky photographs I started having problems with dew and had to call it a night. I will have to make a longer trip some other night.

Short Wanderings

I decided to go out and take some photos tonight as it had been some time since my last post. Originally I had planned to wander all the way over to Riverside and Bronson, or even Hog's Back Falls, in order to take some photos of historic buildings in that area. However, I found that my batteries were low so I stayed closer to home. Besides, it was getting pretty late.

I have been in Montreal for the last few days. Sadly I have not had many opportunities to take photographs at night. This evening I had my camera but no tripod so I did not expect to take any photographs. However, with the help of a lamp post I was able to take these two before getting on the train and heading back to the hotel.
