While writing Monday’s post on How To Add Nofollow To Wordpress Tags and Tag Cloud , I discovered a feature of YouTube videos that’s quite useful to folks like me who sometimes find themselves browsing on a slow internet connection or restricted monthly bandwidth.

This feature is called Interactive Script and can be seen in action @ Do Tag Clouds Help Or Hinder SEO?. Unfortunately it’s not available for every YouTube video.

Clicking on the Interactive Transcript icons pops down a menu such as that shown below in which you can read the entire script of the video without having to waste your bandwidth or wait hours for the whole video to load .

Wordpress tag links and tag clouds. To use or not to use. The debate continues. Most SEO guys are of the opinion that the probability of being penalized by Google increases when wordpress tag clouds are added to a blog/site.

Here’s what Google’s Matt Cutts has to say about the use of tags and tag clouds.

Personally I need my tags as I don’t have time to set keywords for each and every blog post so I rely on All In One SEO to turn my tags into keywords.

In other to keep the Big G happy, I decided to look for a way of adding the nofollow attribute to ALL my tag links including those within a cloud and I stumbled on Kaf Oseo’s Nofollow Tag Cloud.

By default, this little plug-in inserts rel=’nofollow’ in links generated by wp_tag_cloud() ONLY! If you’d like to apply the nofollow attribute to tags appearing within your posts too, you’d have to edit the plug-in as shown below.

Remove // from line 22 circled in red above so that it looks like this:

Save the plug-in, upload it to your wordpress plug-in folder and activate it via your wordpress dashboard and you’re done.

NOTE: In the event that your browser downloads the file with a .htm extension, you’ll have to rename that to .php

HOW TO ADD THE NOFOLLOW ATTRIBUTE TO WORDPRESS’ READ MORE LINK

The Read More link that appears on the front page of a wordpress blog or its’ archives page has no SEO benefit at all and as such should be nofollowed. It’s kinda crazy to rank for "Read the rest of this entry" .

Using the Custom More Link plug-in by Michael Weingaertner, you can add the nofollow attribute to the read more link while @ the same time removing the #-number anchor that is added to the read more link by default.

Below is the simple plug-in setup.

With nofollow in place on my tags and tag cloud, I can now use tags freely without stressing myself about the chances of getting penalized by Google .

Whether we all agree or not, Akismet till dates remains the best anti-spam plug-in for Wordpress blogs. If you’re in doubt all you have to do is deactivate Akismet and try any other anti-spam plug-in on it’s own and you’d note a surge in spam like never before.

Most Captcha plug-ins fail when used in combination with WordPress cache plug-ins such as W3 Total Cache and WP Super Cache and they can’t be trusted to work on their own either.

One of Akismet’s UGLIEST features is its white/blank page of horror which it throws up whenever it feels a comment is spammy is nature. This white/blank page of horror can be quite frustrating for commenters who have left lengthy comments as those comments are in most cases lost once the blank page surfaces.

Depending on how the blog author has configured Akismet, comments that trigger the blank page are either deleted entirely from the blog’s system or are stored in the spam folder for moderation. If the blog author is a busy person or just has an aversion for checking his spam folder, you can kiss any of your legit comments which lands in the spam folder, goodbye.

I implore all wordpress blog owners to PLEASE READ: Red Alert! Akismet Might Be Deleting Your Comments ASAP!

Conditional CAPTCHA for WordPress comes to the rescue of legit comments taking advantage of Akismet’s blank page of horror and making it useful to both the blogger and his commenters .

Here’s how it works and how it can help you save those legit comments and reduce those spammy comments to the barest minimum .

By default, whenever Akismet detects a comment as being spammy in nature, the commenter will be redirected to the blank page http://www.sitename.com/wp-comments-post.php.  As soon as Conditional CAPTCHA detects this, it will automatically append a captcha to that page as shown below:

OR

If the commenter is able to answer the captcha quiz, his comment will automatically be approved or left in the spam folder for moderation.

If the commenter fails to answer the captcha quiz, his comment will automatically be trashed or deleted entirely from the system.

THE PROS OF CONDITIONAL CAPTCHA FOR WORDPRESS PLUG-IN

1. No bot generated spam will EVER make it into your spam folder.
2. No legit comment is EVER lost!
3. No interference from cache plug-ins as they have no business with the blank/white page of horror.
4. 90% of comments left in your spam queue are LEGIT!

THE CONS OF CONDITIONAL CAPTCHA FOR WORDPRESS PLUG-IN

1. For now the plug-in currently supports Akismet and TypePad AntiSpam ONLY and can’t work without either of these plug-ins
2. The plug-in lacks an option to mark the comment as pending which is needed in blogs where comment moderation is activated. With this plug-in, you either approve the comment and it goes live @ once or you leave it in the spam folder till when you’re ready to fish it out.
3. Since legit comments are still left in the spam folder, Akismet maintains its records of your url being supposedly spammy and thus you remain in its’ blacklist.

HOW TO SETUP CONDITIONAL CAPTCHA FOR WORDPRESS PLUG-IN

Below is a capture of my current settings for the plug-in. The default text-based CAPTCHA works better than using reCAPTCHA.

Feel free to modify your own settings to suit your taste.

Also with the installation of Conditional CAPTCHA, WP Spam Free had to go as it wasn’t compatible with the plug-in and I didn’t want to have more than two anti-spam plug-ins.

I’ve been taking a look @ Kothapally Arun’s free e-book Search Engine Optimization for Wordpress 3.0 blogs and with over 500 retweets and counting, it seems quite a popular e-book.

I’ll be airing a few opinions of mine with respect to the topics discussed in the report

Step 6 of the report deals with modifying wordpress post title tags. Arun makes a good point that the H1 tag is the most important of all tags in a wordpress theme and thus all post title tags should be enclosed in the H1 tag.  This advice suddenly goes wrong when he suggests making the change to the post title tags on your index.php file i.e your blog’s front page.

With the little I know from reading loads of SEO posts especially those by Google’s own Matt Cutts, on a proper wordpress theme, the H1 tag is supposed to be used once on any page. Following Arun’s suggestion, applying the H1 tag to the post title tags on the front page of your blog (index.php) would mean that you’d be having more than one H1 tag on the front page and this is so not ideal for the search engines.

By default the only HI tag on the front page of a wordpress site should be the around the BLOG HEADER ONLY!

If you’re going to change your post title’s tag to H1, it’s recommended you do it on single.php not index.php. Even at that, you’d have to modify your blog header’s tag in such a way that on the front page, it’s enclosed in the H1 tag while on other pages across the site, it has a different tag.

NOTE: Changing your post title’s tag could affect the default design of your post title. You would need skills in editing a stylesheet (style.css) to fix this should such a scenario present itself.

Step 7 is all about setting an Ideal Permalink Structure for your blog.

Arun recommends using the structure http://www.yoursitename.com/year/month/date/postname. It’s a great suggestion but when you take things like making database queries faster and less CPU intensive into consideration, having the post id in the permalink structure is even better. This way, the wordpress system goes straight to the post with the specific post id instead of rummaging through all the posts posted on a particular date so as to find the exact one that belongs to the link that was just clicked.

Here’s my own ideal permalink structure http://www.yoursitename.com/post-name/post-id or http://www.yoursitename.com/post-id/post-name. Wordpress’ default permalink uses the post or page-id only and I’m guessing it’s all in a bid to increase performance and speed .

In Step 12 Arun makes a great suggestion about increasing site speed with the use of WP Super Cache plug-in but he does fail to mention that there might be server issues if his settings are used on a shared hosting server.

Please take note that most shared hosting servers don’t support gzip @ all.  Here’s Hostgator’s recommended settings for WP Super Cache on their shared hosting plans.

Finally for some reason, Arun is of the opinion that installing wordpress in a subdirectory could bring about duplicate content issues. If for example you install wordpress @ www.yoursite.com/blog, Arun says both www.yoursite.com and www.yoursite.com/blog will display the same content.

That’s quite strange to me as www.strictlyonlinebiz.com and www.strictlyonlinebiz.com/blog are showing different content.

Overall the report makes an excellent SEO read for any wordpress beginner. It’s really worth taking a look at for sure .

Over the weekend, I had a lil’ business meeting with one of Nigeria’s young entrepreneur, Ahmad Mukoshy about the possibility of a collaboration between EzBlogSetup and Aimtech Nigeria Hosting. The meeting ended on a good note with the terms that EzBlogSetup’s services will be included to Aimtech Nigeria’s shopping cart as an add-on service @ a discount of 25%.

When I launched StrictlyOnlineBiz back in February 2009, I signed up for a 2CheckOut merchant account for a one time fee of $49 but I never got to use it as I wasn’t successful in coming up with a proper product to sell. By default, 2CheckOut only allows one URL per account and any change to the URL costs $19.

In my case, probably because I haven’t made a sale on the account, 2CheckOut waived the $19 fee and changed my URL for FREE so I can now accept Credit Card/PayPal payments @ EzBlogSetup .

In the coming weeks, it seems adsense ads are to get some serious revamping that promises to increase CTR supposedly. Read [Inside AdSense] A new look for AdSense for content ad units. The rectangle formats (728 x 60 and 336 x 280) are amongst the ad formats that will be getting the treatment.

In one of my weekly top blog posts round up, I raved about the stunning Smart Sharing plug-in by the folks @ WpBeginner. This plug-in made it possible to add a floating social media bookmark panel to the side of your wordpress blog’s theme making it easier for your readers to bookmark and share your posts.

I was in love with it, until, I casually navigated the mobile version of this site and discovered that the floating panel was now floating over my content thus making it impossible for mobile visitors to read my blog posts.

I uninstalled the plug-in @ once and started looking for ways to implement it’s function within the desktop theme of my blog ONLY! After reading How To Create A Sexy Vertical Sliding Panel Using jQuery And CSS3 and Fixed Social Icons on the Side of Whole Site, I created my own floating bookmarks box and here’s how I managed it.

Log in to your wordpress admin area then go straight to theme editor. Copy and paste the css code below into your theme’s stylesheet (style.css)

Save your single.php template and your floating bookmarks panel should now appear right at the side of your theme on every single post.

If you’d like to change the distance of the floating panel from the top of the screen/monitor, simply edit top which is shown in red above. For left and right display of the panel and distance from the theme also edit left shown in red too.

As you all might have noticed, I’m no longer using it here because Amit Banerjee complained that it was blocking the contents of my blog. Apparently it works fine on monitors with larger resolutions than smaller ones.

NOTE: Only use the floating panel if you’re quite certain that the majority of your visitors have got high resolution monitors or wide screen monitors. I think there’s a way of tracking that via Google Analytics. I’m not so sure now.
