Abstract:

An experiment investigated the assumption that a domestic house cat will not eat something that is perceived as smelling bad to the cat. Drawing on numerous studies that the author read or thought he had read, the experimenter argues that cats may have free will.

Introduction:

Their is accumulating evidence that television science is not scientific. For example, Jones (2006) argues that Fonzie could not have jumped his motorcycle over a shark, Buttkiss (2000) asserts that radioactive spinach would not have made Giligan stronger, and in his landmark study McCafferty (2008) concludes that shows investigating the paranormal never find evidence of the paranormal.

The Sardine Factor:

Joining the ranks of these debunkers, McGrath (2009) observes that the ABC science fiction show “FlashForward” is equally lacking in its basic understanding of science:

The FlashForward version [of Schroedinger's Cat in a box] has a cat hidden away with a poisoned sardine. Not only does this not involve quantum indeterminacy, but unless the poison can be smelled, there is really no doubt that the cat will eat the sardine, is there?

Aim, Design, & Hypothesis:

The aim of this experiment was to test if a domestic house cat would eat something that smelled bad. The dependent variable in this experiment is one domestic house cat who is presented with a choice of something that tastes good and something that tastes bad.

Method:

One domestic house cat participated in this experiment. “Fred” (aka the house cat) was presented with a choice of two sardines. Sardine A (clear plate) contained a normal sardine while Sardine B (the blue plate) was stuffed with a crushed kitty vitamin. In a previous experiment it had been proven conclusively that “Fred” would not eat the kitty vitamin without assistance (Patterson, 2008).

Results:

Fred was placed at an equal distance from both sardine plates. Moreover, Fred did not see the experimenter treat Sardine B (blue plate) with the cat vitamin therefore he lacked any prior knowledge of either sardines’ condition. In the video Fred is observed walking directly to the control Sardine and then he proceeds to devour it. While this is happening something unexpected occurs: “Karli”, another one of the experimenter’s cats, interrupts the test. She first smells Sardine A, ignores it, and moves on to Sardine B. After a few sniffs she concludes that neither Sardine is worth eating. Fred, however, finishes Sardine A and proceeds to devour Sardine B.

Conclusion:

The results of this experiment indicate that cats have free will. These findings may seriously challenge theology’s assertion that Homo sapiens have a special place in creation. The experimenter believes that more studies need to be conducted before any final conclusions are proposed.

From the blogs:

- First I’d like to draw your attention to two martial arts blogs. The first is Self-Defense for Women and the second is Crime Information. Both have a lot of good material so you should really check them out!

- Check out a Jiu Jitsu persective on Yoga!

I know little yoga, but I try to incorporate its principles and practice into my daily life. It affects me deeply and has offered to me a lens with which to understand the workings of life, just as Jiu Jitsu has.

- Well I think I finally figured out who the commenter Jon Law is so why not check out his blog? I, for one, look forward to reading!

This blog will chart everything that is going on in my martial arts world at Epic Martial Arts Academy in Birmingham, UK.

- Urban Samurai has a review up of Geoff Thompson’s Master Class. Next to Loren Christensen, Mr. Thompson is one of my favorite no BS self-defense instructors. However the Bob Patterson cheese award still goes to Bas Rutten!

Now, most people who know Geoff Thompson obviously know him for his self defense stuff and this is what most people will watch this for, to learn the art of self defense, and the viewer will certainly not be let down in that respect.

The videos:

- Here’s one for the Taiji crowd. If you don’t want to watch the form FF to about 4:05 for the applications. Pretty cool stuff! The punch defense reminded me of Aikido and the kick defense was pretty cool too — though he really should keep those hands up!

- Lets close this week’s news with footage from that British reporter who was attacked by those drunken buffoons.

You really have to give this black belt Karate reporter credit for his control. I suspect that this can be directly related to his Karate training. That drunken moron was in his face so many times that it isn’t even funny! Even worse, when the drunk starts to swing on him the reporter STILL keeps his cool and does not level the guy. I’ll be you $100 dollars that the front snap kick the reporter delivers to his groin was not at full power. Based on my prison days I’d have to say that after the guy swung on me all bets would have been off!

While both videos are pretty good neither make Side Bar Video of the Week.

Wim’s post on Christensen’s new book got me to thinking about my days of working in the joint. The book deals with tactics for the pain resistant attacker. Now some of you might think you are very sound in your particular system and can deal with anybody. You may indeed be a martial arts master but I’m here to tell you that unless you’ve scrapped with some knuckleheads in a non-sport setting, you may be missing the big picture.

The correctional officer strategy for dealing with any inmate — pain resistant or otherwise! — is this: Superior numbers. When it came to the solo officer we relied on camera positions, visual coverage from the towers, a hope that we could hit our tactical alert buttons if attacked, and good ol’ scene awareness to make sure we did not get into a blind spot. That having been said it was simply impossible not to be in spots where we were at a definite tactical disadvantage. Worse still, floor officers roamed among the inmates without weapons. All we had were radios and keys! Weapons were restricted for special teams, special positions, and special assignments. Generally it’s not a good idea to give murders and rapists the opportunity to get their hands on weapons which is the rationale behind keeping them off the floor.

The reality system that we had to certify and re-certify in was called PPCT. The company does a pretty good job of keeping their tactics secret. In fact, it’s very hard to find much online material that covers what is taught. The obvious reason for this secrecy is to keep it from the bad guys! Anyhow, I found a group that breaks down the current offerings. Better still I can show you what courses I once took!

Inmate control

Knife defense

Impact weapons

Now one course I wish they had offered 11 years ago is this one: Ground Avoidance. In fact I think all stand up systems including the traditional martial arts would do well to work this type of material into their curriculum.

Back to the topic…

Loren’s excerpt talks about the pain resistant attacker and something called the somatic arc. Maybe it’s a police thing or maybe it just varies from profession and department. Anyhow, the PPCT folks spent an awful lot of time teaching us the “fluid shock wave principle”. The Fluid Shock Wave Principle uses nerve motor points as targets. The fist, foot, or baton is struck at a large muscle mass saturated with nerve motor points, and if done correctly, the nerves become over stimulated and experience a motor dysfunction. This motor dysfunction may temporarily immobilizes and weaken the region of the muscle mass. If a fluid shock wave is induced into a large muscle mass, the person may experience intense pain and may be temporarily immobilized in the muscle region of impact.

Or so the theory goes. The reality is that in four years of dealing with knuckleheads I rarely saw this work for the solo officer. Where it usually worked was with two or more officers trying to control one inmate. With two or more officers their to distract and partially restrain the solo officer usually had a clear shot. When it’s one-on-one it’s very hard to pull off a targeted strike on nerve motor points. In fact, the two times I saw it work it was delivered by officers who were at least six feet tall and a solid 200 lbs of body weight. One blasted a belligerent inmate in the shin with a hard toed boot while the other leveled a moron with a PPCT-style round kick to the outer thigh. Both inmates hit the ground thinking their legs had been broken yet both were up and walking again within the hour. Also, both inmates did not see it coming. Both had become verbally aggressive and were showing body language that justified this level of force. As they got in the officers’ face, both regained control through a surprise strike on a mostly stationary inmate.

The times I saw this principle fail are almost too numerous to recount. Top of the proverbial list would be the PPCT knee strike to the outer thigh. I once saw a female officer hanging on for dear life as the rest of us ran to her aid. All she kept trying is one of the few things she was taught: The outer thigh knee strike. All it really did was annoy the inmate. Lucky for her the strength in numbers principle did work!

I used to chuckle when Lt. Locus would say: “Patterson, use half this shit they teach us and we’ll get our asses kicked!” Lt. Locus was half right. The more I thought about if for this post I suddenly realized that the motor nerve over-stimulation idea is sound. In fact, the times I saw it work where when the inmate was partially restrained so that another officer had a clear shot. What is not sound is reasonably pulling it off alone, with minimal practice, or if you are of slight build (to a certain extent strength can compensate for poor technique). The typical corrections or security person certifies once and then re-certifies each year. This is just not enough time to build up any skill in solo combat. The only martial arts comparison I could think is having a crash course in point sparring and then being dumped in a tournament and expected to do well. Well, one week of training in intense point sparring is likely to result in someone losing badly at that hypothetical tournament!

As far as Christensen and the pain resistant attacker, well, I’m not sure. It was against the rules to eye gouge and we were not taught to punch the liver or poke the femoral artery in the pelvis. We were taught to strike the peroneal nerve of the inner thigh and also to strike the outer thigh. Those last two tactics I saw work but again it was usually with two or more officers.

So will any of this work for the striking martial artist? Probably. Think about how many training hours are required for a brown belt equivalent in Taekwondo, Karate, or a similar punching and kicking art. If you’ve had that many hours of static, targeted (i.e. pads, bags, etc.), and sparring practice then yes, I think you stand a good chance of hitting one of these sweet spots which may slow an attacker. The typical solo corrections or police officer does not have the luxury of those practice hours. However, this group often has some equalizers: superior numbers and various lethal and non-lethal weapons. So for sure I plan to get my hands on Loren’s book when it finally comes out!

Related to all this is a post on technique overload that I saw at Ikagai’s.

If 5 prearranged knife self defense techniques are good, certainly 50 would be better right?

One valuable lesson I learned from PPCT is the “keep it simple” principle. Their training centers on learning three to five techniques and then practicing those techniques in class and for real on the job. The idea is that when attacked it’s better to do some thing rather than nothing at all. Going back to the above female officer and her knee strike, some might argue that she was ineffective. In fact some of the male officers said exactly that after the event was over. If you put it in context I have to say that she was effective. Despite not crippling the attacker she did keep him distracted long enough for help to arrive. The inmate thought he had an easy target but the inmate was wrong!

Try the Patterson Principle: Take two or three hand strikes, kicks, throws, blocks/evasions, and at least one ground avoidance technique and practice them on your own at least once per week. Almost all of this can be practiced on a stationary bag. The rest can be treated as mini-katas or as simple solo drills and you can run through all of it in about 15 minutes. For example, I learned a version of this tackle avoidance drill at a seminar and now practice it every couple of weeks on my own. Ground is not my main game so at the very least it’s a good idea to practice some basics for not ending up there! Want to kick it up a notch? Find a willing partner from your school and practice these simple basics a few times a month. I’m certainly a far cry from the expert that Loren Christensen is but I can say that based on four years of prison observation, the keep it simple principle does work!

I want to close this post with two videos that are slightly related to the topic at hand. I probably should cover these in a post on batons but I’ve decided not to. The first is an old police training video on baton use. I have no idea what police officers are taught today. In PPCT we were only taught three basic strikes. In Army Guard riot training we were taught maybe a half dozen strikes. Anyhow, once I bracket out the general hilarity of this video I do have to say that a lot of these strikes would be very effective. I also have to say that many would look very bad if caught on a video camera so my hunch is that law enforcement might not be taught techniques like this today!

(Nothing like a baton to the neck to stop a pain resistant attacker and also probably get yourself sued! And how about that “American Strangle”? Can you imagine what the press would do to the officer who is caught on tape doing that to some attacker?)

And now the Hollywood Mythbuster’s version! Great fight scene but not very realistic.

I now have about six months in Praying Mantis Kung Fu under my proverbial belt. Bear in mind that about two months into it I got injured and had to take a month off. Anyhow, driving home from class last night I could not help but compare it to my return to Taekwondo. After a semester of Taekwondo I was operating at a higher skill level than I am with six months of Kung Fu. So why the Kung Fu suck? Probably these reasons:

A previous first run in TKD that took me half way to black belt (second run in TKD had the first run to draw on)

TKD seems to be broken down into smaller steps before they have you put it all together

Kung Fu is harder and by harder I mean it has many more techniques that require complex motor skills and the ability to flow dynamically

Having a total of five years of TKD on the brain to “learn around”

I in no way want those bullet points to offend the Taekwondo crowd or the Kung Fu crowd. In fact, there a certain methods TKD used that I wish Kung Fu would use. In addition, Kung Fu does certain things that I wish I’d have seen in Taekwondo.

Anyhow, before I focus on the suck I’ll outline what I think I can reasonably pull off in Kung Fu. (and by reasonable I mean against someone who has not had formal training in Kung Fu!)

Stop kick, stomp kick, toe kick, round kick, push kick & crescent kick (Taekwondo really helped me to pick these up fast)

Straight punch, straight jab, Long Fist hammer strike, Long Fist-style backfist and uppercut

Two or three basic KF kicks with simultaneous hand strikes (low-high or high-low)

Hook-hand to unbalance (this may be my favorite technique so far)

Hook-hand with simple strikes

The list of what I suck at is huge so in effort to keep it short I’ll focus on some broad concepts:

Footwork and body mechanics simultaneously with strikes and/or kicks suck

Sticky legs/tripping sucks

Dynamic flowing and adapting techniques to a given situation sucks

Fighting “Kung Fu style” with the footwork really sucketh

First I want to show my favorite technique: The hook-hand or Mantis claw.

Primary to how we are being taught is to use it to set up a strike. Secondary is it’s unbalancing potential. I am really fixated on it’s secondary applications. In fact it’s so versatile, simple, and effective I keep saying: Why didn’t I think of that? You can use it to defend against a strike or a grab. Also, as you can start to see in this simple video, you can pull an opponent off balance. What’s not shown in that video is what happens if you take your opponent’s arm across and down. (i.e. taking that lead right hand and directing it toward the opponents left foot) If someone does this to the attacker it’s virtually impossible for the attacker to keep his/her balance and even if your opponent does not fall he/she is usually open for a strike. I’ve also found that the taller they are the harder it is for them to keep their balance.

Related to all this and my above chart is a recent post I saw over at TDA Training. The chap in the video refers to “aliveness” which I think is a good thing. However, before you can be dynamic and fluid I think you still need to spend some time on the static baby steps, too. This, of course, takes me back to Kung Fu. Thus far we’ve had a mixture of static drills, solo line drills, and partner drills than run the gambit from static and fixed to dynamic sensing and flowing. Simply put: I think you need it all!

For example, last night we focused on a simple hand trap with Kung Fu backfist or uppercut. The gist of it had one hand blocking/trapping and rolling down while the strike rolled up. Both movements are done at the same time and appear in at least a few of the many forms. We started by watching, progressed to stationary, then added some footwork. After that we partnered up and practiced a two-person set pattern. Finally, we closed class with a push hands-type sensitivity and flow drill. The basic goal of the activity was not to become Tai Chi experts. Rather, we stuck and flowed with our opponent — as we did this one would attempt the trap/strike while the other would counter.

Without a doubt the part that had us being “alive” was the hardest part to learn. In fact I’m almost hesitant to call it “learn” because on a scale of 1-10 most of us were at the 2 or 3 level of suck! That having been said, I don’t think ANY of the newbies could have done that freestyle partner flow drill without having had practice in all the baby steps that led up to it.

Lets close this post with a video that comes very close to depicting what I just described. It does not show the same techniques we practiced last night nor does it close with a live a fluid drill. What it does illustrate is the Kung Fu method of taking a technique from a form, then breaking it down to a simple application, and finally into a set two-person sequence. The only thing missing is the dynamic flow/sensitivity activity. I think it’s easy for other styles to see maybe the first 2/3rds of this video or even just the beginning form and say: Man that would never work in a “real” setting. The problem is that most of the time that critic may be missing the big picture and overall learning objective! Moreover, a lot of these critics come from a system that has streamlined the longer TMA path to “alive”. Despite their systems reducing the so-called “classical mess” I can tell you that most–if not all!–STILL break their techniques down before they let someone start being all fluid and alive.

Oh one last thing: Pay attention to how Sifu Hayward starts to pull his partner’s arm down and across the body and note what happens to his partner. This goes back to my earlier comment of why I like the Mantis claw so much!

Here’s a humorous take on that reality series that investigates ghosts.

Note: The YouTube version was pulled. I replaced it with the the South Park Studies version. Be advised that this clip uses profanity.

I show this clip because it makes a really good point. In fact, since “reality tv” seems to be here to stay, I can’t help but always wonder why people keep watching this stuff. Monster Quest, UFO Hunters, Ghost Hunters, etc., NEVER actually find conclusive evidence of a monster, UFO, or ghost. Despite the lack of conclusive evidence I too keep watching these shows. Perhaps my standards have slipped?

Whatever the case, New Scientist has an article that made me want to write about this topic. The article discusses how researchers are investigating if strong magnetic fields can cause the human brain to experience paranormal phenomenon.

He devised a helmet with built-in conducting coils that could produce weak fields in complex, rapidly fluctuating patterns around the temporal lobes. He claimed that as many as 4 in every 5 volunteers who wore his helmet experienced a strange “ethereal presence”, which they might interpret as a dead loved one, or even as God (New Scientist, 19 November 1994, p 29).

It does appear that the human brain can be influenced by strong magnetic fields. The article goes on to discuss a more recent attempt at getting to the bottom of this.

One at a time, 80 or so volunteers were sent into the room, where they spent 50 minutes, subjected to either the magnetic fields, infrasound, both or neither. For ethical reasons they had to be told beforehand that they might experience some odd sensations, but were given no further details.

Disappointingly, however, the volunteers were just as likely to report odd sensations regardless of whether the magnetic fields and infrasound were switched on. In other words, they just got spooked by being shut in the eerie room. “If you say to suggestible people, you might experience something weird in here, some of them will,” says French.

Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister once said:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.”

Goebbels was right. Many studies have been conducted since his day which prove conclusively that humans are hard wired to seek out patterns or meaning. The problem is, sometimes a smart person can present a pattern that will fool most of the people most of the time!

Let’s close with Michael Shermer discussing how we can combat this inherent human flaw:

Yes, it was 35 years ago that an aging Muhammad Ali challenged the lean, nasty and undefeated world champion George Foreman to a showdown in the central African country then known as Zaire (now Congo).

From the blogs:

- The Way of Least Resistance has been on a roll this week! Mr. D has had two excellent and thought provoking posts. The first is a very nice piece on the role of traditional stances. The second takes ITF-style Taekwondo to task for the “sine wave” theory.

So what has prompted this “sine wave” trend in ITF taekwondo? I think it comes right back to “faux boxing”.

Much to the admonishment of my instructors I was never a “bouncer”. Granted, we did not practice ITF-style however, we did practice one part WTF and one part traditional (i.e. similar to Shotokan). During my second run in Taekwondo I was in my late 30s and trying to keep up with students that were 15 years younger. To put it simply: Faux bouncing just expended an awful lot of energy that ol’ Bob did not have to spend! Up until the mid-belt ranges my strategy worked. Relying on my previous run in Taekwondo, a little slipping and evasion from boxing, and Taekwondo fundamentals I was usually able to beat people 15 years younger than me. That all changed after mid-belt. What happened is their technical skills caught up with their strength, speed, and stamina. This meant that I usually lost and on one occasion I had my ass handed to me on a platter!

- Can’t afford a kettlebell? Try a sandbag!

I have been working with the sandbag for a few weeks and can feel a difference.

- Here we have another homemade Mook Jong.

Call it a Mook Jong, Muk Jong, Muk Yan Jong, or just a wooden dummy, it’s an essential training tool of various martial arts, especially Wing Chun. I don’t study Wing Chun, but I do study a relative art, Jeet Kune Do. Furthermore, with my Filipino Martial Arts study, such a tool is handy.

- Zimmer has a nice post that covers all types of contact.

The point I am trying to make is you do not have any obligation to spar with anyone that does not go by the rules.

- Martial Development shows us how to defend against wild animals.

If you’re being chased by an angry bull, and then you notice you’re also being chased by a swarm of bees, it doesn’t really change things.

The videos:

In honor of their 35th anniversary lets salute two of the greatest boxers ever to lace up the gloves!

I’m not sure what to make of this one? However I do like that 1970s-style mustache!
