Hey String Burn Live!

I really loved the show.  Sometimes I couldn’t catch it cause getting up before 12 on Saturday was tough, but when I did catch it, it was extremly enjoyable.  A show where yo-yos are the main and only subject?  Thats awesome!

It brought a lot of the community together.  Viewers converged with many other yo-yoers that they never would meet any other way.

The reviews were sick and reliable.  Plus you gave the yo-yos away, which was so cool of you.  It would have been cooler is I would have won one… (tee hee aren’t I funny).  The trivia questions were great as well; it taught some old school knowledge to a lot of new players.

Sad to see it leave, and I wish all of you the best.  I know you didn’t want to hear this but you should try to bring it back sometime!  I would love to see a revival.

Thanks again for all the yo-yo love.  It was truly fantastic.

3 Questions

One: I hear you guys talk about ‘Full sized’ , ‘under sized’ , ‘mid sized’ ect yoyos. Could you clarify what a yo yo ‘over sized’ or ‘under sized.’

Two: I was wondering what a good single A yo yo would be for in the dark. I prefer to use metal and heard about light kits, but i dont know anything about them. I considered Glow in the dark but I afraid it will lose it charge after a few hours, and all the light-up yoyos i find are looping yoyos. :’(

Three: I saw BoxThor wearing a Save Deth t shirt and I saw JohnBot wearing a Fresh Till Deth t shirt. Is Deth some yoyo thing or am i just not up on the times?

Hey String Burn LIVE!

First I want to thank you once again for the Cuper 360 spintop I won a few weeks back on Episode 51. In the immortal words of McDonalds, “I’m loving it.” I’m really digging that you’re doing spintop shows, hopefully there will be a lot more in the future.

I also want to give a tip for spintop beginners. When starting out it’s rather easy to chuck the top, string, and button across the room on a hard throw, which even experienced spintoppers do from time to time. To prevent this, what I do, is double loop a rubber band or hair tie around the two fingers holding the string and button. This make the string and button a lot more secure. When doing this there will be a few tricks you won’t be able to do easily, but the trade off is a lot less broken items in your house. I always do this when playing inside as an extra safety measure.

I got a spyy skyy chaser and don’t buy it off yoyoexpert because your clear pad will come off(Kirby do a sad face). And I love this yoyo. Also i think that more people should get into yoyoing but they don’t because they suck at it and don’t know how to persevere for example yesterday I was yoyoing at IN-n-OUT and this teenage girl and her boy friend where aimlessly staring at my yoyo so while I was yoyoing half of the crowd was staring at me when I was just an Innocent kid getting a burger.

Jensen Kimmet’s BAC winning Freestyle will be on ABC TODAY on the ESPN Sports Saturday Show. – This was reported on yoyoskills.com and I also received an email from Gabe Lozano with a heads up.  Apparently ESPN contacted Gabe to use his video of Jensen’s BAC winning Freestyle and it is going to air today on ABC.  I think it’s on at 4pm central time, on ABC, check your local listings, the name of the show is ESPN Sports Saturday.

This is so cool.  The Bay College in Escanaba Michigan is in the process of building the worlds largest yo-yo. This was reported on yoyofactorys blog.  Check this out.  They expect to complete construction any day now, and they are going to do the world record attempt in early July.

I really love your show. It’s been my humble opinion that your show is more entertaining than fourteen monkeys all trying to write Shakespeare while playing gramophones. As much as that would please me, I’d love to have you know that my recent yo-yo purchase was all decided because of your avid review of the Addiction 2 by Spyy. I believe you all did a very good job making it out to be a good throw to purchase. I would also like to ask here in this email to Kirby about the exact number of SPYY shirts he owns. If you’ll recall a young man named Doug had a television show via Nickelodeon in the early 90′s wore such outfits and as it turned out his entire wardrobe was consumed by green vests and white undershirts. I sometimes wonder and ponder often if Kirby’s wardrobe is similar in the way of his SPYY t-shirts. I think of these things often, string-burn. I also consider the exact elasticity of Josh Parker’s hair. In my personal opinion, it is very reminiscent of the great Conan O’Brian’s hair. It’s perfect television show hair, Josh. One could poke an eye out with the charisma that hair merits a young man.

Anyway, that’s probably enough of your time as it is. I’ll keep in touch, Stringburnlive. I love your show. I’d love it on hot-dogs if it were edible. Thank god it isn’t, hotdog condiments aren’t as entertaining to look at as your show is. I can’t say Ketchup has ever inspired me to buy a yo-yo.

1) I picked up a Team Losi Cherry Bomb at the BAC this last weekend. It is awesome for everything responsive or 1 handed looping. I have been trying to keep a FHZ responsive, but this is way better and you don’t have to keep buying Duncan stickers.

Vs Newton Concepts – The Skywalker – This is from yoyoskills.com – A new yo-yo from a startup manufactuer called Vs Newton Concepts.  Apparently they will have some at BAC this weekend, and there will be a batch ready for sale at yoyonation in the next few days!  Look at that beautiful minimalist splash… I dig it.  Width is 42mm, Diameter is 52.8mm and the weight is 65.5g and it is a c sized bearing with silicone response.  Rad.

Crucial Bearing 2 – From the crucial blog at crucialthreads.com – The crucial groove bearing had the prospect of being the next great bearing, I think it ended up being an interesting idea, but one that was accomplished with better effect by terrapin x.  This bearing looks like something new all together.  I combines the shallow groove with a very subtle concave.  I think this bearing could be a great next generation bearing, the blog says that it’s coming in August, and in Crucial time that means we might see it sometime next summer.  But I can’t wait to try it.

The Loop 900, at long last! – from yoyoskills.com – at long last yoyofactory is releasing the follow up to their popular loop 720.  The loop 900 has been a think of rumor and legend for at least 3 years, so it’s great to see some pictures and descriptions of this potentially revolutionary product.  You see the thing is the loop 900 has a little key that allows you to adjust the response system right from the side of the yo-yo.  It very much looks like a perfection of their fully adjustable starburst technology.  Great job YoYoFactory!

HSpin String-Centering large bearings – from hspin.com – Hspin has posted pictures of their new large bearing.  It is by far the most dramatic approach to the self centering bearing that we have ever seen.  It basically creates a V shaped bearing.  I hates it.  I can’t believe that this is going to be any good for yo-yoing.  When I told HSpin that, they said they would send me one to test out, so I’ll bring you an update about that later.

· Plastic Surgery / Metal Makeover ~31:28

This was my dads yo-yo its a 60′s Duncan imperial glow yo . He said he took it with him to the vietnam war when he was a navy seal . In the mid 80s he taught me how to play with this yo-yo. He later would buy me a new duncan glow yo and a midnight special. Both i still own of course . My dads glow yo had a rusted axle and burnt strings after a few loops. Sadly my dad died in 1998 , i later got the yo-yo from my mom and late last year a mod was attempted on the yo-yo and failed . If any yo-yo deserves more life its this one .

So this glow imperial has a long history of life and bringing joy in times of need. We felt that Vince was right, if any yo-yo deserves more life, it’s this one. So the Modfather went to work by replacing the inner wall with one from a new glow imperial. And then he modified it to give it a ball bearing. The string needs to be triple wrapped on the axle for it to work, but this old yo-yo has a new life, thanks to the Modfather.

Candy is more pitted than a regular finish but grinds well, but it has a reputation for eating strings.

Soda is a softer finish, easier on the string.

Sand blast is way rougher than Candy blast, can chew a string in minutes

Bead blast can range from as rough as candy to as soft as soda. gives a decent grind feel to it but can eat string.

Satin finish, a roughing of the surface with steel wool.

Raw

Polished.

Of course all of these blasted surfaces are typically anoidized which changes the look and feel of the surface.

Powder coating puts a thick plasticy surface on the yo-yo, colors are bright and vibrant.

Teflon is more rare but it’s found in the underdog yo-yo and the new ILUVYOYO coating is a teflon

And then there is nickle plating, which is as it sounds.

Hi guys my name is Daniel and I watch your show A LOT. I find your reviews very helpful and your show a lot of fun. Well, I have been wanting to purchase a new yoyo now for a while and I have narrowed the choices down to two yoyos; The onedrop P2 and the CLYW Bassalope. I know you have reviewed them both but I still couldn’t come across the best choice. Just some things to keep in mind: The Bassalope would be a LB with a silicone response- not pad. While the P2 is normal. Also, price is not a factor- but since this will be a big purchase for me I would like to only get the best yoyo out of the two. Thank You Very Much For Your Help!!!!!!!

I just wanted to say thanks for the show and give you all some props. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying it as a Podcast since early on and I’m really impressed by the amount of time, enthusiasm and energy you’ve all been putting into what is clearly a labour of love.

Criticisms? None really as I like the lo-fi, occasionally shambolic aspect of it all – it makes it more fun. Technical difficulties aside, it was a great episode this week.  I really enjoyed the tutorial on judging and hope to see more in the future.  Similar to the behind the scenes tutorial with Dan, it is great to get to learn more about the process of the show and sport itself in these tutorials.

Saturday classes have been forcing me to watch the podcast (amazing quality) or the UStream recording.  I just wanted to pass along that after a 6 hour class, SBL makes the day better.  I am a bit biased because I can’t catch the live feed currently, but I liked having the chance to send in an answer for the give away over the week (circa beysick 2 weeks ago).  I imagine this is has more flaws than the give away during the show, but the occasional opportunity to enter the give away is fun.

·         Hany Losos Drops at YoYoNation – This is reported on YoYoSkills, I believe that YoYoNation also has the Hany Hany 2.  I’ve never heard of these guys, but this yo-yo looks totally awesome.

·         Early pictures of the DoubleTake Industires BaseBoost – This delrin prototype was created by Landon Balk of 3yo3 industries for Mike Monty.  The finished product is going to be aluminum and according to Mike Monty himself “there will be a lip for thumb grinds and a inner cup designed to look like a sub-woofer.  It will also have a silicone groove.  I can’t wait for this finished product.

I’ve just recently found your show, i regret not watching it sooner:(

Anyway, you say in your review of the dingo that it’s a pocket yoyo. What exactly does that mean? As far as i can see it’s about the same size as a dv888 and that’s concidered an undersized yoyo as far as i’m informed.

I would like to hear you’re though on Flat vs Center Trac vs KK bearings? I got a center trac in my dv888 and i like it better than the stock yyf bearing. It’s loud as a truck but it seems to spin for ages compared to the stock bearing.

And last but not least, to the SBL viewers, am I the only dane watching the show?

I am a 4A player along with 1A and I have been long waiting and searching for a good Offstring (that is not $100). I have played with a lot of Offstrings in the past, including the old YYF F.A.S.T Offstring, the Yomega Xodus 2, Throw Monkey, Flying Panda, Aquarious, Hayabusa, and Big Yo. I will have to say that NONE of them have satisfied me as far as spin time, or response. Here are my thoughts on each:-The Big Yo is quite popular, with good recovery, but awkward feel and quite unresponsive on dying spins. -The Hayabusa, I personally don’t like– it is unresponsive and should be kept for beginner 5A I think. -Throw Monkey is overall good for beginners, but not cut for advanced play, same with the Flying Panda. -Xodus 2–too risky i had it come apart during throws and I lost bearings. -YYF F.A.S.T Offstring–like the Throw Monkey and Flying Panda, it is more of a beginner, except it can crack easier. - The Aquarious (my personal preference from the group listed) is overall good, but still unreliable. I have been through 4 of them, and all of them got uneven over time. I played with Aquariouses the most and they can spin long enough for a few tricks,  but still  they snag a lot, (good for regenerations, bad for long smooth play and slacks).
All in all, these are my opinions on Offstrings that I have tried. I am getting a Shinwoo Griffin Wing soon so maybe that will quench my thirst for better play a little more. If you have any advice on Offstring mods, yoyos, or anything offstring yoyo-related that can help out, I would greatly appreciate it.  I am looking for an Offstring with long spin time, stable play, and can take slacks and wraps around the bearing without snags and is not too unresponsive. Thanks!

Hey,

I found out about and started watching SBL a little over 2 weeks ago.  I gotta say, it’s a really cool show, and you guys are a lot of fun to watch.

The main reason I’m writing to you, though, is that I want to tell you about a project that I started about mid-Summer.  The name of it is Rethinkyoyo, and it’s a yoyo tutorial site.  About two days ago I just finished and uploaded my 50th tutorial, which was a major goal for me.  Although, I am still constantly making new ones.  I try to get done at least one a week.

I want to be able to teach as many people as possible with the site, and, until now, I really haven’t put any effort into getting the word out about it.  But, I think now is the time.  My goal with the site is to have tutorials that are easy to follow and easy to learn from.  So, check out the site,www.rethinkyoyo.com, and watch a tutorial or two.  I think I might have a couple of tricks on there you guys at SBL! haven’t learned yet.

  • The Return of the Museum of Yo-Yo History – The Museum of Yo-Yo History at yoyomuseum.com is a tremendous resource about the history of yo-yo that predates other yo-yo encyclopedic efforts like YoYoWiki.  The Museum is owned and run by Dave Hall from the former Dave’s Skilltoys and when that store closed in October of 2008 he closed the Museum as well.  After several requests by various people Dave Hall decided to reopen the Museum as a resource for yo-yo history.  It’s unclear at this time if the museum is going to stay open indefinitely or if this is just a limited time thing, but please check it out while it’s online and support it anyway that you can because it’s a resource like none other.
  • New Hot Pink Boyd vs Man YoYos – Reported on the Caribou blog there were  some very limited edition Bear vs Man yo-yos that featured laser engravings of a bear on one half and a man on the other.  Only 12 of these yo-yos were released at the premium price of $120 and of course they are gone.  But hot pink… sexy….

What’s up stringburn? I wanted to know about how long on average it takes a new yo-yo to be released starting from conception to being brought to market and how much of a difference would be between a small company like spyy or (insert yo-yo company name here) and a larger one like yo-yo factory?

Response from SPYY “It depends on many variables…  Mostly outside vendors like anodizers etc.  Normally I’m about 2+ months, but I’v been faster when all the

planets align on smaller runs.”

Response from One Drop – “after we conceive of a yo-yo, it takes about a week to two weeks to make a proto type.  Then we work that proto for about a month and make changes on the design, and then we repeat that process till we are happy with the result.  The first Project had 6 proto cycles, but today we are a lot more efficient in making our initial design a lot closer to what our vision is for the final product.  ”

Response from CLYW – “Depends on how many prototypes you need to make and if you hit it the first try.

Right now we’re aim for about 1.5-2 weeks for the 1st prototype.  Then 2-3 weeks for a run of say 150 yoyos.  Then 1-2 weeks for anodizing.  Then 1 week for assembly.  So if everything goes smoothly about 1-1.5 months.  Depends on the road blocks though.  Like issues with manufacturing, is the machine shop busy, special tooling required, anodizer messes up, bearings are stuck in customs … that kind of thing”

Following the news, the hosts have an in-depth review of the Henry’s Python. The Python is an offstring yoyo that is a whopping 95 grams. They compare it to another popular offstring yoyo, the YYJ Aquarius. The Python sports the Henry’s Axis-System. The retail of the Henry’s Python is about $50. Host, Josh Parker, also compares it to the Cream, PGM, FHZ, M1, Spyder, and Josh’s mouse. Next, local yoyoer, Sean Sauter, teaches the “Dipsy Doo” that uses the ladder mount. This week’s question to snag the Henry’s Python is, “What stand-up comedian fantasized about being a yoyo master on his Comedy Central routine?” The correct answer is Mitch Hedberg and the winner was “mrcnja”.
