Lapidus-Saltz

If you’re a smoker, and people around you know it, you’re probably barraged by demands to stop. Some are caring and kindly. Others abrasive, even disgusted. Do the people you love quote scary facts and figures at you? Does it make you want to stop? No? Thought so.

Or maybe you yourself want to stop smoking. You may even be heard to say that you desperately want to stop smoking. Uh-oh. Desperation may make it harder to stop.

So is there no way out? Nothing you can do? There is something. And it’s startlingly simple. Here it is: Let smoking cessation be a desire for you. Something you want—and choose—to do.

Even if your doctor, your spouse, and your best buddies say “You absolutely must stop smoking!” make it that you want to stop smoking. It’s a desire. Desires are more compelling than orders, aren’t they? That’s because orders make you angry and you want to ignore them.

Give an adult an order and he or she quickly reverts to a willful five-year-old. “I will NOT!” The voice may have gotten deeper but the attitude stays the same.

What if you were ordered to eat your favorite cake? Maybe you’d eat it. Maybe not. But most certainly it wouldn’t be as fun as choosing to eat your favorite cake.

Desires, rather than orders, threats, or commands, are alluring. Desirable. Seductive.

They invite you to do something, and let you know it’s what you’ve wanted to do all along. So invite yourself to be a nonsmoker, the way you’d invite someone special to a lovely dinner party. How to do that?

First, think of what it would be like to be a nonsmoker. Might your hair smell fresher? What about your breath and clothes? Might your teeth look whiter without nicotine to stain them yellow and, eventually, brown? Would you prefer to keep your teeth as you get older instead of succumbing to gum disease and tooth loss, as many smokers eventually do?

How about fewer trips to the dry cleaners to keep your clothes odor-free? What would you do with the savings? After some years, they could be substantial. And would you enjoy having fewer age lines, and fresher, clearer skin as you age? Does improved breathing sound good to you? It should because it can mean appearing younger, walking and running easily, and having more stamina for most activities, including sex.

Here’s another benefit you might enjoy: lower insurance costs. Extra money to put toward a vacation or your next shiny, new car. Why lower insurance costs? That’s because many insurance companies penalize smokers because they’re statistically likely to run up higher health-care bills. And if we’re talking about life insurance, nonsmokers tend to live longer and healthier.

But if you’re considering just lying about being a nonsmoker, beware. Yes, beware. Because if your insurance company were to discover that your illness was caused or exacerbated by your smoking, and their records show you claimed to be a nonsmoker, they might choose to fight against paying health care costs. Is it really worth all that just to put a white stick between your lips and inhale tar and other poisons?

But that white stick seemed to do something for you that we haven’t taken into account yet. Fair is fair, so let’s make a list.

It gave you something to do.
It made you look like you were doing something so you didn’t seem lonely.
It helped you avoid snacking, so you think it kept your weight down.
It let you disconnect from others when you wanted to.
It helped you connect with others. Other smokers. You hung out together outside once
no-smoking laws forbade you to smoking indoors.

Fair enough.

The important question is: do you prefer to avoid early aging, smelly hair, yellow, brown or missing teeth, not to mention the serious illnesses caused or made worse by smoking— or do you prefer to smoke?

Another good question is: Can you get something to do, look like you’re doing something, choose healthier, low calorie snacking to stay lean, and find other ways to connect and disconnect from others as you choose? If you can, you simply don’t need to smoke.

But smokers like to smoke because when they were young, they learned to connect it with independence. The Marlboro Man looked pretty independent, didn’t he? Maybe, but not as much when he was hooked up to oxygen so he could breathe.

So if you love independence and doing what you want to do instead of being told, the answer is simple. You can choose independence from cigarette companies, restaurants that ban smoking, friends who urge you to smoke with them and friends who nag you to stop smoking. You can just choose to quit smoking. Simply because you—and nobody else—said so. And that’s that. Feels pretty powerful, independent, and freeing—doesn’t it?

Copyright 2007 by Wendy Lapidus-Saltz. That's what veteran science writer, Rita Carter discovered as she began reading about bi-polar personalities for Mapping the Mind. Emerging research shows that several, "personalities are made and kept separate in the human brain" ... of everyone.

Want a glimpse of how many you have? Depending on the situation and who you're are around, different people pop out and speak for you. If it is of some comfort, you do play one main character, much of the time, in the unfolding movie that is your life story. Discover Yourselves At Last.

Yet even the argumentative or otherwise darker personalities are in your life for a reason. In Carter's newest book, Multiplicity, you can get to know your "people", the one who plays the most likeable role and the one who keeps getting you in trouble.

In a conversational style, Carter describes the research on our multiple personality brains. In the second part of the book, find exercises to understand more about the multiple you. As a quiet child I'm still surprised at the diverse personalities that appear out of me in my multiple, overlapping careers, as a high tech exec, journalist and, perhaps most peculiarly, public speaker.

Imagine doing these exercises with a spouse, best friend of co-workers at a retreat. It would be a vulnerable time - and an opportunity to explore ways you can bring out the best side in each other more often.

Combine this self-discovery and how you relate to others with the fascinating work by Steven Pinker, Helen Palmer, Dan Pink, Marty Seligman and Marcus Buckingham and you may find that you become happier, get along better with others and get more done with less stress. (I'm stumbling along in my own practice here.)

Possible Side Benefits

• You can design a more satisfying work and life.

• You won't let somebody else determine your behavior. With heightened self-awareness of your many roles, you'll be more aware of your hot buttons and the type of people and situations who set them off. You can protect yourself from being "primed" to react.

Who links to my website?

Parents Personalities

One of the biggest issues that parents face is how to raise their children. This issue is complicated when the parents, themselves, have different ideas of how to parent. Parents who have very different personalities quite often have a lot of difficulty agreeing on parenting methods. Here are a few quick tips that parents should remember when the have problems agreeing on how to parent their children.

Never make your spouse look bad in front of your children. By saying to your children that you don't understand your spouse or that the spouse is wrong, you are telling your children that their other parent is a "bad guy". This puts your children in a bad position. It makes them feel like they have to pick sides. It isn't your children's position to be your "best friend" or "counselor". If you are upset with your spouse, talk to your spouse. Don't put your children in the middle.

Another key to effective parenting when you disagree is to agree on consistency and follow-through. This is more important than perfect parenting. What I mean by this is to agree on how children should be disciplined. Once the discipline has been set, both stick to it. Don't go behind your spouse's back and tell your child how wrong the spouse was with his/her decision about the discipline. This will confuse your child. Your child will then lose respect for both parents. The child starts to reason that if the parents are unable to agree and work together, then they do not support each other. If they do not support each other, they can't support the child.

As parents with different parenting styles, you should take a proactive approach to the consistency and follow-through. For problems that come up on a reoccurring basis, set the discipline in advance. For instance, if your child doesn't clean his/her room, already have discipline in place that both parents agree on. If the child's room doesn't get clean, then the child doesn't get computer or television time that evening. This is just an example. You know what works best with your child.

If you and your spouse are having difficulties with your differences and can't seem to make each other look good to your children, you might want to consider going to counseling. When parents are constantly fighting and making each other look bad, it is always the children who suffer. Sometimes the children will blame themselves for these problems. Even worse is when the parents blame the children for the problems. This will cause the children to have poor self esteem and a lack of confidence.

It is important to agree to be different. The world is full of different people. It is alright for your children to see that you are different. But it is also important for them to see that you agree that you are different and cherish those differences instead of hate them. Children who have the opportunity to see that it is alright to be different will not only feel more confident to be themselves, but they will also accept other people more easily, especially if they are different. You can provide your child with a very healthy environment that will allow the child to grow and explore more freely.

Trust Yourself

Trust and Acceptance of

Yourself and Your Power

by Larry Wayne and Grace Johnston

Confidence and inner trust are one and the same in the emotional state. Confidence is your ability to cope and depend upon yourself to create a reality that is dependable. If you don't have confidence, you will create a reality that you cannot depend upon.

ie: You may have faith and trust in others, but if you don't have it in yourself, you are lost.

Trust and acceptance - which go hand in hand, are the most powerful tools you have, the most potent energy available to you.

When you have confidence - or, trust, within you, it produces a positive energy that stills doubt, worry, fear and negative expectations. It has a profound effect on you and others.

Positive energy is more powerful than negative energy.

Just think what would happen, if you trusted all your choices and accepted all your decisions - you would be successful in just about everything you do.

If you don't trust yourself, you don't trust others.

If you don't trust yourself, it shows up in others. In other words, you attract people and situations that you cannot trust.

ie: Others accept when you know what you are and do is valuable.

The reason you don't trust in yourself and your power, the reason you don't accept your talents, gifts and abilities like imagination, free will, self love, is because you learned not to trust, not to accept.

The reason you don't trust yourself is because it's a learned emotion, but the actions of others should not affect you.

Now - you must change it. Transmute it, reverse it. Go the opposite - and choose to trust, decide to accept. This is how you get trust and acceptance into your life again.

If you do not trust and accept yourself and your power, you will not share with your human self the elements that produce oneness and success, you will not let it in.

It's an issue of lack of self value, lack of self worth and lack of self esteem.

You will never allow yourself to be, do, or have what you truly need and desire in life, unless you value yourself.

The biggest mistake you can make is trying to earn worth.

Saying; "Someday, I will be worthy". If you spend your life trying to attain it, you will fail.

The human must recognize and understand its worth and value, the importance of its existence in order to use and create with the power that is activated within.

You cannot expect humans to stay together, if life is a continual stream of broken promises.

This includes the inner and outer human too.

If you don't heal this breach of confidence or inner trust, it leads to what is called shamed based behavior.

Shame cuts you off from all that is real - shame is a learned emotion and when reinforced and internalized, you no longer feel shame, you are shame.

You are not allowed to make mistakes, you are a mistake. You are not forgivable not only for what you have done, but for who you are.

Eventually, you decide that you are defective, flawed, or the evil one and in time this destructive energy will do you in.

ie: People die of shamed based behavior all the time.

It's so important to see this crisis of confidence or inner trust within you and to end it.

Unification, thy name is trust!

Trust is a unity factor. It unites the human and spirit, power and control, thought,

emotion, action and energy. It affects the whole of your being, it causes miracles to happen.

Instead of searching for trust and acceptance from others, tell yourself you already have it, then use it, become it.

You have the power to do something special for yourself. What will it be?

The simple solution, is to accept that you are value in this moment and stop judgement. You must accept the choice, thought, emotion, action, even if a little at first. Accept - this is the way to accept.

It is valuing your personal abilities and what they can give to you - not others.

Trust is like a two edged sword.

1. Trusting yourself enough to be, do and have the things you want in life, to create the
reality you desire.

2. Trusting yourself not to do the things that create pain and suffering. Self sacrifice, self sabotage, self punishment. To say no, if it doesn't seem appropriate or right to you, regardless of who and what it is.

If you cannot trust that what you think, say, feel and do is enough, then don't waste your
time. Just continue to be a very humanly human - be like everyone else. This may seem harsh
but most do not understand the devastating damage that this lack of trust in yourself has on
you and your life.

Ask yourself;

"What does the issue of trust mean to you? What aspect of self lacks in trust?"

Know this and focus on that specific area - resolve the issue of trust in the aspect
lacking. This is so important.

And remember, don't try to do it all at once. Trust and accept, even a little at first and
you will feel the difference that this makes in your life.

It's the little things that brings the big things!

How to Communicate Effectively with Difficult and Challenging Personalities

In an ideal world, employees, colleagues, and bosses would coexist with the most difficult and challenging personalities. However, we know that the ideal world can elude the most well intended among us. Knowledge gained from having tested the communications styles of more than 2,000 professionals in seven countries, is intended to provide helpful hints when communicating face-to-face with challenging personalities - inside or outside of the work environment. Knowing how to adjust your communications style will improve your ability to communicate effectively with difficult people.

Researchers, articulating the importance of personality and its influence on how people communicate, stress that every individual develops a primacy in one of four major behavioral functions: Controller, Analyzer, Supporter, or Promoter. Individuals tend to get along better with those whose communication style is similar to their own. Conversely, we have the most difficult time communicating and relating with someone who is in the exact opposite quadrant as ours. If you know your own communication style and the style of the other person, you are much better equipped to communicate in a manner that seems more open and trustworthy to the other person. As communication barriers start to fall, your ability to relate is enhanced because you are more in-sync with each other.

The study of the four personality types is not an attempt to "pigeon hole" anyone into a specific quadrant, but rather to provide information that will assist a person to align his or her communication with the communication style of the other person. The goal, then, is to assist us to be on the same "wave length" as the other person. The following will help you recognize each of these communications styles and assist you to present your message so that it will be acceptable to the other person.

Controller - The controller is a doer and often the driving force within an organization. This person leads others. He is characterized by emphasis on action and results. This person thrives on getting things done here and now. Just as the alpha dog must lead the pack, the controller must be first and must lead. Because he places high standards on himself and others, he is likely to be seen as constructively impatient and tireless.

When communicating or when working with the typical controller, be prepared to move fast and to be tested. Expect the controller to argue, interrupt, disagree, raise his voice, and challenge your thoughts. Keep in mind that this behavior is not an attack on you. The controller's communications is not personal; it is just the way he or she is.

Analyzer - He is characterized by analysis, details, logic, and systematic inquiry, and being a bit stiff. This person functions in a steady, tenacious manner, finding great satisfaction in identifying a problem, weighing options carefully, and testing them to determine the best possible solution. The analyzer is of great value as a logical thinker who provides objectivity to a complex problem. Don't expect him to be the life of the party, but he will show up on time!

When communicating with or when working with analyzers, be well organized, have details lined up, and plan each meeting carefully. Speak slowly as he processes information more carefully than most. Pause as you speak and ask questions to make sure you are both on the same page of your topic of discussion. One of the surest means for creating a communication barrier with the analyzer is to generalize. Remember: think specifics when communicating with the analyzer.

Supporter - A concern for people dominates the thinking and behavior of the supporter style. He is often sought out for his ability to empathize and for his patience with others during a time of crisis. An understanding listener, he can identify change in ways that reduce conflicting forces and increase the likelihood of cooperation and teamwork. A weakness among supporters is their tendency to become emotional, which may be viewed as a substitution for taking action. Of the four personality types, the supporter is the most likely to flinch - to back away - in a time of conflict.

Effective communication with the supporter is best achieved through an informal, open and personalized approach. Maintain ample physical space between yourself and the supporter type. While you can be enthusiastic, even somewhat aggressive when communicating with the controller, the supporter will balk at signs of aggressive communications.

Promoter - The big picture person has just arrived. The promoter style is characterized by heavy
emphasis on ideas, innovation, concepts, and long-range thinking. The promoter will challenge you - not because she is hostile - but because she has learned the value of constant probing to uncover new ideas.

A fast and deep thinker, she questions herself and others. She is not inclined to take things for granted. The promoter is seen as a leader and a visionary capable of seeing new possibilities that others do not sense. This is a person with a strong ego who can come across as "superior" and can be condescending in her communications. Quick thinking and a quick wit are characteristics of the promoter.

When communicating with the promoter, probe for her ideas and concepts. Ask questions of this person. Because so much of this individual's ego is invested in what she does and how she does it, communicate your awareness of her ideas, plans, and most of all, her vision. Promoters love to talk about their plans. Let them have at it. Sit back and absorb.

Do you know your style and the styles of those with whom you are trying to communicate? Engage them knowing communications styles and when you do - your relationship with the challenging personality will change for the better.

Do You Have Multiple Personalities

The human being is not only what he knows about himself, but also what belongs to his immense primitive conscience, which is wild and evil. That's why we observe the existence of many personalities in some patients' psychic spheres. They have absurd characteristics, since they are derived from the primitive conscience and their actions are always harmful.

It is confirmed that some psychotic patients have double or multiple personalities and they are dominated by one of the personalities when their behaviour is opposite to the behaviour of their main personality. However, this is a very common phenomenon that occurs with many normal or neurotic people, but since their second personality is not so different from the main one, they are unaware of their multiple personality.

How can we perceive the domination of another personality in someone's psychic sphere?

When someone is angry, the domination of the wild content that invades the human conscience is quite visible. That's why we characterize very nervous people saying that: "They are not themselves" when they start to shout and display a very violent behaviour.

Angry people are able to do horrible things against those they love the most without being able to control themselves. Later, they can only regret for having done what they did, but then it's already too late...

The worse, however, is that they never know when other personalities start dominating them if they are not in a situation that is as well defined as the situations wherein they are very angry.

Unfortunately, the danger is very big, because these other personalities can only damage everyone's psychic sphere and create terrible problems, destroying houses and lives. They appear in someone's behaviour depending on the situations they are in, depending on the stimuli they are receiving from their environment and depending on how advanced is the process of the domination of the wild conscience.

This is a very complicated matter, that's why I had to study and observe many factors before I could dare to present my work to the world. I couldn't alarm everyone without giving them the solution they needed, because the bitter truth is that everyone is vulnerable to their wild conscience's influence and domination.

Through dream interpretation, everyone can learn how to protect themselves from this danger and defend themselves from the wild conscience's attacks. This is a monster and it wants to destroy the human side of our conscience. We have to be very careful.

The domination of other personalities derived from the wild side of our conscience is a very complex subject, not only because it happens all the time with all psychological types and it varies according to the characteristics of each type, but because there are too many situations and stimuli that can provoke the invasion of the wild content in the human conscience.

Fortunately though, through dream interpretation we can understand how to maintain the control of our behaviour and to completely eliminate the influence of the wild and evil primitive conscience we inherit.

In the past, scientific dream interpretation was very difficult, but now it has been simplified and explained in a basic way that everyone can understand how it works because without the clear translation of the dream's meaning we cannot be helped with this knowledge.

Prevent Depression and Craziness through the scientific method of Dream Interpretation discovered by Carl Jung and simplified by Christina Sponias, a writer who continued Jung's research in the unknown region of the human psychic sphere.

How To Appeal To Different Personalities

Introduction

We all think differently. We read different books, listen to different music, and have different opinions on things.

Yet with our websites, we often develop the voice, copy, and style with what we want and how we do things. What about the customer? Chances are, the customer won’t feel and do things the same way you do. The site must be client-centric and visitor-focused.

Keep the customer in mind and construct a website that leads the customer to buy your product or service. Your copy and design will grab the attention of the right visitors and get them to act.
So, when the customer hits your site with the obvious question of ‘what’s in it for me?’ You’ll grab their attention if you’ve constructed a website that considers their wants and speaks in their voice. You’ve got to know what the customer wants to hear, and how they need to hear it to make the sale.

“But”, you say, “I’m me. How can I write copy or talk in a way which appeals to another person voice and style?” The answer is to understand your customer and speak to them personally. It can be a little like dealing with Jekyll and Hyde, but once you’ve get the knack of it you’ll find that split personalities are easier to handle than you think!

Personality types

Take the following different personality types:

An easy going likes a personal approach. They will ask the question “Why is your product the best?” To satisfy the easy going person, provide reassurance and opinions. These personalities are humanistic in nature so testimonials and such appeal to them and may help them move through the conversion process.

An analytical person is all business and detail oriented. They are disciplined, and will ask you “How does your product differ from others?” For analytical people, provide evidence. A simple paragraph explaining your products will not suffice, you need to give this personality type in-depth information about your process, details about your products/services, etc.

A spontaneous person likes brief, to-the-point answers! The expressive person will ask “What are the benefits and how can this (product/service) help me?” For this person, you need to display the points, give them the reason to buy your products or services, and help them convert right away by placing call to actions throughout your copy.

An assertive person is powerful and strategic. They will want to know “What can your product do for me and why is it the best?” This personality is competitive in nature and always wants the best, wants to know why it’s the best, and wants to see the advantages of your service/product over the rest. For this include person comparisons, assurances, and satisfaction guarantees.

The method

“You mean I have to write different copy to suit all these different personalities?” Don’t panic, not at all. With careful thought, you can combine the approaches and come away with something for everyone. Take a look.

“At INVESP, our approach is customized to meet your objectives and concerns. Your results are guaranteed. Explore our methodology to discover how hundreds of clients have been satisfied. Our solutions include:

• Traffic builder designed to drive more online visitors to your site.

• Optimized conversion solution designed to lead users through the conversion process.

• Community builder designed to keep your traffic coming back to your site for more.”

Different types of people will all find something here they like.

• Easy going, humanistic personalities will identify with the ‘hundreds of clients’.

• Those that are analytical will identify with ‘methodology’ and most likely click on that link.

• The spontaneous will explore like the list of solutions and their immediate benefits.

• Assertive/competitive people will like the ‘guaranteed results’ and satisfaction guaranteed.

Something for everyone, pretty easy concept. However, before imploring this technique, you must identify who your clients are. The majority of your clients may be analytical and spontaneous in nature, so you would have to try to appeal to them mostly. Identify with your customer and they are more likely to complete the sale, so start appealing to their personal side. Remember, the site must be constructed for them, not you.

Personalities and Time Management

The marketplace is swarming with topics on time management and few include personality types, which amazes me, since our personalities play a large role in time management. For example, we have disabilities, spontaneous, and so-called normal individuals, so how can one article tell us how to manage our time? Extensively I studied human behaviors and learned that all of us are different in more ways than science or researchers can explain.

None of us has all the answers, but some of us can lead you on a path to time management if the right words fall into place. In addition, if we have an idea of what type of person we are, then we are well on our way to finding the solution for managing time. Time is complicated, since the bible shows us that one day to God is a thousand years. Moreover, man has his own ideas of time. So therefore, when time is used, we must ask ourselves, “Is it used wisely.” We can start by looking at our personality to determine which plan works better for us in managing time.

Personalities:

From beginning of time we all were created with our own personality type, and some of us went astray with the misguidance of researchers, experts, and so on. The basic rules were laid out however, when experts, philosophers and researchers set out to determine what types of persons make up the world. Taking for example the spontaneous personality type, we can see it differs from the neatly type.

The spontaneous types often are unorganized, and fail to plan. Spontaneous individuals have an advantage since the focus on one day at a time vs. living each day on a schedule. The disadvantage is that the spontaneous individuals suffer throughout their life, since a time management plan is not in view. In order to cultivate a neatly individual, you would need to work with the personality type, by allowing them to act as themselves, but manipulating a neatly view in the plan. Spontaneous individuals require the need to be free and loose. So therefore there desks are most likely going to be free and loose: papers flying everywhere.

To put a spontaneous individual in order, is allowing the person to work multi-tasking projects, which often benefit these types the best. If the person is multi-tasking, he or she is putting time management in focus. Still, the focus is there, but the plans are not in action, so therefore it pays to stay focus of your own individuality to find out what works best for your personality type. There is no single plan for these types of individuals that work the best. The neatly types have very little problem in time management, yet they have problems in other areas. Some of us may see them as perfectionist, but in fact, the neatly types are compensating. Regardless each personality type has its own individuality and learning your personality is the open door to a successful time management plan.

Color Personalities

When you are talking with prospects you must learn to listen more than what you talk. If you truly listen to the person you will discover which color personality they have and you will know how to talk with them. This is not an observation, a theory or an opinion. This is a statement of scientific fact. Decades of research, all the way back to 1936, prove conclusively that the normal person is not in control of themselves, rather they are controlled by their subconscious mind. And, because all this happens automatically, there is, in fact, no real control at all being exerted in the ordinary behaviour of everyday life.

Reflect on this for a few moments. Someone pulls out in front of you in traffic - someone you've never met, don't know and are unlikely to ever come across again - and you automatically get agitated, annoyed, even stressed. Clients have said to me that the morning commute leaves them totally stressed out and exhausted before the working day ever gets going! Or, someone you claim to love - a husband, wife, boyfriend, girlfriend - does something silly like squeezing the toothpaste from the middle of the tube and you automatically lose your head. Indeed, it is a common fact that most domestic arguments, fights, even murders arise over something silly or insignificant.

As normal people, we spend our lives reacting. These reactions are automatic - driven by our subconscious mind in a way that is so deeply rooted that we seem to have no control. The reactions just happen, often making matters worse rather than better. In fact, the subconscious mind's automatic processes (known as automaticity to psychologists) are a finely tuned set of responses that enable us complete habitual tasks without having to pay them any attention. Unfortunately, as we go through our adult lives, most things become habitual and, as a result, completely automatic. We are no more than robots, living lives created by reactions which are automatically dictated by our subconscious programming. We are out of control.

That subconscious programming was "installed" through "snapshot learning" when you and I were young and impressionable. People and events that made a big enough impression on us during our formative years were freeze-framed into our deep subconscious. Those snapshots are re-run every time we encounter similar events during our adult life and, as a result, automatically create our spontaneous, thoughtless, mindless, reaction. In other words, we react to what's happening in the present moment based on programs that are decades out of date. Little wonder husbands beat wives, wives beat husbands, bosses bully workers, etc, etc, etc. The list is endless and, as normal people, we are completely unable to stop the cycle of reactive, destructive behaviour.

We need to regain control. If we do regain control, something extraordinary happens. We start acting - doing the right thing, doing what is most important, most appropriate and most effective just at the right moment. We start creating a different set of behaviours, a different "chain reaction" - because if we change our behaviour towards others, others (even if they never regain control of their minds) will at the very least react differently. We create a different experience - a different life.

We regain control by stopping. Stopping ourselves in our tracks, to see if we are behaving in the best possible way or if we are just knee-jerking reacting like all the other mindless morons. We cannot, however, stop ourselves in our tracks, or call ourselves to attention, unless we relearn how to pay attention. As children, we were attention experts. If we got a new toy, we used all our five senses to fully experience the toy - we saw, felt, heard, smelled and tasted it. As adults, I send my clients for a walk to experience their five senses and some of them return chewing bits of hedge or ivy because they couldn't get a handle on the taste that was already there in their mouths beforehand!!

Normal adults cannot pay attention (scientific fact yet again) - and, yet, paying attention is the only key you need to open the door into creating a life free of reaction, the life that you really, really want. Paying attention enables you take control of your mind - because paying attention to what you are experiencing here and now stops your subconscious mind paying attention to the programs that are decades out of date (the programs which otherwise dictate your automatic reactions). You have to be "abnormal" to pay attention. You have to become again like a little child - childlike not childish.

So, starting right now, see, feel, hear, smell and taste where you are. Take five or ten minutes every day to do just this. It will be mechanical, seem pointless, at first. But, I can assure you (as can many Universities from Milan to Chicago from East London to Stanford) that doing something so simple will change the very fabric of your life and will enable you be the most effective, most efficient, most successful, most happy person you can be - effortlessly.

Control Your Life

"No evil propensity of the human heart is so powerful that it may not be subdued by discipline." ~ - Seneca (Roman philosopher, mid-1st century AD)

The secret of self-control is using your faith as an anchor. No matter what your faith may be, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Christian, Hinduism, or another of the world's major religions, faith is the key. Every religion teaches that you must have faith to succeed in your spiritual and everyday life. As a Christian I turn to my belief in Christ. This has been the power that has changed my life for the better.

One of the main reasons I attend church, beyond worshipping the Lord, is to be around church "brother and sisters" who are quite a positive influence on me and help me to reinforce my personal values. However when you are not around other believers of like mind you will have to exercise control of yourself through self-discipline.

Steps to Help You Exercise Control

Step 1 - Admit your problems

The starting point for developing self-control is to face what is necessary to do. You cannot fix what you may not believe is there. As difficult as it may be, take 100% responsibility for your actions and your desires. I use prayer as a weapon against lack of self-control.

Step 2 - Avoid unnecessary temptation

Make life easy on yourself and don't put yourself in situations where you'll face temptation when you don't have to. If you struggle with alcohol and drugs, don't go into a bar or around drug users. Do what you need to do in order to avoid temptation.

Step 3 - Be accountable to yourself

Find someone who will check up on you and help keep you on track. Under ideal circumstances this would be your spouse or companion. You can also ask a close friend to help or even your church's pastor or minister. If you are tempted to do something you know is wrong or spend time with a person(s) whose behavior may be damaging to you then "pray it away". It is amazing what prayer or in this case "talking back" to your impulses can accomplish. God's grace gives us the power to do the right thing.

Step 4 - Master your moods

Don't be someone whose moods flow with the wind. If people have to tip-toe around you, you won't have many friends. Individuals with "Jekyll and Hyde" personalities are not people to spend time with unless you are getting paid to do it.

Step 5 - Believe you can change your situation

Be proactive in this by planting positive seeds in your mind regularly through prayer, meditation, and taking in positive materials (books, audios, etc). Monitor your thought life. The way you think determines the way you feel; the way you feel determines the way you act; and the way you act determines your outcome.

Self-control brings with it the good feeling of confidence and self-assuredness. Your life stays on the right path and doing the right thing becomes habit as opposed to sacrifice.

Self-control and self-discipline are key factors in any success you are seeking in life. Without self-discipline, you are unlikely to achieve anything of lasting value or importance.

Source: Titus 2:11-12 (New King James Version)

11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, 12 teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age.

(c)2009 THJ & Associates, LLC

Theodore Henderson, DTM - Distinguished Toastmaster -- The founder of THJ & Associates is a business coach who transforms the business lives of individuals who want to use biblical principles and Christian faith as a guide of success for all of the key areas of their life; spiritual, social, personal, family, and business. In my own experience, even when I don't think a certain individual fits into his or her sign initially, as time goes on, I find that they indeed do fit with startling accuracy. Certainly, lumping everyone on earth into 12 personality types seems absurd, but surprisingly it seems to work, and work well.

Practical uses for knowing the personality traits of the various zodiac signs and adjusting accordingly are limitless. Those who are dating should absolutely study their potential mate's zodiac sign for clues as to what they are really like. Certain signs are just not compatible, and the potential for failure is much higher with these couples. Employers could make good use of the basics of zodiac personalities to better fit prospective employees into their organizations, though most are totally unaware that this option is available. Friends, family, co-workers - every single person we come into contact with in our lives carries with them zodiac traits that could vastly help us in our understanding of them and how they think and react.

Remember, however, that you are always in control of your own fate. If you were born under a sign that is stubborn, for instance, it is up to you to modify that trait in your own life so that it will not be a hindrance to you. Remember, these are general traits, and you have the power to change anything you don't like in your own personal profile.

Having said that, there are certain terms that must be understood to fully reap the benefits of astrological profiling.

First off, each zodiac sign is assigned a planet, or ruler with specific traits for each planet. The relationships of the planets to zodiac traits is complex, with big differences in outcome based on where the plant was at the time of birth. Note that two signs (Pisces and Scorpio) have two ruling planets. This is because the relatively modern discoveries of Neptune and Pluto had to be worked into the mix. A brief description of the meanings, both good and bad, are as follows:

Sun - (Leo) The sun is the ruler of all the other plants. It is the giver of life. It represents the essence of self. This can good, bringing fame and wealth, or it can be bad, bringing pessimism or poverty. It is the most important planet in the zodiac.

Moon - (Cancer) The moon represents the inner self, intuition, and subconscious mind. The moon can be a powerfully good force, but can also be an unstable, detrimental force particularly regarding the mind and thought processes, as alluded to in the term "lunatic."

Mercury - (Gemini, Virgo) A fast, restless planet that is connected with intellect and communication. It can mean great communication and "mercurial success", or it can mean trickery and lies.

Venus - (Taurus, Libra) As most of us already know, Venus rules love, beauty, attraction, and possessions. It can mean refinement and culture, or it can succumb to idleness and promiscuity

Mars - (Aries, Scorpio) Mars is connected with energy and action. When controlled, it can mean steady progress towards the top through positive action, or it can mean violence and uncontrolled, impulsive energy.

Jupiter - (Sagittarius, Pisces) As the biggest entity in the solar system, Jupiter is associated with luck, wealth, wisdom, and generosity. Alternatively, it can also be associated with excessiveness, greed, lies, and selfishness.

Saturn - (Capricorn, Aquarius) Discipline and responsibility are the by-words for Saturn. In the good sense, a Saturn influence can mean fidelity in marriage, ambition, and success. Poorly influenced, it can mean inflexibility, selfishness, and lack of humor.

Uranus - (Aquarius) Things that are unexpected will happen with a Uranus influence. Those with favorable aspects are independent and inventive, but under unfavorable aspects can be eccentric, stiff, and unreliable.

Neptune - (Pisces) Spirituality, psychic ability, and intuition are hallmarks of those influenced by Neptune. However, if the influence is negative, expect deception, illusion, and secrets.

Pluto - (Scorpio) When favorable, the influence of Pluto can mean regeneration, rebuilding, and transformation. Under unfavorable influence, Pluto can mean destruction and chaos.

In addition to being ruled by the planets, each zodiac sign is classified by its nature or essence. There are 4 Cardinal signs, 4 Fixed signs, and 4 Mutable signs in the zodiac:

Cardinal: As with the Cardinal directions, North, South, East, and West, Cardinal signs in astrology are oriented to the seasons - Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn) tend to be the people who take action. They take initiative and jump right in They are motivated and enterprising. However, though they always get a running start, they may fail to complete projects and leave unfinished work in their wakes.

Fixed: People who fall into the fixed category (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) are people who crave stability. They want to own things and be the boss. They want other people to do the activity while they remain still, but they will stubbornly see to it that a project is completed, no matter how long it takes or who they have to push. They can be inflexible, but will hold their stance even under pressure.

Mutable: Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces) are communicators and mediators. They will usually compromise and will listen to both sides of an issue. When they are interested, they will remain with a job or in a relationship indefinitely, but if they become bored, they will be gone. They are adaptable, but can be changeable and inconsistent.

Lastly, each zodiac sign is ruled by Elements, which can be described as the basic character of the sign. There are four elements - Earth, Air, Fire, and Water:

Earth - (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn). Those with earth sign influence are well-grounded and down-to-earth types. They are hard workers who will get the job done. They are not risk takers and prefer a steady, stable path. They are reliable, dutiful, conservative, logical, and responsible. They appreciate all that can be seen and touched, and like to accumulate worldly possessions. The love the finer things in life and will strive to situate themselves accordingly. Under unfavorable aspects, they may become greedy and too materialistic, stepping upon others to gratify themselves.

Air - (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius). Those with air sign influence are smart and enterprising. They love a puzzle or dilemma and will find unique solutions. They are inventive and think out of the box. They are generally optimistic and tend to think of the glass as half full. They thrive on processing information and are curious and alert. On the down side, they can be cold and calculating, not fully understanding the emotional needs of others.

Fire - (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius). Those with fire sign influence are self-sufficient, courageous risk takers. They go at life with gusto, including in their relationships, and they are by far the sexiest of the elemental signs. They are fun, engaging, and creative in all aspects of their lives. However, they can also be terribly selfish, demanding and bossy under unfavorable conditions, and they often refuse to see any side but their own when confronted with an issue. They can be very headstrong and will bully their way through life if life doesn't move over for them.

Water - (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces). Those with water sign influence are the feelers of the world. They are intuitive and "just know." They are compassionate and receptive, and feel everything quite deeply. They are artistic and love having beauty around them. They form strong emotional bonds with others and are always willing to help. They want to care for others and be cared for. They are the psychics of the world. On the down side, they can be moody and may tend to dwell on the bad things.

In addition to the 12 zodiac signs, there are also 12 cusps - generally 5 days before and after the beginning or end of a sign. If you were born within this category, then you probably have traits from both signs, such as Libra/Scorpio. This will be covered in these pages too, as these are sometimes vastly different personalities than the core sign they fall in. If you have researched zodiac signs at all, you have also undoubtedly noticed that there is disagreement as to the start and end dates of some signs. This is complicated and will be explained further later on, but for your purposes if you just adhere to the 5 days before and 5 days after cusp rules, then a day or two makes little difference.

So that's it for the preliminary stuff - stay tuned as we post each individual sign's personal characteristics using the links at top left in the very near future.

What Does My Name Say About My Personality

What Does My Name Say About My Personality? 3 Fascinating Ways To Find Out

Have you ever asked yourself, “What does my name say about my personality?” If you’re interested to find out, read on…

Names are very sacred. A lot of people take them for granted, but names actually have a say on your personality. After all, it is what you have to live with for the rest of your life.

While some have the opportunity to change their name when they grow up, the weight is not as significant as the name you were given on the day of your birth. Needless to say, your name can certainly have an influence on how you see yourself and how other people see you.

Once, I asked myself, “What does my name say about my personality?” I had my own opinions and so I asked other experts and friends what they thought about it. If you want to try to analyze your own name, here are some tips for you to consider:

1) Review different personalities.

An interesting way to figure out what your name says about your personality is by reviewing people with the same name as you. A lot of people unconsciously take on the same personality as a person with the same name as them.

For example, girls who are named Princess often grow up to be graceful ladies. In other cultures, people believe that a baby named after a thief will one day grow up to be one.

2) Consult the baby book.

One of the easiest ways to find out what your name says about your personality is to consult the baby names book.

These books already have fixed meanings for common and unusual baby names. Your parents most likely looked up the meaning of your name before they actually made the decision to give you that name. I know, cause that’s how most of my friends got their names.

3) Try the power of astrology.

Or rather, the Internet. If you’re curious to find out what your name says about your personality, you might be inclined to check out what your name means online.

Some websites often only ask you to type your given name, and all you have to do is click the button. Most of these descriptions are actually quite accurate, so there might be some truth to them.

So what does your name say about your personality? Names have the power to shape how your life is going to turn out. If your parents gave you a hideous name, you might have a not-so-pleasant time growing up. However, in the end, it’s all up to you. You alone have the power to control how your life is going to turn out.

Complete Personality Test

It has been rightly stated that personality is to perceive your on self or perceiving other’s self to know others personality traits. However, as human minds are complex they have a mind sets which makes every individual different from each other in terms of personality. Your personality reflects how you think, what you like, why you say so etc etc. Every small detail that you display about your inner self become part of your personality.

Have you ever noticed that how you admire the personality of another colleague and how a team works with its members having all different personalities? Well, its now where you can put a little ponder not on others but your personality and its development. A good personality will always vibrate positivism where ever he/she goes, revealing freshness or a pleasant feeling altogether. But a man with a poor personality represents just the vice versa. It has been pointed out by psychologists that a poor personality is formed out of a fear syndrome. This syndrome prevents him from opening up freely and righteously which further prevents his promotion up the ladder of success.

Let us make this discussion specific by focusing on personality development which should be the area of concern for all men. Let us examine step-by-step how to remake your personality:-

Lack of confidence is one of the major problems that put hindrance to a positive growth of personality. You feel confident only when you have a good track record or some achievements in your past. If you don’t, try taking easier and simpler tasks initially than jumping into bigger and difficult task that would weary you out with a sure failure. Always remember your experience will help you to move up which can slow but that’s steady.

At times, when you are extremely stressed out you tend to lose patience, get irritated or have low confidence over your abilities. At this point of time, it’s most important to de-stress yourself before you take up any further task. Taking a short trip, relaxing a day out with your family/friends or simply with yourself can be refreshing, or you can spend some time at your gym or perform some de-stressing yoga.

One of the major factors that play a role in having low confidence is that we don’t acknowledge our success or achievements in a right way. Or we take our goal too large as an entity that a failure falls too hard on us. We fail to accept the lessons learnt out of that failure or our smaller achievements we had as an experience. If you try to view things objectively and acknowledge your smaller skills gained, then life becomes an exciting text book! However, even if you can’t get over it, try out these few simple tips:

1.Break your task into smaller bits and gradually look into the next step once the step previous step is achieved.

2.Congratulate yourself when you won one step and feel good about it! If you fail in any, look out for the errors and correct them before going to the next. Keep every step under your strict vigilance.

3.Re-enforce your overall confidence by continuous practice. Do a lot of self-talk. This releases the built up tension and gives the courage to carry on.

You should feel like a champion always, even in your good and bad days! That the right development of personality. A man who can’t think positively withers away with time and life itself!

Take a test Complete Personality Test at, http://3smartcubes.com/pages/tests/persdisc/persdisc_instructions.asp to know how you fare in your personality and also know the areas where you need work upon.

Personality Development

Real Meaning Of Personality Development And Tips For Its Development

Well every human being might have different perception, attitude and meaning for this broad terminology “PERSONALITY”, as we, human beings, are said to be social animal and the only animal having something powerful tool called MIND which other animals do not possess in this entire planet. Other animals also got BRAIN but its potential is limited. But our brain and its capacity are simply unlimited. Because of this tool, we are ruling the entire universe. I have mentioned all of this because, with external and internal beauties, this organ of human also plays significant role in developing, enriching and boosting our personality as a whole.

Now, what actually Personality means?

According to ENCARTA DICTIONARY ,Personality means

1.
somebody's set of characteristics: the totality of somebody's attitudes, interests, behavioral patterns, emotional responses, social roles, and other individual traits that endure over long periods of time

2.
characteristics making somebody appealing: the distinctive or very noticeable characteristics that make somebody socially appealing

· a partner with real personality

3.
somebody regarded as epitomizing traits: somebody regarded as epitomizing particular character traits

4.
famous person: a famous person, especially an entertainer or athlete

5.
unusual person: a distinctive and unusual person

6.
quality of being person: the quality of existing as a person

· Do you think that computers will ever achieve personality?

7.
distinguishing characteristics: the distinguishing characteristics of a place or situation Microsoft® Encarta® 2007. © 1993-2006 Microsoft Corporation. We can say ‘Yes’ to some extend because whenever we talk about personality most of us go for “LOOKS”. But here comes the diversion of definition. Is personality at a glance means to say “LOOKS”? For me, its partial. The foremost thing or the main thing for which we can determine or perceive another stranger is via his external or physical outfit, as no one can know how he is? His behavior, character at a glance so personality at a glance goes for “LOOKS”. But, most of the people only think that if a person has good looks, then he/she has got personality and I totally disagree this statement. He/she only possess looks, external personality but not personality as a whole. So to analyze or determine somebody’s total personality we have to understand him/her which needs time. Someone might not be good looking but he/she can have his/her behavior, character outstanding and vice-versa.

Personality traits are not inborn or genetically inherent. We have to develop or enhance these traits after landing on earth. We are the only one who can develop our whole personality. There are others like our parents who are always there to help us but the actual hero is with us. If we are interested to develop our personality we need to learn many things and might be more and more and more things. Apart from academic education we must have to learn many extra curricular things like:

1) Public Speaking Skills.

2) Body language Skills.

3) Handwriting analysis Skills.

4) Behavioral Skills.

5) Anger Management Skills.

6) Fitness Skills.

7) Yoga and Exercise.

8) Food habit.

9) Communication Skills.

10) Friends making Skills.

11) Relationship Skills.

12) Super learning Skills.

13) Dealing with problems.

14) Self or Auto-Suggestions skills and much more which can’t be listed here.

A person can only be real person when he/she can be cent percent successful in fulfilling his/her whole responsibility and the above mentioned point are the key points and landmarks to make one RESPONSIBLE, RATIONAL, BOLD, BRAVE and SMART

The Measurement of Personality

One would come across many treatises on personality. ‘What is Personality’, ‘Personality Building’, ‘Magnetic Personality’, ‘Personality Cult’, ‘Personality Disorder’, are some of the well known captions. They prescribe and recommend many personality aids, improvement recipes and cures and correctives as if personality is a simple and common trait which can be acquired easily; or it is some thing objective which can be everybody’s property.

Personality is not such a common and cheap human property. In philosophic sense personality is systematized, integrated and disciplined self. There are three important aspects of human personality namely physical, mental and moral or ethical. A harmonious and conscious development of all the three, is the test of good or balanced personality.

Development, dedication and discipline are the three mansions of personal ethics. Development is growth, enfoldment of body, mind and expansion and enrichment of personality to utmost extent. It is positive as the gardener gives manure, sunshine and air to the plants. Dedication consists in the consecration of the disciplined and developed personality to some noble cause. Discipline is a negative quality; and it aims at the control of passions, impulses and appetites as a gardener prunes the plants.

We often hear the phrases, beautiful personality, attractive personality, impressive personality and imposing personality. These epithets refer to the physical aspect of the outward traits of personality. Actually personality is sum-total of various objective and subjective qualities displayed by a person. When all these qualities are assembled in one place, or one is blessed by the virtues like self-confidence, will power, power of concentration, power of discrimination, earnestness, integrity of character, pleasing manners and simple life habits, he has a great personality. No doubt attractive appearance and pleasing out-looks do have external beauty.

As we should not judge a book from its cover, so we must not judge a person from appearances which are often deceptive. It is said that each of us has a personality. A person is handsome if he is a male, beautiful if she is a female. According to dictionary meaning, personality is the integrated organization of all the psychological, intellectual, emotional and physical characteristics of an individual as they are presented to the other people. Ordinarily it stands for individuality, a distinctive or well-marked character. It is man’s most precious possession.

A person may be well built, muscular, tall, fair, deep- voiced, short, slim, a talker, or a light upper, a leader, a musician, a painter, an architect, a man of letters and so forth. There is no limit to various divisions, various dissections that a man as a subject of inquiry, can be classified. All these qualities and traits - external, inherent or acquired go to build up his personality or impart individuality.

Frank Desantis is a philanthropist from the U.S.A. He is a writer by hobby and writes on various topics, especially Literature and Life in general.

Psychological ("personality") Types

According to Jung's theory of Psychological Types we are all different in fundamental ways. One's ability to process different information is limited by their particular type. These types are sixteen.

People can be either Extroverts or Introverts, depending on the direction of their activity; Thinking, Feeling, Sensing, Intuitive, according to their own information pathways; Judging or Perceiving, depending on the method in which they process received information.

Extroverts vs. Introverts

Extroverts are directed towards the objective world whereas Introverts are directed towards the subjective world. The most common differences between Extroverts and Introverts are shown below:

  Extroverts

are interested in what is happening around them

are open and often talkative

compare their own opinions with the opinions of others

like action and initiative

easily make new friends or adapt to a new group

say what they think

are interested in new people

easily break unwanted relations

  Introverts

are interested in their own thoughts and feelings

need to have own territory

often appear reserved, quiet and thoughtful

usually do not have many friends

have difficulties in making new contacts

like concentration and quiet

do not like unexpected visits and therefore do not make them

work well alone

Sensing vs. Intuition

Sensing is an ability to deal with information on the basis of its physical qualities and its affection by other information. Intuition is an ability to deal with the information on the basis of its hidden potential and its possible existence. The most common differences between Sensing and Intuitive types are shown below:

  Sensing types

see everyone and sense everything

live in the here and now

quickly adapt to any situation

like pleasures based on physical sensation

are practical and active

are realistic and self-confident

  Intuitive types

are mostly in the past or in the future

worry about the future more than the present

are interested in everything new and unusual

do not like routine

are attracted more to the theory than the practice

often have doubts

Thinking vs. Feeling

Thinking is an ability to deal with information on the basis of its structure and its function. Feeling is an ability to deal with information on the basis of its initial energetic condition and its interactions. The most common differences between Thinking and Feeling type are shown below:

  Thinking types

are interested in systems, structures, patterns

expose everything to logical analysis

are relatively cold and unemotional

evaluate things by intellect and right or wrong

have difficulties talking about feelings

do not like to clear up arguments or quarrels

  Feeling types

are interested in people and their feelings

easily pass their own moods to others

pay great attention to love and passion

evaluate things by ethics and good or bad

can be touchy or use emotional manipulation

often give compliments to please people

Perceiving vs. Judging

Perceiving types are motivated into activity by the changes in a situation. Judging types are motivated into activity by their decisions resulting from the changes in a situation. The most common differences between Perceiving and Judging types are shown below:

  Perceiving types

act impulsively following the situation

can start many things at once without finishing them properly

prefer to have freedom from obligations

are curious and like a fresh look at things

work productivity depends on their mood

often act without any preparation

  Judging types

do not like to leave unanswered questions

plan work ahead and tend to finish it

do not like to change their decisions

have relatively stable workability

easily follow rules and discipline

Different Personalities = Different Jobs

SYDNEY (Reuters Life!) - Boss too mean? Staff fond of slacking? It comes with the territory, says a new study that found personality traits have a big influence on your job.
The study, by researchers at the University of Western Sydney, Australia, showed that in many cases, personality, rather than education or the occupation of a person's parents, played a bigger role in determining what job people ended up with.

People in managerial roles tended to be more open to experience, more conscientious but less agreeable than others in different job roles.

Clerical workers were the most conscientious, but least open to change, while salespeople were the most extroverted and agreeable.

Office workers were among the least conscientious, but they had high levels of emotional stability.

"Personality traits are a combination of genes and upbringing, and they're relatively formed by the age of 12," said Robert Wells, one of the researchers who conducted the study as part of his PhD thesis.

"By the age of 30, the broad characteristics are stable. And the study indicates that personality traits generally seem to have some influence on occupational outcomes," he told Reuters.

"Also, with regard to occupations, management tends to be more influenced by personality traits."

The study was based on data from a wide ranging national survey, the Household Income and Labor Dynamics in Australia, which involves almost 20,000 individuals.

The survey looked at the prevalence of five characteristics - openness to experience, conscientiousness, extroversion, agreeableness and emotional stability - in different occupations.

"This study can help policymakers, employees and employers alike," said Wells. But many of them also feel that wearing it will spoil their appearance and they will not look good or stylish. But they do not know how wrong they are. Eyeglasses will not spoil your outward appearance in any manner. You can in fact start sporting a whole new look by wearing some nice and stylish ones. Selecting the right kind, which will suit your face, looks and personality will also make you look more attractive. Your glasses will create the first impression about you when people see you. So make sure that you select the right pair for yourself since this will make a real positive difference in your life

You have to find a pair of glasses, which will complement your particular style. It may be possible that the product which is right for one person will not be right for another. Make sure that you try every pair before you find a set that suits you. The eyewear should be selected according to the face of the person. The shape of the face will be the deciding factor, which determines what kind of frame should be selected. The eyes will help in deciding the angle of the glasses. The size will be dependent on the personality of the individual. People who are very outgoing should select the one, which will make a bold statement. A shy and timid person should select small and thin glasses.

People should remember that branded eyewear is not the best option for every person. This kind of eyewear is not suitable for every person. You should be equally careful while choosing branded as well as unbranded eyewear. You should make sure that the eyewear, which you select, would compliment your looks in a perfect manner. If you are not able to find the right kind of frames in a particular brand that you should select your glasses from a brand, which will suit your face. You should make sure that you obtain the right look while wearing your new eyewear.

The kind of glasses, which you choose, should also match your personality. You should make sure that you select the one, which will complement your personality. The purpose and the venue of wearing them should also be taken into consideration. You should decide whether you want to wear those when you are going to work in an office. Then make sure that you do not wear eyeglasses , which are too loud and bold since this might create a negative impression about you

You should also make sure that you are comfortable in your new look. Intuitively, it seems as if the way our parents raise us exerts an enduring influence on the nature of our personality. By teaching certain types of behavior and by punishing actions of which they disapprove, parents may significantly influence the behavioral and emotional styles of their children.
This intuition, however, contrasts with a second one. Common knowledge tells us that siblings often differ greatly from one another. One brother may be outgoing, the other shy. One sister may be conservative, the other liberal. Since siblings have the same parents, and parents tend to treat their children similarly, such examples seem to suggest that parents’ style of child rearing might make little difference to the personality of their children. The question of parental influences on personality, then, is an interesting puzzle for scientific theory and research in personality psychology.

Theories of personality have taken different viewpoints on the question of parental influences on personality. This paper addresses two theories that present contrasting views. These are the trait and phenomenological theories of personality.

In the trait theories, the basic variables of the theory are people’s traits, that is, their “broad predispositions . . . to respond in particular ways” (Pervin & John, 2001, p. 226). Most trait theories try to identify a common set of traits that can be used to describe the personality of any individual. These “nomothetic” trait theories rely on the statistical procedure of factor analysis to identify dimensions that can be used summarize individual differences in personality traits. Researchers using this technique commonly identify a set of five trait dimensions. These Big Five personality traits include extroversion, neuroticism, conscientiousness, agreeableness, and openness to experience (Pervin & John, 2001).

Once one identifies a set of basic traits in this manner, a primary question is to identify where the traits come from. Why do some people have more or less of a given trait than others? Almost all trait theorists have sought biological explanations for variations in traits. People are seen to inherit a given level of a trait in the same way that they might inherit hair color or height. This viewpoint is consistent with findings on genetics and personality, which indicate that identical twins’ personalities are far more similar than would be expected by chance (Pervin & John, 2001).

The trait theories, then, have an interesting implication for the question of parental influences on personality. If personality is defined in terms of personality traits, and if traits are thought to be inherited, then parental styles of child rearing would appear to have little influence on children’s personality.

The only influence parents would have on their children’s personality is a biological one.

They pass their genes on to their children. According to the trait theories, parents interpersonal interactions with their children would exert little effect on the child’s personality development.

A very different view is put forth by proponents of phenomenological theories of personality. The primary focus of the phenomenological theories is the individual’s subjective experience of their world, that is, their phenomenological experience (Pervin & John, 2001). In particular, people’s subjective experience of themselves, or their self-concept, is seen as the core of individuals’ personalities.

Among the most prominent of the phenomenological theories of personality is the self theory of Carl Rogers (Pervin & John, 2001). Rogers contended that people’s psychological experiences are not determined by objective events in the world, but by their subjective interpretations of these events.

These interpretations, in turn, are heavily influenced by a person’s self concept. Specifically, people may experience psychological distress when they cannot integrate their daily experiences with their sense of who they really are, as might be manifested by a person’s saying that “I just haven’t been acting like myself lately.” Alternatively, a person might feel guilty or depressed if their actions do not meet their “ideal self,” that is, the person’s subjective sense of what they ideally should be like; in such circumstances, a person might report that “I’m disappointed with myself.” People’s self-views, then, are a primary determinant of their overall experiences.

With regard to the question of parental influences, Rogers’ phenomenological theory has a very different implication than that deriving from trait theory. According to Rogers, self concept, like other aspects of phenomenological experience, is not inherited but instead develops gradually as people interact with the world and the other people around them. Rogers suggests that people develop a positive self-concept if they experience “unconditional positive regard,” that is, if people consistently respect and accept them for who they really are. People who experience unconditional positive regard, then, should have a positive view of self that enables them to approach daily activities in an open-minded, psychologically flexible and creative manner. In contrast, less positive personality development occurs if people experience “conditions of worth,” that is, if other people establish criteria, or conditions, for what is valued behavior. Such individuals may experience a more negative view of self that leads them to approach life activities in a more cautious, tentative, self-critical, and unconfident style. Since parents are generally the major source of influence in the early years of child development, the extent to which parents display unconditional positive regard to their children, as opposed to imposing conditions of worth, should influence long-term personality development.

A primary question, then, is how one might be able to test these theories one against the other. Since personality theorists are attempting to development conceptions of human nature that can be evaluated by objective empirical evidence, it should be possible to marshal scientific evidence that bears on the relative merits of the two theories. For the question of parental influences on personality, one key source of evidence would be longitudinal studies, that is, studies that examine the same individuals across a long period of time. Ideally, such work would measure aspects of child rearing early in life and determine whether they predict personality characteristics as measured later in life.

Such a study has been conducted by Harrington, Block, & Block (1987). They studied a large group of people at two points in time: early childhood and adolescence. During early childhood, the researchers obtained measures of the degree to which each child’s parents exhibited a “Rogerian” style of child rearing, that is, a style in which few conditions of worth were imposed on children and, instead, children were accepted for who they are and were allowed to explore the world freely. There were two such measures. One was a self-report of parents’ child-rearing styles, and the other was an observational measure in which researchers observed parents interacting with their children and coded whether the parents acted in a prototypic Rogerian manner. They two measures were combined into an overall index of Rogerian child rearing.

In adolescence, the researchers obtained a measure of creativity. Teachers were asked to rate the degree to which the research participants, who were their students, approached tasks in an open-minded, creative manner. Since the researchers had measures on the same individuals at two points in time, they were able to determine the degree to which the childhood measure of parenting style predicted the adolescent measure of creativity.

The finding strongly supported Rogers’ theory of personality development (Harrington et al., 1987). Just as Rogers would have predicted, children whose parents treated them in a Rogerian style turned out to be adolescents who were judged as being more creative. Child rearing style was a statistically significant predictor of creativity. Importantly, this was true even when the researchers controlled for a measure of intelligence that also was obtained during childhood. It is not merely the case that intelligent children were treated in a Rogerian style and also were creative. Instead, even controlling for intelligence, parental child rearing predicted creativity.
In evaluating the two theories, the results clearly support Rogers’ phenomenological perspective, as noted above. Children’s experiences of alternative parenting styles seem to have influenced a significant aspect of their personality and to have done to in exactly the manner Rogers would have anticipated. In contrast, the results conflict with the trait theory position that personality characteristics are largely inherited and that aspects of the environment that are shared by multiple siblings, such as parental child rearing style, exert little influence on personality characteristics later in life.

Since the work of Harrington et al. (1987) was conducted a number of years ago, one might ask how trait theorists, in light of these results, could maintain their view that parental styles of child rearing exert little influence on personality. The results would seem to provide objective evidence against their theories. One possibility is that trait theories are focusing only on specific, narrow aspects of human personality, and that parental child rearing styles exert an influence on other aspects of personality that trait theorists have overlooked. Recall that, as described above, the core variables of trait theory are people’s average tendencies to exhibit general styles of emotion or behavior. It is noteworthy that none of these personality trait variables addresses people’s self-concept. Although trait theorists surely do recognize that people have self-concepts, they seem to have eliminated the notion of self-concept from the core of personality. Self-concept is not a “personality structure” in their view. This seems hard to defend, since people’s views of themselves are such a central feature of psychological experience. By focusing on overt styles of behavior, rather than the inner psychological life of the individual, including his or her views of self, trait theories may be missing an important aspect of human nature. The development of a stable conception of oneself and one’s personal qualities is a critical feature of personality, and it may be one that is shaped to a large degree by interactions between children and their parents.

References
Harrington, D., Block, J. New York: John Wiley & Sons.

Notes (Your paper would not have these notes; these notes merely are intended for members of the class. They correspond to the circled numbers in the margins of the text.)

1. This was a rare instance in which I wanted to quote directly from another source, in order to get the precisely correct definition on the term. To indicate that the material is taken directly from the textbook, I put the passage in quotation marks and included the page number in the book that contains the original material (p. 226). Note that you have to take these two steps even if you take only a few words from the other source. Even though it was only 7 words, Pervin and John wrote those words, not me, so they have to be in quotes. Otherwise, the material would be plagiarized. Any material that comes from another source and that appears in your paper has to be in quotation marks, and you must include the page number on the book or journal that contains the original material. In general, you should have very few passages of directly quoted material. The words in your paper should be yours, not somebody else’s.

2. This paragraph is a useful one for this paper assignment. Perhaps the most difficult part of the assignment is to figure out how specific, concrete research findings relate to the general, abstract ideas of the personality theories. You should make clear to the reader how the study that you review relates to the two theories.

3. When writing the paper, you should provide some information about the type of study your are reviewing, as in this paragraph, and then should review the results.

<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px;
