“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” follows title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Sorcerers.
Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain, first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.
Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of ingenuity and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities… A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

he EOS C500 4K digital cinema camera and EOS C100 digital video camera join Canon’s Cinema EOS System which includes two other camera models, the EOS C300 digital cinema camera for mainstream HD production and the EOS-1D C 4K Digital SLR cinema camera for 4K and HD filmmakers favoring the SLR form factor. The Cinema EOS System also offers filmmakers optical diversity with seven EF Cinema lens models: the compact and lightweight CN-E15.5-47mm T2.8 L wide-angle cinema zoom and the CN-E30-105mm T2.8 L telephoto cinema zoom (available in EF and PL versions); the CN-E14.5-60mm T2.6 L wide-angle zoom and CN-E30-300mm T2.95-3.7 L telephoto zoom (also available in EF and PL versions); and the CN-E24mm T1.5 L, CN-E50mm T1.3 L, and CN-E85mm T1.3 L prime lenses for EF-mount cameras, in addition to the more than 60 lenses in Canon’s EF and EF-S lens lines (which include macro, fisheye, telephoto, and tilt-shift models).

4K, 2K, and Full HD Image Quality

The Canon EOS C500 and C500 PL digital cinema cameras are designed to provide a versatile high-quality 4K imaging solution to high-end productions. High-quality 4K resolution imaging has become the new standard for advanced effects and is particularly important for big-budget motion pictures that include scenes compositing live-action cinematography with high-resolution computer-generated imagery. The C500 and C500 PL cameras output 4K resolution to external recorders as a 10-bit uncompressed RAW data stream, as well as offering the additional versatility of being able to output quad full-HD (3840 x 2160), 2K (2048 x 1080), full HD (1920 x 1080), and other imaging options. All of these digital image source formats fully conform to established SMPTE production standards. All 4K formats can be selected to operate from one to 60 frames per second. When shooting in 2K, the C500 and C500 PL cameras employ a 12-bit RGB 4:4:4 signal format from one to 60 frames-per-second (fps) as well. For high-speed shooting and slow motion capture the cameras can be set to a 10-bit YCrCb 4:2:2 mode, and can output 4K or 2K video up to 120 fps.

While outputting 4K or 2K video to an external recorder, the Canon EOS C500 and C500 PL digital cinema cameras simultaneously record a 50 Mbps Full HD video file in-camera to the user’s choice of one or two CF cards. The 8-bit 4:2:2 in-camera recordings can be used as a proxy for offline editing of 4K projects, and they are also suitable for various projects that do not require 4K resolution. Equipped with Canon’s exceptional Super 35mm 8.85-megapixel CMOS sensor, both C500 camera models are compatible with a wide range of interchangeable Canon lenses – the C500 is compatible with EF, EF-S and EF Cinema lenses for Canon SLR cameras, while the C500 PL is compatible with PL-mount EF Cinema lenses and other PL-mount lenses. Highly mobile and compact, the C500 digital cinema camera provides the same ergonomic features as the C300 model, with the exception of a fixed hand grip that incorporates a pair of 3G-SDI ports for 4K video output and another pair of video ports for monitoring purposes. Canon is working with several independent manufacturers of external video recorders to support smooth workflow options, and these recorders are expected to be available by the time the EOS C500 and C500 PL 4K digital cinema cameras ship to authorized dealers later this year.

One-Person Full HD With Automatic Functions

A cost-effective camera solution for a wide range of everyday users, the EOS C100 digital video camera is ideal for many full HD applications such as:

Low-budget television production and independent moviemaking

Museums, galleries, and film schools that utilize Full HD video

Wedding, corporate and event videography

The EOS C100 digital video camera is approximately 85% of the size of the EOS C300 model, for maximum mobility. Designed for professional operability, the C100 includes a push auto iris function, one-shot auto focus (or full manual focus and exposure control), a multi-angle 3.5-inch LCD control panel, a high-resolution electronic viewfinder (EVF), built-in ND filters, dual XLR inputs, and a locking HDMI output. These features combine with such advanced technologies as reduced rolling shutter artifacts in 60i mode, enhanced gamma modes (including Wide Dynamic Range (DR) Gamma and Canon Log Gamma), cinematic depth of field characteristics, and excellent low-light performance. The C100 records to dual SD cards contributing to the camera’s reduced size and convenience.

Like its C300 sibling, the EOS C100 employs Canon’s uniquely designed Super 35mm 16:9 CMOS sensor that captures individual R, G, and B channels for each full HD 1920 x 1080 frame. This high-sensitivity CMOS sensor provides creative depth of field capabilities for an excellent “bokeh” effect, and provides an ISO range of from 320 to 20,000, enabling the capture of images in low light with minimal picture noise. The Canon DIGIC DV III image processor in the C100 helps ensure high color fidelity and smooth color gradations. The camera’s AVCHD codec utilizes MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 compression similar to the codec used in Canon’s XA10 professional HD camcorder. AVCHD features a maximum recording bit rate of 24Mbps in full HD 1920 x 1080 and 4:2:0 color space for sharp, vivid images. Multiple recording modes, resolutions, and frame rates (including 24p) make the C100 creatively flexible for many production environments. The C100 also offers enhanced gamma modes (including Wide DR Gamma and Canon Log Gamma) for a peak dynamic range of 800% and the wide exposure latitude needed for creative post-production image processing, color correction, and contrast manipulation.

Designed for extensive operational versatility, the Canon EOS C100 digital video camera features a mobile core configuration that allows users to flexibly add accessory parts to the main camera body according to their production needs. A removable side-mounted rotating grip with start/stop button and miniature “joystick” menu control provides traditional SLR camera-style operation. A detachable handle unit connects to the top of the C100 and includes dual XLR connectors, a built-in stereo microphone, a bracket for an external microphone, audio-input level adjustments, and a tally light. The C100 records linear PCM two-channel audio or Dolby digital two-channel audio.

In addition to its ability to record to both SD cards simultaneously, or relay-record from one card to the other, the Canon C100 Cinema EOS camera can also output uncompressed digital HD to an external recording device via its locking HDMI connector. This HDMI output includes superimposed time code and 2:3 pull-down marker information. Additional outputs include a USB connector and stereo headphone jack.

MAXON unveiled CINEMA 4D Release 14, R14 delivers breakthrough performance offerings including a new, fully integrated sculpting system, new camera matching functionality, the debut of exchange plugins to two key applications — The Foundry NUKE and Adobe Photoshop Extended — and improved integration with Adobe After Effects. Packed with a number of other powerful workflow feature enhancements, creative professionals – motion graphics and visual effects artists, as well as visualization designers – will benefit from features that accelerate productivity to produce spectacular 3D content more fluidly, and the ability to collaborate with increased efficiency.

“CINEMA 4D R14 is a milestone release that harnesses MAXON’s decades of leadership and programming experience to deliver the absolute best-in-breed 3D technology with the unified workflow capabilities our customers need to realize their creative visions, quickly and efficiently,” says Harald Egel, co-founder and CEO of MAXON Computer. “With improved and added tools such as digital sculpting, camera matching and tighter integration with leading third-party applications, R14 offers the innovation on which individual artists and design teams have come to rely to create compelling 3D content for any medium – from film and broadcast to architectural visualization and mobile games.”

CINEMA 4D Release 14 Highlights
MAXON offers four versions of CINEMA 4D, each catering to the needs of 3D artists in different industries. Note: The features listed below may not be included in every configuration. Click here for further information. Key features and benefits include:

Digital Sculpting
Dynamic new sculpting tools give artists complete control to create finely detailed models with tools like Pull, Wax, Smooth, Flatten, Inflate, Knife and Pinch. There are powerful preset options for brushes, stamps, stencils, and attributes for size, pressure, symmetry options and more. A powerful layer system allows for maximum flexibility in the creation process while the Bake option recalculates the millions of sculpted polygons into displacement and normal maps that can be applied to low-poly count base meshes for further use in renderings and animations.

Improved Modeling Toolset
New interactive work plane modes, dynamic guides and a completely redesigned snapping system offer a powerful, unified 3D workflow to model dramatically faster and accurately align elements. Controls to interactively position the world grid to move, scale and rotate objects, as well as the ability to intuitively snap objects and components to the grid plane, grid lines or grid points are provided along with other key parameters.

Camera Enhancements
The new Camera Calibrator in R14 offers an integrated solution to match a 3D camera image to a 3D environment – a perfect solution for architects and designers to present their creations. Users can integrate 3D objects into the photographed environment for visualizations or use CINEMA 4D’s camera mapping workflow to create digital matte paintings and set extensions.

The new Motion Camera, Morph Camera and Camera Composition Helper tools in R14 help to quickly frame a 3D scene following artistic rules or easily create realistic and dynamic camera animations while the new Camera Focus Picker gives users control to interactively set focus distances.

Better and Faster Rendering
Multiple enhancements in R14 bring digital artists a more flexible toolset to achieve greater rendering realism and compositing control that result in outstanding image quality. New and improved shaders and materials are now available for simulating wood grain, weathering effects and normal mapping. Global Illumination has been enhanced with new technologies such as Radiosity Maps and the unified sampler from the Physical Renderer, to let users achieve higher-quality renders in less time and with greater accuracy. New render effects also power up the post-processing workflow. Relight scenes, pull position-based mattes and reconstruct objects with the new Position Pass or perform quick and easy color correction with new interactive grading curves. New algorithms in R14 provide up to twice the speed for caustics, while further enhancements to subsurface scattering render materials such as milk, wax and skin more efficiently.

Integration
Brand new to CINEMA 4D, the highly anticipated seamless integration with The Foundry’s award-winning NUKE compositing application allows R14 users to directly export a NUKE project file to reconstruct a multi-pass render and provides full support for OpenEXR and FBX files. The new Photoshop Extended exchange plug-in opens and manipulates CINEMA 4D scenes into a Photoshop 3D layer, offering new opportunities to illustrators, photographers, digital matte painters and motion graphics artists to share CINEMA 4D files with the broader Photoshop design community. Enhanced integration with After Effects brings new levels of performance to directly import and export native CINEMA 4D files.

Misc Productivity-Boosting Features
CINEMA 4D is renowned for outstanding ease of use. With numerous enhancements to the R14 interface, artists can perform common tasks faster and more efficiently.

R14 now offers greater levels of realism and control with increased versatility over dynamics with aerodynamic forces, plastic springs and breaking connectors. Users can now create much more believable animations of flying or breaking objects. The improved editor view now displays soft shadows and features new object highlighting options. Individuals and teams can manage tasks using the To Do list and the Commander, a filtered search box that appears directly under the cursor, which gives quick and easy access to all commands and tags. An improved XRef system offers options to offset the animation, scale or pivot of each referenced scene, which is especially useful for team collaboration. Finally, Arabic speakers can now use CINEMA 4D in their native language with new Arabic interface translation and a mirrored layout designed for right-to-left readers.

Pixologic, Inc. did unveile their latest version of ZBrush 4.

ZBrush 4R4 introduces many significant new features:

QRemesher Automatic quad-based retopology for full or partial models, including Curve Guide and density control features.

Topology Brush to create simple or complex base meshes on the fly. It may also be used for manual retopology.

Curve Snap Surface creates ruled surfaces for quick wall-type shapes. Thickness is based on your curve strokes.

Replace part of your mesh by inserting another object or surface. Among other things, this makes it possible to create more complex base meshes without the need for 3rd party software.

Enhancements to the existing Mesh Insert Brushes and introduction of: IMM Insert Multi Mesh brushes. The latter brush type makes building libraries of replacement parts within a single brush possible. These brushes may be selected as replacement parts or for insertion via Dynamesh.

New Curve engine with more control and features including curve extension, cutting and deformation. Curves may be used by the Mesh Insert features to replicate a shape. They are also used by Topology brushes, Tubes brushes or with any of your custom brushes.

New Tri IMM Tri Part Multi Mesh option for the Mesh Insert brushes. This is used to create chain-type objects that replicate a segment any number of times between separate start and end cap elements. Create zippers, bracelets, chains, straps and more.

DynaMesh can now be used to combine SubTools. A new PolyGroup option has been added to designate SubTools for subtraction based Boolean-type operations when merging via DynaMesh.

Transpose now shows world axis orientation switches, an easier way to align the Transpose line with your object’s surface normal, as well as new Shrink and Inflate operations.

An Undo History may now be saved with your Project. A maximum of 10,000 undo steps are now available.

The new Forward and Backward Movies options use the saved Undo History to replay your entire sculpting session. This may be recorded as a movie, and a number of settings are available to make the playback more watchable.

Floor Grid with Reference Images: Load images onto the working plane grids to help create a model based on blueprints or other references.

And many other new features which enhances the tool even further (Brushes, Tool And Geometry, FiberMesh, Render And Materials, Import/Export,…)

With the release of the EOS M Canon addresses the demand for premium image quality in a compact body that’s fun and easy to use.

The EOS M has been developed alongside the new EOS 650D digital SLR camera and shares many components, including the 18 megapixel APS-C sensor with on-chip phase detection AF and the DiG!C 5 image processor. The removal of the mirrorbox assembly and viewfinder allows the camera to be around 50% lighter and significantly smaller (Height, Width and Thickness are reduced by around 18%, 33% and 59%, respectively, compared with the EOS 650D) while enabling the same high level of image quality. Quality extends to renowned EOS performance features including outstanding low-light shooting with an ISO range of 100–12800 expandable to 25600 (H) and 4.3 frame-per-second high-speed burst shooting (One Shot AF).

The Canon EOS M comes with and Canon 18MP APS-C image sensor, DiG!C 5 image processor and Hybrid CMOS AF system and more:

DiG!C 5 Image Processor

18.0 mega pixel Canon-developed CMOS sensor

The EOS M places control at your fingertips with a capacitive Touch Screen 3.0-inch Clear View II LCD monitor (approximately 1.04 million dots) with smudge-resistant coating. Multi-touch operation enables Touch Focus and Touch Shutter operation as well as familiar reviewing gestures such as “pinch-to-zoom” and “swiping” to scroll between pictures. Moreover, the Feature Guide provides simple on-screen explanations of features as they are selected.

Canon’s new shooting modes (Handheld Night Scene, HDR Backlight Control and Multi-Shot Noise Reduction) take multiple pictures, and combine them – in camera – to help capture a wider dynamic range, minimise the image grain or noise, and produce more vivid colours so landscapes and city scenes are as breathtaking as when seen in person.

Canon’s Scene Intelligent Auto mode analyses the scene being shot, taking into account faces, colours, brightness, movement and contrast, to select appropriate camera settings for the best possible image.

The EOS M camera employs Canon’s Hybrid CMOS AF system to deliver fast autofocus speed for both photos and videos. The Hybrid CMOS AF system truly shines when shooting video with EOS Full HD Movie mode including Movie Servo AF for continuous autofocus and tracking of moving subjects. Thanks to Canon’s new Stepping Motor (STM) technology, when using either of the new M-series lenses the AF system remains silent, helping ensure users only capture the sound of the scene being recorded. The EOS M also features a built-in stereo microphone, which includes an attenuator function to reduce audio distortion in extra loud situations.

Along with the EOS M camera, Canon is also introducing a new series of lenses for the device that leverage Canon’s STM technology, allowing the lenses to smoothly and silently focus and, when used in combination with the Movie Servo AF feature, achieve continuous AF while recording video. The STM technology in both new lenses quietly achieves focus and allows the camera’s stereo microphone to only record the sounds of the scene being shot and not the whir of the AF typical in other interchangeable lens cameras.

With an Lens mount adapter you can use of more than 60 EF and EF-S lenses. Canon launches also two new dedicated EF-M lenses: 18-55mm standard zoom and ultra-compact 22mm pancake

The EF-M 22mm f/2 STM ultra compact pancake lens is ideal for shooting still scenes such as family portraits or travel locations. The fixed focal length lens boasts an incredible aperture of f/2.0 and, when combined with the camera’s APS-C image sensor, provides beautiful background blur for both stills and video. For a bit more focal range versatility, Canon is also introducing the new EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens, which provides a great zoom range for general use with photographing or video recording family and friends. Both lenses are designed specifically for use with the EOS M camera.

In addition to the two lenses, any of Canon’s EF and EF-S lenses can be used with the EOS M camera with the optional Mount Adapter EF-EOS M. Using the adapter allows the camera to be fully integrated into the EOS ecosystem of more than 60 Canon EF and EF-S lenses, adding creative options and versatility to this powerful camera. Also, when shooting EOS movies, the adapter allows key features such as Movie Servo AF for continuous focus tracking of moving subjects to be used.

The EOS M will be available through Canon retailers from early October 2012
