Creating rhythmic patterns can be approached in a very technical way. One of the best ways for starters is to create groups of Eight notes/Strums per chord in which you can assign the down stroke to the down beat & the Up stroke to the off or Up beat.

That way 1-3-5-7 will be down strokes and 2-4-6-8 will be Up strokes.

In effect 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 will mean Down-Up-Down-Up-Down-Up-Down-Up.

Basic Strumming Pattern - #1

Play: 1 3 4 5 6 7 8
Skip: 2

The word SKIP indicates that you need to keep making the hand movement (Up or Downstroke) while NOT striking the strings. This will let the chord ring for an additional beat or half a beat from the previous stroke.

Dynamic Strumming:

The most important aspect to strumming or guitar playing in general is the use of dynamics. By choosing to play certain notes/strums louder & certain softer than normal can create a very musical sounding rhythm. The use of dynamics & the ability to control the loudness & softness of your strum is what will make your guitar playing groove.

Play with the Open Chords

Lesson 1 - Open Chords

Open chords are the easiest for beginners to learn which makes it a good place to start. A chord is a combination of pitches sounded simultaneously. In our case it is 2 or more strings played at the same time.

An open chord is a chord that usually has at least one open string and is typically located around the 1st through 5th frets. These chords are the easiest and most common chords. Once you memorize these chords you will be able to play some basic songs.

How to read a chord chart

The vertical lines represents the strings
The area between the horizontal lines represent the frets
The dots tell you where to put your fingers
The numbers in the dots tell you which finger to use
The "O" at the top means to play that string open. An open string is where you don't touch the string with your left hand.
"X" means don't play, or to mute that string

Now that you have played an open note. You will now need to learn how to fret a note.

Start by placing your finger behind any fret.
Press down just to the side of the fret. If your finger is too far from the fret you will get fret noise. Fret noise is when the string isn't fully tight and is rattling against one of the frets.
Now try the up and down picking motion you learned from above while you fret this note.
Some key points to look out for are to keep your finger close to the side of the fret. Try not to have your finger too far away from the fret and not right on top of the fret.

Open Chords

Once you have learned how to read a chord chart begin learning and memorizing these open chords.

Tips:

Use tips of the finger to fret the notes and place the finger just behind the fret. Be careful not to place you finger on top of the fret because this will cause fret noise or can cause the note to not ring at all.
Your thumb should rest somewhere between the center and top of the back of the neck
Once you have fingers in the proper chord position try playing each string individually to see if all the strings are ringing.
If you find a string that isn't ringing check to make sure that finger is just behind the fret and not on top of the fret. Also check to see if another finger is touching that string causing it not to ring.

Let Start with the Basics

Picks, pick holding, and strumming

Guitar picks come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Picks are cheap so we suggest buying a handful and experiment to find the ones that you like best. Typically a medium gauge pick is a good place to start.

How a person holds a pick and strums will differ from person to person. Holding a pick will feel awkward at first but after a week or two of practicing it will feel more natural. Try this approach

Start with your picking hand which is the hand that you will be strumming with.
Face the palm of your picking hand towards you.
Make a loose fist by closing your hand. Keep the knuckle of your thumb facing you.
Place your pick in-between your index finger and thumb with the point of the pick facing away from your fist.
Leave around a half of an inch of the picks point out. This will give you the area you will be strumming the guitar with.
Place your picking hand over the body of your guitar. Your hand should now be hovering above the strings.
Try not to rest your hand on the body or stings of the guitar.
Now try strumming the guitar lightly with a downward motion using only your wrist and not your arm.
Make contact with each string as you pass through them. If the strings rattle against the frets that means that you are strumming to hard.
Repeat this now using an upward motion concentrating on locating a comfortable strumming position.
Once you have this motion down try to do a down up down up down up down up motion counting 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 for each motion.
Now try picking an individual string. Start with the top string using this same up and down exercise and continue with each individual string.
Some key points to look out for are to keep your picking and strumming in control and minimize the motion in your picking hand.

Fretting A Note

Now that you have played an open note. You will now need to learn how to fret a note.
